I think that leaving it to the player discretion is optimal -- they can name all their alts with the same naming pattern, and their friends can add all the alts to their friends list, or they can simply be in the same goddamn guild, etc.  Or if the player wants to hide an alt, or simply segregate that alt for another purpose (e.g. have an alt to play with the s/o, and they don't want to be bothered with guild stuff or w/e), they can do so.

Agreed. In early beta the GW2 team were told that people/anyone even remotely interested in RP would hate the account name idea. Instead of being immersed in a RPG experience I had to have my forum name? It was just one of the many ways GW2 tried to innovate/tell people what they want vs. deliver something people actually want.

Let me and my friends manage it. I do not want to see anyone's forum/account name in game. It is not that hard.

Those 2 plus the very bad Skill Animations and the lack of Group PvE content like Raids etc, keep me away from TESO.

Another thing i don't like is that almost everyone looks the same. Different classes, npc's etc they all look almost the same.

I found that a challenge as well. With everyone running around in starter armor, and no name plates is was hard to even make out NPC vs player. Then when you hit the player interaction wheel. It really put me off.

If I had never owned a gaming PC, and never played a MMO, this game would be amazing. But since I am not a consolebro, it seems dumbed down and less than I expected.

They say you should always try to say something nice, so I think the animation while crafting is cool. Cut to me stirring with a spoon while cooking. That is better than most status bar build times that you see in other games.

Is there any reason I should buy this game, or is it basically a 3D Fantasy-Inspired Microsoft Paint that I can never hope to be good at? Is there anything else to this game that I might enjoy? 

 

 I am so in the same boat with you. My stick figures of 4th grade are still all that I can manage. I have been playing at this for a month or so, and while it is pretty and fun it takes talent.

The guy a few claims over has a multi story tudor style home. Me, I have a dirt hut, and a forge. He sleeps in a bed, I poop in a hole.

Exploring is fun, and whacking rocks or trees is a good time, but my claim will be little more than a squatters box.

If you are a talented artist, you will be fine. If not, you will poop in a hole.

The question isn't IF people will play the game. The question is HOW LONG will they play it.

This is the big question. Everyone who loved EQ will play at launch. Everyone who was moderately disappointed with EQ 2 will still play at launch. Everyone who was totally let down by SWG may realize these are the same fools who screwed up the last two tries, and will still play at launch.

I am in all 3 categories, hate the idea of the GW2 combat style, but will still play at launch.

Everything I am seeing so far tells me it wont be long though. If as I suspect it all becomes a DPS wash, I wont waste my time like I did with GW2.

One of the main reasons I funded was no PVE. All the chatter in other games about smarter AI and dynamic mob spawning....If you only play against humans, poof, best AI in the known universe, problem solved.

I look forward to never getting a quest to go kill 25 orcs, wolves, pigs, giants, bunnies... etc. Go kill or be killed 25 times on the field of battle. I can get behind that.

It will be interesting to see if they make any changes. So far the class (or every class for everyone) system has been met with a healthy skepticism. Most think the current structure will result in a DPSFest, with little room for support class players. The dynamic world will be interesting to see, but if the game mechanics don't encourage groups, interaction and fun it will end up in the ditch.

Additionally, we had "difficult" AI back in 2004 during EQ2's closed beta. We started testing AI that would dynamically choose, on the fly, whom to attack based on class & actions they were taking. Mobs would randomly scream out "Kill the healer! It is keeping the weaklings alive!" (an undead skeleton within the instanced orc dungeon in Commonlands outside Freeport). I don't know what happened to it as mobs stopped doing that kind of stuff shortly before launch. Nothing was said about it, and launch went on without a further word on it.

 

The thing is, it made the game actually difficult and fun to play even with trinity. Tanks had to constantly watch their aggro or risk a healer or nuker being fried. It most certianly did NOT make Trinity obsolete.

 

ps: wtf with this whole "Trinity" name? CC (ie: control from enchanters, etc) has always been a critical role in Everquest. So why only pick Tank/Healer/DPS and call it Trinity???

 

Anyways, we've had basic-advanced AI since 2004, but no one has been using it. In the instances it was attempted it never made the game impossible, but from what I've been told by developers in the industry it made it that much harder to make new content for the game as they always had to consider how the AI would be used in that situation. This is the only reason I can guess as to why they stopped using it????

 

Either way, don't believe this nonsense about EQ:N. They're following the current "trend" of PR buzz phrases to catch people's eyes. They should just come out and say that they want to move away from selective roles like Tank/Healer/Dps/Control. After all, we all know dungeons in Everquest 1 cannot be done without that specific setup right guys? (In before I post about constantly doing DPS only dungeon runs etc in EQ1, or before someone else does)

 

 

Seriously, it really is getting frustrating reading about this "Advanced AI" when it doesn't exist. It's like the CEO of Spandex coming out to tell everyone we have conquered the effects of "Gravity" to a room that has at LEAST one Physicist/Engineer that knows for a fact we haven't yet.

I think you are right, but lets assume they have the best and brightest in AI right now. Say everyone quit what they were working on at (ai)2 and build EQNext.... for shits and giggles.

 

What would that AI do?

If possible, it would overwhelm the players with strength of numbers..

If possible, it would set a trap, sneak up with greater numbers and slaughter the players...

If caught in evenish combat, it would assess the biggest threat to its life first, incapacitate it, and then slaughter the players...

etc...

If they make it that smart, we all might have some fun.

But...like I said, I think you are right... It's all just BS.

Quit fearing change.  Change is necessary to evolve into better situations.  With that being said, I do not want the ability of being a certain role to go away, but I do think it needs to evolve so that if that one role is not available it doesn't inconvenience other people.  Done right, the removal of trinity can be a good thing for MMO's.

So let me get this straight -- every character can be up to 40 different roles, not counting multiclass, including cleric in this example, and you're worried that one won't be online to heal you?  You could just swap into your cleric pants and problem solved, or am I missing something?

Well the OP doesn't want to be told that he has to DPS.

Here's hoping for dedicated healer/CC/support/tank/puller classes, which we already know aren't "required", whatever that means.

If the system allows allocation of skills towards healing abilities, or if heals are tied to weapons, and even classes wielding select weapons I am fine. I really don't want to be put into a place where I don't have any of the skills that tie directly to the success of my party. I want a clear line on how to benefit the party, and not be excluded from play based on play style preference.

Consoles will always be the 'slow cousin' of the PC. Fun to hang with, but a bit sloppy, and not going to the same college you do.

What are you talking about?  Have you ever actually played GW2?  Not only could you heal others in Guild Wars 2, any class can specialize to be able to heal others (Although Guardians and Water Elementalists were the best at it)

Water Elementalists using a staff could heal others with every attack using their #1 slot auto-attack.

Blood Necros, Tactical Warriors and Inspiration Mesmers also heal others, although they do so by giving others a regeneration buff and stacking +boon duration and +healing.  (Mesmers also need specific traits to do it - my build was Chaos/Inspiration spreading boons around to all allies)

 

I know this thread isn't about GW2, but many people are comparing it to GW2 and making claims about GW2 that aren't true.

I played a staff Ele to 80 and the healing was best in the game, however, you could just spam 2-3 abilities and that was it. SO you would jump back and forth between mediocre DPS in fire/earth/air and then back to water for some MEH healing. Rinse/repeat, and run to the zerg.

I hope EQN does more to make healing/support complex and a challenge to play. If not, then why have it, just DPS race to the end and respawn.

The healing role shouldnt be as op as they are in other mmo's. It should be hard to support one player and not possible to support everyone in one room like in wow.

The AI could be smarter, certainly would help the gameplay. However, if AI was really really 'smart', how would it behave? It would drop stuns/snares and attack either the thing hitting it the hardest (biggest threat to its life), or the thing healing the things hitting it. If AI was smart enough.

So that means it will be a DPS pong, but the question still remains on how they handle heals. The GW2 vid posted here shows how lame a DPS zerg can be, and the little green ticks of heals for some random attribute is the shinning example of how they tried to force everyone to play one way. Beautiful game, amazing worlds, but I just did not have a class I was interested in playing.

If the AI was truly smart, it would hide with 50 of its buddies in the woods and jump us from behind, or see us coming and pick flight vs fight.... Run away!! Run away!!

You mean, build the game completely around you, laughably stupid mobs and all, so you get a dedicated role?  I've played that game over and over again.  Different art styles.  Different pantheon of gods.  Different names for their dragons, but the same game.

My apologies. Really, sorry for taking up a spot in your DPS games with my wishy washy ideas of a fantasy MMORPG. I guess I will have to sell the house and move back in with mom and dad to play D&D in the basement.

Feel free to sneak, stab, sneak, spin spin spin, and then stealth followed by berating the guy with heal gear all you want. That has never been done before, and sure to be a huge commercial success.

The lack of taunts will not affect Healing significantly, but the fact that there may be no real meaty heals or Targetted/AoE Heals will change the game for the Heal-Heavy class into a pro-active and quick reaction situation that may require the "Healer" to intervene and have their Friendly Target cease fire and move.

It's not tab target healing, and I feel you on that, but there has to be a way to maximize the ability to help friendly players in the game. I really hope that they do some sort of compromise that results in DPS being part of the solution and not the whole solution. I like playing Tank types, and Healing types, as well as support types. If they don't pull out something great on that front the game will be a gimmick with a half-assed MMO slapped on it.

This is why I have hope... Thank you, and my fingers are crossed they have something real.

Which is exactly what the people pushing the GW2 system said, but they don't get any cash from me or players like me anymore, and is widely considered a disappointment. The play it the way we tell you means people will take their business where they can get what they are looking for.

I am not saying it cant be done, but am asking to be included. EQ is near and dear to many of us, and as he pointed out, we have been playing at D&D since the 70's. There is a reason for that. You got a group of adventures, not a group of thieves or warriors, but a diverse mix with healing being one of the cornerstones of a well rounded party.

We do have classes that, I don’t want to say lean towards a role, but certainly will have abilities that fit more in line with what you think of as a healer or a tank. Classes with abilities that heal are all I am asking for, but the key of "if they are advantageous or not" is really the generator of concern for me. 

I stopped playing GW2 when four dps guys I was trying to heal berated me for 10 minutes for wasting a spot in RVR. People can be turds, but really, they were right. My interest in playing 'my way' was a liability to them.

Much of the EQN information smacks of the same DPS only mechanics.
