I've been listening to "PC Gaming is dying!" for about 20 years now.  Times change, technology changes, but here's the console vs PC facts that have never changed:

  • It costs about 10 times as much to game on a PC as a console
  • The above point means that PC gamers take their hobby more seriously that console gamers, because they spent a great deal of $$$ on it
  • Which means that good PC games tend to have far more depth than good console games, because PC gamers' idea of a good value for the money is totally different than console gamers'
  • Graphics, sounds, and other technical effects are always better on a good gaming PC, unless it's right at the start of a new console cycle, during which time they'll be about even.
  • Some game genres unsuitable for a console controller (RTS, anything that requires text input)
  • ... and most importantly, new genres and new styles of gameplay *always* appear on the PC first, then make their way to the console if they're successful, with the notable exception of the Wii (which is why it's doing so well, IMO.  Console gamers have never seen true innovation since everything prior was tried and tested in a PC game first)

So, yes, I'm sure we'll see a good console MMO eventually.  There's already been some attempts and they'll get better - the market is just bigger.  But PC MMOs will still be in a different category as a console MMO will be casual almost by definition, and while that might suck away a lot of WoW's thunder (something will, sooner or later) there's plenty of MMOs out right now that are plugging away just fine and don't cater to casuals at all.

And, whatever the Next Big Gaming Thing is, I'm 100% sure we'll see it on a PC first.  It's held true for nearly everything so far, no reason the trend shouldn't continue.

This is becoming less and less true.  Now that consoles are using powerful hardware and use aa/af and hdr etc etc.... not to mention play @ 1920x1080.

So to play Fallout 3 for example and make it look as nice as it does on say a 360, I have to have a monitor that supports 1080p, aa/af on around 4x/aa/8xaf, 3-4 gb's of ram if you're on vista... at least a 9800gt and a powerful dual core.

That price tag adds up real fast, and my 2 year old computer (e6400 c2d, 8800gts 320, 3 gb ram) can't run it @ those settings even at only 1280x1024.... but a two year old 360 can.

LOL! Maverick you can't be serious.......

Only MMOs? Did you forget RTS? hell most of the games on PC have awesome Mod communities that keep PC gaming far ahead of console gaming in replay value. these days almost every good console game also shows up on PC (with the exception of madden 09, god i hate EA) .

If it wasn't for Madden my Xbox would have two inches of dust on it atm.

I'm completely serious.... Most blockbuster PC Games come out for the consoles as well if they didn't launch there first.  Your starting to see strategy games port to consoles now too.  Trust me it'll be twice as bad with the next gen of consoles.

A gaming PC just doesn't continue to make sense anymore.  The only games that are really PC specific anymore are MMO's and building a $1300 computer ever 2 years to just play those one or two games doesn't make fiscal sense.

I've been building pc's forever now and I think that's the one reason why I still build a gaming machine.  I just really enjoy the process, but when you're trying to code for 1000's of different hardware/software configs.... it all starts to come together.  You will always have an operating system that is not built around gaming holding you back.  It's so much easier and not to mention cheaper, for a company to develop a game around a central system like an xbox or a ps3.

Don't forget the skellies!

Seriously though...

It's not that big of a deal if they want to do minimal marketing/PR for their game.  What isn't o.k. is a lack of professionalism.  Now before anyone starts jumping up and down and says... company x didn't do y either.   Makes no difference who does it.  It's still bad.

Things like NOT updating your Official web-stie with current information.  Especially the only specific Release Date EVER given out for the game in it's entire development history.  (And no, putting it in the news section of the forums is NOT the same.   Come on people, this isn't that hard to use a bit of common sense here.  Just ask yourself... If it was my game, would I put the Release Date on the Home Page?  Pretty sure there is only one HONEST answer to that question).

Things like NOT updating the FAQs for features that have been known to not make it for Release, or are cut entirely for quite a long while now.  Just one example... Prestige classes:  that was said quite awhile ago that won't make release... still in the FAQ.   There are more, but you get the idea.  Sure, it's quite expected that the FAQ will lag behind in this respect... but when it's months, and some much older than that... then it's not very professional.

Things like NOT making any kind of comment about the re-scheduling of OPEN BETA... unless someone still thinks they will be making their previous schedule of  "the open beta phase is scheduled to end early in December".

Things like NOT having any finalized information on Direct Download, Hardware Requirements, Billing, Subscription, etc.

Those to me add up to not being professional with your product.  I don't care if you don't want to market traditionally.   I don't care if you aren't that big of a company.  I don't care what the excuse it... it is not asking too much to expect that a company conduct themselves in  a professional manner.   The same as I expect from any other company.

This rant will probably put me back on the troll label again... but so be it.  It's fine to be a fan for a game, but it's also o.k. to expect the company to treat you will a bit of respect and professionalism.  They need us a whole lot more than we need them.

Honestly why does it matter if they lack "professionalism or not?"  They owe you NOTHING!  You haven't paid this company one penny so it doesn't really matter what they do with their site or their faq now does it?

Repost: Ok now for the Darkfall community update:

As you know we’ve been conducting the first phases of the Darkfall beta, specifically the hardware configuration testing. This is where we test that Darkfall runs on most hardware configurations without problems, and we also test the absolute basics. We’ve been putting the testers through the motions: they download the client, log in, patch, create a character, enter the game and run around long enough to make sure that they’re not experiencing any weirdness and that everything is running smoothly. All this needs to be done so that in the next phases of testing a greater number of testers won’t experience any problems with the basics and so they can focus on other important testing. These have turned out to be very productive and useful testing phases. During this time we’ve addressed various hardware compatibility problems, compatibility issues with programs running simultaneously with Darkfall, we identified and corrected some patcher issues, some login server problems, and various small issues around the game world. At the same time, it’s business as usual with our internal testing.

Let me give you an idea of what’s been happening during these first testing phases: Right now, the entire Darkfall world is up on its servers. It’s being kept up most of the time. We’ve been running a methodical and functional testing environment. We started the hardware testing with the minimum of options enabled. Since then we’ve been enabling and disabling features needed to be tested. This is done so that we have the minimum noise in case something happens on the server side and we need to isolate it. We’ve been wiping characters as often as once a day, usually within 2-3 days. This is because we’re not testing character development yet, and we’ve been making some optimizations in the way that things are stored. We’ve been enabling features gradually and we’re to the point where most are enabled. Some of the things we still have deactivated are mobs outside the starting areas, most of the dungeons, most of the clan city building locations. Another thing worth mentioning is that during testing, testers have options and tools available to them that they won’t have during the retail stage of Darkfall.

Our goal during this testing phase is that the important things work perfectly as we move all the way down to the polish during the subsequent testing phases. The game had always been in a state to be run in its entirety, but this would have been a huge waste of resources and would have hindered this early testing. This is where Darkfall differs from other MMOs. We could have easilly had it running full featured if this was a railroad game, but it’s not. Darkfall is a sandbox game and there are infinite paths that players can follow. This is not some quest driven game where you could go through the motions quest after quest until you’re ready to actually play a few months down the road. You actually play Darkfall from day one. So as you understand, there’s no single path of testing. Player behavior in Darkfall varies wildly and we need to try and predict all eventualities.

This is what has been happening until today. The reason we’re mentioning all this is to familiarize those of you who aren’t in the beta already with our testing philosophy, and to catch the community up with what’s been going on.

Moving along, and we’re about two weeks behind schedule announcing this, but we’re going to start opening up the beta to more and more testers on or around November 10th to coincide with the next phases of our server deployment. We will be enabling a lot of the features we currently have disabled – as needed and dictated by our testing needs. Again I must stress that this beta period’s purpose is for us to get Darkfall ready for release so we’ve been operating under strict directives. Having said that, I can’t help mentioning, that even in this current stage of testing, the game is a lot of fun and we hope to see all of you enjoying it while helping us test during these next phases.

Thanks for reading

I highlighted some things in Red because I believe it's VERY misleading. it makes it seem like beta is actually has ALOT of people in it.. or why would he need to stay "aren't in the beta already".. just seems kind of dodgy..

The Yellow is just.. sort of useless information as it doesn't help anyone's case..

Sort of impossible to do, you need ALOT of testers to see how they behave..

I am not an avid follower of darkfall but your post is so pointless I had to respond.

The red is not misleading. Just because you interpret it that way doesn't make it so.

Read it again.

"Who aren't already in the Beta"  Infers that MORE people are IN the beta than AREN'T in the beta.

What???  All it's saying is that if you aren't in the beta this is how we operate our beta.  Stop trying to stretch things to your side that can't be stretched.

Backlash is a really cool mechanic.  You have to weigh the options of whether to keep casting and hope for the extra damage or use meltdown and keep yourself safe.

I killed myself a couple of times taking chances in RVR but if your dieing in pve... you're just not paying attention or something.

Well as usual this site is full of trolls vs. fanbois.  I'll try and give an unbiased review of my admittedly limited play experience during the preview weekend.

First off let say that I had been looking forward to  this game for quite sometime, DAoC was amazing and I was super stoked to get to play WAR.  I'll sum it up in catagories as it's easier for me to do it that way.

Graphics-

The graphics were better than what I expected to see.  I'm used to seeing screenshots for games and then once you get into the game realizing it was really... really touched up.  The graphics looked better than the majority of the screens I have seen on the website and that was refreshing.  I keep hearing the rumor that the final gfx system isn't implemented yet so only room for improvement I suppose.  So for people that say it looks like WoW I'd have to say that while artisically it's similar... it doesn't look cartoony one bit.

Public quests-

I played as a bright wizard so my view on these may be skewed.  I absolutely loved them.  Being able to just walk into a zone and fight a quest with a whole lot of random people is pretty sweet, and I can't believe it's never been done before.  I liked how even if I did the most damage I didn't necessarily win the top prize... or even one at all.  It gives everyone a chance at loot... which is quite refreshing.  For people complainging that you can't solo them.... I think thats the point....

Animations-

Wow big miss for the team.  They are really quite poor.  I don't know if it's server or client optimization but effects and animations are going off all over the place, and never seem quite "together".  I also can't ever seem to launch successive spells w/o hearing this ability is not yet ready even if it is.  That infuriated me to no end.  I hear it's quite bad on the melee side as well.  This needs to be addressed now, as I feel it makes combat feel slower than it should be.

AI-

The AI is the status quo everyone is used to.  Nothing that impressive here, but pathfinding needs to work yesterday.

Performance-

It ran pretty well on my e6400, 8800gts 320 and 3 gigs of ram.  Lag was a problem at times which causes synchro problems, but past that it was definately good.

PVP-

Now to the meat and potatoes of the game.  I didn't get to do much open field rvr as destruction just camped outisde of the town but I did get to play the scenarios and found them to be very enjoyable.  I guess I'm on the outside as far as my opinion on this goes, but I like that fact that there isn't a ton of CC.  I'm a mage if a huge orc runs up to me I expect to be cut down.... hes 5 times my size and wants my head... he should have it.  I really like the scenarios in the human starting area, however thehigh elf one with the big nuke that goes off is annoying.  In my experience somehow destruction just owns everytime and every minute I'm running from the big explosion.  It's annoying.

Class Balance-

In my play I didn't really notice any particularly over the top weak or powerful classes.  Some people would complain about getting aoe'd to hell and back by bright wizards, but if you're dumb enough to stand all packed together and let me rain death then that's your own fault.  Like I said before I haven't seen much cc so the tides change quickly depending on quite a few factors.

I've seen zergs get pushed back by half the people just because they were smarter players, and I've seen the zerg run over me.  It all depends on the situation and who you have with you.

Overall I really enjoyed the preview weekend.  A friend of mine who was on the AoC train for awhile and plays WoW was really impressed and decided to go ahead and pre-order as well.  I'm definately gonna pick it up when it releases and can't wait to see destruction on the field.  Any questions, comments, criticisms welcome.
