Exactly my point. Might surprise you but i play both EVE and WoW. I have 2 EVE accounts and 1 WoW account and when i tried to get 2 of my RL WoW friends to play EVE and get past the trial they quit in 2 days. All these so called F2P WoW clones have the polish of something i could code in BASIC and they cant even be considered competition.

The one other reason why lots of other games fail when compared to WoW(WAR and AOC for example) is because they are new. Players today are very unforgiving towards newer MMO's. WoW has reached its polished state after what 4 years? 5 years? i forget. WAR and AOC havent had that kind of time to polish their game. When WoW launched it was buggy as hell with frequest server crashes and CTD's, but not today because they have had 4-5 DAMN years to work on their game.

Nowadays the attitude is like, "Oh AoC its a nice game but its combat sucks...screw it im uninstalling". Now i'm not a time traveller, but yea who's to say that WAR or AoC cant match or even surpass WoW given another 2-3 years? But sadly they wont because they will soon die out and work on those games will stop. I seriously dislike people who compare every damn game to WoW.

For one, im glad that if Darkfall turns out to be what it says(thats a HUGE IF, higher than Everest atm) then it wont be as crowded as WoW, of course there will be carebears but in thinner herds :D

I agree with you wholeheartedly that customers are much harder on MMO launches now then they were in the past. What I completely disagree with you on though, is the statement that WoW took 4 years to polish to it's current state. In fact it was not even 4 months. They did have server overloads at launch, a problem they quickly rectified. What they did not have, for the most part, were bugs in gameplay, and gaps in design philosophy, that plaugued similar games at the time like EQ2.

Note, this is aside from the sandbox conversation and I am sorry for that. But WoW was quite polished at launch. They have added much more to the game in the last four years for certain, but the core game is the same now as it was at launch.

As for Darkfall? It will never challenge WoW, but if it is a good game, people will play it.

Maybe its because some of us are sick and tired of people that generally haven't really done anything that get ton of sympathy for thier families and coverage on the news and other media. But the Firefighter that dies of smoke inhalation saving 4 kids from a burning build gets a maybe a 1 minute blurb on local news then is forgot by the rest of the world.

Sorry, Its sad anyone dies but if you expect me to cry over this then you seriously over value her contribution to society in my opinion.

Who asked anyone to cry? Who said anything about her contribution being any greater than your firefighter? Who even said this is going to get more than one minute on most news casts. Your statement us utter nonsense.

If we want to leave a passing thought on a forum, then so be it. If you want to badger the wife of what some consider to be an icon, well. As I said before, that is your right, but damn.

If you are one of the people who were some how offended by the fact that we are "hyped" about Darkfall, then you would probably get slaughtered in game and cry on the forums about how you need safezones and epic loot.

We will take your Hype meter advertising for our game, but we do not need your support MMORPG.com

The fun thing about you? Once all your little kitty friends become tire of swinging teh hammer leik in teh video they will quit. If the game is any good at that point, there will be an influx of new players. The second gen players will be more the "other" mmo crowd, and if your game wants to continue making money, they wil soften sort of liek L2.

You have always had PvP options, almost every game has a PvP server. I just can't wait to see youback here complaining both 1) How you got ganked or 2) How you got nerfed or 3) How the game is all care-bear in 6 months after release or 4) How no one plays anymore.

I played WH beta, it's not even salvageable (WoW, graphics and all). This game doesn't stand a chance. Just an opinion.

Anyone who thinks that a "PvP server" is equivalent to open PvP has no idea what they are talking about.

UO and AC Darktide showed us the potential and flaws of open PvP.  The Darkfall developers are disciples of those games, and have combined the good from those games, with their own style and innovative new features.

If you don't like it, tough.  The game is coming out and we will all see then.

As for representing the Darkfall community, I would say that I represent "forumfall" pretty well.  I'll be nice and civil if I see nice and civil.  MMORPG.com has always been hostile to Darkfall, so I am hostile to MMORPG.com

As you can see, my join date for this site is '04, yet I only have a handful of posts.  My SOLE reason for being on here is to defend Darkfall.  I've done so for years, and with beta coming close, I won't let the naysayers get the better of us.

Apologizing is not the in the style of Darkfall.  If I could, I could kill and loot you.  Unfortunately, the forums don't have those features, so my posts will have to suffice.

I only hope that the main community is more like arct and not like you.

If not, DF wont survive.

im ussally nice

On Sunday, Cryptic Studios Chielf Creative Officer Jack Emmert officially unveiled Star Trek Online to a Trek convention in Vegas. Fortunately for those of us not in attendance, the event was available for viewing online. During the preentation, Emmert revealed some details about the highly anticipated upcoming MMORPG.

On Sunday, Cryptic Studios made their very first public presentation concerning the recently announced Star Trek Online. The presentation was made in Las Vegas appropriately, at a Star Trek convention. This was smart for a number of reasons including the fact that in a crowded MMORPG market, the core fans of the IP are an important demographic for the upcoming game. Then, or course, there’s the fact that at a Star Trek convention, you can have your game introduced by Leonard Nimoy, the original Mr. Spock.

Before continuing, I should make it clear that the full presentation has been made available via www.startrekonline.com if you’re interested in watching the whole 43 minute long presentation. For those of you who aren’t, I’m going to try to cover the most important bits:

Check it out here.

Yeah, what a let down. I didn't really want to play a captain. So, it sounds like PoTBS on the ship, and what? Sword of the New World on ground?

They are playing the odds that most people do want to command a ship. I think that is a safe bet.  In the MMO world, safe bets don't lose money.  For people that like a supporting role, I hope they offer instancing scenarios. Maybe you can work for an NPC Captain in defending the ship when it is boarded, or help a Station from its power source from exploding, or planetary missions, etc.

We shall see how things evolve in the coming years

I would say you are right, if it hadn't been introduced at a Star Trek Convention =). Star Trek fans are all over the map when it comes to character popularity preference. My favorites were, Spock, Data, Jadzia Dax, Chicote and T'Pol (rowr). Everyone being a starship captain seems to make it very one sided.

And for away missions, my guess is you'll have to control multiple toons.

The whole thing just seems like its going in a very strange direction.

The word 'integrated' right there is going to net you a world of hurt, in most games these days.

For what it's worth, regardless of the problems that AoC does have, it's your own responsibility to know what the system requirements are, and whether or not you actually meet them.

What can you say other than, "buy an xbox or ps3"?

The majority of people on the official Darkfall boards are not as blind and stupid as one might think. Sure there's a few there that just belong in a cage somewhere to be experimented on but for the most part if they do not really DELIVER with this video there's going to be a huge backlash..

So will Darkfall be having a sexy party in August or will a cheap Nicaraguan hooker with crabs show up and spoil it all?

You know what time it is...

If after seven years they can't even release a video, or figure out how to make a video?

I originaly was all for the idea of the cuts they made but now I have to say it is sounding like a bait and switch. Do they have any intention of putting in the other 4 cities?

he spoke about people preferring to protect certian cities and said they didn't want that. Who in the hell are they to tell me what I want to do I'm the paying customer.

I was all for holding out content to get it right. I am not for changing the basic of the game with a lame ppromise to "add it later at some point maybe if the moons full"

mythic has bad habit of not carrying through on promised fixs (hey any mids out there still waiting on the mid love patch?)

I'd like to thank the developer for talking strait and showing me that these are permant CHANGES and not just delayed contentfixes or work arounds.

I personally think seeing cities defended by thier own races with 10% or 15% allies from other races was going to be very unique.

I may still play depending on reports from beta but  think  mythic    may be pulling a fast on with it's maybe later promises.

What do you think?

The best post I have seen on this was one where WoW launched with 3 capital cities, and what, 8 classes?

They warned you 2 1/2 months before launch. This isn't a bait and switch, if you want that, go play AoC, DnL, or Vanguard. Otherwise, stop being suck a spoiled troll.

WoW is primarily a PVE game so I am not sure it is a good idea to draw parallels from there.

I think from a term of choice and space, it does. WoW, perhaps, offered less at launch than WAR will. Plus it offers a pvp based end game engrained. Seems better in text doesn't it? The main point being, they warned you, all of you, what they chose to do. Please don't bash a game for being straight forward. I won't, even though I have no intention to play the first 6 months.

They are already better than funcom without a launch...

WoW is an old game though and it was entering a MMORPG market with different expecations at the time.  I do not think it is a good idea to try to compare and contrast WoW's earlier years with the launches of upcoming MMORPG's.

As for not playing the first six months we share the same philosophy in waiting for the dust settle before moving in to try a MMORPG.  But for those hoping that the rest of the cities would be in six months post launch may need to watch the recent podcast.

Actually, I think the WoW launch is a great point of comparison. Even at 4 years old, few games have captured in a year what wow captured at launch, their main problem being the log in servers. The rest of the game ran fine, this was continued by Lord, and a few others. There are also many, if not all MMO's that release with less content than wow did at launch, look as DnD or AoC. WoW set a decent standard, I don't even like the game, but it raised expectations.

If WAR can release with more territory, classes, and at least as much content as WoW did at launch, it is a noteworthy acheivement. At least one with more to boast than AoC. Funcom couldn't even fess up to having 2/3 of core systems unfinished.

Do I wish the other cities where there? Of course I do. Do I wish the other classes where there? Of course I do. But no amount of whining and complaining is going to change the fact that they arent there. Either decide your going to play the game anyway or not. Stop beating a dead horse.

Agreed. Bait and switch means they got your ass in the store, and either "sold out" of what you were looking for, or tried to upsell you to a point of denying you the advertised product. This happens the SAME DAY.

I they warn you two months in advance, it's not B&S, especially on the internet where you know it 5 minutes after they announce it.

Example: The SWG CU was not bait and switch, they told us it was coming 5-6 months ahead. The SWG NGE happened 2 weeks (without warning) and was announced the day after a $25 expansion went live. THAT was bait and switch.

So, The OP and his supporter should simply grow up, and stfu.

1) Levels.

I find levels okay. I would just like a system that allows you to pick up other professions (Ryzom) or allows you to drop skill points to pick up another profession (SWG 2003-2005)

2) Loot based economies

This depends on how the game was envisioned. Some games are crafting centered (EvE) while others are loot centered (WoW). If you don't care to develop a deep system of crafting, or if you question your players dedication to crafting, for the love of god please loot.

3) Simplicity

People have different, and conflicting ideas of what a challenge is..For Lineage 2, WoW Epic players, and old SWG Jedi, the challenge was the endless grind. I don't necessarily consider this a challenge (but, I would never do it, so it's a self challenge). The one thing you need to get over is the player guide. Communities love to post guides. They make even the most "challenging" thing rudimentary.

4) XP penalties for grouping

Agreed.

5) Boring linear gameplay

Agreed. I never ran the Jedi grind, but I loved hunting groups, no matter what their reason. There is a myth out there that spin groups were only for the J-grind, but I found myself there pretty often to try out every profession, help level a guildie, and then as a doc to help the others and get hides. It got pretty hairy sometimes too! Our choice had rewards, and it was fun.

6) FANTASY!

Agreed.

7) Official forums

I like official forums. I do not like scouring the internet for a place to offline chat with current players of a game, or moreover, the company to whom I am paying money. Tabula Rasa decided forums were not necessary. They also decided that a heart, soul, and story was also something to leave on the cutting room floor.

8) Instancing(from bloodytv and I agree)

Agreed. I didn't mind RoTW. But, as you said. Even their instances were large enough to handle multiple groups. Chances are they could have pulled off the entire expansion with higher spawn rates.

9) Small Scale PvP

Battlegrounds, arenas, and the likes all start out fun, and can still be fun on occasion, but eventually just turn into another form of dungeon grinding. Small scale instanced pvp takes away from the feeling of fighting in a larger conflict and is incredibly repetitive. Remove small scale PvP and give us a reason to take part in world PvP!

Dunno what to say on this one. PvP in my experience has always been greater numbers win (period). Sometimes I thought the battleground would be great. I will never know though. I prefer the numbered battleground for FPS games since Quake 3 Fortress (2002).

I know I have more but thats all I can think of right now. Add on or comment as you wish.

Good post...

I guess what I am saying is I agree with you. I don't see how f2p would work with Ryzom.

Item mall for Ryzom is ridicilous - everyone knows that.

When i said FREE PLAY - i mean Anarchy Online type. Perhaps you dont know how it works, so let me explain.

Anarchy online released 3 (or 4) expansion packs. Basic anarchy Online is free. Everything included in expansions is off limit. This means

1.You can level to half o
