It's actually starting to change now, finally, with more and more games requiring dual core processors, and really taking advantage of quad core. Fallen Earth comes to mind immediately. Although it is true that current games and apps for the MOST PART don't take advantage of multiple cores...let's not discount the possibility that the potential of almost limitless PC power could take gaming to an entirely new level. Someone like John Carmack is likely to make such a game..."just because". We're talking about the kind of raw power that could finally give us photo-realistic gaming, in a truely massive, realistic environment. With 3D display technology finally starting to make a real break out into the consumer market, and motion-control becoming all the rage....this could be the first step in the direction of a truely virtual environment. So long as they don't just make another wow-clone instead |

maybe not....there were no windows in SWG houses either. I'm almost beginning to hope that there's more to this game than meets the eye. |

No Aion, no Champions Online ? What are you playing instead ?

No MMOs right now....none worth playing at the moment. Instead, I'm playing through The Witcher again, and digging up old favorites from the software closet. |

yes. I've tested the game extensively on dual and single core machines. You really need at least a dual core (and a powerful one at that) to run FE decently. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: New Class Revealed: Sith Warrior!

Well, I guess you would try and make us believe that Darth Vader was the first Sith Warrior to ever exist and certainly the first one to wear armor. The Sith Empire is tens of thousands of years old, I'm sure there were all kinds of Darths before Vader and I'm sure some of them could have possibly worn armor just for the hell of it. It's iconic for the Star Wars Universe, not just episodes 1 -6. Smugglers existed before Solo as did Bounty Hunters before Boba Fett. I don't know why you keep harping on a game you obviously don't like. We got it the first few hundred posts, maybe it's time you moved on and left us in peace.
You're confused. The quote I added at the beginning of my post was from the linked interview. I'm not the one who seems to think that Vader was the first Sith warrior, man. My entire point was that they are ignoring THE OLD REPUBLIC EU entirely, and basing this game off EP 1-6 "iconic" characters, in an effort to make the game more "Star Warsy". Further evidence of the dumbing down of the game, due to the percieved stupidity of their target audience. |

Fallen Earth: Open Beta Begins! NDA Lifted!

The lowest I've ever gotten in Embry is 20 fps and I'm playing on a laptop with a video card the game reports as unsupported. Normal FPS in town is ~30 and outside is around 75. I agree that some optimization should occur becasue the range between highest and lowest FPS seems too large.
I'm gonna have to call bullshit here, unless I see a screenshot. Sorry, man...nothng personal, but for MONTHS we've all been discussing the performance problems in this game, and Embry is the worst case of the problem. Considering that people with top of the line desktops are, and have been, reporting frame rates as low as ONE FRAME PER SECOND in Embry, I'm gonna need to see proof. Sorry man. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: New Class Revealed: Sith Warrior!

"Darth Vader is the most famous example of a Sith wearing armor. While Vader's armor was really a life support suit, we felt that wearing armor was an iconic part of the class, especially if we were going to [emulate] Vader." Ah...yeah. How ICONIC, and STAR-WARSY! First off, this is the Old Republic, right?? So why do they keep making classes modeled around EP 1-6 characters?? IE: the "Sith Warrior" is modeled after Vader. The Smuggler is modeled after Solo. I know why....they want to make sure that people get that iconic, Star-Warsy feel that they've been trying so hard to convey...and we all kno that can't be done without playing a pre-defined role, modeled after a pre-established character, right? /vomit I'm suprised they just don't expect you to play one of several pre-made characters, so they can control EVERY aspect of the game, while you progress on rails toward your iconic destiny. This is NOT an MMORPG. |

Fallen Earth: Open Beta Begins! NDA Lifted!

It could use some more optimization but I keep hearing how horrible it plays and its like a slideshow and I haven't seen that happen yet. I don't have a super computer either. Just a E8400 AtI 4950 and 4 gigs of ram on xp.

Fallen Earth: Open Beta Begins! NDA Lifted!
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/18/09 8:10:06 PM
I've been beta testing this title for a few months now, and I have to say, I love everything about the game except for the performance issues. Instead of optimising the code, they upped the system requirements...in essence, using brute force and hardware to cover up their poor coding. Granted there have been SOME improvements in performance lately...but nowhere near enough. THis, more than anything, IMO, might hurt sub numbers for this game. |

Not even close. First off, FE isn't an open PVP game, and there is no player looting at all. There's no huge skill-grind, ala Darkfall. Darkfall runs circles around FE performance-wise. No, no.....FE is really nothing like DF at all. More like Anarchy Online meets Neocron, Meets SWG, meets Fallout....and then tweaked and changed to be different still. Some have likened it to EVE on the ground...but even that doesn't quite explain it.

Good. Now that the NDA is down, I can actually speak about the game, instead of pretending that I'm not in beta. First off.....I like the game. I see it's potential. The graphics aren't bad.....they're acceptable, IMO. The crafting system is realistic, and entertaining enough. What drives me fucking NUTS about the game is that it runs like SHIT. Seriously, look at the system requirements for the game. Far and above any other MMORPG to date, and above almost all single player games. And in fact, those were changed very recently from much lower specs. This is because the game runs like ass, the coding sucks, and their solution was to throw hardware at it. Brute force, instead of clean code. People with quad cores and the latest hardware have been reporting dips in FPS to the single fucking digits in this game. And this isn't during huge battles, mind you...it's just riding into town...and in beta, with only a fraction of the population that we'll see in live. Ok, so low FPS might not be the killer in a standard MMO...but don't forget, this is a MMOFPS. How much fun do you think having 10 fps is going to be in PVP, with only a few others in the area? I, and several other beta testers tried really hard to get the DEVs to clean up the code, and work on performance. We offered theories, did testing, all but butchered our systems to help troubleshoot the problems and try to get decent performance. Nothing...the game still runs like ass. And so I have this terrible feeling that all the potential of this game is going to be wasted....due to the fact that only the highest end machines can get even "decent" performance. Time will tell, I guess. Open beta is here, release is not far off. And the more people that enter the game, the more the performance issues are going to become GLARINGLY obvious. |

Yeah, even WWIIOL has a "grind"....getting rank so you can use better weapons, create missions, etc. It's not that bad though. Problem is that the last time I played, it seemed to be that all the "vets" and mature players were Axis, and the legions of wow kiddies and x-box kidz were allies. This led to a pretty frustrating situation, where allies were on a 20sec plus spawn delay (Read: overpopulated) and axis were simply trying to hold the line. After a couple weeks of this, I decided to "go on leave" again.....we'll see how it shapes up in theture, since I go back to it once or twice a year to see how it's doing.
