Originally posted by A1x2e3l FFXI has collision detection and that was what 7 years ago when it first came out. I think a lot of developers are just lazy and don't want to do it. FFXI also had a complex aggro system it wasn't just if you were in range. Mobs aggroed by sight, sound, magic, smell. If a game would have FFXI aggro system and, Ryzom's mob AI and seasons I think it would be more immersive . But it seems that the Masses don't want a complex game they just want to keep it simple. Computers and networks are getting faster but yet MMO's aren't taking advantage of that. If FFXI and Ryzom had these features years ago why aren't any of the newer games adopting them? |

The thing about a lot of the newer zombie games is I just don't like their zombies. I'm old school and like Romero type zombies. But while zombies really aren't scary to me I still enjoy a good zombie movie or game. I wish there was a new good zombie survival horror game, RE5 was more action and there was ammo every 5 minutes in the game. There needs to be some sort of a Zombie Survival Horror RPG/MMORPG, or hell just a Survival Horror RPG/MMORPG coming out soon. It would make my day. Have it all open like TES games where you can run around and pretty much do anything you want. With a zombie type game I think something like PvMP would work if they tweak it out some. If they make it so you can be a monster where ever and not just in a specific zone it could make for some really awesome events. Im just getting tired of the same old ideas and same fantasy genres for RPGs.. Parasite Eve was one of my favorite games. I'd consider that to be a Survival Horror RPG, but it seems that nobody else wants to make games like this. |

It's the government man. They tried to do the Real ID thing but we all said screw that, so now there starting off small time with a bunch of gamers. If its a success then they will go on to bigger things then try to pass Real ID card again. |

Originally posted by wootin Hmm I never played that if you healed mobs got a free shot. We only played if you try to run away they get a free shot.. Also I don't ever remember that happening in any DnD computer game either. Maybe it was your Dm's rule or something but I never had DM have us play that way. I've played with quite a few people that played since AD&D and we never had that rule. The thing with Clerics is they were great fighters as well and could wear plate armor. I think WAR is the only MMO out there that has a class like that. Every other game healers are hella weak. I honestly don't see any other options besides HT + CC, if you don't have those everyone is just playing the role of DPS. Which IMO would be pretty lame if that is what everyone does. I'd rather have Tank, Spank, Healer than, Spank and pray nobody dies. And the idea of everyone being a kick ass jack of all trades seems lame to me.. I can see a rogue tank happening because they are an evasion tank an never get hit or maybe a mage that has some sweet spells to reduce dmg so they can tank. But the mage wouldn't also be a kick ass healer or nuker and the rogue wouldn't be doing crazy awesome dmg because they'd be busy trying to dodge attacks all the time. I guess I'm just a firm believer in people specializing in things or if they are a jack of all trades they are just mediocre at what they do. |

The key is to make more than one CC class so that if a person might not like one they might like the other. I always loved playing some sort of CC class, especially in games where they are needed a lot, you get parties quicker. |

[Poll] How to Change a Theme Park into a Sandbox

Originally posted by darkboaz Yeah FE was a hybrid. The skill based character progression and the crafting kinda made kinda sandboxy. To me sandbox = Skill based character progression, no classes, ability to build pretty much anything, pretty much anywhere you want. Your character or faction has influence on the game world , like I stated in my above post about creating laws and such. Basically the more things you as the gamer has control over the more sandbox it will be. The ultimate sandbox would have like one main starting city that sells only things to get you started. The rest of the game world is just terrain and mobs. It would be up to the players to create everything else. Some people might find that boring and think that the devs would be just lazy since there is no content. But if you the player is control over the content you get to make the content. Lets say that your a farmer and a pack of wolves migrated into your area and are killing your livestock. You post that you need help in the nearest player built city. Some adventurer is looking for work and see is comes by and kills the wolves for you and you pay him for their services. You basically just created a quest, but this type of quest in a theme park has no impact on the game world. But in a sandbox, it can make all the difference. If your livestock died and you couldn't sell them to get butchered then their could have been a food shortage in the game. Granted this type of game may not be possible because it would need to be so complex. You need migration patterns which has been done before, mobs need to be able to reproduce themselves, but if they all get killed a base amount of them will respawn. There has to be season changes and plants actually grow based on how much water they get. I could go on longer but I think you get the point. |

Originally posted by uquipu There are a few games out there but, I'll use Dawntide as an example since I know more about it. Its still rough around the edges but I'm enjoying the testing so far. But it has no levels, you get better at things by doing them like I stated in my post above. There are quests but you only get money and items since you don't gain xp in the game. The shovels and buckets and sand that person is talking about are things you can build. In Dawntide you can build your house pretty much anywhere. You can make stools chairs tables and many other things and you can pretty much put them anywhere and even make a tower of stools if you wanted to (lol which I did right before the wipe and the next testing phase begun).
You can build guild cities and if you're in control of the area you can create laws. Here is something from Dawntide's website. "A faction has the ability to set laws within its sphere of influence, for instance creating penalties in the forms of fines or exile for assault, murder, theft, harvesting the local resources without permission, etc. A player can always choose not to pay fines owed to a faction but doing so will result in exile – meaning that the player will be attacked by any guards in the area, NPCs will refuse to deal with him and he will be unable to build within land controlled by the faction. To avoid unintentionally breaking the law or factions switching laws around to attempt entrapment, a warning window will appear whenever a player is about to break the law." |

Starting off at max level is a bad idea for RPG's IMO. Getting new abilities, spells and all that jazz is part of the fun. Getting stronger and coming to an area again that kicked your ass and now you can defeat them, gives you a sense of accomplishment and that all your work paid off.. If you take out the levels and do a purely skill based game as in, I use my sword i get better at it and I get stronger I like that idea. This way it doesn't matter how good or bad I am with a sword I can still party with anyone. You don't need to be max level to travel anywhere from day 1. Get in a group to defeat harder mobs, or become stealthy in your travels. I think it would be quite boring to start off at max level and pretty much everything was easy for me to kill so that I'm able to travel anywhere. So basically you just want to cut out a bulk of the character progression and skip right to the end game. I've never been a max level character in any game I've played, it either took forever to get there or I got to bored with the game before then. But the most fun part to me of an RPG is leveling up my guy so thats also why I'm not in a hurry to get to end game. |

IMO the new greens should not be more powerful than the Rares you get in raids. They should have started again where the most powerful green left off. Same goes with the blues and purples. It just doesn't make any sense to me that you can get something more powerful so easily when before it was so hard to get. If you do things in the manner stated above, the people who don't need the greens can sell them they will get new gear when they start raids which will probably happen in a week anyways. I think people can go a week without getting new gear. The people that didn't do all the raids from WOTLK get all the new green and blues and its a win win situation. |

World of Warcraft: No Subscription Fee....at Some Point
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/01/10 10:29:29 AM
I find this funny, only because I'm pretty sure I read somewhere WoW was originally planned to be a F2P game at the start. I guess Blizz decided to sell mounts because they weren't making enough money. All those servers, and bandwidth, GM's and all sorts of other customer support can rack up the bucks for sure. Its either that or they are just greedy as hell which wouldn't surprise me one bit. I wonder when it will go F2P though, and why? They obviously still own the majority of the MMO players out there so they don't need to go F2P to get more subs. Maybe they aren't making enough money and they think they can make more buy doing an item shop only. Or it could be to keep people playing WoW while playing there new MMO that comes out and can make good money off both. |

Since WoW is so popular, what's the point of other MMORPG's still existing?

Originally posted by underoath01 Double ^^^^ this. There are quite a few people still out there that don't enjoy WoW. Plus no competition is bad, even though it may seem there is nobody really competing against WoW there is. And some games are actually making good money, more popular game doesn't always mean most profit. Just think of all the servers, bandwidth, GM's and stuff they have to pay for. I've also got a question,... If there was no other MMO's do you think WoW would be the game it is today? I'm guessing nope. |

Originally posted by emperorwings I played wow off and on over 2 and a half years for a total of 14 months subbed to it. I kept comming back only because friends played and wouldn't quit it to play some of the other games I enjoyed more.. But WoW didn't ruin anything for me, to be honest I'm having more fun testing Dawntide than that whole time I played WoW. While WoW may be polished that is the only thing it has going for it IMO. Lack of polish in games is something I can look over as long as nothing gamebreaking happens.
No wow isn't dead and it won't die anytime soon unless they just run out of new people wanting to play the game. |
