DEATH penalty! Yes, I'm for it, but I want to keep playing too.
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 1/20/10 10:56:47 PM
Meridian 59 had a decent system where death did cost you. Not to the point that you'd just give up, but serious none the less. It left open the ability to search out a place to overcome the sickness (from either and NPC or player death), but left open the PK possibility. That worked because 1/3 the population made their bones on PKr killing, since you could get "out of the world" exp. for killing those tagged PKrs. PVE doesn't really mean much anymore....in the olden days (and I date myself here) the worst thing out there was more than the worst demi-boss, and that was the girl (or guy) at some other keyboard 100's or 1000's of miles away. At the same time, if you chose to go that way (anyone remember Qor?), and pk then you had HUGE penalties to overcome, or obtaining magic to counter those penalties. Revenants anyone? ...additionally, with faction (duke or princess), the whole PK thing could be either a boon or bane....but none of that exists anymore. The step away from major penalties has degraded MMORPG's for quite some time. EQ started the degradation and, though I love that title to this day, There was no better system than M59, when you paid for your choices no matter what. One thing I always found interesting was that in M59 you could have genuine emotions in the game , on which you acted on your own, that determined where you'd be in that world for the next 2 or 3 months, regardless of guild standing. ...it made you think for somewhat longer than a mouse click. I never sign my posts, but anyone reading who remembers "Vicki" from 105....well, they'll probably understand. ....death (and killing) should actually mean something... |

Fair writeup, but it seems like you got really bored a LOT faster than what was implied. The game isn't really as tedious as you make it out to be.... ...for example, you can always get waypoints to quests and setting your return point gets you back to your strategic start location in a jiff.... The game is really pretty easy to get around in right off the bat. The PvP scheme is broken in many MANY ways, IMO, but even as a casual player, and mostly solo at that, the learning curve, at least for me, wasn't steep...

Continued negative posting on a game that you aren't going to play and aren't going to contribute to in terms of its community is the issue. I would say the same thing for myself or anyone else if we were trolling a different game that we had no intentions of playing on release. It obviously isn't down your alley, so please don't try to alter everyone's experiences that actually want to play. Guess I'm not sure why negativity is frowned upon. Fact is this is a bolts to apples comparison anyway, and YOU simply don't like that anyone is dissing your game of the day. WOW will laugh all the way to the bank, as usual, and this thread will die again, as usual, when the hype fails to live up to the expectation. It's great to be excited, but flies are excited by fresh turds.....does that make random public excitement forum fodder? ....everyone has the next "WOW killer"...neat! Bring it to market after the fanboi threads! |

You know, this is one of the reasons why I stopped playing MMOs almost all together.....these games and you ppl are so one-dimensional. >>
Umm...? I'd probably punt the attitude and just discard the opinion if it didn't pique my interest. The response was honest, and probably accurate, to some extent. I hear you as the comic book guy in the Simpsons...nice work! |

I could actually see this kind of MMO title out there. It'd be F2P if (monthly) you gave up rights to your 10 second misogynistic rant to some stolen sample, otherwise it costs 5 rocks worth of fake coinstar "visa" per quarter. Also, there'd be a short IQ quiz that would require a score somehwere below 90 in order to qualify for the perpetual paid beta. NEATO!

...gotta agree with ^ .... The horrible thing about this is that I already KNEW what the replies would be, but I opened the thread anyway. LOL!
...damn, I sure wish there were actually people here who played this game when it was first out. I can't even tell you how I cringe when people talk about UO or EQ as the "first MMORPG" games available... |

What Do You Think Should Hold The Title, "Best MMORPG"?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/30/09 11:25:03 PM
Best PVP: Meridian 59 (which for some reason all but one person here actually remembers, but it predates UO and EQ) which BTW Mortal Online is copying the flagging concept from M59, which is quite cool, IMO. Best PVE: EQ ...hands down |

What game was the king of MMORPG's before WoW?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/22/09 9:57:28 PM
Seriously, only ONE person vaguely remembers Meridian 59? Man...I'm old, and apparently daft as well....
M59 predates EQ by almost 2 years, and to date, imo, still had the best pvp scheme.... |

Everyone early on said EQ, which of course was a world beater right off the bat. It forged a new path in the online gaming world, and was the standard to beat in the "mainstream" mmorpg world.
...still, maybe not many remember it, but Meridian 59 broke the ground for a pay to play mmorpg and to this day I still think that world had the best pvp ever. The schools of magic there have never been beaten. yeah Qor may have been overweighted somewhat, but anyone who ever mastered it would have made a strong argument that the process surely justified the power.
and the power shifts were nicely done long before such concepts were fronted in the mainstream games.
does ANYONE here remember M59? |
|

Honestly, gotta go with the poster above. I have, for some stupid reason, tried time and again to find anything better than Newegg, and they've never been beat yet in my experience. |

Your first MMORPG influences your tastes forever?

The graphics in it suck by today's standards, even the worst of the new games blow the M59 engine away, but I can't say I ever had as much fun or staying power in any other game. EQ was close, though. |

really??
...well, it's the methodology of the "anti cheat" program that's called into question. That and the fact that it doesn't go away upon uninstall. Methodology aside, if the thing wiped itself completely upon uninstall, I'd probably be a little more accepting of it IF I felt like that was an appropriate solution as an anti cheat method. |

So they, along with many other companies, are cutting jobs. Welcome to the current economy. Do you want a medal for your prediction? How about this, why not go play the game you enjoy, we will play ours, and everyone can be happy without going around and trying to inflate their e-peens? Cheers!
Now THAT...is one hell of a novel concept! |

That would have been back in 77-78 when we had programming in jr. high. The machines were teletype, but we had the acoustic couplers going so we could have a rudimentary network, or we could play off of the school's big ass mainframe that took up just about an entire room.... ...anyway, the game was Star Trek, and you loaded it off of ticker tape. Basically it was along the lines of a text based MUD with a roll per action. Kinda weak by standards even from the '80's , but at the time it seemed like groundbreaking stuff. The class was 45 minutes long but by the time you got the tape loaded (and the couplers if you wanted to go head to head) you had about 7 minutes to play... It was worth it though...
