The first mmo i ever played was Ever quest, I thought it was an interesting and fascinating idea and looked like alot of fun but I could not really play it on my Pentium pro, I than tried UO and could not fall in love with its top down, skills progression system, then came Shadowbane, no quests (which took me time to get used to) but a great grouping game with incredible suspense, you could even build your own city, The bugs though were freaky-you could shoot at people half a world away and hit them LOL and the game much to my regret faded into oblivion.

I started playing vanilla wow and enjoyed its quests and challenging combat, it was the perfect game for a casual semi hc player like myself, but i could not stick with it as it lacked the suspense of Shadowbane, I then Beta tested Vanguard and thought "what a charming game but you need a monster computer to run it, we told dev to make sure they optimized it but alas they did not and lost most of their pop and the game has not recovered.

I played other mmo's Eve, Eq2, lotro (it almost had me hooked with its beautiful graphics and sound and great story line) Fe, darkfall, etc and then I  met AOC and it enthralled me with its neat combo system of combat and it super graphics combined with its great story, cut scenes and voice overs. Then I left Tortage and it was like someone kicked me in the stomach, no more voice overs, cut scenes I also realized that if you chose a melee character you would be seriously compromised in PvP, they had huge walls of text to make up for the lack of vo , who wanted to read that!!! and if you did stop to read you could be attacked by other players-no thanks.

Swtor than came into my life, like a sweet breeze blowing through your hair on a hot day, It was filled with great star wars story , cut scenes, voice overs , a similar but better combat system than Wow.  This game brought Suspense back to me, there was political intrigue, betrayal, friendships made and broken.  I found myself grouping and i rarely group in games and darn I WAS ENJOYING IT. Social points how cool was that.  The first time I played Kotar I felt the same way, I was home and they say you can never go home again-not true. Another poster commented that it is not necessarily all the features in a game that make it fun , but it is that one or two or three features that you can grab onto that lead the way.

The last couple of weeks I have tried other Mmo's and it was not the same , the wall of text was a wall to continuation for me, the combat blah, the story non existent (except in lotro) where are the vo/cut scenes that bring my game to life and provide me with immersion so I feel like I am in the game, where is the intrigue, the fun and funny companions, the story, story , story, where is it? No where my friend and that is why SWTOR has ruined me for other MMO's. Yes for the first time in my life I am not playing an mmo for one or two months and than switching to another.  There is no place like Home.

While I'm happy you like SWTOR and having not played it myself have nothing good or bad to say about the game itself,  I can't help but find such an over dramatic melodrama type post kind of creepy.   It may be a great game but please tell me you typed this using both your hands.  We can almost hear you panting in this thing.

It's a well known fact that every MMO costs $173.25 to make.

The rest is all spent on donuts and Rum in the break room.

Lighten up, Francis

Small dev teams with low budgets that think "sandbox" is synonymous with "FFA PVP".

(snip)

But it's more than that. Not everyone who wants to play a sandbox game, wants to play a FFA-PVP game. They are not one in the same. FFA-PVP is a niche within a niche, and so the target audience is woefully low.

^ This is what's wrong with sandbox games today.

Thread Salad

Just trying to catch up here.

A no larger than one gig a day non corporate homemade porn mmo?  Is that what we're working toward?

They'd put Pong on here if it would increase Ad revenues.  Personally I don't care.

This entire article and thread is just to give you the illusion you have a say anyway.

Is there any way I can blame this on the NGE?

Anything Derek Smart was within five light years of.

The "negativity" (Should be read as realistic expectations not negativity) does not help lower people's expectations and thus help save themselves from being disappointed for hyping a product up in their mind. They just ignore it and then get disappointed anyway.

The cycle on MMORPG.com is fairly constant:

1) AAA game gets announced with a known IP

2)People start to get excited purely because of the IP it is based on

3)Some screenshots/interviews come out. They usually contain some context about being innovative/different and about how amazing the game will be and how huge it will be.

4)Fans buy into all of it and start getting really excited/start creating the game in their own mind which is a bad thing.

5)First realistic folks start posting about how the game will not be as fantastic as fans are making it out to be and they are instantly labeled as trolls by the fan base so that their bubble isn't burst.

6)First details start being released and those details show the limitations of the game and how some of it will play.

7)Realistic people use this as proof of what the game will actually be like trying to allow others to have proper expectations of the game. They are labeled as trolls and told that is just what the game is NOW and that the company is planning on X Y and Z by beta

8)Beta begins and people start to truly see how the game plays, which is not at all how the super fans imagined it.

9)Realistic people once again use this as proof of how the game is just another MMO, not innovative, and nothing all that special. They are labeled as super trolls and the fans say that X Y an Z are being implemented but won't be ready until shortly before release but this will allow people time to get into the game and learn it before those new systems are added. They insist this will be good for the players

10)Game is released. Fans buy up a 1-1.5 million copies and all jump in. A couple days later the posts show up about how the game isn't at all what they expected and they are really disappointed. They then say AAA MMO X or Y that is being worked on is now the hope and the cycle repeats for them at step 1. The super fans say features X Y and Z are still coming but won't be ready for a couple of months

11) A couple of months in the sub numbers are about 25-33% of the sales numbers and slowly declining. The super fans still make posts about the amazing features that are coming up. The majority has now accept the view that the realistic people had been painting since early on in the game's production. The numbers begin to steady out to where the game will be for the next 6 months or so and show what the actual initial sales would have been if people hadn't gotten so hyped up and ignored what the game would really have been like.

For some reason there are a lot of people who just can't help but get over-hyped for each new MMO that is in the works, and then disappointed after preordering or buying a lifetime sub and they latch on to the next MMO in production. There is a severe lack of realistic expectations on this site, and anyone who offers one up is generally referred to as a troll.

They should copy this, place it in a size 72 Font and stick it dead center of the main site page.

For This game, That game or next months game, this is 100% truth.

The nostalgic epeen memories are strong in this one.

You'd think they quit making MMORPGs after the OP left Everquest.

Only pathetic losers run around bragging about imaginary accomplishments.  Stop waving your dick around and just play the goddamn game.

Oh yes, that will become one of my signatures.

SWG when the NGE smothered it with a pillow.

Flying Ewoks!

Pong Emulator by SOE.  Now with more more flying ewok goodness!

Dying breed eh?  Sure taking your sweet time about it.

Think you could hurry it up some?  I'd like THAT instant gratification.

You don't fight demons and hell spawn in your daily life?

Well I used to but then the divorce became final.

I think you're not understanding what I mean here.  I'm not calling anyone a Bioware fanboy and I'm just as excited about SW:TOR coming out as you are.  I keep an eye out for new feature  and timeline  announcements as much as anybody.

I simply wish that "every" thread that gets started about the game didn't turn into a running love story about how great a history Bioware has had by the middle of page 2.  We know Bioware is successful,  we know they have a lot of talent hired.  Nobody is putting Bioware down here.

I simply wish we could get back to talking about the game and not the company constantly.

As far as the link, it's called humor.  Relax a bit.

This may be a great game or it may be horrible.  It's too early to tell.

The problem is everyone is so obsessed with Bioware that just mentioning them seems to turn everyones brain off about the game being developed and completely focused on the Infinite wisdom of the company making it.  I agree they've done great work in the past but why don't we let them actually complete their first MMORPG before nominating the organization for Sainthood.

Current reaction of Bioware obsessed fans.

Sometimes you just have to face the fact that there comes a time when you have to take Old Yeller out behind the barn and pull the trigger....

My largest concern is that the gravity from his immense ego might cause tidal waves around the planet.

I'd like to see him shot into space, it's the bringing him back I could live without.
