I just find it sad thats all,sad that the game we all loved is gone and wont come back

And given the fact SOE hasnt released an MMO since the NGE  the point you make is moot granted they've presided over the turkeys of POBS and VG but the defence there is they didnt make them

because Smedley and Company mismanaged it into the ground. They continually made promises they never kept, never fixed what was wrong, and never added the "toys" that the "sandbox with toys" was supposed to have.

That made people who were originally very enthusiastic for the game grow to be disillusioned. Slow atrophy set in, and when WoW came on the scene, many more left.

Then, to cover up his own failure, Smedley blamed Koster for his design, and we got the CU. That failed, which led to his second blame-shift, WoW. They attempted to copy WoW with the NGE, but tried to do so on the cheap, and in too short a time; the unethical nature of the act (using current subscribers money to pay for the destruction of their game) combined with doing such a shabby job of it led to a massive hemmorage of customers.

Now, over two years later, they are almost DONE with what they should have had finished by November 15, if they were going to do a thing like the NGE, and it has failed miserably.

Now, I know I have explained this in many threads you have posted in before (perhaps in this thread even, I forget since I have explained it so many times), and others have as well; so I wonder, why ask this question, which has been answered many times and in many similar ways, again?

Either way, there's your answer once again. Pretty simple really, if you remember the course of the game's history.

To sum up and repeat:

Star Wars Galaxies was delivered as a broken sandbox, with the sand spilling out. It was meant to be a sandbox with toys. The toys never arrived.

Smedley needed to cover up for that failure. He did so by shifting blame, first to Koster, then to WoW, and now, to the hidden Cabal of angry customers. He's a gamer of a sort, and that is the game he plays, which sadly, he plays fairly well.

I simply ask the question again Fishermage becuase all this forum does is go round in circles, the same old bring back pre-cu/nge sucks threads and of course a good bit of SOE bashing (not that its not hard to do the last one i grant you).

But here we are almost 3 years on and whats changed? nothing much tbh..guessed at sub numbers,a very broken game (still) and the little red headed man still in charge of SOE..nor do i see sony filing for bankrupcy becuase of the angry vets so everything is as it was back the day the NGE hit

RE number three..for my wife who'd never played an MMO tried it out on my account and frankly couldnt get her head round it,much later she tried WOW and bingo she played it solid for 2 years till she moved to EQ2

In my mind the game was not "casual freindly" in anyway shape or form, now for me and others i'm sure thats what made the game, you had to go looking for stuff and sometimes get your arse kicked doing it,but for the new people to the gaming genre they need some sort of direction.

In this regard the game utterly failed.

Yep, SWG was originally released far too early.

But so was the NGE.

The only difference is "potential" was a word thrown around quite a bit in those early days.

If the NGE came out today it would still have been too early

For the next month AoC will effect ALL MMOs out there atm..time will be when people start to have to pay for it monthly to see any lasting effects.

I played the old girl far too much back in the day (as most people here did ) but there must have been something in the game that did'nt attract the "mainstream" of gamers that flooded into the genre with the coming of WOW.

And thats really what i'm asking..why didnt the game live up to its expectations?

In the interest of balance i ask this

Why hasnt/didnt SWG get the mythical WOW sub numbers?

This isnt a troll post either but c'mon lets have a little discussion on why if as you all claim koster and co where so far ahead of the game did the game go tits up?

And lets not have an SOE bashing here,we all know what they're like so i ask again why didnt the game hit the number it should have? (and i'll say it again it should still be the number 1 MMO on the market even now)

Ahh the fun factor something that was,for me as well was missing in ROK i dont see the point of doing the same boring quests for faction killing the same bird/rhino/cat endless times that much fun

I'm all for bringing and welcoming new plaers into the game but not to the point where as someone else put it one newbie area renders the rest of the games newb areas worthless, its this misguided direction can be reversed then theres time yet for EQ2 make a come back worthy of elvis in '68 :)

I do get the feeling that AOC may well be the new killer app in the MMO genre but only if you have a good enough pc to run it well (i do but dont like the conan lore tbh)

It amazes me to see how SWG vets always seek each other out in other games. It speaks to me of the great community and the incredible experience we shared.

29 pages of vets posting in one game forum that hasn't even gone live yet. It really makes you wonder how many vets are out there waiting.

You nailed it with this post,no game i've played had the community that SWG had,if only we had the game we truely deserved not what they served up to us both pre-cu and all that came after it.

For me at least i played SWG becuase of the people i played with not for the game (though it was ok),now as for AOC its not a game for me but if some people find a new home than that has to be good news.

Guildhalls have been promised  as long as i've played the game so i'm not holding my breath for them yet tbh.

somewhere they stated that they actively started working on guild halls sometime last year and if you read dev statements then you see the topic beeing raised multiple times in last time. (like here )

I personally would think they would be much more silent about that topic if it won't be finished this summer.

edit: sorry did not want to derail the topic

It was at the fan faire IIRC and theres no ETA on them, but the main hope is Bruce the producer he is doing thins more and  more to my my liking tbh,but all Rothgar was talking about was the change in size of the boxes for flight travel i dont expect to see them any time soon but we'll see.

And as for the topic well some people will go to AOC some will stay thats thier choice it just doesnt interest me at all,the story i mean plus i'm not an FPS fan so using the WASD keys wont go down with my ham fisted fingers.

Far and away for me its the worst expansion by far for the following reasons..

The mindless questathon to get to 80,its boring theres no variety to it and people wont group up to get there faster as it seems to impact on your already poor ammount of xp kill.

The shared dungeons are poor when you compare them to say SOS,HoF,MMC and frankly once you've done them there no real reason to go back other than to do yet more of the boring quests.

TD has unhinged the game with its massively overpowered armour, enough said on that one.

The land mass looks nice at first but sadly for me its shabbily coded,i'm sick and tired of seeing mobs come out from rocks and under the floor, this was happening in beta and its still there.

I'll say it again EoF was a near perfect expansion,so what did the devs do..follow its template and build on it? no they seemed to have played LOTR and tried to impliment it into EQ2 and its fails because of this,i hope that Bruce and the devs come up with something as good as EoF for novemeber and dont follow the ROK route, the games engine doesnt shine with huge areas and for most people the lag when it was busy was a horror show.

EQ2 as i've said many times on here is still the best MMO out there but the fact that its had a poor expansion in my and more and more peoples view means the devs cant afford another slip up with the next one,i dont want another questwhoring grindathon killing the same mob for 4 different factions.

Guildhalls have been promised  as long as i've played the game so i'm not holding my breath for them yet tbh.

Theres a lot of stuff in AOC that does remind me of EQ2 and even VG at launch,it'll be interesting to see how long funcom holds out before they go the way of the MMO genre in general and chase the "casual" gamer becuase as it looks at the moment its probably the most "hardcore" type MMO on the market.

Theres no doubt new stuff coming the the next few LU's to EQ2 (i do get the feeling this "plague" quest in this update is the start of the run up to the expansion) but mostly it'll be tinkering with whats already in the game, now for me and a lot of other people thats enough to be going on with and i'm sure if they dont repeat the mistakes of ROK and make it an expansion that has something for all playstyles then the server numbers will be on the rise again.
