Wow is designed for the lowest common denominator. (i.e. kids and adults that think like kids).

The game has to be very simplistic to appeal to those people, and I hope and pray that SW:TOR is not that kind of game. I personally don't want the kiddies and simple adults in any game I play.

MMOs were so much better back when they appealed to nerds and computer geeks only, since Wow came out, we have to deal with all the ignorant mangy jackholes and gold farmers on the planet.

The main focus of the game, from what I gathered of the 1up blog thing, is the story of your character. Okay, that sounds neat and all but how exactly is this suppose to be achieved with unique classes for each faction? Does that not sound like a contradiction to anyone else? I can't say I'm not disappointed. I want to know though, who is ready to do 40 man raids on Exar Kun and who, among you, have lost faith in this game already?

The game has not ben released yet.

And if you feel the way you sound, you shouldn't play it, you should stay far away from any game that doesn't look or feel exactly the way you want it to.

You came to this thread of your own volition to read it yourself, no one forced anything on you. So maybe you shouldn't actively search out threads that mention X-fire stats, that way your delicate sensibilities won't be harmed.

If you need information from folks that truly enjoy AoC, I can recommend a site with forums that cater specifically to AoC fans, they do a good job of weeding out a significant portion of the negative posters, and that way you can enjoy rubbing elbows with others that sing the praises of AoC and Funcom.

The bulk of gamers I know will not touch an mmo because they have a fundamental problem with monthly fees for a game they own.  Also, there is the perception that mmo's take too much time, are addictive, and will ultimately suck up all your free time.

Well, actually all those points are true in my opinion.

But I have tried too many MMOs without monthly fees that failed miserably in the "FUN" department, so I guess the saying "you get what you pay for" applies in this instance.

MMOs don't take that much time, it depends on how much time you decide to invest, some MMOs are addictive, and the one's that we enjoy will suck up free time.

The only MMOs I played at launch were:

AO, EQ2, DDO, AoC.

Of those 4, AO was the worst, AoC was a very close second, followed by DDO then EQ2. And have played a decent cross section of other MMOs (but not at launch). I just find it odd that the two worst MMO launches that I personaly experienced were both Funcom games. I must give them a little slack on AO though, since they were still a very inexperienced company, but AoC proved they didn't learn a thing.

FC will develope a new MMO, but they maybe SoE or EA by the time it ready for launch. The company seems ripe for picking and when their new game launches using the AoC engine the parent company will get all the credit for being innovative.

Anyhoo, as far as I can tell, the Game Director is none other than the original creator of the Anarchy Online lore Ragnar Tornquist ( http://ragnartornquist.com/ ). 

The game will use the Age Of Conan engine and is based on H.P. Lovecraft lore set in the modern times but with an element of the occult in there.   Think of an armageddon type MMO (from the religious sense, NOT the film).

 

That won't matter if Funcom can't make enough money to pay their bills.

AoC was supposed to be their "money maker" and if they continue hemmoraging players they won't have enough to pay for AoC developers, servers, bandwith, PR and marketing, let alone an additional  developing team to produce other games to over-hype.

But we will know more about all that at the end of the month when their Q3 report comes out.

Looks like the new game director might actually release the rest of the PVP update.

Hopefully the players that are left will get a big kick out of this patch.

Some of us fans just want to see a ST MMO come to reality.

Sure it won't have everything that everyone wants, but that is impossible to do. The same thing can be said about every MMO in existance, none of them are perfect. And we can hardly expect Cryptic to put in all the features that PE had planned, they are two different companies, after all.

It doesn't bother me that all the stations are not going to be occupied by my close friends that play games, we are all in our late 30s early 40s with families, jobs and busy lives so there would be too many times where we can't all play at the same times. I just want an expansive ST universe that I can explore in, fight in and experience.

The game is years away from completion, so nothing is written in stone, yet. Cryptic is still working out all the ideas and are getting input by the ST fans. I have faith that even if the game isn't EXACTLY the way I picture an STO game to be, it will still be fun and exciting to experience.

I wanted to be a ship's engineer myself and work in the bowels of a starship (yes I am a Scotty fan), but I won't be dissapointed because I will still be able to play an MMO based on my absolutely favorite IP.

I just recently started playing the SOE free trials for Vanguard and EQ2.

Althugh Vangaurd looks nice, and is new to me (I'm an ex EQ2 player) I would vote on EQ2.

Vanguard has issues still, it lags, the terrain graphics hiccup, when you equip some items the character graphics don't refresh,  occaisonaly when running my toons legs would be going 200mph, yet I was moving normal speed, I saw a few mobs where the arms legs and head where in the wrong places and it was making odd noises when it walked.

Vanguard still needs a lot of work

EQ2 just updated so that it takes advantage of multi-core processors, has been around awhile so it is content rich with tons of expansions, the graphics are still good (better than some games released in the last 2 years), new starting zones, new races... I may re-sub myself

Bottom line

EQ2 beats Vanguard, mainly due to all the graphical problems it has, that will hopefully be addressed quickly. But for the time being I would recommend EQ2.

As an FYI so you know I don't have a sub par machine: I run an intel core2duo E8400 O.C.ed to 3.6GHz, 2GB DDR3 1333 @1550FSB, 8800GTS 512 (G92) O.C.ed 700/1000. WinXP SP3 with all current drivers, and stripped of non-essential services.

Major gaming blogs, like Joystiq, seem to have the hardest hit to their traffic. Joystiq traffic is down 43%, Destructoid is down by 36%, and GoNintendo is down by 38%. The worst, however, is Kotaku, who has seen a falling in daily visitors by a whopping 49%.

Even the biggest of gaming sites is falling victim to the trend: Traffic to Gamespot.com has fallen by 29%, while IGN is down 33%, and 1UP is down by 26%.

Did Flourine compare the European Forums where the game sold more to get an accurate representation of forums traffic in the hypothesis that the game forums are dying?

Ummm how do posts within a game's official forums relate at all to the traffic on general gaming sites?  All that post said was that forum traffic on AoC was down 95%.  That's a major loss of traffic and considering only people who have accounts can post there reflects on their subscription numbers.

Tried last night and this morning...I can get to the Zboard store site, but not the main site and the auto update keysets cannot connect to anything either.

Did it come with any game specific key layouts or did you just get the standard Z-board?

Not to bag on it, but I have not heard much good about them, from what I read on the AoC one, some of the buttons don't even work properly in game...

 

But considering it's AoC, no telling if it's the Z-board or AoC that's screwed up there.

They do have a reputation in that regard, don't they?

Actually the Sept 17th patch fixed the grey map and oom errors for almost everyone....
