I'm keeping my eye on Pantheon for now nothing else is looking too intriguing.

i think the issue here is you are stuck in the past TBH

nothing wrong with only liking mmo's that are like classic EQ or old skool mmo's (which i loved by the way)

but you need to realize that, that's a you issue and not an issue with the genre as a whole.

there are plenty of mmo gamers out there that could not bare the thought of playing a time sink like classic EQ these days, me being one of them.

IMO there is plenty to like about many of the newer mmo's on the market if you like RPG's and gaming in general.

if all you like are old skool mmo's then yeah, i can see that as a problem for you and you should probably just "review" those types of games.

The issue is this game in not a real MMORPG. It's just an online RPG game and a very poorly done online component at that. You don't have to agree with the review but I think it's a fair breakdown of the game and are my impressions after a substantial play session. This game shouldn't have a monthly fee and will most likely suffer the same fate as SWTOR. The only people being fooled by the developers calling this an MMORPG are the people who've only been playing them say since World of Warcraft. Anybody whose played a real MMORPG before will be able to tell right off the hop this is not an MMORPG.

The grotto is the one I played in today and It was short and very forgettable the experience overall it wasn't very good and the bosses were pretty lack luster. Aside from this most people are just running around doing their own thing trying to rush through the quest grind so the multiplayer aspects in this game are very weak. The game would've been exceedingly better if it was exactly like say Skyrim or Morrowind even with just a 4 player online component.

See that is what ES fans want (me included) but in mmorpgs permanently altering the world like we do in our own single player ES games would just be chaotic. I think Zenimax is doing what they can, but given the nature of what ES fans like you and I are used to, what Zenimax has done does not resonate with us, we don't impact the world like we are used to doing when we play Oblivion or Skyrim. In those games as we play and listen to the dialog and react, we impact the game permantely. We just don't have that with ESO.

It's not a game for ES fans - ES fans are left confused and distracted and annoyed.

Yeah man pretty much it didn't need to be and MMORPG it would've made more money and fans would've been happy. This won't appeal to a mass MMORPG audience or the single player Elder Scrolls fans. So no ones really happy here eh ?

Saying no one is a bit to generalized and somewhat unfair to the game.  While I don't find it earth-shattering and has its flaws, I've enjoyed my time enough in the betas enough to preorder.  Just because you don't like something doesn't mean the rest of the world agrees with you.  :)

Thanks for pointing out that generalization let me fix that ;)

Indeed sir Darkfall was a good game not a fan of Unholy Wars but the original Darkfall was alot of fun one of the best MMORPG's released in a long time. It had its problems like any game but was still alot of fun.

So i'll get right to it my character was a Dark Elf Sorceror and I reached just shy of level 13. I played the game both as a roamer just going off into the mists and also as a standard quest round up and progress style. I played a little more than 20 hours over the past few days and I am a big fan of the Elder Scrolls series. Also MMORPG's and have played many since 1999.

I was really looking forward to this game because the concept of playing the Elder Scrolls with a multiplayer component just added to it seemed very appealing. What quickly became apparent is that is not really the case here.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________

GRAPHICS:

Really the graphics are well done. The environments are varied and the effects and lighting are all really good as well. A little less than Skyrim quality but still great! The character models are good the animations are a little poor especially in first person but not something that was lingering as a problem for me its easily fixed with a bit of polish.

SOUND:

Music and sound effects in the game again were great. Many tracks had my whistling along which is always good. The voice acting did add a lot to the game as well and I didn't come across any poorly played characters.

GAMEPLAY:

This is where the game really nose dives. It's not to say that whats there isn't implemented well. It's more to say that the game just doesn't play like The Elder Scrolls at all. What you get is a generic MMORPG framework with an Elder Scrolls theme. Instead of the more obvious route.......   -__-

COMBAT:

The combat is more of an illusion of real time action. The crosshair and targeting doesn't matter so much for aiming its just used to select your target. So your left mindlessly clickling away like the standard auto attack and quick bar cool down mechanics. The combat made me feel like I was playing Dungeons and Dragons Online or something... poorly done and insulting to think people won't know the difference...

PROGRESSION:

Another core issue with this game is that it's setup as a linear zone progression. Is kind of sad because in the loading screen message you are encouraged to pick a direction and roam. The only thing I found when I roamed was herbs, ore a seldom chest and doors and caves I couldn't enter most of the time. So with out doing a quest grab at zone hubs I'm now restricted. I also tried to leave the first zone when I finally got to the mainland and I couldn't. The game told me I didn't meet the requirements. So I was forced to do the mundane quest grabs just to move into the world.

Quests are not nearly as good as in the single player games. The caves and other descendable areas are so small and there are no enemies in them because of that reason. The best way for me to describe the quest system is that its just like World of Warcraft with voiceovers added to it. They try to disguise the mundane things as best as they can but I find that just makes it more apparent. Not much more to say here. The main quest line is basically single player so it makes you ask why this game is even online at all... which leads to the next problem....

MULTIPLAYER AND GROUPING

The game is not a true MMORPG in say the sense of a game like Asheron's Call, EverQuest, Ultima Online, Darkfall, Anarchy Online etc... This game is more like SWKOR and a dash of WoW mixed together with Elder Scrolls painted over it...

You have to group with people if you want to do the group dungeons.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I didn't play PvP because I really had nothing left that kept me wanting to log in. I stopped playing shortly before writing this review 5 hours shy of the beta ending. I'm sure it's fun for a few rounds but like the rest of the game I can't see it keeping me online in ESO. It's sad for me because I really wanted to like this game and tried my best to find some good in it. The game just isn't a good single player game which is how it plays most of the time. Also it isn't a good multiplayer game which is why they are planning on charging the monthly fee for it. Really it just makes me want to go back to dreaming of when I will finally get to play the real Elder Scrolls Online.

I'm getting sick of saying this, your opinion is not law. I saw a .05 second saber swing, that looked like a saber swing. I guess I'm kidding myself.

Trolls are out in force today...

You might be fine with settling for less than the best from a huge company that expects top dollars from you for their product. Also It's your choice to continue to fund the mundane! I'm thinking we have more than just my opinion lumped into the mix here though as the general tone of this thread points to many people calling out the bland combat.  This is further reinforced by recent video footage showcasing the said bland, uninspiring combat. I didn't start this thread I'm just chiming in to agree with the OP and to make a comment about how this issue is previaling in more than one way in the game industry. The space combat looks great. If only they could've translated that into ground combat we wouldnt be discussing this right now.

2010+ MMO developers MOTO : Clone WoW and bring in the $$. and you can all thank yourselves for that becase you are all going to buy this game even with your issues with it.

This hits the nail right on the head here. EA is basically trying to form a strategy to completely eat away chunks from the MMO market. They first secured their stance when they purchased Mythic Games and pumped out World of Warhammer to lap up the haggared WoW players. Now they are planning to initiate phase two and take a portion of some other Sci Fi MMO's pie. They don't care about gamers, innovation or leading the industry in new directions. All they care about is making a game as generic as possible appealing to as many demographics as they possbilly can to ensure maximum profit. This game will esentially be starwars for soccer moms and a monkey could probably play it. When i seen that it had PvP warzones ( battlegrounds ) and then raids I just had to laugh! Stop being so nieve and funding corrupt companies who want to sell you the same crap year after year. I wouldn't be suprised if you aren't all doing daily's after the first monthly patch.

You guys must've seen this coming. God I only watched one developer interview regarding STO and the lead designer sounded like a complete idiot, all he kept saying was that the game was just champions with a new theme. In a nut shell he was saying  that they we slapping it together using the champions tech and just adding new assets as he put it. Quite lame if this is how most bigger studio go about game design , not that im at all suprised it was just i never thought someone would be so blatant about it.

If you want to see Jack Emmert make a fool of himself then watch this video:

i think it reveals enough about what to expect in terms of quality from STO.

 something stinks here....

Darkfall deserves some recognition as its currently the best PVP option on the market. I wouldnt even consider WoW to have real PvP, its more like a mini game. no real consequence to any of it. DAOC had decent PvP 6 years ago, its hardly one of the best though. i'm cool with EVE being there it's offering something unique. Ultima, i dont think i have to say anything here we all know that deserves a spot.  Warhammer ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? hmmm .... hmmmm .... well i guess this does make sense considering how many EA sponsored banners this site has. but this is basically WoW, so i don't have so say why that shouldn't be there.

so what does all this come down to.....

well my friends it comes down to Darkfall :D

What a bunch of nonsense. Aion is a terrible game, it's a blatant rip off of WoW with nothing different but wings. Theres no trouble to tell NC soft slipped over some money to MMORPG.com for this favour . Darkfall deserves this award as it's the most innovative and fun MMORPG to be released in the past 10 years. let alone just 2009, what is wrong with you people.

You have to realize that the only reason EA bought those studio's is to tarnish their name and eventually close them down to increase their chances of monopolizing the video games industry. Its all too obvious.

There are no seperate body hit boxes, however if you hit from behind you do more damage. Also you can debuff stats to do more damage.

The hits it takes to kill someone ranges on weapon type, and the opposing player's armor. but if they are both naked using leaf blades it may take around 10-12 strikes. arrows do some good damage, and higher level spells are ferocious as well. There is a lot of fun, and variety in the game play. For example you can use knock back and send enemies into acid water to take some health off of them. :D

Hello MMORPG community. As of now there are already some reviews surfacing on the web so I figured I would give my opinion on the game.

First of all I think it's important to give you some backround as to the games i've played, and enjoyed. I'll start with Asheron's Call as I think this is the game that Darkfall resembles most. I was an early player of Asheron's Call and enjoyed the Darktide server, if you were that type of player Darkfall will definitley fit your playstyle. Along with this I've also played EQ Rallos, and Tallon Zek. If you were a player who enjoyed this type of game play , you will also find a home in Agon. Finally I have fond memories of Ultima Online, and Darkfall is certainly composed of many of the great components of Ultima Online. This is not to say that only players who have previously enjoyed these games will not enjoy Darkfall, I just wanted to address this player base selectivley as I can relate to the amount of waiting there has been for a game like this to finally be released.

Anyways after 7 years of waiting ( i've personally been waiting close to this time as well ) Darkfall is ready to be opened up to the World. I can't stop playing, and if you have a moment i'll tell you why:

Race: Alfar

Player Type: PK

Skill Focus: Great Sword, Archery, Spell Casting

The Freedom -

There is as promised by the developers an open, and I must say HUGE world. There is so much to see in Agon, and it just looks stunning. There have been quotes before stating that the game does look much better behind the screen, and this is definitley true. The world has so much variety in the structure of the landscape, and so many interesting areas that appear as you journey across the world. I was exploring a Soutern island of the Alfar region with a friend of mine , we stumbled upon a castle with no obvious entrance to be seen. We circled the castle to find a cave leading underground. We went inside and after a few twists and turns we were greeted by the Sevrii, powerful undead dwellers of this particular castle. Experiences like this are common in Darkfall, and the sense of adventure, and exploration are never lost when travelling the world.

Aesthetics -

In short the game is beautiful. If you are the type of person who froths over having hyper realistic graphics with intense usage of all the latest shaders you may think otherwise, but there is no denying the sheer amount of detail, and beauty of this game. You can tell a lot of effort was put into the design of the world, game objects, and enemies. To comment somewhat negativley the animations are a portion of Darkfall's visual design that is slightly lack luster, however I believe this is more due to use of lower frame animations to increase performance. Basically the animations individually look excellent, some could use a few more frames, and they could cross blend, but overall this isn't something that really bothered me while playing. Most of the time I was quite impressed with how everything moves, and looks especially while in combat. With the eerie world music, and the clouds slowing wisping overhead as the moon's circle agon you really feel as you are a part of the world.

Combat -

I'm focusing a section on combat because this area has hardly changed in the MMORPG genre over the past 10 years. Combat in Darkfall reminds me of a combination of Asheron's Call, Oblivion, and Rune. There are so many elements that can impact a battle, and there is a lot of freedom to use  the realtime physics to your advantage. You can kite an enemy so they run up hill after you at a slower pace enabling you to get more spells fired before they come within meele range. Hide behind objects to dodge arrows, or spells. You can also maneuver around other players to avoid the arc of their weapons. There is a lot of skill involved in Darkfall.

The artificial intelligence is quite challenging. I've been killed many times by the AI using some pretty interesting tactics. They switch their weapons based on the circumstances of battle, and chase you into some pretty interesting structures which i found impressive. Normally AI isn't smart enough to chase you through elaborate terrain, but the enemies in Darkfall often tend to give me a run for my money. Overall there is a lot of fun to be had with combat. For those wondering there are multiple attack types, such as overhead, side swing, and other special attacks like Whirlwind which makes your character spin doing area damage, and there is a stab attack as well, and there are also knock back skills you can use to send your foes flying wherever you may choose !

Delivery -

There is very little missing here from what the developers have been promising this whole time. I have only had a limited amount of time playing the game, however there has never been a sense of dissapointment, only smiles. This game delivers plain and simple - If you want to be an archer who hides in the tree's stalking the wanderers who pass by that is completely possible, and i've actually done this myself its quite fun. Crafting although the interface, and overall design is simple, I find to be very effective especially considering there are lots of rare nodes spawning different types of crafting materials. There is a lot of fun to have as a crafter in Agon. It will take work , however you can make some awesome stuff. I can talk more about how much is in the game, but that should already be expected. It's unfortunate that gamers have to be questioning the given feature list of a game, but i assure you that Darkfall delivers on it's promise.

Overall -

Darkfall rocks my socks. I was never doubtful that this game would deliver , and it's been very much worth the wait. I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for the Pre-Order link because i want to ensure that i have a copy come lauch day. This is a skill based game, it plays very much like a First person shooter. There are moments when you will die and be frustrated , but it is the nature of these types of games. If you enjoy this type of gameplay than I feel its safe to say that Darkfall will also rock your socks. If you enjoy a tame experience with complete predictability , and no consequence than Darkfall may not be up your alley.

Hope this helps - Cheers!

The game is real, the game is incredible, the game will be released this month on Feb 25th. shut up and stop whining

Good points, and as far as im concerned if nothing is posted in terms of news before the end of the week, then Aventurine making release doesn't look to hopeful. We're all in the dark anyways so who knows what could be happening behind the scenes. Just hope for the 22nd, if not then shit, that sucks!

Yeah, that is what I am talking about !

Go Darkfall, usher in a new era of MMORPG gaming!

Assumptions will get you know where. Where have you found any bad comments on this game since beta opened to the public? I've yet to read any, everything i've read about beta tester impressions talked about how great the game is. I understand that you don't want to be let down again, although I really doubt they'd make the same mistake as Farlan. If Aventurine were the same type of greedy scum bags, they'd of released a long time ago.

You blindly accuse Garriot for the failure of Tabula Rasa. Little do you know that he was not the only designer on the game, and had to make sacrifices and comprimises numerous times if i remember correctly. The other designer didnt have a good relationship with Garriot, which from the start leads the game in a bad direction.

What little good in Tabula Rasa was tidbits of Garriots design elements, unfortunatley the mesh of the two designers was quite apparent, and the game suffered from limiting mechanics.

If Garriot has some creative freedom to create a new online RPG, I can't wait to see what he comes up with. A lot of people on this forum needs be more critical to the illusions in the media. The poor guys name was plastered on the box, used as a marketing ploy so people are quick to point fingers. Look a little bit deeper eh?

The problem with the 1 Beta key is that it compounds people's already growing fear that there are too few people playing the Beta. This close to release they really need to start thinking about stress tests. I'm not talking 20-30 people or a few dozen AI bots, I mean real stresses to address the issues that are going to occur when hundreds or thousands of people log in. The game might be 'feature complete' as Tasos put it, but what use is that if the server grinds to a halt on January the 22nd?

They don't need players to stress anything, the AI alone can accomodate for players being in the world, that and they've definitley already stressed the server ages ago...
