You can guess ESO's population by comparing the activity on reddit, twitch etc. Right now it looks dreadful. GW2 had easily 3+ times the activity 4 days after release, and GW2 is a B2P game so ESO's retention will be lower in the first few months. I don't think it will be long until the transition to B2P/F2P.
OP you aren't missing anything. Zenimax's hype machine is working really well right now. As we have seen in the past, hype leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering. Get your popcorn ready and enjoy the show :)

Skipping both since I'm just tired of themeparks. Wildstar is too much of a WoW clone and ESO has one of the worst combat systems in MMO history and casualized PvP (PvP for people who hate/are scared of PvP). Both have the same old WoW questing that got old 5+ years ago.

 

Only MMOs on my list currently are Camelot Unchained and EQNext. Until then I will enjoy PoE and DAoC freeshards.

I expected

- meaningful PvP progression

- a not terrible combat system

- real PvP (killing real players) and not PvDoor PvEmptyKeeps

- having the option to PvP competitively (like DAoC's 8v8) or casually (zerg vs zerg)

- zone-wide kill spam

- realm pride

Sadly ESO has none of those :(

Both will flop. The age of themepark MMOs is over.

Unless you all get ccd or get back to back cced.

In both cases you were outplayed. Time to improve your skills / teamwork / learn to interrupt casters. 

 

DAoC is about tactics. A great group can destroy a mediocre zerg. In most other games it's about who has the most people. That's one of the reasons why they fail.

Those who can press the purge button or have teammates that can press the demezz button?

Genesis is full almost 24/7 so there is a huge demand for old school RvR (but still has many server problems), Uthgard is getting revamped and will relaunch soon, and there are a couple more projects that started recently after Genesis' success (one of them with an ex-DAoC dev, see the DAoC subreddit for more info).
I like zergs. I don't like games like ESO and GW2 that are ONLY about zerging. I like games like DAoC where zerging is an option, but you can also do competitive group vs group, 1v1 etc.

I dont think the ESO zones are too big for what the huge amount of people it can handle. Do you know how many can join such a pvp campagne ?

According to the wiki around 2k players in total. The zones are way too big and open (no milegates / mountains that funnel players into chokepoints). There is no way you can get good action with so few players.

Both are aimed to casual players. Both are about mindless zerging and taking empty keeps (PvDoor, PvGuards). ESO has better optimization but a way worse combat system. Both have uninteresting PvP progression. ESO's zones feel too empty (way too large compared to the people that it can handle).
Path of Exile, D2 are the best ARPGs of all time.

Payment type is ALWAYS a factor in an MMO's success. Why should it have the same business model as past ES games? It's a completely different kind of game.

With THAT combat/UI/animations It is pretty much exclusively targeted to ES fans.

I signed up the first day of the beta sign ups back in February 2013 I think? I was actually pretty excited because the PvP sounded like DAoC 2 and I have been waiting for a DAoC 2 since it was killed by ToA and NF in 2003-4. That only lasted until I played it a few months ago. The combat/UI/animations are the worst I have seen in my 13 years of playing MMOs. The leveling from 1 to10 was painful (I wanted to give up by level 6-7) but I endured it so I can at least try the PvP. The PvP turned out to be very well optimized (no lag even in huge battles), but it was ruined by the horrible combat system. It was 100% mindless zerging (the same problem as in GW2), and the PvP progression seems more like the WoW honor point system than DAoC.

I honestly don't know.

 

MMO players don't like it because of its terrible combat, animations, WoW-like questing.

ES fans don't like it because they wanted ES 6 with COOP.

PC players don't like it because the UI and skill system are made for consoles.

Console players don't like it because of an extra subscription.

Competitive PvPers don't like that the PvP is casualized just like GW2.

Raiders don't like it because of no raids.

P2P fans don't like the pre-order bonuses (which makes it slightly P2W) and cash shop.

 

So who is left?

Didn't we agree that a great story wasn't enough to save SWTOR? What makes you think it will save ESO? You still need a good endgame and as of yet we have seen absolutely nothing about it.

B2P/F2P are "Paywalls" that wrench your wallet open in order for you to pay MORE for what P2P gives you with a small fee of 14.95/month for unlimited access.

B2P/F2P is a scam when it comes to MMORPGs. Especially in a game as competitive as UO and DAOC.

You sound confused. P2P is a paywall. P2W is a paywall. F2P is not a paywall. F2P will always be the most consumer friendly with B2P following it.

What you and the devs don't realize is that DAoC needs a big population to be fun. More people = more fun. F2P or B2P with a cosmetic / non-P2W cash shop would be the perfect business model for it.

If they really want to save DAoC they will release a classic server and change the business model to B2P/F2P. 

We all know that MMOs die or thrive from their endgame content. GW2 and SWTOR failed because of their weak endgame. WoW became the giant it is today because of its endgame.

 

Most players will hit max level within the first month. Then what? What will keep us playing (and paying)? Are there raids? Meaningful PvP progression a la DAoC?

 

Most importantly, why has Zenimax shown absolutely nothing about the endgame? All the media previews talk about the content from level 1 to 15 which most players will surpass within the first 1-2 days. Doesn't that make anyone else suspicious?
