The biggest reason this disenchantment is happening is because MMOs are trying to be single player games instead of the virtual worlds they used to be. If you had played the MMOs that got all this started you'd see. It was a lot different and better back then (for it's time). No not everything was perfect, but the basline for MMO development was much better. WoW has pretty much cemented in a new model, but I have a feeling it will be changing back to more open world type MMOs...eventually. lol

I have to agree. PVP zones or arena have no place in a future MMO. It's part of the same old crap that is proven ineffective to the pvp community.

The DAoC model used in ESO for PvP is one well loved and reminisced by many hard core PvP fan. Myself included. They could not have picked a better PvP model IMO. Open world PvP everywhere mostly leads to two things. Players picking on low level chars and camping quest hubs. Or PvP groups spread out so thin you dont get much PvP action. All PvP focused on one big map means more large scale battles and removes the griefers.

DAoC is not hardcore pvp. Darkfall is hardcore pvp. Faction based PvP is pretty boring IMO. If there's no risk what's the point?

WoW has had pvp zones. Was a pretty sucky concept TBH.

=/ So you can steal from merchants right in front of them and nothing happens. Awesome.

I have a feeling ESO will be another flop game because it's focusing way too much on combat. Cookie cutter wow clone yet again.

It would be so cool if they're pulling it to build a sandbox game. Now hopefully they've learned their lesson from the D3 atrocity and will make the game complicated enough to actually warrant more than a few months worth of play before I'm bored.
Wait.. it's text based? Damn that kind of interface even predates my MMO experience. lol

I would also recommend giving Vanguard a shot if you haven't already.

It has a big open world, and although I couldn't get into it, I would suggest checking it out, it is free-to-play now, after all.

Vanguard is definitely a good game to try. It has some really great gameplay. The only issue IMO are the low population levels compared to a new release title (that was released correctly lol).

Also I actually created a wiki for Vanguard detailing where to find all the dungeons, and began to catalog the various dungeons I found. It's half finished, but still nice to see how many dungeons are actually in the game and exactly where to find them. ;)

If you haven't tried EVE you could try that. It has a lot of different things you can do. It's quite a slow game though, so watching youtube videos while you do anything other than pvp is probably a good idea. lol I used to do college homework while I was mining way back in the day.

I have been playing Vanguard for the last 4 months or so, but I cant get my wife to play it so I will probably look for a new game we can play together((if anyone knows of a good mmo that is not lotro i would be willing to check it out)). My wife and I have both been playing civilization 5 over the weekend she stayed up until six in the morning playing lol.

If you guys are liking Civ 5, try out Forge of Empires. It's kind of a civ 5 like game with research etc, but it's online multiplayer. It's definitely not as polished, but at least you can play together... I think. lol I haven't really done a lot in the game yet.

I recently tried playing LOTRO again, but there's just not enough depth for me. It's too much like WoW. I've also thought about going back to EVE, but everything other than PvP is so dull and slow. Hell I was thinking about trying a player run UO server last night. lol That's how desperate I am to find another great MMO with good combat, pvp, economy and crafting, etc.

It's a step in the right direction, just not sure if we need to go that far to actually effect the world..  IMO, I think original EQ was great as it was set up.. There were camps that required for the most  part groups, while allowing soloing in the general open areas.. Granted this wasn't perfect, especially how some classes were more group focused then others.  To this day I think SOE handled EQ wrong in making it more solo friendly and balanced..  I do miss zone wide roaming mobs, and zone wide social agro.. When you have Dragons or Giants, or whoever traveling about the zone looking for a fight, that turns the zone into one big event.. Sure things could get ugly, but oh well, isn't that part of playing a game..  I miss, "SG to the docks".. lol  and anyone else miss mobs that summoned whoever was on their agro list?  So finally.. not sure we need a virtual world, but I do believe the zones within this world need far more options, and surprise..  I haven't been surprised by game mechanic in 10 years..

I loved EQ as well, but it was not a virtual world. It was the first themepark albeit without quests. You could literally change nothing in the EQ world. It was pre-fab.

The kind of world I would love to play in would be one that even if no players were logged in the world would change and go about it's business. The world wouldn't need players at all. Players would just take up roles in this world. Players would also not be able to 'ruin' the experience for others because there would be consequences in this world just like the real world. Also there would be 1 character per server, so people would have to pick 1 path to take, adventurer or blacksmith for example.

Anyway I could go on and on, but the kind of game I want to play probably wouldn't appeal to 95% of gamers today, so would never be made. Most likely because my game wouldn't have enough instant gratification. lol Actually it would have almost none.

UO was already out there. My understanding is this version is a reiteration of what the game used to be.So why make it ?

Judging by what has been released about the game thus far, it is nothing like Ultima Online. Another key point to your post is "game used to be", EA Games ruined UO with Trammel, and every expansion following. They added item insurance, neon weapons, stupid "classes" etc. I don't think anyone who played UO in the early days would even touch the newer versions of UO, I know I sure wouldn't.

UO ruined by Trammel? please Trammel was an awsome idea, the only people hated Trammel where the people who hovered on the fringes attacking people who wanted to play the game.   PVP was so bad in this game, it stunk.

The only thing that ruined UO, is Time and EA,  I guess they believed that UO would just last for ever. so they shit canned UO2.

Maybe it was leading edge, and too much for the hardware, but they would be soo much further ahead if they hadnt killed it.

I hated trammel, and I was not a pvper. I was a miner, blacksmith guy who had a smith shop.

Trammel was the first part of what killed UO. They shouldn't have created it, and instead put in a system to curb the ever growing gank problem. But still if you were smart you could get away from PKs almost every time. All you had to do was hotkey recall, and have a rune ready to target. It was pretty easy.

Until the technology improves I consider any pad to be a waste of money for a gamer, especially since you can get a nice laptop for about the same money.  Pads are good for kids under 12 and that is about it.  My 11 year old grandson already wants a laptop for his next birthday so he can play real games.

Just don't get the excitement over mobile games myself.

Agree I don't get it. I'm a database admin, so definitely tech savvy, and TBH I still don't get the appeal of tablets at all. The only time I could see myself wanting to use one is in front of the TV, but usually I'm watching something and can't really be looking down to play a half-assed game every few seconds. If I can whatever I'm watching is not interesting enough, and at that point neither is the game.

I guess I'm one of those rare people who actually want TV and games to require my attention.

Just to let people know Eldevin is almost nothing like Ultima Online. It's more like wow. Quests, leveling, no world pvp, when you die you don't drop your gear, pvp in battlegrounds, it's item centric, etc...

But this will soon change.  I expect this year for there to be one or two AAA quality PVE sandbox games released, and when this happens, this will be very, very big.

Which two ?

EQ Next in 2013, I'm guessing Fall, and "maybe" Arche Age this year, unless I am mistaken.

What? Isn't ESO releasing this year?

Isn't ESO going to be a themepark?

Agree the problem is publishers aren't willing to try something new. They leave that to indie companies who usually screw it up.

Secondly I'm tired of games that try to only have 1 style of play. They get boring fast. But that's probably the only game that will be coming out for... well I don't see an end to it any time soon. EVE is probably the closest game to what I'm talking about that is still pretty active. Lots of different things to do in that game. UO was the same. If you give people different types of gameplay to work on while they're bored of PvE or whatever then they'll stick around longer.

I am and I'm not. I wish they had made it because I loved UO, and there hasn't been many games like it since. I'm not too sad they didn't because it probably would have been horribly bad in some way or another. lol (ever the cynic)

The only pain I'm feeling is it seems good open world sandboxes are becoming more and more rare. And yes they're turning into massively singleplayer online facebook games.

That is not pain. To me, most MMOs don't even need a open world.

Pain is subjective.

Permadeath PVP would only work if there was a hefty consequence. If there's a huge consequence it keeps away griefers.
