Developer posted a you tube link to the full version of the Bright September song "Sleepless Lullaby" featured prominently in Issue 7 released last week (and in promo videos).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2aHcANs4GE

Creepy, haunting and beautiful. << spoiler >> the "nannies" in the Nursery facility used the song to calm the mutant children, because a calm, relaxed mutant child isn't a dangerous mutant child. Watch what happens when you turn off the music player looping the song, in-game. The children are no longer there, but the Nannies disapprove!

If you go in thinking cookie cutter MMO like other games (kill 10 boars, loot 5 boar whiskers, ding, grats!) you might be a bit disoriented at first. The leveling and skill system are all integrated in the AP / SP points and you are not limited in what you can buy.

You can buy any skill, and increase the level of all your slots (talismans = 7 gear slots which are head  / 3 majors: ring/neck/wrist ; 3 minors: occult, luck, belt ;;; and two weapons). The higher the amount of SP points you put in Head / Major / Minor, your stats increase, the more SP points you put in weapons, the more effective they are.

AP are ability points and you can buy any and all of the abilities and roll your own skill sets. There are nine weapon types divided in three categories: melee (hammer, sword, fist) ranged (pistols, shotgun, assault rifles) and magic (blood, elemental, chaos). You choose a main hand and off hand from those 9 weapons (only 1 of any, you can't dual wield pistols x 2), and then fill in the abilities from a huge pool that can be weapon specific in the active bar or passive abilities that modify what your actives do -- if you penetrate, this effect happens ; if you critical, that effect happens ; another passive that afflicts (DOT) and then you synergize by looking for something that is triggered by afflictions.

For example, a fist passive "Blood Sport" afflicts the enemy every time you hit it ; you then go look for a matching "synergized" passive that plays off the affliction, something that does xyz to an afflicted target. Sounds complicated but it's very powerful and pretty easy to figure out when you play with your decks and specs (there are sites devoted to synchronizing your abilities to max out your damage (or healing or tanking abilities).

And the freedom from this open ended system can't be over-emphasized. Say you're in a dungeon and your healer drops out -- if you have healing abilities and passives bought and decent items weapons / talismans, you can respec your character on the fly and fill in as the healer. It's also very powerful for soloing because you can redo your abilities if a particular PvE quest monster is giving you troubles, pop in something that self heals you when you penetrate (or hit an afflicted target, see above).

But, my favorite part of all? It's modern world, no elves, no gnomes, no dragons (except the faction which are a chaotic group based in Seoul).

Here's a screenshot of a special pet/t-shirt combo you get if you solve the complex sort-of puzzle in the sixth part of the Issue 7 storyline series. You get the tiny (stationary) blue teddy bear (named "Einstein" see other screenshots I uploaded today) and the teddy bear t-shirt.

Stationary as in when you summon the "pet" he is just spawned on the surface closest to you. It took a while, but I got a screenshot of him sitting on a bench in the London station.

Here's a screenshot of that rascally ninth pet who was hiding in Fusang.

Templar girl is wearing the "Care bear" shirt in memory of all the brave PvE people who ventured into Fusang to get their pet and Lore Item.

(( not really, it's an achievement t-shirt from the sixth part of Issue 7 storyline ))

Good news - the Anniversary event is being extended a week.

http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?p=1611361

They brought the servers down Thursday afternoon for a brief (1-1.5 hour patch) which in turn unjammed Fusang queues and holy crap, there were a bazillion people in there fighting to take down the elusive NINTH guardian and get their pet (100 % drop rate) and Lore Item.

it was a rocky start with the PvP people running amok and going heavy with the AoE which damaged not only the Guardian but anyone in the vicinity, but there were some nice people in the zone giving helpful hints on what to do about the lag and the tactics on taking down the guardian. Forgive me nice person who posted the link in channel with tactics, I forgot your name or I'd give you a shout out for helping the greater good!

Eventually, everyone kind of chilled on the wholesale mow downs and kind of cooperated in taking down the big G -- he's a tougher boss not necessarily in nastiness (he does have a huge radius AOE that will almost 1 shot  you) but in the fact that he has a wicked leech effect! He healed up from about 300k hp to over a million in a few pulses and it took about 10-15 minutes to burn him down with such a stout leech.

The lag was horrible. Open world Guardians, I miss you and forgive you for the 0.7 frames I get at times. That's a vacation compared to the cluster-you-know-what that was going on in Fusang. After the boss died, there was a white knuckle period where you weren't sure if you were going to get credit but after about 5-7 minutes, you get the familiar kaching and phone button and all was good with the universe, again. Again, thanks to the helpful people that suggested remaining in zone until  you were sure you got credit, stating that it might take upward of 20 minutes due to the huge amount of people and lag.

The faction quests given by your handlers are usually different. I've played Dragon and Templar and there was a Dragon quest that sent you to London and had you sneak into an underground Templar area and you had to assault a stronghold area in order to loot a relic sword.

When I got to this mission as my Templar character, it flipped the script and your Templar handlers sent you into the instanced area and you had to assist your faction in rebuffing the attacking (NPC) Dragons and Templars.

The NPC quest givers are decided different and each has their own quirks and some sly, tongue in cheek humor poking fun at the usual movie and television tropes.

Finished Issue 7 on day one of the early access (Tuesday for Subscribers / Lifers) and it was awesome. This is the third home run issue in a row, starting with Issue 5 - Tyler Freeborn, one of the most haunting and actually sad quest series I've ever played in an MMO. It rivaled the WoW opening of the Wrathgate quest in the Lich King expansion (spoiler: the one where the dragon flights came flying in after Arthas and the undead wiped out both the Horde and Alliance armies at the back door to the Lich King's house, and you saw them lazily flying in with the sun as a backdrop and they flew around and torched the place up as Arthas walked back inside) ;;

Issue 6 was a total change a pace, an action adventure takeoff  of the Indian Jones movies, the "Last Train to Cairo" (I still play this quest series every three days and it doesn't seem to get old, I love to run the length of the run-away train, fighting mad cultists trying to get away with an Ark.

Issue 7 returned to the creepiness and underlying sadness of Tyler Freeborn but ramped up the creepiness. The nursery with all the dolls and all types of yucky things was particularly effective and the snow mobile chase through the Carpathian Fangs culminating with the base jump off the bridge was this issues action / adventure that I think it needed to break up the uneasiness you feel from all the horrific images you encounter along the way.

Funcom has taken the MMO genre to the next level with their innovations: sabotage missions (sneak > Rambo), Investigation missions (my brain hurts, this is some tough stuff to figure out) and the modern day setting and homages to Lovecraft, Stephen King and the X-Files. As god is my witness, I'll never kill 10 boars and loot 5 boar whiskers again!

Here are three screenshots taken this afternoon after I played through the 6 part Issue 7 quest and did the 8 side quests, all of which are in the three Transylvania zones...

This is the T-Shirt that you are awarded when you complete the 6 part quest series from Issue 7 -- it's a miniature shot of the cover they used when showing the features from 1.7.

The two shots below are the same girl wearing three of the five pieces from the Orochi Battlegear set you can now buy using the same currency you earned from Issue 6 - Last Train To Cairo, and it's also the reward for doing the various quests released in Issue 7. She's wearing the chest (think white bullet proof armor), pants and boots. You can also get some cool wrap around sunglasses and some leather gloves with the Orochi "O" logo. I'll be getting those as soon as the three day cool down is up from Issue 6 an 7 on Friday!

Hmmm. I've done this on a couple characters, got the achievement for killing all 8.

Is this something they'll reward after the fact like on Tuesday after the patch, or do you have to do something special to claim the title/t-shirt?

Where did you get the "Gaia Rocks" t-shirt?

Another view of the monocle....

Two shots of the glowing green eyes effect you have a chance to loot from any of the three Transylvania Guardians...

Well I am highly impressed how professional some players ("spotters") organized and moderate the #aniversity channel , announcing the bosses, which dimension and who to meet up with.

felt like a military operation with so hundreds of people, finished killing the Golems in New England and Egypt,  doing Transylvania today and tomorrow.

It's really amazing how efficient the guardian killing is through that channel. Even thought it's people doing it, it almost feels too unhuman to be true, as it's so efficient. It almost feels like a work of a bee hive or warrior ants. It definitely shows that there is a power in coordinated numbers.

Doing the guardian achievement is a lot easier thanks to that channel.

You can pretty much start at Kingsmouth, burn through New England, hit Egypt, then hit Transylvania and by the time you get with the eight boss, the cool down (2 hours) on the first Guardian should be nearly expired and you can start it all again, if you're so inclined to do. Just as easy as right clicking on a spotter's name in the #anniversity channel, "Add to Friends", shift + F to bring up friend's list, right click on the new name and "Meet up" option to automatically warp to the correct Dimension and Server where everyone is amassing to gank a Guardian. Rinse. Repeat.

I had extra time to play on Sunday and I was able to do three complete cycles in a semi long play session -- I saved all of the loot bags until the very end so I could go all Christmas Morning on them after a long, hard day. I got one Transylvania pet and the monocle and enough Green & Blue signet bags to fill up my pack (and eventually add to my massive Signet library in one of my character's bank.

As promised, screenshot of the monocle from the Egypt event bosses.

Nice, haven't got mine yet and no Egypt Golem will live until I get one!!!

I did get the third "clothing" item from one of the Transylvania Guardians on Saturday -- it's been so long I forget the actual wording of the item, but it has "eye(s)" "glow" and "green" (or variations, glowing?)  in the name.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a screenshot. I put the item on my Templar character and when I maneuvered the camera around to view exactly what it did, I didn't see anything "green" about the character's eyes. It may be bugged, but it goes in the new head slot section.

Did you know: when everyone is following the large, gold guy Gate Keeper (looks suspiciously like an Academy Award), it's called a Gaia Pride Parade?

Drum roll. Rim shot. Cymbal.

Awesome, now maybe I'll get that pesky 9th Golem who hides away in Fusang! (( along with his Lore item ))

Someone up there mentioned the community coming together, that is an awesome side effect (and I'll bet unexpected by Funcom). A group of hard working players have been maintaining a chat channel that posts real time updates for where the various bosses are spawning.

And since you can kill them every two hours (for the reward, I guess you can kill them constantly if you want to help out), this is a great thing.

The channel also features FAQ, up to the minute strategy info and known issues in the form of a few links regularly posted (so be sure to read these before asking a question. The channel info is below and I'm not sure how long these guys will keep the channel going (I'm hoping through-out the extended one week period so everyone has a chance to get all 9 pets and lore items):

In your chat window, type this:     /chat join #anniversity

Yes, it's supposed to be spelled that way, or it is now, the spelling has grown to have a life of it's own.

Read the links to learn how to reduce lag during the hectic boss battles (command line things you can type), boss info (do NOT afflict the boss in Scorched Desert, or you'll be sorry, and DEAD), boss and lore item locations, abbreviations (do you know what KM, SC, BM, SD, CotSG, BF, SF and/or CF mean? learn them), how to warp to the server/instance where the boss you want to kill is located by befriending someone and using the "meet up" command in the /friend window ; and a whole lot more!!

t-shirt 1. Yay.

:)

I uploaded some screenshots of the First Anniversary T-Shirt (those anniversary shots also feature the July Veteran Gift tactical earpieces and the awesome "Eye patch, black" which drops off any of the 9 event "Gaia Guardians", mine dropped in Blue Mountain about 10 minutes after the servers came back online July 3rd!

Seems the eyepatch only drops from the 3 in Solomon Island; the 2 in Egypt drop a black-rimmed monocle. I'll upload a pic later.

Well, actually, when you help kill one of the guardians (you basically need to hit one once that subsequently dies) you get a mission completion report and a loot bag which could contain:

  • A minipet version of the guardian in question
  • Some fireworks
  • a few Black Bullion (tokens for buying high-end gear)
  • two green rarity signet bags
  • one blue rarity signet bag
  • a piece of cosmetic clothing for the face slot (eyepatch and monocle reported so far)
In my experience the pet is actually a more common drop than the eyepatch / monocle.

OMG! Now I gotta go hit those two again to get a monocle. Top Hat + Monocle and we can all play Mr. Peanut or the Monopoly man.

No telling what goodies will drop from the three Transylvania bosses which should go live Friday the 5th (or the hard to coordinate Fusang boss, locked away behind the PvP queuing system where PvE players may fear to tread, hehe).

Thanks for the heads up.

BTW: If anyone wants to expedite hitting 3 or 5 or 8 of the world bosses, they should /chat join #anniversity   (spelled that way) when they log on. The player volunteer channel sends out scouts to find guardian / boss spawns, alerts everyone on which servers they are popping and make it easier for you to /friend someone in the channel and use the pop up menu on /friend list to warp to their server. Be sure to read the _links_ the moderators post in the channel for boss / lore item LOC, special instructions (do NOT use affliction on the Scorched Desert boss!!!) as well as known issues, and some work-arounds (for lag, use "/setoption SpellEffect_DisplayLevel 4" no quotes to tone down the effects and increase fps or put a "0" instead of "4" in that command to turn them back on).

Some may not know, but this item was voted on by the players on the Secret World forums and the earpiece was what the majority requested. Funcom being awesome gave the people what they asked for (even though I voted for the eye patch, arrrrgh no pirate for me, matey).

The above screenshot shows the smaller tactical earpiece (right ear) mentioned in the original message.

The above screenshot shows the larger earpiece (left ear).

Both pictures show the Dragon Lady wearing the just-released July 3rd First Anniversary T-Shirt (be sure to log into your account and claim this item between July 3rd and July 8th) and the awesome "Eye patch, black" a loot drop off anniversary event world bosses "Gaia Guardians" -- one zone boss in each of the 8 zones and the 9th in the Fusang PvP zone, New England zone bosses in Kingsmouth / Savage Coast / Blue Mountain can drop the eye patch!

Edited: to reflect heads up elsewhere that alerted me to the fact that the two Egypt bosses can drop a "Monocle" and I'm assuming the three Transylvania bosses will drop something entirely different (crosses fingers for a Russian fur hat!)

After I went cold turkey and left World of Warcraft a year ago, and dalliances with the Old Republic, Tera, and then Cryptic turned Star Trek Online all money-grab-mindless-grind-y (I left that game in November with the release of Season 7, 3 months short of my third anniversary), all that was left for me is Secret World. That is where I am, currently.
