i know there are a few f2p mmo like maple story, angels online and sos that may appeal to younger girls...but they all kinda suck...

50% of the population (on average) is female, and as you pointed out, the majority of that 50% is untapped in terms of interactive entertainment.  I would be surprised if companies DIDN'T try to make a game specially for women :)

At the Sony GDC party, a group called GIRL (gamers in real life) spoke about females in the industry; they've brought together a fairly even ratio of females and males to work on the Agency (their upcoming MMO) in hopes that the female staffers can help make the game more appealing to women.  While I'm cautious about their approach - after all, the "gamer girls" they have on staff are already gamers, and they are trying to tap into the NON-gamer females - it's a great move in the right direction.

Don't count women out of the game (yuk yuk) just yet; in my opinion, its just a matter of time until interactive entertainment doesn't care a lick about gender.  As they say, history repeats itself - once upon a time there weren't even women in PLAYS, and males played both genders.  Get ready, because the female gamer population is only growing :)

this is such a good game. its been the only thing ive played for the past 3 days lol. its just a good game; i can log on before going to school, hear "skill training complete", and start training another skill. get home, log on, train another skill, then go do homework or whatever i choose.

the missions are also fun. even though i feel overwhelmed when im surrounded by rats and frantically killing/locking/orbiting/killing its very satisfying. ive already lost 1 ship because connection loss during a mission. spent 2hours today jumping from station to station getting my new/replacement parts. i had the 2nd highest insurance so it wasnt THAT bad. went from 300k to 600k in about 2 or 3 hours.

this is one of my favorite MMOs for sure. my favorite is Tabula Rasa which I like too for its casual style, much like EVE.

Welcome to EVE, drlklunk!  EUni helped me get to know the game while I was working on my review; I highly suggest them and it sounds like you are doing a great job meeting the right people.

This thread has derailed - locking :)

Hmm, we'll toss it around - no promises, though!

maxstone just about said it all; we can't make up news to publish...well we could, but I don't think that'd sate your appetite ;)

First of all avatar uploading in the member profile of mmorpg.com is broken. Update: just discovered the spellcheck here is also broken.

Secondly: how on Earth does Eve consistently get such good scores? Does no one notice that the tutorial missions are broken? Does no one notice the endless spelling mistakes? Or the awful character art? Or the terrible dialog of NPCs? Or the boring NPC missions? Or the awful auto-pilot? Or the lack of help? Etc, etc, etc, freaking etc...

This game never gets any better. 10 year old + games like Escape Velocity continue to outclass it when it comes to the basics of Elite style gameplay. WTF is going on with these reviewers?

How can the very basics like ACTUALLY having FUN and WORKING tutorial missions without spelling mistakes be ignored? CCP have had YEARS to perfect this game and it still has no help under help???

I'm sorry, but I just don't get it.

Hmm, the tutorial worked fine for me, I haven't seen any glaring spelling mistakes, and I like the character art.  The NPC dialog is pretty useless, but I think the NPC missions are fun...c'mon, no love for World's Collide? Extraveganzas? Gone Berserk?! ;)

On autopilot - I am guessing you mean the fact that it doesn't warp you right on top of the gate.  In my opinion, that's a great way to balance it: autopilot takes twice as long as manual, but hey, you don't have to be there!  Help can be found in the right channels...such as the Rookie channel, the E-Uni channel, and many others.

In the end, I think everyone has different tastes and dislikes when it comes to games...just like food, or wine, or clothing.  I don't love every game, nor do I expect you to, but that doesn't mean NO ONE out there is having fun with it :)

Actually, the staff writers/moderators have no contact with advertisors :)

So what? You guys enforce your rules of conduct much more stringently on posters who are critical of your advertisers than you do on fanboys. There are a bunch of SOE yes-men who constantly troll the SWG vet forum who *never* get moderated yet I got a warning this morning for "resurrecting" a thread that was all of one day old. I sent a message to community@mmorpg.com and never heard back. Shocking...

Actually, I'm community@mmorpg.com and I never got your email :)  I'm guesisng, though, that by "ressurecting" you mean you reopened a thread that was locked or deleted.  Either way, you are welcome to email me again and hopefully this one'll come through!

In regards to our RoC, we do not enforce the RoC more or less strictly according to advertisements.  Never have, never will :)

I come here a lot to read the forums, post, and look at pictures. Seriously, thats about it.

As far as objectivity goes, this site cannot be relied upon. There previews read like advertisements, there reviews read like someone is afraid their advertising banners will get pulled if they shell it.

When you see big articles abour how the staff went to 'visit' the studio for a big behind the scenes look at a game. You can probably find similar articles on similar sites then too. This is because the studio usually pays to have the journalist visit, covers travel, board, etc. So its expected that you post a nice, fluffy, multi-page spread about your time here. They are basically buying coverage.

So, hang out, read the forums, look at screenshots, but seriously,  anything beyond that is like watching commercials and changing hte channel when the show comes on.

Actually, the staff writers/moderators have no contact with advertisors :)

I will look into the issue :)

We give out titles to verified game employees :)

Thank you!  I'll pass these on to our editor.

Respoding to the writers comment on my first post:

Yes I did read both parts of your review and my comment was in no way a critiscism of you but a complement to the depth of the game. I agree with some of the earlier sentiment that games such as Eve can only be reviewed in summary fashion unless you have been a long term player and hav had the opportunity to try all aspects.

You clearly, and honestly, did not try to portray yourself as such and therefore I stand by my complementary comments of both the game and your review.

Thank you!  I just wanted to make sure you hadn't missed the first half :)

Use the MMORPG.com Galleries! ;)

That's what I was trying but after I upload it doesn't redirect properly so it isn't in my gallery.

Hmm, can you explain further?  Toss me an email at community@mmorpg.com :)

The idea which PvP yield better rewards is about as presponderous to me as the concept of raiding in EQ.

It also explain why I would NEVER even try a trial of such a lousy game.

If you need to give more rewards to players for them to PvP, then your core design is flawed beyond repair.

Hm, maybe I conveyed it wrong; it's risk vs reward, not reward for PVP.  I am sure there are players who make a lot of ISK for PVP, but there are also many who PVE to support their PVP habbits.

PVP is a METHOD of high reward for pirates and corps, but a lot of ISK comes from PVE.  What I meant by risk vs reward was that your PVE rewards are much higher in 0.0 space, where there's a chance of getting jumped by pirates or another corp.

Let others know you are looking for a 3 day trial using this thread (ONLY this thread)! =)  Posts requesting/offering buddy keys outside of this thread will be deleted.

Cubbycat's Invite Method

IF YOU ARE REQUESTING AN INVITE:

1. Request. Post a message requesting that you be invited. Leave your e-mail address. Understand that if your e-mail address is not posted, other users cannot invite you.

2. Wait. If the person inviting follows these guidlines, they should post if they've invited you.

3. Edit. As soon as you recieve your request, edit your post to indicate you recieved it.

IF YOU ARE INVITING OTHERS:

1. Look. Scroll through the posts looking for people requesting invites.

2. Check. Make sure that someone else hasn't already invited them.

3. Invite.

4. Post. Post that you have invited those people so that people won't get multiple invites.

PS- did anyone spot the pun in this post?! :)

Not a bad review IMO given that its quite a short article for a game which has such complex depth. I think the real special aspect of this game is its ability to be so popular whilst being a distinct genre and where the economy and game is largly player influenced.

I really enjoyed my time with Eve, especially as it forced me to think about how i wanted to play rather than just grind a level after a level. The community are excellent and I made many new friends in this game.

The game will not appeal to huge sections of the MMO community, in its curent guise, due to its over-riding PVP focus and the lack of easy pick up and play charachetristics. I hope that it continues to grow and develop, especially the planet side avatar aspects that are coming soon.

Truly this is a true success story for the genre and the developers.

Well done.

Did you see part 1?! ;)

On manufacturing - The difference between the ATITD/Vanguard systems (which I cited) and the EVE system is that, in ATITD/VG, you actually have a minigame for each item you craft.  You have to cut the gems, you have to smith the items, etc.  In EVE, you get a blueprint, have the skills/materials, and start your research/production at a station from what I understand.  No, the trade system is not SIMPLE, but there's no minigame of complications or gem and blade angles, etc.

In terms of my experience with the game, there is a big difference between reviewing an MMO and reviewing a single player title.  In single player games, I absolutely agree that the reviewer needs to finish the game and have complete knowledge of its functions, however, single player games are also FINITE.  MMO worlds have a plethora of experiences; at best it would take years to complete them all, at worst it's actually impossible.  I've never seen a review of LOTRO written by someone who has taken every class/race to max level, AND ever PVP race to max skill.

Personally, I'd rather say "I haven'treally tried PvP but I hear it's great" then publish hearsay under my name.  I intend to continue playing EVE and will probably move into 0.0 very shortly.  In the meantime, if you'd like to do a manufacturing or PVP-centered article, check out our Opportunities page :)

{ Mod Edit }

As to those who would prefer a seasoned PVP veteran write a review, nothing's stopping you, feel free to post away.  MMORPG can't help it if they don't have staffers who are seasoned vets in every game.

Besides, reviews generally written to entice new players to join a game, and this one covers the basics that every noob wants to know.

No point it describing life in Fleet Battleship wars that a player won't see for 6 months anyways. (besides, then you have to tell them about lag, blobs and the "fun" of gatecamping.

Over all, a decent review, and I'll look forward to the next one.

No effence but this is why we need seasoned veteran's writing the reveiw's. What you just said right there is completly false and is why alotof people get turned away from EVE because of these MMO site's that dont play past 2 week's. A new pilot can get into 0.0 pvp fleet battle's within 3 week's. This is why EVE is so great because you dont need to spend 6 mounth's-a year before the fun starts. Im sorry but please dont say thing's that are untrue.

(I am going by my own experiences in the game over a 7 mounth period)

I've been playing for about 4 1/2 months :)  And I agree, you CAN start fleet battles on DAY ONE, even!

The first sci-fi TV show/movie that I liked was Firefly.  Until then, I was busy reading fantasy novels, I guess! ;)
