Combat over in 5 to 10 seconds? You left out just a few things:

- Planning the route over which to move troops to maximize surprise
- Dividing up forces into small groups travelling seperately in order to minimize detection
- Dealing with the occasional bandits, wolves, and bears that sometimes come out of nowhere (especially in dense woods at night)
- Performing some recon on every settlement you pass through, friendly or enemy, to see what they're up to
- Sending out scouts ahead of your main force to find enemies and determine who they are and what their combat skill may be
- Deploying some decoy soldiers to attempt to divide the enemy (although this usually does not work too well)
- Finding ground which might offer a tactical advantage or maybe at least minimize your enemy's tactical advantages
- Determining whether there is a reasonable chance of success before committing to the battle and weighing the risks (loss of valuable armor/weapons) versus the gains (prestige)
- Deploying your force into a somewhat organized formation putting your veterans in the front line and establishing reserves
- Deploying a flanking force that uses cover to advance from behind (a fighter is easier to hit when he is not facing you)
- Forming a defensive perimeter if you are successful in the engagement in order to allow some to collect loot
- Patching up some of your injured with treatment skills and materials
- Chasing down any enemy survivors who have run away
- Performing an orderly exit of the area to minimize the chance of ambushes by respawning enemy
- Upon returning home, putting the loot in your trophy area with all the rest and then talking forever with your guild mates about your great deeds past and present :-)

 

All of the above can (and probably should) be performed with as few as 4 or 5 soldiers in your force.  I have seen it done with 10 to 15 when roman guilds have teamed up to fight.

I recently tried RV again, got disappointed.

I joined in on a fairly big (for RV raid) We travelled for over an hour because of my low fitness and getting people online and in the same place)

Our arrival at the 18th board was greeted with complete and utter silence, not a single member on the board, and since combustion isn't in, we couldn't do anything.

Eventually we started duelling among ourselves, at which point a single roman came onto the board and we all crashed because the server died.

Combat wasn't over in 5 to 10 seconds, it never happened.

Now, on to real business.. Darkfall will almost certainly kill RV, The hundred has reformed and now counts almost 60 players from RV, past and present ones, among others the entire Barbarian faction and a great deal of romans. Even Vlad has joined us now. There is an invitation up for anyone who has played RV.

Wait for darkfall beta instead :p

I must admit, even I'm starting to like what I see on the RV forums more and more... the trolling in this thread is pretty unjustified...

While I agree totally with your post, it's not exactly what I meant here...

What the lead dev does very well is

A) claim that he's a world leading authoritay

B) Harbour grudges

A is self explanatory

B needs some explaining, me and a good friend of mine were banned "for exploiting", the real reason was that the dev just didn't like our game style and wanted to ban us for a valid reason rather than upset the community by banning people for what looked like no reason. Naturally we changed IP's and used proxies to get past their forums bans etc etc etc, both got new accounts.. One day I awoke to find that "my forum priveliges had been revoked". This means that you can't access your character page to request a new password(you can't use your own password, they have to give you one...), since it's linked to the foums account. So if you've forgotten your game password you can't play. I created a new forums account to complain about this, and naturally my character just got perma'd, IP banned etc etc etc.

in that case the dev had no idea who I actually was, and just banned me for the sheer nerve of asking to be able to access the game, his reply on the matter was "You had full world access, by complaining  about the ban you got banned" all further responses were left unanswered.

Would you like to play a game like that? 90% of the players who started at beta have been banned in this fashion. The other 10% have left. They EVEN banned cynewulf, the player single handedly responsible for half the accounts sold, most likely.

The game now is nothing like it was back in BETA. Game performance is good now and very stable compared to a few months ago.

Most of us started playing this game on radeon 9200-9800's or geforce 5700's :p

To be fair though, the last time I played it was fairly stable..

How was the lag with the 100 NPC's? I heard a bit about it in IRC but I was a bit drunk so I didn't catch most of it.

I wasn't too hopeful about the storyline after the british empire fiasco, but if it's shaping up to be good I might get another character at some point and give it a go.

- is banned from the game,

- dropped 2500 posts of useless crap in the RV forums, and has just continued it here,

I do still care for this game, If it continues getting better I might start playing again. If you want to tell someone off for trolling here, flame shane instead.

So, let me recap. Just because a minority of people don't actually like me and want me struck from the record doesn't mean I'm going away,  I joined the RV community in january 2004 and I will continue to stick by it. The fact that the KFR doesn't like me, since the dev or the game do not make the community, the community makes the community. Just because some of them don't have a sense of humour doesn't mean it doesn't need a bit of comic relief.

Then again, we all know you just posted this to detract from the fact that my argument is valid and therefore that you are wrong. You have a history of doing this on the RV forums too.

I am not pointing the finger at anyone, I am stating that 18th members have cheated and exploited but none have ever been punished. as you have so eloquently reiterated for me.

I've always accepted that I was banned due to my own actions, I just believe that I was banned unjustly.

It's a pity, but I bought WoW the other day after vowing to never buy it EVER when it first came out... WoW is more fun than RV, even has less of a grind, is balanced better...

he said that he wanted a decent post up on the forums from the devs stating why, and KFR did not deliver, so he posted it here. Your ability to not read half the post then flame, flame, flame astounds me.
