 Thanks for clearing the air...

MMORPG.com is giving away free closed beta keys for Dragonica over on the homepage.  The screenshots looked very "cutesy" ... you should go check it out

Think about it for a second F2play games are comprised of two types of people, those that will pay and those that wont. But the costs are still the same to support both types of players. So the game has to be designed in such a way that those that are willing to pay to experience all the game has to offer will have to carry the weight financially of the free player base. That means the game is not designed for a paying player to be able to fork over 15 a month and get everything the game has. That paying player has to fork over 2 to 3 to 4 times that.

The entire F2P industry designs a game around micro charges, stop and think about that for a second, every aspect of the game is designed around parting you and your money as often as possible.  Every game play and design decision is made in a way that holds back some part of the experience that requires payment. The end result being that at some point paying players wake up from the fog of tossing 50 to 60 to 100 dollars a month at a sub par product and finally quiting. Their really nothing more than shopping malls wrapped in a game engine mixed in with a casino style play model. The house always wins baby. I havent given one cent to these guys and never will.

So lets review. Play (up until this point anyways) amature titles for free and miss out on the high end systems and gear. Or pay 4 times what you should to have access to the whole sub par game. Everyone loses except the developer and publisher who get to make a budget MMO and potentially enjoy the same revenue stream as a quality pay to play game.

I agree.  Whats more is that F2P games are making a killing right now, and its gotten to the point where a it doesn't even make sense economically to create a traditional MMO unless you are going to pull in a million subs because you can make twice the amount of money with 1/4'th the players

try-hard troll is trying to hard

It's basically sounds like a cut-and-paste MMO reskinned into its own IP.  Cool lore isn't enough to draw and retain a playerbase.  Work on some unique features, gameplay elements and/or content.

loool! i read every post and I have to say, epic payout at the end of this thread with your post.  You just saved the thread... bravo!!

Sci-Fi in general, Fantasy in an MMO... voted Sci-Fi just cause I'm on a Sci-Fi kick right now..

I really hope Blizzard's new project isn't a microtransaction game...

and couldn't do squat.  That's entertainment...  I should have been able to kill their NPCs (or at least die trying), break into their bank, set fire to their buildings, etc...,  I shouldn't have to be in a clan in order to do any of these things (some of which you can't do, like rob the bank, even if you're in a clan).  If the empty hamlet belonged to my race/alliance, there should be consequences to my actions (except maybe robbing their bank, if I'm a good thief - how would they know it was me?).  If it belonged to another faction, I should get alignment points for causing mayhem there.

  • Can I build a house? No
  • Can I set up a farmstead or mine? No
  • Can I have my own store, either brick-and-mortar or online? No - I can only spam the trade channel.
  • Do I have to be in a group in order to kill most mobs?  Yes
  • Can I rob an unprotected bank? No
  • Do I have to be in a clan in order to  particpate in most activies (sieging, building, etc...)? Yes
  • Can my clan build their hamlet or city anywhere they want?  No
  • Can my clan build their hamlet or city any way they want? No

So, what are the sandbox aspects of Darkfall?  Crafting?  Politics? That's it?  Those mechanics exist in most other games, too, and done better (auction houses or individual shops, for example).

I'm starting to think Aventurine's definition of sandbox is "game that's not finished yet"

Solo-friendly doesn't equal sand-box.  Do you have to be in a clan to participate in sieging... gosh I sure hope so, because a 1 man siege will look quite silly.  UO would answer most of those questions you asked in a similar way, and it was still very much a sand-box.  I think that on a scale from Dropped-into-a-completely-empty-world-total-anarchy-clusterf*** and Follow-the-sheeple-in-front-of-you, Darkfall is infinitely closer to pure sand-boxism then 90% other games on the market.

lol attic you're getting anti-trolled so hard its quite amusing to watch.

Atlantica Online.

Before that it's only games that are 5+ years old.  DAoC, EQ, AC, UO.

Still waiting for another...

New player here (potentially)... if I buy this steam dealio for 9.99 and get everything, do I also get a free month included??

Thx for help

They are having problems with only a limited amount of people with the game right now.

Imagine if they opened the floodgates to the 300,000+ people that applied for beta.

Not true.  This game does fine without CC.  The only time a CC would be valuable is 1v1.  In any group battle, running isn't an option.  It's very difficult to get away from a group of people who know what they're doing.

I think the addition of CC would take away from the overall game.

I'd double click on it and run it, just to be safe.

Open Beta?

In the beginning it didnt' have safe zones you could be killed right inside the city.  The addition of the God like Teleporting Guards was the response to that.    UO once the ganking started was the worse game ever.   It was probably safer to walk around in a real medievil period than it was in UO and thats sad.  Hell walking the streets in the ghetto is safer.

You couldn't adventure, you couldn't mine, you couldn't fish, you couldn't do anything other than pray the far off place you were hoping to reach didn't have stealth pkers waiting.    They implimented systems to help balance it but the 'tagging' system failed ultimately because a real PK didn't care he had friends or alts for his activities that needed to be done in the city.

Then Origins made the worse mistake ever they created shards for each server that you could walk between.   Bad people got stuck in Felucia until they could figure out how to realign themselves and good people oculd travel back n forth.  They split the player base and destroyed the 'eco system' of the game.  Granted at the time no other game had ever gone through this problem before but still it sucked.

Atleast dev's are somewhat learning from their mistakes.   Perma-Stealth & FFA PVP games do not mix.

Oh stop being so dramatic.  It's obvious UO and (probably) DF aren't for you.  I played UO for a good many years starting on release and I was a newbie for a good portion of those.  I did everything, from mine, fish, kill mobs, etc.  I had the time of my fuggin life.  I never had an adrenaline rush in a video game quite like being chased through the woods by a red with your pack full of resources or money from killing mobs.  Everything in pre UO:R was so perfect, i could just about cry thinking about the memories I had.

People are people. Greeks are no more passionate than any other people, and they're no worse at customer service.

...Do you live in a bubble or town of 200?  People are different.  I can drive 2 hours north to Chicago and notice a huge difference in the way people act and interact with people.  Yes it's a generalization, not all people in Chicago act a certain way, just like not all greeks are bad at customer service.  But if its the way the culture is, the way they bring up their children, there will be a big difference, generally speaking.

The beta is already out.  You sign up at the website www.darkfallonline.com/cb

If they invite you to participate in the beta, they will email you.  Open beta is TBA.
