I don't quite remember which would be the best.  Maybe Horizons?  The game crashed and burned, but not due to lack of trying by the community.

Worse was LoTRO.  I can't think of a more elitist, insulting group of people than what I encountered there.  While I don't remember which server it was I do recall that it was in Monster Play.  I don't know if that's an excuse or not, but I gave it several futile days to find out.

Has Turbine released any information regarding their DirectX 11 upgrade for LoTRO?  I'm poking around Google and I'm finding nothing, but perhaps fans of the game know something.

I'm looking forward to the new Aliens vs Predator, and the new Mass Effect 2 is supposed to be an FPS now, too.  Unfortunately those games aren't out yet.  MWF 2 is way too expensive for a PC game, but everyone is wetting themselves over it.

The FPS genre isn't something that I'm seriously into, so nothing else comes to mind.

I came so close to LOL'ing when I clicked through.  Pink pigs definitely were not what I was expecting, and for a very brief moment it was as though MMORPG.com had trolled GE.

With that said, sure, they look alright.  The graphics and music were always the best part of this game IMO.

I get this message after the site (any page on the site) hangs for a large amount of time.  The only way to get past it is to disable javascript, which of course breaks the site.

First, props for linking to Massively.

Second, I received this email too.  Frankly I found it hilarious!  They are essentially saying "resubscribe or else".  I closed the email while laughing and I made a comment to the effect of, "Yeah, that's a great way to bring me back as a customer: threaten me!"

Whatever their actual reasons are, that's the way that the email came across to me.  There's less than zero chance for that to work when I'd already written the game off.

Maybe they're role playing?  "Give us your money or we cut off your...! ..er... delete your newbs!"

This may not be possible for most.  There's a certain newness that other MMOs simply can't recreate.  Especially when they're all made to be so very similar to one another.

EQ was my first graphical MMO, and I played MUDs before then (text based multi-user dungeons).  I was in EQ at launch.

To give you an idea about the newness factor, back then I loved watching promo videos that showed characters sitting around campfires with the game's (still enjoyable) music as the background music.  These days I couldn't give a rat's arse about that sort of thing... who actually does that anyway?

AC was a very good game that I enjoyed at least as much as EQ.  I even tried to get friends to move to AC from EQ, but they wouldn't because of the graphics.

Sure, sounds good.  I too am curious how they would make this feel like a MMO and not just the same'ol game with more players and larger instances, but whatever.  This is now, that is then; in other words we'll have to wait and see how that pans out.  I'm certainly open to the idea.

Some others have said that it was the buggy and unfinished launch that killed it.  That's my opinion as well.  There are some pet peeves that I have such as plopping an animal head onto a human body, but... whatever.

I have no problem with the game's travel time.  Vanguard was to be an open world MMO with flying mounts.  There wouldn't have been  problem, IMO, with earning those mounts.  VG was not supposed to be a game that appeals to the instant gratification crowd in WoW.

The concept was great.  The launch was crash-and-burn.  I still have my VG collector's edition.  I suspect that it's the only SOE box that I still have, and it sure is pretty.

MMOs talk about the grand adventure, but they give you the same day over and over again.  You kill the same things over and over.  Everything stays in the same place, every day is the same as yesterday.  The same guy hands out the same lame quest, to everyone, everyday.  Everybody does the same lame quests.  Time has no meaning, players have no impact.  The MMO genre will continue to stagnate and bore the game community until some developer steps up and makes a changing living world.  One where time moves forward and tomorrow is different than today.

You and me both.

I didn't get to max level, but I found the game to be generally relaxing and casual friendly.  What drove me off was the community, which I found to be very rude (no, I do not remember which server I played on).

The housing in the game is instanced, just like the housing in EQ2.  In fact, the entire town with player housing is instanced, and there are multiple copies of the villages / towns.  This means that you have specific neighbors because houses are "owned" by only one player in your village's instance.

There are several trade skills, but I couldn't tell you if that's similar to the trader class in old SWG.  My time in SWG was spent fighting butterflies and shooting things in general.

"tight lipped on the exciting features"

You play that positive record, DJ! w00t!

OMG Weee~!

  1. Aion - A bot infestation that's passively supported by the developers.  *face palm* That's a recipe of awesome sauce.

Edit:  2008 snuck into my post.  Apparently that MMO year was so bad that it sucked time and space in addition to being just plain awful.

This is going to be an amazing game, no doubt, but between this article and the attention given to Dragon Age Origins, neither of which are anywhere near MMO's, I'm starting to wonder about ole' MMORPG.com.

Consider it bonus coverage. Honestly, having this appear on our site consumed zero resources from our regular operations. So why not?

This isn't intended as an insult so I hope that it doesn't come across that way.

As for "why not", it's a matter of identity.  To use a metaphor, mmorpg.com has become similar to a game that dabbles in many different genres.  A reviewer for such a game may say that there are many good ideas, but the developers were never able to decide on what they wanted to do.  The result is kind of haphazard, maybe a little confusing, and the game tends to lack an identity.

Some games do pull this off quite nicely, and I don't mean to suggest that the extra content here isn't good.  Nonetheless, it does elicit a similar reaction in that mmorpg.com appears to be losing its identity.

EDIT: It's the next day, but I'd like to mention that mmorpg.com is becoming an RPG news site rather than strictly an MMO RPG news site.  That's not necessarily a bad thing.  Diversifying can bring in more readers, but there will be some head-butting on the forums.

It's just a character.  When I used to RP I would take a facet (or two) of my personality and take it to an extreme.  Doing so made it easier to RP the characters' reactions and such.  I really don't bother with RPing these days though, so my characters aren't me but nor are they developed personae.

I hadn't thought of this prior to this post, but characters, for me, have become a tool to interact with the game world; they're a means to an end.  Marionettes at most.

They have not announced it yet but what if the next MMO is a sandbox MMO in the same vein as UO/DF/MO ? What if that is the case? No haters...serious replies welcomed. Would you try it out if that was the case ?

Why not?  I really wouldn't expect Blizzard to make a sandbox, but I'd probably give it a shot.

Here are some reasons just off the top of my head:

  1. The game depends entirely on "kill 10 monsters" and "fetch 20 toe nails".  This is a general MMO failing, but it's incredibly boring nonetheless.
  2. I quickly became tired with every piece of armor having the same appearance as every other suit of armor
    1. Note:  This refers to the physical properties of the armor. The "cover art" changes, but the actual shape is identical (eg, all robes look the same though they may have different colors)
  3. The world looks very stiff (lacks life). It looks like a plastic mold more than a living world.
    1. The Fay area looked the best IMO, but it still looked molded rather than alive.
  4. The characters look kind of like plastic toys
  5. The animations, especially the monk combat animations as I recall, looked like the game was in fact animating plastic toys.
  6. Tons of loading
  7. Animal heads slapped sloppily onto human bodies.
  8. Their combat system looks good on paper, but it is boring and monotonous in execution (both in a group and solo).

...and finally, RMT in addition to a required subscription ensures that I will not even begin to consider it.  If your response is to say that RMT is optional then I won't bother trying to explain why this is a bad thing.  You go right on ahead living with it.

I'd like to be able to use this context menu. Not your "limited" version of it during my posts. I cannot spell check myself in this one. I can see it's wrong but for some odd reason you guys find it better to completely remove my ability to change my mispelt words into the correct spelling. I don't get why you're doing this but it's quite odd.

I'd just like to be able to change my mispellings w/o any hassle.

I agree that there are a number of annoyances about the GUI, but I receive the Firefox context menu in addition to the site's GUI context menu.  This allows me to correct the misspellings.  I take it this doesn't happen for you?

Odd..

You can turn off the fancy GUI by going into your profile options and choosing the BBML editor.  I haven't tried this, but perhaps this will turn off the (I agree) irritating GUI-based pop up.

Even though the card is plugged into the power supply that does not mean that the power supply is pumping out enough juice.  Try unplugging any extra devices, such as external hard drives, USB devices, and so on.  Keep in mind that you do not need the mouse plugged in just to see if the system will use the card, but unplugging the keyboard can in some situations stop the system from loading Windows.

Re-check to see if the card is plugged in 100%.  Sometimes the card can come loose (even just a little) when you plug the monitor into the card.

If you have one monitor that has the ability to plug into both DVI and VGA, then do not have it plugged into both.  There should be only one cord from the monitor that is plugged into the PC, and one cord only (one monitor should not be plugged into both DVI and VGA, nor should one monitor be plugged into both on-board video as well as the video card.  Doing so will definitely cause problems).  The DVI port of the video card is preferred.

Try installing the card into a second computer, if there is another computer in your house.  If the second computer has the same problem then you may need to RMA it (aka return the product for a replacement).

Try a different monitor if you have a second one and/or try a different adapter (that does the same thing) if you need an adapter.

If your motherboard's settings are over clocked then try resetting them back to their default values.

If Windows is seeing an "unknown device" then this may be caused by the BIOS not recognizing the card.  You may need to update your motherboard's BIOS.

Ultimately the card may be bad.  You'll need contact the store from where you purchased the card to ask about replacing the card.
