I have keys for both Defiance and Firefall and I must say, Defiance is shaping up to be really good.... that being said I once said the same thing about Firefall until a lot of the changes to healing. I hate to say this to Red 5, were this a choice between Defiance and Firefall, go for Defiance ;) That being said.... Firefall is meant to be f2p so it wouldn't kill you to play both :D Not much can be said about Defiance at this time, past what media have said as the content is still under NDA. I'm hoping that NDA will be lifted for the upcoming beta test. |

[Column] General: Gamers in the Game Industry

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Smedley, if you dont game yourself, how can you design for gamers? Yes you can go off "stats" but thats not going to give you the full picture, gamers know what works and what doesnt for you, its hard for a non gamer to even understand the culture, I've tried educating some :P

A PvE content patch would be nice, rather than just balancing ..... Sleeping Quagans and Distracted Skritt don't help with this.

From what I can see there isnt much grind *until* you get to making a legendary which seems it will be very grindy farming wise.

[Column] The Secret World: A Complex Issue for Funcom
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 8/15/12 1:11:47 PM
F2P can be done appallingly with no regard to the player past being a cash cow, these are the games that are doomed to fail, however.... it can be done really well also, with the attitude of pumping out all they can for the player to keep their interest. I love TSW to death but my one issue with it is that it requires university knowledge/research skills, unless you use a walkthrough...... I used to love this but it seems investigation missions have got increasingly hard, they were fun in Kingsmouth/Savage Coast, other than the story component, I sadly cant say the same for Egypt. |

anyone else a bit shocked at the cost of this game
General Discussion « Guild Wars 2 3/16/12 2:11:19 PM
Standard is fine at around $60, but the initial time I saw the collectors at $150 I was a little shocked, although looking back I shouldnt be surprised, this is a trend we've seen in other games. What hurts is here in Australia we're paying around USD$200 |

General: Why You’re Not a Beta Tester
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 6/24/11 2:34:33 PM
I remember the early days, maybe not as early as you, also. I've seen betas go from "Oh a bug, lets report it" to "Oh cool, I'm in the open beta, I get to preview the game" When people complain its buggy and I remind them its a beta and we're here to bug test, I'm met with "thats not how a beta test works anymore, they do all that with their internal bug testing team" As said previously the 'preview' attitude does lead to the complaining about bugs etc and "I'm not buying this crap", because they expect previews to be the same quality as live. I remember when bug reporting tools were evolving, but it seems they deevolved *puzzled look* from the days where you had to go to the forum to post, to the days you could type /bug and you could post without having to leave what you're doing, reducing bug testing down time. Although, you have to laugh when bugs get squished and the game gets released with non game breaking bugs, such as mines producing donkeys o.0 IMO if they want actual testing to be done they need to screen who they accept better and get the tools in to do so more efficiently and be clear participation is conditional on bug testing, its not a free ride. |

General: Conan’s Hybridian Adventure, Wizardry Going MMO?
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 5/30/11 3:26:45 PM
While Wizardry would be cool, Might and Magic would be awesome, with the death of NWC and 3DO followed by the buyout by Ubisoft, we havent seen another. While Might and Magic: Heroes Kingdoms may have been released a while back without much success, Might and Magic itself is a *completely* different game although related in lore. |

You're giving the word itself too much power. Reacting to someone like that with "grow up" or "go see a psychiatrist" to me is just someone trying to make something their business wich isnt, also its the most pointless comment ever because someone isnt going to grow up because someone told them to on the internet or going to see a psychiatrist for that matter. At best you might tell them you're offended by their name and they might tell you why they named themselves as that, wich probably would be to create a reaction in people around them. Lastly please dont dictate how a mature adult should react to something just because you react in a specific way to it, in my oppinion the people making a deal out of this, small or big, are the immature ones for not being able to handle a word that probably a kid choose for himself to get some "lols".
I hate to say this but it *is* our business..... the second something goes from the privacy of your own house, where its only the business of those in the house or outside of private conversation, where its only the business of those in said conversation, it becomes the business of those that are exposed to or involved in said exposure. Note: We, the players, dont dictate how you can act, the EULA & CoC you agree to when you enter, dictates how you may behave as the behaviour happens on PRIVATE property and it is their right to address said behaviour in their property as much as its yours to do so in your house etc. For those wanting "Free Speech" which doesnt apply to private premises, might I recommend that maybe a system without a Code of Conduct which is completely unmoderated could be the best place for you, then you can /ignore all those who berate you for your behaviour and people could be as big an asshat as they wanted :D Desensitizing our children to the word which names the act, is *not* what we should be doing, allowing it just says to the children that we dont care To those saying grow up, if you're 18 and offended quit playing..... I say this..... If it were an 18+ game that allowed such you'd have a point but sadly the rating isnt 18+, the rating is assigned by in game content (not player created) and the Code of Conduct they apply to said game. The Code of Conduct in this case is strict enough to allow younger people in, therefore the argument of "people 18+ should grow up" does not apply. |

Having been one in the past I can tell you that they're dealing with these type of jackasses every second of their day and worse. Someone here also brought up another good point. You've heard of violence resulting from games in RL, right? Ok, what happens if a "pedophile hunter" got hold of this persons details somehow, they could also be targetted.... how would it be to be killed over a joke? BTW I used the name in context of the thread, the other had no context or purpose other than to stir up a community ; ) and pedophiles (not just the name) are insta deleted and likely reported to the feds..... see the issue here? Jay - I would report it had I witnessed it myself but unfortunately I havent. Even though I'm no longer a GM on any game, I do still help them out wherever I can |

All I can say after just reading the first page is OMG!!!!!!!!!! Yes they're just words but the acts that are represented are illegal!!! You think its fine to molest a 10 year old? If you do you have SEVERE problems and shouldnt be allowed near ANY under 18s. No, saying the word is ok, isnt the same thing as saying being a pedophile is, but its not damn far off the mark. I fully agree with the OP and if it hasnt already been, it should be reported to NCSOFT *immediately* I know they wont stand for that crap and will address it, unfortunately however you get the kids thinking its cool and if its not nipped fast enough, one goes another will pop up. I have experience with whats tollerated and whats not and I know the act, is a deal with it situatuion, no questions asked and illegal discussions, which the name prompts is also a matter that gets addressed. So shut up with your damn cotton wool accusations and take a long hard think about what is right and wrong and if you can honestly tell me its ok to, say, rape an 8 yr old and the law agrees with you, I'll shut up...... If you believe this is ok however, you need a SERIOUS attitude adjustment......... dont spose they'll introduce shock therapy to deal with these morons? |

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning: Hickman on WAR's Biggest Mistakes
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/17/09 2:29:42 PM
I beg to differ on the problems that existed. Dont get me wrong theres some *great* points to WAR but as I'm mostly PvE based it wasnt enough to keep me on its own. The issues I had with PvE are: Yes they encouraged groups on one hand but on the other the quests were solo friendly not group. EG instead of say a quest update being for an entire party, it updated for only one person, with things like drops. Why group, which is equally as slow? Theres no incentive..... Given that however, some cant or dont want to group, so it cant be made so hard as they cant... theres many reasons for solo players. The dungeons, at least the starter one, the sewers was very lack luster...... Oh I blinked..... You mean its over? X-P Second issue for me was the crafting.... I'm a huge crafter but I'm sorry, innovation can be the best thing and can also ruin a game, to prove that just look at TCoS that recently got pulled back into redevelopment due to it. In the case of WAR crafting it was the straw that broke the camels back for me.... I'm more one for component list crafting. However, I loved the PQs, the Campaigns and RvR, my only concern was what happens with an older server? Generally, at least PvP wise, it would mean lower players couldnt PvP (due to lack of non chickens) until they got to higher lvls. Yes I know I'm likely to get the fanboi's coming from every side at me, no one seems to like their game criticized, even if what is said they know to be true, however it is important for Mythic to know where they went wrong..... yes they read boards but want to keep the player base, want to get old players back and have new players join. |

Aion: Open Beta Ends, the Wait Begins
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 9/15/09 3:47:17 PM
After *finally* getting into beta, I had originally had an issue with unclear instructions for the NCSoft launcher and regions (I'd been stuck on an EU server when I normally get assigned NA) I didnt get to 30, 1 because I was testing the water with several types of characters and 2 because of the late start, I was impressed enough to pre order. I cannot speak for NA servers but with EU, after the final patch was deployed most of the lag disappeared, after the first issue with authenticating, which was nothing more than lack of information on how to launch, I saw next to no lag and the only gameguard error I got, seemed to be related to when the authentication server was down, I tried later and got in no issues. Beta I expect bouncy servers and teething issues.... whats important is by the end it seemed to be working fine, but release will be the proof of the pudding. My other half and I will be in on the 20th, assuming someone can get us a code on time....... currently we're on "back order" with 4 days to go X-P No sign of a pre order code via Game 2 days after order, just the back order status. The annoying thing about this is yesterday our *first* games store (yes we live in the dark ages) showed up as opening this week and have preorder packs available but we've already paid Game for ours yet havent got our code. X-P Hoping they get their codes by the 21st (20th US time) |
