Reasons not to play Vanguard:

-Brad McQuaid himself found this game unfixable when attempting a return a few months back

-Game is on autopilot with very few significant updates that don't center around the cash shop

-Still has more bugs then Fear Factor

-Game was clearly made for grouping but sony turned it into a pointless solo grind with many wasted dungeons

-at least 33% of the quests are bugged in some way

-Most of the world is empty or without purpose

-Clay Fighter graphics, dull looking world, half the armor/weapons look very awkward

-Vanguard employees have insanely high turnover rates, so you're always stuck with devs that don't really care about their job.

-The game will never see a single expansion, so you quickly come to the realization that it's a poor use of your time

-Almost no endgame

-Very laggy server, terrible pings 80% of the time

-No pvp or roleplay server in a game that could easily have both

-Zones are divided into chucks that hitch/lag and crash every time you walk over them. Possibly the worst area loading design ever conceived.

Not gonna say VG doesn't have its issues, but I'd hardly call this non-biased, even if you did keep in a short list of positives.

Yeah, I already set everything to the highest settings in-game so my machine can handle it. Also, did you perhaps mean CacheSizeMegs=32 and to change that to 256? I'm not seeing a SystemCache=32M.

Yeah that's what I was after.

The setfog command in game does what it sounds like, it will set the fog distance to specific distances and color hues. If you were to just type /setfog 99999999 it sets the max distance way far away so you can see forever. It looks a bit unnatural on the horizons to do that, but you can. The settings listed above are probably a little more normal while still pushing the max distance back.

As for settings, how's your machine, can you run the game on max in-game settings okay? There's one setting in particular in the sysconfig.ini file (going from memory here since I'm at work). Not far into that file there should be a line that says something like:

SystemCache=32M

Change the 32M to 256M and the game should run significantly smoother. The only problem is you have to do it again every time you patch, because the patcher will replace the modified file with the standard one. So you have to let it patch and then edit it before you click play. I made an edited version of the script and have it around, then use a script to copy it before hitting play.

To my knowledge there is no trivial loot code in VG.

I also disagree with the OP.  Vanguard is a beautiful game that was way, WAY ahead of it's time and released far too early.

It's open scope,it's beautiful scenery, it's crafting and diplomacy system, and it's sense of adventure are what make this game fantastic.

It is also an example of what happens when a Dev is forced to release a game prematurely. You would think they would have learned from this by now.

It is a crying shame that this game is only a shadow of what it could have become.

Which game is it you're playing?  Vanguard is so bugged and it has been for this many years it will never get fixed.  It's a game that was ruined, period.

Eh, I've been playing VG since beta. It certainly has its bugs. However, I've never seen bugs so bad that it makes things unplayable or even close. I would never call the game ruined. I enjoy it greatly, and have definitely gotten my six years and counting of entertainment out of it.

VG does have most of those immersion things you are mentioning, especially in terms of the sound effects. I guess it might not have quite as many random birds and such flying around, but it definitely has some, and other wildlife, and definitely sound.

Here are a couple videos of just the ambient/landscape environments in VG, that actually focuses on the surroundings and views. Pretty cool, actually.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvU-C8_nDY4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j3HW0vZ_Cg

I've been playing VG since it launched. I too always feel sad when I see people posting on here about what they want and knowing VG has just about all of it, but they probably have never and won't ever try it. All because of the bad launch horror stories or now, its age.

I'd hardly call VG wowified. It has both elements of sandboxes and themeparks in it, and it is more quest driven than straight grinding, but it's far from WoW or many of its clones. It does so many things well, and actually not all that many things badly anymore.

The graphics overall are still actually pretty damn good, I think. The graphic design and landscapes/world especially. The character models and animations, though, need updating. But I'm willing to look past those, always have been in games if the gameplay and community are good. Server performance has been an issue for many, although the game has been heavily optimized recently to cut back on all that. The game isn't really the ghost town many believe it to be either, although if you play at really off times it might be pretty sparse.

Apart from those things though, and PvP, which I know some people really do want, and that's fine, VG does so much stuff really well. If the type of game at all interests you, you should at least try it out.

There was actually just a rather large patch to VG yesterday where they did a big round of optimizations and updates, with a new big raid dungeon coming out soon.

Edit: I can't spell apparently.

To be fair, you picked just about the worst example of a long fight in VG. There are plenty that take longer. That said, no, the fights aren't several minutes long unless you're raiding or kiting something above your level. There are a few that take a good long while if you're doing that.

Reading through this thread has made me even more sad for Vanguard. With a respectable launch and subsequent handling most of you would probably have been playing it for the past 6 years. Of course I don't know how many of you have actually tried it, but I only say this because the vast majority of comments in this thread reflect my own thoughts, and I know I greatly enjoy VG. Nothing else has really appealed much to me since.

It's still worth playing if you haven't, even if only to check it out for a bit because you bypassed it. The only real problem with it is that it's small now. Or people expecting it to have 2013 graphics in a 2007 game.

You can definitely solo all the way to max level. It does depend a bit on which class you play because a few of them, especially warriors, suck at soloing. However, there's plenty to do to max out your level solo, you'll just miss out on many of the great quest lines and dungeons to explore.

While Vanguard does encourage you to group, and I recommend you do so when you can, soloing to max is not as challenging as it once was.

Tanking is in most mmos the most forgiving role.

People will disagree with this but it's the truth:

Can ignore a majority of game mechanics. Doesn't have to worry about acing their rotation because threat is a non factor and their dps is low anyway so they dont lose much by messing up. So all you have to worry about is positioning (which everyone does moreso than tanks since what hits tanks hard oneshots dps/healers)

In other words: Dont worry just do it it's redicioulusly easy.

This is only true in a game where, as you say, threat/aggro is a non factor. Tanks are much more fun to play, I think, when the job isn't so damn simple. In Vanguard at least, aggro management is very much an issue, and it's not always that easy for the tank to hold it. Some of the top-end experienced tanks have pretty considerable threat generation, but for the most part, it's not that easy. It's one of the reason I like and play VG, despite it's faults, it's just not as simple as most of the other games around.

You should check out Vanguard. It's a lot more like EQ than WoW, and it's a lot more about the journey than the destination.

Actually, if old school isn't a problem, try out Vanguard. It has some of the best healer classes, including disciple and bloodmage, both very different healers with pretty unique mechanics that heal by being active and attacking. Even the VG Cleric is more of a battle cleric than the really old school EQ cleric, especially if they spec into War affinity. And the shaman has 3 patrons to choose from and can use them to very actively participate.

If there's one thing Vanguard really did right, it's the classes.

While I'll admit the animations and character models are not the best for sure, if you can manage to get past those, Vanguard really does have a lot to offer someone who is looking for what you describe. The entire world is open and free to explore at any time, there are no artificially restricted areas and no instances.

From what I can tell, you losing track of time would have the most to do with the immersion factor you feel about the game; getting lost in what you're doing in game. It also sounds like you want to sort of stay away from the instant gratification games.

That leads me to suggest some of the older school MMOs to you, namely Vanguard or LotRO or something else along those lines. I don't have as much experience with lotro but in Vanguard you can easily spend 4-5 hours running a full dungeon in a group and have it feel like much less. you just have to make sure you can deal with the lower populations and somewhat dated graphics.

Vanguard have a robust crafting minigame onpar with SWG you should check it out.

IMO Vanguard is the game that ruined crafting. It was one of the 1st(that i played) that offered class "spheres" meaning yes you could not craft everything but your crafter was also a combatant. That is what changed things.

If you want a crafting economy there is no way around it. You need to have a crafting class. Not a mage with silk weaving but a choice between either a mage or a silk weaver.

Now I wont completly say vanguard was a bad crafting game. It wasnt. The crafting was fun and you ended up with rare-ish items through the system but again what it did do was remove the crafter as a 1st class and made it 2ndary.

Vanguard didn't make anything secondary, only separate. The different spheres are just independent of each other. I know plenty of characters that are max level crafters but have not done adventuring for more than a few hours. Of course you can level both up if you so choose as well, along with Diplomacy.

To be fair, there are still four different starting areas. :)

Also, the team and the community may be small but content is still on the way. They have a major performance patch coming soon (something about completely revamping how the game accesses database/server information) which should help, and also Cave of Wonders, which is a high level raid dungeon. The past year has seen multiple content releases for lower levels too.

So yeah, small but far from dead. :)

Vanguard has pretty much everything you're looking for, if you don't mind an older game with a smaller (but very friendly and helpful) community. The only thing it sort of lacks from the list is extensive talent trees I suppose, but you do have control over your stat allocation every level, so you can customize in different ways.

If you do jump into VG, feel free to look me up. My main character has the same name.
As a game that's not in your list but very similar, Vanguard has a pretty decent f2p setup with a good sub option behind it. There are only a couple minor restrictions to f2p, and the sub comes with some nice little perks.
