i watched the cgi trailer on youtube, and it was jaw dropping awesome, gameplay looked good too

then i saw it wasnt a mmo and didnt care. single player and/or small co-op rpgs dont hold my interest at all

Guild Wars is really the only one that comes to mind. If you consider it an MMO...
The game consists of well-designed story-driven quests and it does not take long at all to reach the max level. Once there, you will have many skills at your disposal and the game is all about picking the best spec for the situation.
If you haven't tried it yet, I would highly recommend it.

Sadly Shadowbane fit the bill perfectly, you could hit level cap in a day, easy enough with just a few guildies helping. After that it was all skill based pvp end game content, it's just too bad Ubisoft shut it down.

I would say GW but you are exchanging a grind from PvE or PvP either way.

you should be fine in a month or so. just stay focused on you skills.  dont get missiles if you running a lazer ship and dont skill up armor if your shield tanking
Also, this is a very unforgiving PVP game.  make sure you know were your going and what the security level is before you go there.  Unfortunately the pvp for me was the killer.  beautiful and complex game, just didnt like that others could effect my play time so drastically.

the pvp is the thing that drew my attention

i come from UO, Shadowbane, Neocron, etc

i'm used to no safe zones, no carebears, etc. i like an open range kill or be killed game, so that part is great

im just trying to cope with the slower pace

im shifting away from minning and starting to build a ship for missions/pvp. i have no clue what im doing but who knows, might work, im relying on my extensive star trek knowledge lol.. (yes, i know, that wont help here)

Will I at least be able to make a decent amount of progress daily? I can only put in maybe 4 hours a night cause I work full time, a lot more on weekends.

exploration gives you money?

ok so what skill path (or play style) has the least downtime? i love pvp but i also want to be able to afford whatever i want, or at be reasonably comfortable with a large wallet

Honestly, its fun but..so so so so slow. I mean, I dont mind grinding to make money and such but to get a better ship I have to have Skill X Y or Z and those skills can take days to complete.. In the meantime Im not left with a whole lot to do other than go mine some more or kill some npc pirates ;\

I know everyone says stick with it, stick with it, its worth it but damn, im bored to tears watching my ship mine for a few minutes, warp back to station, sell junk, warp back to asteroid, mine some more, etc

are there any hybrid type setups? i like to be a mixture of crafting/money making and of course, pvp. will i need to focus my entire character on crafting/money making or can i do both?

I really don't think I can handle its slow pace..

I know skills are going to take me forever to level up, is there like anything I can do in between waiting hours/days for a skill to level?

Will my character/ship(s) ever be as good as someone who has been playing from the start? I mean I don't have to be the absolute best but I'd love to be able to hang with the big dogs. If I can't catch up as a new player...why bother?

I'm assuming there are very detailed guides out there on skill paths to take?

It is f2p, if that does not indicate to you that you need to spend big bucks in the item shop to be competitive then you are not familiar with this genre.

Not always, some f2p item malls are fairly balanced, i.e. Runes of Magic, Archlord, etc. Some offer mainly cosmetic items or simply items to level faster/easier but top end gear in a good item mall setting, is only gotten through mobs/kills/dungeons in some games, hence why I asked.

Trust me I'm well versed in F2P economics, not every F2P has to be buy-the-most-to-win type of a game.

UO or Shadowbane. I really love a truly open world of pvp, non-instanced. No quests, no b.s. just pure pvp. Shadowbane might eek out UO a little, cause of the massive battles, the politics, etc When you can run up the crest of a hill and see hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of enemy players just come flooding over top another hill toward you.. Yea nothing else has produced a rush of pvp awesomesauce like Shadowbane since.

Sadly, no mmo thus far has been able to recreate this, too many carebear mmos (yea I play WoW atm, its a time killer for me, I spend most of the time pvping even though theres no risk or reward *sigh*)

i havent really heard of the game but anytime a game adds an open pvp server, i take notice

how open? kill anyone? or still same faction type no-kill rules? full loot or at least random item drop on death?

Passed on the OB, 9 gigs is a bit much when they only offered 1 mirror to dl from for what, the first couple days of OB? (fileplanet queue was always long and the gamershell mirrors were fairly slow).
*shrug* maybe next mmo that comes out i'll give that one a whirl

Sign up for the Star Trek Online Beta.  They are taking applications and very early for that matter.  That may be a good sign that there will be a long beta before Q1 2010.  That means fun.  :-)

Yea I've been waiting for ST:O since 2004 back when Perpetual was steamheading it. I knew it was doomed under them as the years passed on and all we got was the odd screenshot of ingame renders, or an interview here & there. Hopefully Cryptic comes out with something worthwhile, I love science fiction mmos and we are sadly lacking in them in the entire genre.

could someone be kind and give me a key? private message me here or email mavgeek@gmail.com

If you cant handle WoW's grind, you cant handle a grind, PERIOD.

Go play a FPS.

I come from MMO's where I could reach level cap in a matter of days, or in some cases in a matter of a day.

I mean WoW is so focused on grouping, questing, etc I'm used to just going and soloing to max level OR getting in a guild-related power leveling group.

I don't want an FPS. And no I don't want some hybrid FPS/RPG type ordeal like COD4 or Fallout 3 that has RPG-like elements to it. I want a pvp based mmo with little grind that isn't in the list I posted above. Hell for all I know, there may not be one on the market like that atm (DF dont count).

Yea, Eve looks alright BUT I'm not going to devote 2 months time to playing catch up, I prefer somethin pvp based with far less grind..

So I've given WoW a try and it's alright I guess, the grind is a bit much but I do like the polish it has.

I'm looking into something else to play. Sadly all the games I'm looking forward too are a long ways off (ST: TOR, ST:O, SG: W, etc) so I'm seeking a new game.

Something that's P2P, no free games or ones with microtransactions to make your toon better. Something American based, no Japanese or Korean MMO's, something with depth and polish (i.e. nothing like AoC @ launch). And something pvp based.

*NOTE* I've tried Eve, Darkfall, WAR, Eve takes too long & you can't be competitive as someone who started Day 1, Darkfall too expensive to give it a try before buying since it has no demo and WAR, not my cup of tea.

MMO's in general I've played or tried (in no particular order);

Anarchy Online
UO
Shadowbane
Neocron 2
WoW
Eve
DF
WAR
Archlord
Guildwars
Runes of Magic
Dungeon Runners
Hero Online
Flyff
Maple Story

I'm simply looking for a company to take my $15 each month and gimme a decent game to play.

Since theres no demo and before I drop $50

Pentium 4 Duo Core 2.0ghz
4GB DDR2
Mobile Intel(R) Series 4 Chipset yes, crappy intergated card but it has plenty of vram and supports up to pixel shader 4.0 (mentioning cause the wiki entry says you need 2.0 or better)
Windows Vista Home Basic (what i'd give for XP)

really want to play this, i come from UO, Neocron, Shadowbane, etc where pvp was at its finest

kinda vaguely sounds like Dungeon Runners. Some of the instances start at towers and each instance has multiple levels / floors.
