Still the best mmo I've ever played. And I miss it like no other. No other mmo has come close to the fun SB was. Banes that lasted hours upon hours, random ganks in the middle of no where, mass mine taking, hell just goofing off swimming back to newbie island trying not to drown was fun.

I rarely reply to anything on MMORPG.com since the opinions generally differ than my own.

But I had to reply here, in regards to reason 5 of the list, Glee.

I can understand if you dislike the music, aren't into accapella or show choir. But for some of us, even those of us well out of high school, Glee harkens back to a time when life was pure and utter shit. High school was hell for some folks. The socially awkward, the smart kids, the nerdy kids, the fat kids, the ethnic kids, if you weren't on a sports team of the school, a cheerleader or someone who fit into their cliques, you amounted to nothing.

Many kids in that age bracket are tormented, bullied, and more. And yes I do think it makes you a stronger person for surviving it, who knows you may end up that asshole football players boss ten or twenty years after graduating. But that is still not something I think kids should have to go through.

So when I watch Glee, for 45 minutes an episode, I relate to these kids. I understand the shit they deal with every day. I went through that myself. For each episode I myself don't feel awkward or alone or an outcast. I feel normal and realize many others went through the same shit and still do. The music isn't half bad either in my opinion and even though certain aspects of their high school life are hyper-realized versions, others are not and I can relate to them each and every one in at least some minor way. Some more than others.

Even if you hate their music, if you even had a high school experience that even remotely came close to theirs, you too can relate to it. And at the very least they have found friends and family amongst the group. They are not alone, and are stronger as a whole. I only wish I could have had that sense of family as well.

Every 10-12 months I'll ask around about a new mmo, I generally get the same replies but I always ask cause ya never know, there may be a game on the horizon you don't know about.

I'm looking for, preferably, a P2P mmo, heavily focused on PvP. And by heavily, I mean heavily. It needs the following;

- open pvp. completely open. extremely few if not any "safe" zones. kill anyone, anywhere, any time, for any reason.

- Factions or at least some objective for group based combat.

- Game mechanics to support small scale pvp (i.e. 1v1 or big guild vs guild fights).

- Preferably some form of player housing or building creation you can take from other players (i.e. Shadowbane, Darkfall, etc)

- A good variety of race / class combos.. So many mmos these days have only a pitiful small handful of races, or classes in game. Hell put something in there that isn't even related to combat, i.e. pure tradeskill classes, thief classes, etc

- A persistent world. No zones, no instances, just one big ass map that you can traverse on foot / mount.

- a game that is not one of the following - Ultima Online, Shadowbane EMU, SWG, Darkfall, EvE Online, Rappelz, Archlord, Mortal Online, Faces of Mankind, Fallen Earth, League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, Guild Wars 1 (or 2), Anarchy Online, Aion, Allods, Runes of Magic. Most of those I've played at least for X time (not counting Guild Wars 2 which isn't out yet) and while some do offer certain aspects of my list, most only have just that, a few.

Now most likely, there isn't a game that offers my criteria, but it never hurts to ask. As I said, I ask about once every year or so, see if theres a game out there Ive over looked.

That has 3 options;

the Installer for SD
the Installer for HD

and the HD client itself

none of those are really what I need. I want the SD client.. in a non-installer form, I'm not in a position to leave a download running for 6 hours or however long.

Even after a few days since the initital rush, even at 4am in the morning, on a business class cable service, I'm only managing like 400kb/s on a 7GB download.. Sure that will only take about 5 hours but yea, I've downloaded 7 gigs in 30 minutes before, surely there are other mirrors of the SD client somewhere other than the official "installer" or "downloader"?

Shadowbane emu has that same damn click-mouse-to-move system, never felt comfortable with that. WASD=mission impossible?
I'll wait another 6 months or so before subscribing to DF again, who knows maybe by then it's closer to the game they once promised. Right now it just lags content/meaningful PvP.

Click-to-move was required for SB. It's engine, the Arcane Engine, was developed well back in the day, back when MMO's really didn't handle hundreds if not thousands of players in an area. SB was one of the last few real persistent worlds (no zoning, no instancing, etc), and when you had battles as large as 500vs500 which you could on some servers, having each and every character move via WASD is a lot of information for a server to send / receive for every characters movement..

There were insanely large guild fights (banes) that could literally lag an entire server, even if you were on the other side of the world map no where near the actual fight. Imagine what it would have been like if the servers had to constant keep up with input information every millisecond? People forget SB had daily server restarts that could last between 10 minutes to an hour, every single day. Don't get me wrong, I loved SB, best MMO I've ever played but its engine was not the best.

Well after reading this thread on LOTR F2p I decided not to download this game at all.  Thank guys lol.

.

My thoughts exactly. I can do with a cash shop to get levels faster or maybe help do stuff between levels faster but if a big chunk of leveling content is nickled and dimed to you.. thats not a F2P I'd enjoy, and I've spent money on F2P's before too...

It's now well into September 10th.. and theres no way I can find on the official site to create a F2P account. They are probably operating on Pacific time, and with a certain exact launch time for the F2P players, I would expect it at like 7 or 8pm EST tonight ;\ Lame

Its funny to see the haters say Cryptic is doing this as desperation.

Leeta being added was a result of fan REQUEST. There was a large demand on the official forums for her. When we heard they were adding a Dabo mini game, the first thing we asked for was at least a Leeta voice-over for the game, and that spun into a NPC of her being added to. All because of fan demand.

And yes, Season 2's update added a TON of shit. Level cap increased, new ships, tons of new PvE content, more PvP tweaking, new ways to level up (Diplomacy), etc

While the game was lack luster upon release, they are slowly polishing it up very nicely.

Hmmm I been playing mmo's almost 10 years now and never heard of these guys.  Thats odd.

The games they host aren't really very popular except for atlantica, neo steam, and sun. Even then, most people just use the main sites for the games instead of going through their game portal to play on the same exact servers with more hassle.

And Gunbound. Back in the day (say, circa 2004) it was a great competitive online version of Worms. Then ijji bought it and it went downhill. Its still popular but not as great as it once was. Now you have to login to the game from a web interface, that only seems to like IE and not Firefox, Chrome or Opera.

Episode 11 brings us a big pile of community and game news as Cryptic unveils the Refer A Friend feature, with nice prizes. A great engineering report and a mass of noobs unleashed on us. QQ-Continuum - Somehow we manage to land another humorous QQ by RSA favorite Kirkfat again (this guy gets around don’t he?). Old Kirkfat this week asks a hilarious question on the forums “If STO was a car, what kind of car would it be?”. Needless to say, the funny ensued.

Final Contest Update - We’ve gotten a couple entries thus far, we played one on air this episode. So, want a free copy of STO? Send us your entries via audio attachment via email, help Doc get to 45, something! You have until next Sunday, 12pm EST to send us entries before we record Episode 009.

You can get it with a direct MP3 download ( http://www.redshirtarmy.com/podcast/episodes/RedShirtArmy_Episode007_4-11-2010.mp3 )

Tactics & Gameplay - We continue a little bit of last weeks space combat discussion, with some minor information on combating Borg NPC's, and a little more.

QQ-Continuum - A certain forum user this week complains about STO's 100k mark player population, stating how other games like Age of Conan or Warhamer Online are barely surviving with 300k. Needless to say, he didn't quite consider all the facts before making a rant post ;)

Contest Update - Still no entries this week, really. So we expanded the contest some. Since Doc still isn't quite level 45, people that want to help him get to 45, show him some content and fun in game, have a chance of winning the Free Copy of STO. So, we're still accepting emails with audio attachments of favorite STO moments so far as entries or people helping Doc level along in game, either or enters to win!

There was plenty of content added to this patch

- New 5 man raid, The Cure
- 5 man raid Infected was tweaked a good bit and made playable
- Klingons get a big boost in PvE content. They can take some Fleet Actions now, do some exploration missions, more ships available and customization.
- PvP got new content, a new arena which is huge. Oh and Fed vs Fed pvp, which a lot of us have been waiting for.

and on and on and one. check out the patch notes and see all that they have added

Seems this is more of a problem with our community than with cryptic.

This. There have been several threads on the official forums, where for example Person A is having a conversation with Persons B, C, etc in Zone Chat and all the other people disagree or dislike Person A's opinion so they mass report him/her for no valid reason.. So Person A gets punished simply because of it.

The devs know about it and are working on another method of use.
