TOR Founding Member email - What a Joke
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 1/19/12 2:41:41 AM
The monty grab is standard operating proceedure for MMOs and such.. it's their timing that is off. I get most people are renewing in the next few days, but they just let a game breaking... nah ... game KILLING patch destroy what little value PVP had in the game. Had this not all happend in this time window, people would probably thing a silly title would be cool. But considering they were having such a mass amount of canceled subs flooding through they outright HID the cancel options in the account page, (Looks like they removed the thread on the official forums about it.. ha)
Don't get me wrong, I was a supporter of the game, up until this morning, I still was. But Bioware screwed up. Bad. Real Bad. Not just on PVP, but they proved they don't have the balls to take action, or refuse to take responsibility for these screw ups. There's a lot more wrong than just the massive PVP issue, which is what's getting all the attention right now. I think it is just bad timeing, and bad taste. Then again, good on them for trying, but they'll need a lot more than a sh*tty "Founder" title to get a lot of people to resub to the game.
(And for the record, I did cancel today in protest, and again, I was a player and supporter of this game, had high hopes, but they continue to choose to ignore 15 years of MMO history in every dip-sh*t decision they make.)

Not sure if the timing on this is priceless.. or just plain sad.

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Incoming Patch Highlights
News Discussion « General Discussion 1/13/12 4:54:09 PM
It is a fair priority, and it's not just a mechanic for HIGH END players.
Basically, the game as it sits today has the most worthless crafting ever.. UNLESS.. You're Biochem. So basically what's happening, rather than improving the usefulness of other crafting professions, lets just go ahead and make them ALL useless.

What a shame I wasted all my time leveling on the lesser faction. |

The lvl 50's who've exploited Ilum for top end gear and have enjoyed a couple weeks of non-challenged pvp supremecy will rip my face apart every time, it happens, all I can hope is now that they've maxed out everything, they'll go away out of boredom. But, it is the way things are, life is unfair, we all get over it. HOWEVER...ANY.. (and I do mean ANY) Sorcerer will kill me.. Doesn't matter level, doesn't matter anything. There is a reason they are the most over played class, and it is because they are the most... 'magical' .. (cause I can't say Over powered, cause everybody playing one loses their mind..) And it's not just me, I play with an equal level, equal geared Jedi Sage, heal spec, and he'll drop damn near instantly to a Sorcerer as well. So, guess the point is.. To Hell With Sorcerers? not sure.. lost my thought process.. back to dying to over geared Imperials.. |

SWTOR's biggest current issue - Combat Responsiveness
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/26/11 6:24:29 PM
It is definately noticable. I also notice losing target.. A LOT. I feel like I suffer twice as much being a melee class. I watch the wife with her Smuggler, being ranged, the sluggish'ness that is PVP doesn't effect her as much, as she doesn't have to worry about keeping range, being kited all over the place, etc. She can just hunker down and fire off as much as she wants, 90% of the time, people outright ignore her as she just systematically fires on people. As a Jedi Knight Guardian, I've given up on PvP in the game. Sure it's cute to sheild my friend and run around in circles for awhile, but that's mostly what it becomes. The non-dimishing CC is a problem. The overall inability to catch people (why do people seem to always be faster on foot than you?) and just the pure delay or 'canceling' of abilities at random makes playing a melee class entirely pointless.
Until something is acknowledged and adressed by Bioware in the realm of PVP Performance and balance, that half of the game doesn't exist for me. Not worth the aggrevation, and not worth re-rolling something ranged just to play with borderline acceptible performance.

The wannabe SWTOR poll interim score has been tallied
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/21/11 3:13:02 AM
I'd give it about an 81/100. And I feel that is generous but justifiable. It is a great game, not without its flaws, quirks and very annoying bugs, but very solid, and fairly well polished for day one. How long the fun lasts has yet to be seen. Leveling questlines and cool stories are fine, but what happens when we're all lvl 50's fondling lightsabers for fun in the Fleet Station?
Where I'd review separately is Bioware / EA or any mix of the two who are responsible for the following: Servers. While they are stable, haven't crashed or lagged to what I have seen, they are mis-managed in their population control. While some servers have 3 hour queues, others are LIGHT or STANDARD. Simply locking certain servers, or creating even the shoddy 'World Pass' type system from FF11 (which would allow established players to invite their friends to high pop servers) would have been advised. The current situation, too many idiots who got the game today seemed to roll on these already stressed servers.. Not sure why..
Customer Support (or lack of.) I won't go into detail, I know they are probably swamped, but hell, hire temps, staff a few dozen college kids or something to answer support tickets and phone calls, at least for the first month leading up to and following launch so you don't appear to be shitting on your fledgling customer base.
Those 2 issues alone would get a failing grade. And don't reply to this post about the queue issue with direct hate at me, I've sat in the 3 hour queues, I know.. I also work in IT, manage all kinds of servers on a daily basis, I understand technical limitations, believe me. But when you have a million people all trying to do the same thing at once, you design ways to accomodate the flow properly, you don't just let it all happen. Now, if every single server currently live was full and had queues, I'd have no gripe, but there are far too many that are light or moderate load that new folks should have been funneled to.
Anyhow, off the rant. I still say, good game, hopefully gets better with time. 81/100. |

It is a good bit of fun. My wife who is a complete non-(or dare I say, ANTI) gamer, has registered over 2 days played time since her start date a few days in from Early Access. She loves the game. Her first real MMO, she's picked up on it quick, has managed to get ot 20 all by herself (so proud!) It is entirely astounding to see her come in the house, fire up her computer excited to get on a game. I believe that kind of conversion in a person alone speaks for the quality and the enjoyment of the game. Yes, it is very familiar in playstyle to every MMO I've played before. I've tried to get her to play other games in the past, she's never looked back or cared about them after the initial play attempt. I just believe the story driven, voiced over presntation is what the total draw is here. She actually seems to care about her character and what's going on in the world because I think the game presents itself as a more personable and believable experience. People I'm sure are space bar mashing through every bit of dialog, and I feel sorry for them. I really think, while maybe not suitable for all places in an MMO, the voice over adds a level of depth and character that has been oh so lacking from the genre.
I personally think the game is great. I have my doubts for the future, because Bioware designed themselves into a very tricky corner to have to continue to develop quality voiced over content continuously, but for the mean time we are having a blast! |

General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/20/11 7:27:18 PM
Everybody wants to be as close to 'iconic' Starwars characters as they can. And let's face it, most the cool most memorable characters are the bad guys.. Darth whatever.. Boba Fett, etc.. So people immediately move to that option.
On top of that, general rule of any PVP game.. "The Ugly Races Win" Previous games.. Horde, Destruction, etc.. Whatever the ugly races are always prosper in PvP. |

Bioware needs to lock certain servers, seriously. 500 person queue at 11am? If new people are joining in today, funnel them into new servers, if playing on existing over-full servers with their friends is important, they should have come up with some world pass type of thing like old FF11 for existing people to invite their lay joining friends. Shadow Hand doesn't want any new players. We Don't Like You. Get lost people. |

First wave complete - server pops all low/few medium. This could be major fail.
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/17/11 3:20:55 PM
Early Afternoon, 30+ minute queues... (US Servers) It'll be impossible come this evening.
Can't say one way or the next if the game is a failure or a success, those things don't really become evident till 6 months out. HOWEVER - the amount of curiosity seekers and those on the 'free' early access time can prove there is extreme interest. How many of them are here by next weekend will be the real test. (Hopefully, enough a__ho__s roll elsewhere and get off my server!) |

What was the point of the pre-order if this is the case.
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/15/11 2:58:49 AM
Originally posted by Loke666 ^^^ This. I'm one of these people stuck waiting on others. I was first wave, first day, I've played so little it is painful, waiting for my wife's account to get invited as well as 2 friends. So, if you're worried about your friends out leveling you and not helping, blah blah etc etc.. they aren't good friends anyways. Besides, all this complaining and people freaking out over how the staggered thing is working is just stupid. Next week, nobody will even care, it'll all be over, everybody will be playing (and or waiting in queues..) and life goes on. Because you don't get to play for 1-3 days isn't the end of the world, and really, the 1-3 days isn't giving anybody such an advantage that makes ANY difference at all. Everybodty who started early has to wait for other people to catch up anyways. So, point of pre-order? Well, other than securing a CE version, I don't know. But the promise of "UP TO" 5 days early acces should not have been a primary reason.. Bioware could have let people in at 11:58pm on the 19th and still been well within that 'promise'.. so, count your lucky stars you're in before the 20th at all, shut up and enjoy the game.

Yep, and everybody that is still waiting would grade it a lot lower out of RAAAAAGE! Granted, I think after yesterday, they proved the servers worked, everything was fine, thet should have just let the masses in.. But 'eh, I'm not Bioware, so maybe my logic need not apply. But, I can't complain, I was first wave invited, but it sucks for me cause my Wife's account, and my 2 gaming friends are stuck waiting for god know what wave to get in.
So even though I can log in and play, can't play my character of choice having to wait for others. So.. yay.. crafting...?????? (*yawn*) c'mon Bioware, let the people in! |

I'd expect by Thursday, they'll just let all remaining pre-orders go at it. The servers have been up, no problems so far that I've encountered. Certainly not many people running around, but that's OK, I still think this whole staggered release thing is just so they don't end up with a queue / server crash fiasco. They probably set a goal number of people to let in today, watch how leveling, logging in, etc progressed, had a nice "high-five" session in the office then decided to call it a success and wait to see how the player base and next wave can ruin their day tomorrow.
I'm in software development (not games.. but it's all the same) and a small controlled environment for taking a new product live is always better than saying "HERE YOU GO EVERYBODY" and having the shit explode on you.
I'll bet everybody who pre-ordered will be in and playing by Thursday. I'm sure Bioware folks feel confident in how theyr structure is holding up to let it happen. Also, I really hope they don't add more servers. Let the queues begin if they must, but no sense in pulling a RIFT and over doing it for the one week it'll be a disaster, just to have 70% of your servers be empty later. Try to funnel as many people into as few of servers as possivle to ensure in the future, there will be people to do stuff with. |
