EA because of Earth and Beyond.

SOE because of SWG/NGE.

Though I may still resub to CoX every now and again, after the failed launch of Auto Assault after a nifty beta - what I have seen of Champions Online and Star Trek Online - I will be passing on anything new from Cryptic/NCSoft/Atari.

CCP...CCP.  This is a tough one, because for the most part I like Eve Online.  Though it is the only game I have ever done the nerdrage quit of deleting everything after four years.  I simply could not deal with their obtuse explanations on certain areas of the game and the overall lack of in-game ethics from the GMs.  It is one thing to screw up a game technically and another to do what they have done over the years.  I dread thinking of them involved in the WoD IP.

I have to agree with what was said about Turbine and DDO.  It was supposed to be the old rpger's wet dream come true.  It became a combination of erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation.

Blizzard is a curious one as well, mainly having to do with WoW.  From beta and the jokes about the Fisher-Price graphics, they have continually taken old ideas from older games - dumbed them down - and called it innovation.  One need only look at Cataclysm to see their decade old ideas about innovation.

Though I have no experience with the AoC launch, I still play Anarchy Online from FunCom.  Yes, it is a grindfest - but it makes no claims to the contrary, thus there is no peeling away the thinly veiled lie to find the truth as you will with so many other games.

It is funny, of all the games I miss the most - I miss Shadowbane.

edit:  Yeah, I hated what Microsoft did to FASA/Battletech/Mechwarrior.

Risk.  If a game lacks any risk, then you might as well be playing Bejeweled.

Eve Online has risk.
Even CoX has risk.
Anarchy Online has risk.
Shadowbane had risk.

If failure carries some risk, then the game might start to be considered hardcore depending on that risk.

In WoW, there is no risk involved with failure.  It is a casual time sink.

You have a Doctor, a Lawyer, and an Accountant.  Their balance should be at the end of the day being able to make money.  The Lawyer should not be doing your heart surgery and your Doctor should not be doing your taxes.

You have a Tank and a Jet.

There are so many examples where if you look at an overall end goal, given certain circumstances different items/people are the best for the job.  Thus, you have balance.

But in mmorpgs, everybody cries that they want to be able to do everything because they rolled something and they feel really special about what they rolled.  Tough.

You want to balance solo content, then go with something simple:

Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, Mage are the base four.

Fighter (tank) - can take damage, but does less damage - spends more time sitting to heal.

Rogue (dps) - spends more time setting up the damage and spends time sitting to heal.

Cleric (heals) - does little damage but spends less downtime healing.

Mage (dps/control) - big damage but big downtime.

When all is said and done, they will progress through the content at the same speed based on the balance of the classes ability to do damage, take damage, and heal damage.

Add in varieties of these classes, where they perhaps take more damage but do more damage - etc, it will all balance.

There should be no artifical balancing done for PVP.  That will come down to teamwork and player aptitude.  If that means one class is always losing to another class in PVP, oh well... stop dueling.  Too many games have catered to the constant swing of the nerfbat over this silliness.  It is annoying.

STO has been dumbed down more than any other IP out there.  When the game was first announced and as it progressed, it looked sweet.  Now it looks like a gimp console game.  It will suffer even more from this than CO did, because at least with CO they stopped short of it being a nickel and dime console game.

A successful launch does not mean anything.  Many games have had good launches and choked.  Many games have had oopsie launches and are still running eight or more years later.  It is what the company can deliver on despite of a good or a bad launch.

Bring back attunement and raid progression.

Remove PVP gear outside of Arena/Battlegrounds. You play at a certain rank in Arena, you were a uniform of appropriate level. You fight in a Battleground, you wear the uniform of the side you are fighting for.

Forget trying to balance PVP around classes and realize that it needs to be done based on a 3v3 comp. If you want to go outside that tank/dps/heal comp - that is on you, have fun.

Things like this will never happen in WoW as it caters to crybabies that are happy with their Fisher-Price World of Bejeweled.

It could be an awesome game instead of just being a casual time sink.

Cryptic has a history of different "bonuses" and "perks" depending on who you did your pre-order with in the past.  It should not really come as a surprise that they would do something like this.

I have not enjoyed PvP in a game since Shadowbane.

Somebody needs to do RIFTS already.

It is one thing to have the bewbies, cause the guys love the bewbies - but then things like that are just wrong.

You've lost me. Things like what? Big bewbies beneath big heads?

It is not a big head - it is a young head - what appears to be an underage head.

I will of course try out the new races, but i don't see them at the moment being anything more than another alt to mess with. The one thing that did peak my interest (my sad geek side seeping through) was the chance to finally play a Human Hunter, it is the one race/class combo i could never understand being in the original game to be honest. The human starting area is a perfect hunter environment and i never fealt comfortable with NE or Dwarf hunters for some reason, so that one is a definate for me.

I think part of this comes into play with the use of Hunter instead of Ranger.  I believe part of the original discussion on why there were no Human Hunters involved the animals lack of trust of people (as far as the pet bit).  This is a topic that is covered quite a bit in fantasy, in regards to Human Rangers being rare compared to Elven Rangers and the like.  On the other hand, Elves and forest critters and Dwarves and mountain critters has been rather commonplace.

It will be interesting to see how many people end up rolling an old race new class combination compared to a new race as they experience the new old content.

I wonder about the ability for there to be a story driven mmorpg.  After all, if the story at a given point is about Bob the Mob - and somebody has already whacked Bob - if you are going to whack Bob too, how is this not an instanced single player game in a large 3D chatroom?

Yes, Bob the Mob is a simplified example of a greater issue.  Say that it is indeed quite a bit of interaction with NPCs and the like, still - if somebody has done it before... you know?

I would like there to be a game where you interact with the story, instead of just being one of many people doing the same story at the same time.  Say there is an issue going on in regards to some threat, instead of it being the players that directly affect that issues (countless players doing the same thing and it having no meaning in the game) that they do something that affects it - and that the collaborative work of all the players moves the story along.  Something along the lines of how the Dark Portal was done in WoW, but not quite dumbed down like that.  Yet along those lines, as the players do enough quests for a certain story arc - it progresses.

Of course, this means there would not be "repeatable" content - so the onus would be on the developers to be able to deliver on more and more stories for the players new and old.

It will not happen though, and we will be stuck with what we have...

First a thank you to coffee for the info on the Goblins.  Things like that have always left me wondering about there only being two playable factions and how some of the decisions have been made in regards to which race is on which side.

In regards to what Jason said, that has always been the curious thing about WoW since the start - since as a whole, the Alliance and Horde are not at war.  There are factions within the Alliance and the Horde at war with each other, but as a whole - the big guys on each side have teamed up against greater threats.

Then again, that just ties in with the thoughts on wondering about why it has always just been two playable factions (even though it started with the whole Warcraft Humans and Orcs thing).

During my time in WoW, I went back and forth with CoX and EVE.  Heck, I even did Auto Assault until they ruined it by releasing it as they did; which led to them having to shut it down.  I played a bunch of games before WoW.  In having given up on EVE (only game where I ended up deleting everything and swearing never to return(even after four years)), I found myself back at CoX - but it has only gotten worse over the years in being the same thing it was so long ago.  I am actually taking a look at Anarchy Online once more.  Too many of the new games are just the old games with different graphics.  If Blizzard ever does anything new with WoW, I might return.

You will probably find yourself joining the swell of beta testers that go from game to game suffering endless disappointment.

It is kind of funny, considering that post that was talking about the average gamer being depressed - more realistic would have been to say that the average gamer is depressed about the nature of the games.

While there may not be anything on TV, there is always an outside out there...somewhere, or so the rumors go.

Have they said what will happen to the neutral Goblin cities?

Figure with them redoing other content, the Worgen quests are gone or tweaked or whatev.

As it stands, there is little reason to resub for this xpac.  It almost reads more like a patch.

So how old do you think that female on the right side there for Dragonica is...?

It is one thing to have the bewbies, cause the guys love the bewbies - but then things like that are just wrong.

There are already too many classes.

They should have just gone with the base four classes, and then gone with talent trees from their for specialization into different "classes" and "roles" instead.

Basically they have said it will not be Diablo, StarCraft, nor WoW2.  They have said they are not picking up any of the IPs floating around out there.  So, it could be anything - it could be nothing - and it will be years until we see anything.

  22. Large scale environments with realistic travel times.
  23. Hirelings.
  24. Veteran reward micro-transactions.  No RMT.
  25. Player created missions (one shot contracts).
  26. Seasonal effects.
  27. Customizable animations.
  28. No artificial constraints on group size.
  29. No instancing outside of random missions.
  30. The hardware to handle all of this and more.

This is where some elaboration would be nice.  In regards to how the DUST folks get to the planet.  With folks camping gates and patrolling 23/7, unless CCP plans on having the DUST folks sitting around doing nothing - then there will probably be some juryrigged loophole to allow folks on your planets (since CCP is fond of those loopholes that go against their own mechanics).
