What if...

A Damage Shield would apply an "aggro multiplier", so the wearer of such a buff is considered at 80%, 60% or even less of what his aggro should be?

Casting a damage shield on the healer, on the wizard or on an aggro magnet should help reduce the final aggro value of the target, as long as the buff is running.  I always find it silly to see a "intelligent mob" going aggressively against someone who reflect damage.

Ideally they should consider non-melee attacks as more intereting vs these opponents, but at the very least, they should try to get rid of other targets before, unless there is an overwhelming amount of aggro to tell them to go on this target (taunt/stickiness, DD/DoT/Debuff receive from 1 target, target is near death, etc.)

In most PnP games, damage shield main usage is to deter attacks with impossible high amount of damage returned.

If you don't like PvP/RvR &&&&&&  You are an achiever.  Then WAR is definitely problematic.

If you are NOT an achiever, I can't say, I didn't bother to consider it from an unachieving point of view.

Achievers are the players which play the game for itself, if other peoples are offline/online, cool/morons, they are still playing regardless.  They are the peoples who make sure there is a minimum MMO feeling.  Without achievers, many PvE players will log in, see nobody online for PvE, and log off.  Achievers usually don't make up for a great community or whatever, but they assure there is a minimum to keep other players motivated.

Medieval Total War 1...again...and again...and again.  I don't RTS ever.  :)

I am definitely looking for other games

This website is pro-RvR and pro-PvP.

There is nothing wrong with that.  Obviously, they give extra concerns to games which please them on these points.

I just hope they would have understood that my concerns about WAR are genuine and sincere...and that it would improve the game substiantally if they would manage to please the PvE hardcore Care Bear that I am.  Oh well...I can always go and hope for other titles I guess.

If you want to take it 1 step further, some peoples play only with their secondary.

I would not do either myself, I like my primary, I like my pets, I like everything which make my character stronger.  But I understand that some peoples put themselves such challenges.

I also see a guy taking tier 1-4 only, no matter the pool.  Again, not for me, but I understand they have quite some limitations.

Kinetic is prolly the worst example.  As they have the same % for speed boost.  But your point of primary vs secondary and earning at earlier levels stand.  This example is just the worst possible example you could pick...since the % are the same for speed boost.

Usually a secondary is between 10-33% weaker than a primary.  Not speed boost.  (Nor a tanker, as their secondary is 8% stronger than a Brute primary...but that would be another topic)

Again, having specific servers, some with casual labelled on them and where you gain XP a LOT faster would be very important.  Some other servers to cater to each major gameplay.

The days of the 1 server where everyone is forced into FFA PvP, full looting...these days are gone.  You can have 1 such server, but you need many variations, and yes, you do need a casual server.  Someone reach max level in 1 day on this server?  Good for them.  I ain't playing there.

For me, this game is a casualty of SOE CS.  I was never really motivated by this title, but I was planning to purchase it, if only to try it and to encourage different games, most likely quitting within the first week, but eh, who knows?

But after they mess it up and apply monthly fees for PotBS AFTER I cancel...this game is going to take the first hit, as I am vindicative.  It is not about the amount of money, it is about the principle, the trust.  If someone hit the cancel button, it is over.  If you mess it, then you check your log to see when the player stop playing.

It is a shame as the devs there have little to do with the CS and the big brother thingy, but there is no way I will let's bad charging behaviors go unpunished.

Considering SoE frauds me in the past.

If they get their ***** handed to them, I would heartfully laugh.

It has nothing to do with whoever they are against, I don't know them.  It could be almost anyone and I would wish them to beat SoE.

For me, if it is NCsoft I would trust them and would be willing to try.

If it is SoE, they wouldn't get my CC ever again; until they make amend.

Other companies, I am relatively open minded, but I rather keep it simple.  Monthly fee is simple, micro-transactions...maybe...

The denial of some fanbois is epic in proportion.  This thread is about why peoples won't play WAR.  Not about you trying to convince them otherwise.  Mythic has plenty of brown-nosers and they need the harsh reality contact a little more.  If you know what is good for you and your game, stop brown-nosing.  I suspect SoE employees are non-stop praising this game, just so the devs make amazingly outrageous mistakes.

The lack of a real PvE focus where the WAR has no consequences, on a server, a race or whatever is just saying you accept to lose more than half of the market right away, while it would have taken minimal efforts to ensure they can at least enjoy the game a little.

Addiction is not when you have nothing better to do, it is when it take precedence over everything else.

I think peoples are just better at understanding the meaning of addiction, and are also afraid of all the negative press it receive.

- Overview, in 1 minute someone must understand your game.

- Shorter.  Short and simple, can you reduce your paragraph to give the info.

- Don't repeat yourself.  You are not teaching here.  Repetition is for your yapping, not for your writting.

- Social skills + humility.  Designers can be sacrificed for the greater good of a game, however as long as you can promote the happiness and desire of the devs to make the game something great...

- Adapt to your doc...programmers = bulletpoints like this.  Client = Not my strongpoint, but you have to sell it.

- Grammar, vocabulary...

There are no "unique" way.  1 designer + 1 designer  = 3 designs docs.

Finally:

- Overconfidence.  You cannot change your design doc too often, it has to release...and each change could lead to delays.  There is a moment to change it, and a moment to developp a game.  This point is extremely important for LEAD peoples.

- Glamour, contact, friends...or whatever get you there.

- Designers must be willing to take the "evil role", when the programmer is working 80 hours a week, he needs someone to be angry at.  This evil role can goes to his superior...or to the designer.  This is not for you to decide, but for the programmers.  You are not fighting to get rid of this role.  It is a necessity, someone working 80 hours a week on something gotta blame it on someone.  This is what breaks most designers.  Prolly the place I fit the best in, kinda as the "lunatic evil".  I could substain endless fire there, thank you EQ forums, yet always smiling and trying to redirect everything to my "dreams of a better game". :P  Again, this is what break most designers.

PLEASE GTFO OF THIS GAME!!! Seriously, pvpers have what, 2 good pvp mmorpgs that aren't even really populated.. This is our chance to finally get a good mmo! Come on, pve carebears have over 50 other mmo's to go to where you don't have to worry about pvp. People, don't ruin this chance for pvpers to have fun. Sorry to be mean, but gtfo carebears

There are more PvP-MMOs then PvE-MMOs. (most games on the left, most buried projects, most games)

The most successfull MMOs are mostly PvE. (WoW, LotRO, CoX, EQ, EQ2)

If I would be serious about making a MMO, I would consider pleasing the PvE market as something very important.  Nothing prevent you from having PvE/PvP servers.  It is possible to design PvP features and drop them or adjust them on the PvE servers.

I intend to leave this game alone however, so just don't fuel me back in, with such threads, and I will leave you alone.  If you want a flame war because this is your nature as a PvPer, I guess you will find me on these forums.

Anofalye,

Your comparison of brutes to tanks is flawed. Brutes are damage dealers, more like scrappers than tanks. Masterminds were intended to be the tanks on V-side, according to Castle the dev.

Castle says in a recent post on the CoH forums:

BTW, here's something I don't think has ever been publicly stated before, but is "true" -- Masterminds were meant to be the Tanker equivalents on the Villainside, not Brutes. Brutes tend to overperform compared to what the original design was, they were meant to be closer to scrappers than to tankers. That mindset has evolved quite a bit based on how players are actually playing, but that was the original idea. And, before things go south, no, we aren't planning any changes based on that. I just wanted to offer a bit of "behind the scenes" insight.

boards.cityofheroes.com/showflat.php

EQ devs didn't intend monks to pull either.  Brutes are the tanks for villains.  Not MMs (they can't tank, so if the intend was to make them good tanks, LOL, it was a failure, not to mention they don't have taunt).  And tankers have MORE basic damage than a brute.  :(  This is not normal.  Brutes have 1 thing...a strong potential, and they are very lames and weak at start because of this potential.  Resisting status effect is just something which should be normal.  Apparently, the devs think otherwise.

I dunno why you guys keep resurrecting this thread.  My opinion will not change.  You are only making me angrier.  I am a game designer myself.  I know when something is wrong.  Especially when it is what I played the most.

I will recap my main issues:

- Brutes does 8% less damage than a tanker, they also have merely 75% of their defense/resist and a LOT less hps, the basic damage of a tanker should be 75% of a brute, without counting fury yet in.  Now that would be a primary power (and don't nerf anyone, always upgrade those which need it).  Tankers have more resists, more hps, more defense, this is a triple bonus...Brute should have more basic damage, more accuracy and fury.  Not even considering the fact tankers have gauntlet on top of this here.

- Fury is way to volatile, it move too fast and have too much of an impact.   Brutes need more basic damage, for about the same final result (kinda as if the fury meter always start at 33% but then it is harder to developp it, so the final result is about the same).

- Brutes have the BEST potential of any AT, damage/resist/defense/hps wise, but they are freaking lamers to start, how about reducing this potential a little and start better?  Why do you put a damage cap of half the usual value on 1 brute power (Lightning Rod)?  This make no sense.  Does your job properly.

- Brute build up is the same as a tanker, while it should be the same as a scrapper, primary for both, you already affect the basic damage, no need to affect BU, both have it as a primary.

- Brutes needs a LOT more status protection, in order to be equivalent to tankers.   They are tanking for villains...and tankers already have more resists, more hps and more defense.  Brutes NEEDS this extra protection.  Of course a soloer or casual player would not notice how badly brutes need it.  But they really need it, badly.  It is not normal that a brute get stunned for holding aggro and doing his job.

- Invul is underperforming compared to Granite.  It is naturally appealing to players for DESIGN reasons, all the more reason to make it a VERY good choice for tanking.  9 powers which stacks should definitely make you very close to the best if not the best set for tanking, especially that except for a tiny too hit buff, they are all on the defense/resist, no other set is even remotedly as defense-focus as this one...Rock for example is dealing damage.  If elves are popular, you don't nerf them.  You are the main tank all the time up to level 37, and suddenly, no more you.  There is something wrong here.  You don't change such basics in the middle of the game/end of the game (initially there was only 40 levels).

- Energy Melee/Super Strenght are outdamaging scrappers...give these 2 sets to scrappers ASAP.  (I know Brutes want broadswords even if I don't want them).

- Elect/Ela doesn't mix that well.  Most defensive damaging power with the most offensive shields.  Bad, bad, bad and bad.  Nobody want to be the tallest dwarf, but many will be because they trust you with these set which seem to naturally blend...

- Brutes are underperforming.  I dunno who make broad statements otherwise.  Brutes are popular among players, but they are, underperforming.  See, a set which is popular is not automatically strong.  It may denote weakness elsewhere, a desire for a precise gameplay, design reasons (who can't relate to fury?)...and so on.  See, best PvP groups are heroes...and if then you must pick villains, strangely the best group are mostly made of corruptors, or exceptionnally dominators/stalkers...brutes and MMs in PvP are a joke, they are underperforming...you don't build Fury over 40% in PvP...and at 40% you are merely where you should have been at start to be in between scrappers and tankers (not even considering the critical ability of the scrappers in).  CoV is underperforming (amount of players).  The most popular choices may very well all be underperforming.

And there must be many other...but these are those which come naturally to my mind as extremely annoying and unfair.  Again, in my long list of flaws, I am also a game designer (flash games only if you want to cheap shot me, still...).

If they want to put the focus a LITTLE on these adds.

Maybe they could add a mini monster.  A mob which is always your level.  Kinda like a freakshow faction.  These guys vandalize ads.  But they always drop an SO.  You also work on the "worning out" the ads concept.  The idea is to blend the ads in the surrounding.  Usually ads try to get your attention, not here, it is reverse, they don't really want it...the player is playing, don't want him to slip from that mindset, subliminal works better than harassment.

While you would be hunting for these guys, for the SO boost at level 10-40, you would invariably see some ads and be in a positive mind setting, knowing SOs are about to drop.  It doesn't have to be an uber loot, just something good at early levels...and some badges.  There would be many reasons to keep the ads FAR from the endgame, the mindset of the players been the first reason.

Heaven Tells no Lies --- Helloween.

I must say I absolutely love this song.  Dunno if it would qualify on my top 5 (Mirror Mirror (10 years old?, Blind Guardian), Highwayman (15 year old? McKennit), My Number One (kinda recent, Dream Evil), Land of Immortals (rhapsody...old) and Ask the Mountain (Vangelis, oldie)) but it would definitely make it to my top 10...considering I am extremely conservative and that most songs are quite old on this list...this is quite something in itself...for what it is worth to be on my top list. :P

I can say Mirror Mirror and Higwayman would still be in my favorite in 50 years. :p  Other, I dunno...Heaven Tells no Lies?  Maybe...still didn't listen to it enough yet however, can change a lot, just like Noldor song from Blind Guardian got a high start. :P

Uh?  I see peoples complaining...but I hardly know if these complains are legits or not.

When I resub (eventually), I will experience it and then judge it, as afterall, you can turn them off if they annoy you, which, shouldn't be needed unless they somehow manage to be intrusively annoying (like a purples-neon-glowing hard campaign).

Honestly, I feel I will just let's them be and run by...unless they are intrusive, in which case, I will turn them off, which would be a minor inconvenience.  But if they are done as the anti-alien scum in-game advertising, or the R.I.C. publicity, or the Cryptic publicity, they would definitely remain on.  As these ads could adds to the good feeling of the game.  Worn out McDonald/Coke sign so it is not an annoying red, that would be great and merely add to the game (Pepsi would require less worning out, as blue is less aggresive than red).  I am confident that the artistic devs would have the necessary clues, I am just unsure if they would be listened to.  Ads must not ruins the in-game ambiance.  Many ads would need a "worn out" look, to fit in the area where they are.

I would only have 2 complains with NCsoft CS, and considering I overplay the game a LOT, this is better than ANY competitor.  (1- Was unable to play on release of CoV because of a bug with pre-order, so I play 2 days before, then wait 11 days.   That was harsh and uncalled for, 2- They are slow to restore deleted characters.)  Again, beside these 2 tiny points, I don't see anything to complain at their CS.  TR cancelled no problem.  AA cancelled no problem.  CoX restored and cancelled over half a dozen times, no problem.  DR, no issues whatsoever.  I would award NCsoft a gold medal, not the platine (not perfect), but a gold.  Which is better than ANY MMO company out there.

your PvP analogy is all fine and good and I agree numbers will outweigh skill in certain scenario's (as 1 skilled mathematician couldn't do the work of 900 mathematicians with a slightly lower skill set), but what happens in the scenario of equal characters, equal gear, and equal opportunity to attack, one on one, those who have accumulated the better gaming strategy, aptitude, and knowledge of there attacks, what order they go in, when to use special attacks and when to save them, how to use there environment and how that particular game's mechanics offer advantages and disadvantages all combine into PvP skill for that game, does it not?

Well, PvP in MMO, if 1 vs 1, is fair about 5% of the time.  GvG is almost never fair, it would be way under 1%.  RvR "cannot" be fair.  I assume that in a fair fight, it would take "skill", but who would play a game where 95% of the time he is not doing something he enjoy?  I am not saying someone can't enjoy skilled-oriented battles in MMO-PvP, I say that someone wouldn't be playing the game for these.  (if 2 opponents want to fight, it is still not automatically qualifying as a "fair" fight, it is comon that 1 of the fighter is clearly no match for his opponent, weither he understands it or not, it gives a false sensation of skill to the winner, but it was butchery nonetheless, no matter if on an "emotional level" they get the idea the fight was fair).

See, in order to require "skill", it must be a challenging fight, this is something I do as a "minority" % in PvE solo/grouping, in PvP or Raiding the % of skill go down the drain dramatically.

Again, there are very little "skill reasons" to play MMOs, if I would be playing mostly for challenging stuff, I wouldn't be playing MMOs.  That doesn't mean I can't enjoy challenges and skill stuff, it means, it isn't the reason why I play the game.  PvP/Raiding offers even less "skill" encounters and challenges, you almost invariably crush the "challenge" or are crushed by it.  I enjoy solo/grouping in PvE for some reasons, I assume there must be "some reasons" to enjoy PvP or Raiding...but it isn't challenge or skill.

It is my belief that most players play for the "success" they get in the game (this can either be progression, reputation, social stuff, exploration or much more...they can all equal success in a way or another).  Skills or challenges have very little to do with that.  They are not anathema, but they are not encouraging it either...and are nearly absent from the game.   Most of my deaths I am surprised, completely, and usually I either did horribly wrong or meet something way beyond my powers; or there was just bad random component/lag...it is extremely rare that I died to a challenge which is well done.
