As long as games continue to migrate towards totally soloable content yes the communities that we used to know and love are a thing of the past. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with solo content within a MMO but when you design your game so you can solo to max level without having any reason to speak to another player once, you've destroyed any chance of any community growth. Other players become more of a nuisance than a boon as grouping usually just slows down your leveling progress. If you can go to an Auction House and buy anything you want why ask a crafter to make you something? If you can fast travel anywhere why take the time to talk to people and get to know them along the way?

The only communities within MMOs these days are within guilds. These are very closed communities and the open comunities that games like EQ, SWG, DAOC, UO and many other games of yesterday fostered are gone forever never to return. I think SWG pre NGE was the last game that a total stranger just stop to chat with me and we ended up becoming pretty good in-game friends. That kinda thing used to happen on a daily basis in older games but now it's very rare. In EQ I would meet new people almost every time I logged in. Now people are so busy, wrapped up in doing their own thing that when you try to talk to them they act like, "Why the hell are you bothing me?". It's pretty sad actually because most players that started with WoW have no idea how much fun communities like those used to be.

Bren

I Agree, back when people were playing SWG, everyone was depending on everyone so you gained from being polite and help out.

Dam i miss that old community, I played many games since and even went back to swg later but its all gone.

Dam i still miss the old game.

total immersion, greatest atmosphere

greatest community ever seen (because we depended on eachother?)

greatest crafting system ever seen

Best working community based economy ever seen

did i forget something?

Can't believe i still from time to time find myself hurting from remebering those days, like an old love allmost.

I would like to beam down to new civilizations and when first contact seems a great success, ill order all the ensigns to smash everything in sight with big blasters set to kill.

great fun.

Manning my station on the bridge doing my shift, sounds boring.

I still wonder why SOE wont put up some pre-cu servers, whats the problem?

They did with other games.

Amazing when i read you guys stories from back then, I would do soo much to get it back, the atmosphere, the immersion, the vibrant energy, the skill tree, groups going after rankors, getting mails from my shop with recent sales, spending time decorating my house, going on DNA hunt on Endoor, all the social interactions...i could go on and on.

I go back here fro time to time to check, but theres just no games worth playing imo. All those magic chickens and elves an shit... NO THX!! give me some technology!!

If i bought into any of that religious stuff, i would pray to get back the game and the player energy.

Wonder if the Veteran Refuge has something to do with SOE going belly up?

Thats right, I said destructable player buildings, you heard me correctly.

"But it costs to much to erect a building."

Then decrease the cost of erecting a building.

Destructable buildings would have vastly improved the player market, remember how the low level stuff was just skill-grinding stuff you destroyed in your inventory?  Remember inflation?  Destructable buildings would have solved both problems, inflation and low level itmes you could sell on the market.

I was a resource merchant, a big part of my daily play was running out to check the harvesters or go find the new resource spawns.

And I wouldn't have had any problem with destructible buildings.  If implemented intelligently.

OK, so that rules out that concept if implemented by SWG's management team, obviously.

The basic harvester should have been fairly easy to destroy ... for a Commando with heavy weapons.  But my friendly neighborhood armorsmith should have been able to sell me Harvester Plating that made my harvester much more difficult to take out.  My weaponsmith and droid engineer should have been able to sell me Harvester Defense Units that counter-attacked that pesky Commando if he dared to open fire on my harvester.  And of course, if my harvester was under attack, I should immediately get an in-game notification so I can go and deal with the TEF'd Commando if I happen to be online.

A heavily armored Harvester would take at least 15-30 minutes to destroy with a lot of heavy weapons fire, giving me time to mount a counterattack and defend my property.

So, in an intelligently designed system, destructible buildings provide new business to at least 3 classes of crafter, act as focal points for PvP combat, and provide a new and essential GCW role for the Commando class.

But hey .... why do anything like that?  It doesn't do anything for Jedi, so obviously it's not worth doing.

This is why they failed.
Great idear.
I once thought about meat harvesters with zappers that could zap creatures and sent out drones to collect. getting good meat was a nightmare for a BE.

brgds.

btw. i loved the game and had great fun and immersion in spite of bugs.
At my old job some years ago, this guru type coder started and he became the foundation for the software the company would live on for several years after. They could never have done it without this guy...

I get the same feeling with SWG. They had some guys, i think i even saw their names mentioned a few times in here, who were the true creators of SWG or at least some of the revolutionary aspects of it.

Im not at all sure they could do it again if they tried to make an SWG2.

Also i suspect that part of the problem with SWG was that it was such an extensive sandbox, so maybe it was simply too complex (read expensive) to manage the code. This off cause would not be a fact that most companies would openly admit.

This would fit some of the things we have heard from SOE, e.g when they started talking about removing BE because they were spending so many coding-hours on it, but few played it. ergo the 8 iconic char classes.

Still i think some classic servers would work, we all loved it in spite of the bugs, i for one would be satisfied if just they fixed critical exploits etc.

It seems difficult to imagine how you can create a top-nice sandbox mmorpg that could still be profitable for whomever would make it. Maybe if we all tell them that were willing to pay much more that 15$ if just the game is nice that the crap on the marked today.

Inspired by the wonderfull Romanticizing the Ranger article.

I was BE/Rifle allmost all my time in SWG. with an alt. as shopkeeper.

There were so many aspects in beeing BE.

The most wonderfully complex crafting system, granted with bugs, but that somehow was part of the charm and great business potential.

I would head out to Endoor or Dathomir, sneaking around trying to sample DNA. As BE you don't have Camoflage but have to rely on /maskscent which works as camuflage but is alot less effective. So sneaking up to within 15m to sample on a rancor could take alot of patience and nerves of steel. Any company would increase change of detect. Amour would prohibit affective sampling (soo scary)

I would usually have a bunch of orders for high pets, and so with the bag full of dna, go home to a +25 craft  station and hope for some good results. A high pet could be sold for a few 100k.

The real money though was in chef and tailor products. to make good tissues you needed LOADS of top notch flora and meat in PE, OQ and hmm forgot the last stat. just abit below top would half the selling price. On the other hand you could make loads of money because few serious BEs were around.

At the height of my business i ran with a buddy, i could place 60 heavy flora harveys when some spawn appeared. Usually it was a race to place first because the really good spawns only appeared so not too many harveys could be placed.

The really great thing about running this business was all the dependencies. I relied heavily on hunters and people i rented lots from.  Also we were a group of flora-needers who surveyed the planets twice a week. Hackling meat prices with hunters was the most challenging part.

A bunch of us BEs would meet up in a house in the naboo mountains, exchanging recepies on great pets, bragging about which ressources we had in stock telling about samplng scary beasts etc. and so SWG was a very social experience...until that iconic shit came around and my beloved BE was gone.

to those guys who thought up the BE proffesion

Oh those days...

would ban the user's IP. There is this little thingy called a log file that should have his IP address associated with his thread.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We are 450 users behind the same gateway. Banning that IP would block all of us :)

brgds

mmorpg should update info better.

But i guess not many game publishers would come here and advertise, if mmorpg put out negative publicity.

so mmorpg has a clear interest in telling us positive things about games.

brgds

And we mustn't forget the powerfull force of people going where there is people.

If i'm looking at some game in the list on this site, because im craving for some nice mmorpg gameing, and i just sense a hint of the word "ghost town" or "dead world" etc. i quickly browse on. Theres no energy or enthusiasm in a game with few players.

This you find where there is many players and many new players.

So publishing a game is very much a matter of timing.

Maybe about now, we will start to see players starting to bore of WOW, and starting to look for other games....

and a little plee from me...

please start making some nice sci fi mmorpgs, im sick of elves and magic chickens and what have you

brgds

I have waited for a true sandbox game since the destruction of SWG. I still don't see anything interesting on the horison.

So im out of mmorpg until then.

I suspect that sandbox games are simply too complex to handle for any dev crew.

brgds

Sure thing, I want my Bio Engineer back.

Dam you guys really bring me down.

listening to your stories really brings back memories.

I spend much time on Naboo ubtil i suddenly found out there was a big world full of people.

Almmost scary to enter corelliia firt time.

oh yeh and all those shops, just great to spend an evening just shopping around and see if you could find some nice stuff. grea times

no BE=no swg for me

sneaking around rancors trying to get DNA, and them queen mites on endoor. great dna. make pets with amour allmost every time.

making great deals with ppl

get word about some great flora spawn, and rushing out placing harveys, calling friends to borrow lots.

SWG pre-cu = best game i ever played

SWG NGE = worst game i ever played

now playing starcraft - broodwar while i wait for a mmorpg worth spending time on.

Sadly I am a man with out a game. If SoR had pets and creature handling I would be happy. The only hope I have is the ducks. :(

Amen brother

Could somebody with account, go on server and scan for players (if thats still possible) go to next planet, scan etc.

do this a few times over a week.

this would give us some numbers.
