If there was some "gift" for voting I sure missed it. Hard to believe that some folks are still bringing that up. There are few better examples of the interaction of the KI community and their players than that vote. Exactly like the prompt that brought me  to this thread, as I logged in that day there was an announcement that there was a vote for game of the year, click here! There was no promise of rewards, real or virtual. We ventured over here, registered, voted and paid no more mind to it. Little did any of us know that other games would not do the same. I would have supposed that it would be in their interest to do so. The accusation that bribery was involved is baseless. There is no evidence whatsoever to support it.

Like another poster up thread I was a parent that wanted to check out the game to make sure it was a safe playground. It's kinda part of the job description. Ok, Wizard101? Who is this Ambrose dude anyhow? Needless to say I got hooked. After fumbling around Wizard City and  learning the basics I found I liked the concept of strategy and planning over reaction time and manual dexterity. I perused the forums on KI's home site and while they are ok and they do respond to questions, it really didn't add a whole heckuva lot to my gaming. That all changed when I got stuck in Dragonspyre and on my Zeke quests. I was frustrated and lost in the game. Zeke didn't respond and I didn't know why. The very first hit on Google concerning W101 was Central. I immediately joined and after posting a frustrated rant I wandered around their site. Lo and behold, the locations of all things Zeke! And over here a list of quests and  over there all the gear the bosses drop! Data! Awesome! My first interaction with the community outside the game was to get unstuck. I constantly use the resources provided by other players. Whether it is a guide to a particularly difficult boss or the location of loot or what particular items Deadly Ninja Figs like, my fellow gamers are more than happy to share the knowledge they have gathered.

In the spiral itself the same sort of helpful people are available. It is considered rude to jump in a fight unless you ask first. Even those with chat limited features are aware of this. There is no faster way to get deleted from my list than to port to me in a world in the middle of a fiight and then flee after dragging in another mob. I am not alone in this attitude. KI has stressed the idea of teamwork as well as being respectful of each other. That does not mean that the spiral does not have its share of misbehavior, but it is minimal compared to other darker realms I have visited.

I think what KI does is (or should be) normal behavior for what is really a service related industry. Treat your customers decently, be responsive to their problems and give a good value for the money they spend. It really isn't a hard equation. That other games do not see fit to engage their communtiy (ie, actually give good service) is unfathomable. If I am sitting at a restaurant waiting and waiting at my table to be noticed it is not long before I find another place to spend my dollars. In every instance when I have faced a bug or glitch that affected gameplay they fixed it. The 30k in crowns was completely unexpected but very appreciated. That is typical of how they do things. That other games do not do so or even attempt some sort of interaction with their fan base is  hard for me to wrap my brain around. It just makes good business sense to do so.

My main question is why do players have to pay subscriptions or pay crowns to access all areas of Wizard101 when loot packs make the income?

Many free to play MMOs rely on micro transactions such as loot packs and allow their players to access all areas for free. Aeria Games offers loot wheels similar to hoard packs, yet Eden Eternal allow it's player to access all areas for free.

Guild Wars 2 doesn't even rely on loot packs or subscriptions, just one purchase of the game and players get to enjoy the entire game without any extra charge.

The majority of players which are kids actually have to gamble on loot packs to obtain the necessary gear.

Over one year KingsIsle intruduced dozens of Loot Packs, turning Wizard101 into a gambling money making game.

In reality Loot packs are the main income of Wizard101, so why go the extra mile on overcharging players with subscriptions?

As has been stated already the Hoard packs are not necessary to play the game. Outside of  some of  the wands and a few pieces of gear, dropped or crafted gear is far better. Your opinion that packs are the main source of income for KI is silly. For the first few years they didn't exist. How exactly did they manage to struggle through that part of their business' existence without this "main income"?

You sound like someone who bought a dozen packs and didn't get what they wanted.

You are still upset about the vote?  Lobbying your side to "get out the vote" is part and parcel of every election in any country. Did you expect this vote to occur in a vaccuum devoid of outside influence? All KI did was tell the community there was a vote available. They offered no enticements nor did they pressure us to do so, either of which might be considered unethical. Merely making the voters aware of said vote and directing them to the polling place is common practice in any election or vote. If other gaming developers did not make use of social networking to inform their players of the contest that is their fault and in no way diminishes the vote. If it was all that important (which it is not) then surely other games would have found a way to "get out the vote".
Using a site to get word out about your game? Brilliant! Reach an audience that might not have heard of your product? Why sign me up now!

It is aging? Really? I keep forgetting that this is the internet and the Warhol 15 min goes pretty fast nowadays. Unlike the many domino games that gathered every day  for decades in places like pool halls, bowling alleys, garages, hardware or feed stores this community lives in the virtual world where I can play with friends from across the ocean and the other side of the country. I grew up learning strategy and gamesmanship from my extended family. It continues to be part of what we do as a group when we gather together. The players know each other and look forward to the time together. They study how to improve their game. They experiment with new strategies and adapt to changing rules of the house. I see similar things in W101. My ability to solo a boss is often dependent upon someone else having already been pummeled by them and what not to do. I have often and repeatedly looked to fellow players for help, even if it was to get a tip on how to beat a boss or where that dang monkey, beetle, ufo is located.

Yeah sure it costs to play past Wizard City. In fact unless you want to be a Three Streets Savior for your entire wizarding career I would pony up the bucks to play. Guess what that is how games work. I haven't seen an arcade yet that let you play for free. You can play without spending extra money on crowns for gear. Nobody forces you to buy a hoard pack or a dozen. That is your call. If you want a particular piece of crown gear the odds are that some boss somewhere drops it. I have trashed more crown gear than I have kept and far more than I have bought. Which brings me back to the point of the article. That the game has a community that is involved in and concerned about the game and how it is played and its direction. We have differing opinions but (and thanks to the mods sometimes) we mostly manage to be civil about it.

Four thousand huh? Well, any time you need a few clicks on the page say a few syllables about wizard and we will likely beat a trail here. Oh and thanks for the prize pack,  I just sort of mused on that silly green lizard. Time to bash some monsters!

My favorite pet is the silliest pet in the spiral, the sea dragon. One big triangular tooth, flippers, sort of a pale green and big googly eyes. When I first saw them on test I thought to myself, "There is no way I will be walking around with that goofy looking critter."  One dropped from Astraeus on one of many farming runs and at the time I decided that since I didn't have any other pets to work at the time I might as well see what it had for talents. That was many hatchings and many battles ago. For all the gold I have spent on pet hatching, all the drops, free ones from gifts and three school pets Chelsea, the silly lizard, is still my best and favorite pet.

This is not a simplistic kid's game. If the only experience with it is what is available to free-to-play players then yes I can understand your opinion. Dealing with the upper levels is quite unlike  what happens in Wizard City. There are facets of the game that are very challenging. Unlike having to maintain complete control of an array of buttons I am responsible for multiple tactical card responses to achieve long- term strategy.

In the three years or so that I have played after deciding I should check out this online game that my daughter wanted to play I have found it to be very engaging. I have played other online role playing games, LOTR and WoW in particular, but instead of having to depend on my questionable manual dexterity skills I am asked to think fast rather than react physically. Somenoe with limited physical abilities stands a chance of doing well with this game. I am not under that circumstance but I have known players who were. W101 requires me to think quickly sometimes. It has so many layers of activity that you can avoid some entirely and still find plenty of enjoyment. Many of my fellow player buds are not in the least interested in PVP, I however relish a good duel. Instead of having to depend on my blazing fast thumbs I can spend the few seconds trying to out-think the other player.

I am kinda glad KI got out the vote and posted it on FB. I would have been unlikely to find otherwise.

I actually find this rather amusing. Getting out the vote is cheating? Guess what folks, political campaigns are built upon this idea. If you sit on the sidelines and expect your candidate to win by default because it or they are so "cool" "avant-garde" or whatever other flowery adjectives you might come up with is no way to win an election. You can call it a people's choice or a poll or whatever. If the election has no meaning to you then feel free to avoid it entirely. Unlike this poll the one we had in November has real consequences irl. Your vote matters. if the makers of a game did not see fit to notify its participants that there was an poll that is their problem.

Full disclosure, I did not vote in the poll. I joined up because I wanted to comment on a review of  P101. I am really not ready to invest the time necessary to play the game. I don't have a rooting interest one way or the other. However, seeing people claiming that "people actually registered just to vote" are somehow less entitled to an opinion is laughable. That getting out that vote is unfair or somehow cheating is downright hilarious. And no I don't think the world is worse than it ever was. It has been pretty bad and pretty good all at the same time for longer than we have been walking upright.
