This is causing some they are basically going to say that if you don't have the hard mode gear you cant run raids (in a generalized manner here)

Now, a lot of people hate GS. does serve a good purpose.

It is no different than locking out a level 20 from the level 30 dungeons.  It will prevent people from trying to piggy back on people who did run the appropriate content and skip ahead.  It will prevent the un favorable situation where one group member is getting harassed for being under geared, or others leaving a group because of someone not knowing that this instance you need full HM gear or whatever.

I think its great because it will reduce negative instances of someone unknowingly entering an instance they are not prepared for (and you can NEVER tell these people anything without them taking offense, not matter how nice you phrase it btw)

Also, it will stop people from basically skipping the endgame content and diving right into the top tier by riding on the backs of friends ect.  So you will see more people running the level 44-50 dungeons to gear up for hard modes, and more people running hard modes to gear up for raids ect...and less people trying to skip it all and do a raid.

What are your thoughts?  Does locking endgame instances as they have done instances while leveling up  piss you off or make you happy...and why?

I can see the positive points of gear score, but it just invites elitists. Games are meant to be fun and enjoyable, not sport. If people want competitions then join a football club or other sport activity. I just want to log on and enjoy what free time I have with out some wee twit telling me they're better than me.

However if the tool does the job instead of them telling you gtfo of  their raid, than that's actually a step making world less elitistic.

Damn, it's now clear what we were missing before the Civil Rights Era ****ed up everything.  If public facilities had only had devices that detected your race and refused to admit blacks to "whites only" areas instead of white folk having to tell them to gtfo, that would have been a step toward making the world less racist.

I'm a "hate the player, not the game" type of person when it comes to things like gear scores and dps meters, but I will say that this seems to be a fitting tool for a community that is a non-stop bitchfest about bad tanks, bad healers, bad DD, bad ... everything.

Holy ****, you had to stop dpsing and use Sleep to save your healer from an add the tank didn't pick up?  Better quit now because this run is a bust!

At some level acquiring gear (and skills, teamwork, etc.) that enables you to take on more difficult content is the entire foundation of progression raiding.  In that sense, it's obvious to any reasonable player that you can sometimes hurt more than you can help while undergeared, and you should be left behind.

One can also stand GS on its head, however, and identify it as a crutch for players who are unable or unwilling to work around the shortcomings of the people they play with, and players who can't be bothered to learn the game's mechanics or the nuances of their role/job.  It puts them in position to be carried by the few good, geared players, rather than have to take part in carrying the many bad, undergeared ones.  Aside from participating in world first-style achievements, I would argue that truly good players don't care much about carrying other players as long as the goal is achieved.  If that means playing in a way that they wouldn't have to play with other good players, in order to compensate for the shortcoming of their group in certain fights, so be it.

The best use for gear scores IMO is for a group that often runs together to identify areas where they can get more out of their group as a whole, and to identify content they think they can do with the evening's group make-up. ie "We can only take on X tonight, but if we gear up players A and B, we should be able to take on Y with this group next week."  Unfortunately, most players would rather just find permanent replacements for players A and B, but that's on the quality of people playing the game, not the tool itself.

This is a lie.

I've thrown myself into the gorge in Western Thanalan.  The game caps falling damage at 1 HP, and if there are jumps/falls in the game that should kill you, that one more than qualifies.

Wrong.  I've died from fall damage.  You just got lucky - much like how I have when I jump from absurd heights.

Luck has nothing to do with it.

Yoshi-P - Yes. If the damage is high enough to kill, we will round it up to 1 HP. However, if you have a monster in the hate list you will die.

Pic with time stamp or it didn't happen.

But seriously, I've seen

90000, 1017, 10102, 5006, 2002, and "Unable to update NA/EU character list." All today.

After being out of commission for 28 hours with 3102 during Phase 4.

I'm now past the 8-hour mark not being able to log into my NA "main".

Haven't been able to log into my NA character since I woke up this morning (now 9 hours).

4.5 hours of maintenance yesterday.

28 hours with 3102 last weekend.

Game wouldn't let me complete my level 5 story quest even when I was logged in yesterday.

Welcome to a new MMO?

SWTOR, TSW, GW2, and Neverwinter all had issues, even with core features (like GW2's AH and Neverwinters diamond exploit).  GW2 had dozens of event bugs and SWTOR was a joke with automated customer service droids offering no help at all for the numerous little issues that game was riddled with.

But at least I could play my main character(s) when I wantedFor me, FFXIV:ARR sets the bar for the worst kickoff to an MMO I've been a part of.  It doesn't matter if the issue is technical or logical, this has been a lousy ass experience.

Maintenance (straight from SE's mouth with the updated ending times) thus far:

Aug. 24, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:55 a.m. (PDT)

Aug. 24, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. (PDT)

Aug. 25, 2013 from 12:00 a.m. to 1:05 a.m. (PDT)

Aug. 25, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to present (as of 8:50 a.m.). (PDT)

This is a pretty bad launch

Google WoWs launch to see a bad launch.

This is 2013, you can't really compare them.

You can compare it to wows 5.0 launch if you want to, though, even though that happened before this still.

What does the date have to do with it?

Locking servers so the starting zones are playable seems like a reasonable approach to the flood of players that happens at launch.

My reference had to do with uncontrollable server crashes vs controlling the flow of players.

Edit: didn't need the rest.

If you're going to make a personal attack against somebody at least own up to it.

28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds. That is when the world will end.

But seriously, page back to the releases of other big games on mmorpg.  You'll see people complaining about login errors and wait times and black screens and getting booted and so on.

It will be the same with FFXIV:ARR.

The big thing IMO is making sure thousands of players are not locked out of the game for most of the early access period.  Another 3102-type of scenario would IMO constitute a bad start, regardless of how many players get in and play without a problem.  As many issues as every MMO has at launch, I haven't personally seen a "I couldn't play the game the whole week/weekend" type of thing come up in large numbers (where it was actually a server-side problem) during recent launches of major titles (ie the last couple of years).

It offers the promise of new (and hopefully at least somewhat challenging) group content to conquer, and unlike GW2 it does so while giving you a reason to continue doing it once you've capped out in levels ... because harder stuff, requiring the skill, gear, and teamwork one acquires/develops in earlier content, is coming.

Now, whether it can actually deliver on that promise, we'll find out in a month or two.  Plenty of games offer the same thing and fail at it.  In that sesnse FFXIV:ARR just happens to be the next opportunity for the industry to get it right at a time when other games have been moving away from trying at all.

In addition to progression content, however, it also offers other areas of focus.  We don't know how robust the PvP play will really be, but the crafting, exploration, and story experiences are well-developed and there's a certain "gotta catch 'em all" mentality build into the game as well (not regarding pets of any kind, but in the sense that the came has several features that appeal to the obsessive completionist).

The game also embraces it's Final Fantasy roots, which can be a big draw to people who have enjoyed the franchise (of which there are many).

However, when I fired up the client, I clicked through the agreements and it did not ask me to select which character I wanted to give the preorder items to.  I'm still not even confident the preorder/EA codes have gone through.   I haven't received any contact from SE this week.

PC version.

can you please post a link for "the new ffxiv forum"?

Those are resistances, not damage bonuses.

PC version.

You're not wrong OP, however ...

The email I received when I bought the game said this:

Visit <link> and register. You will be notified via email prior to the launch of the game on when you can return and redeem your preorder code (code listed above) to unlock Early Access to the game along with instructions on how to receive your Cait Sith Doll minion and Moogle Cap digital content

When I received it several weeks ago I followed the directions and entered my email address so that I could be notified.

I still haven't received that email notifying me to go to <link> and redeem my preorder code.

The website I was later directed to displayed this prior to August 20:

For all countries outside of Japan, registration of the pre-order bonus code is scheduled to begin on the 20th of August, 2013.

In order to log in to FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn during the early access period, you must first register your pre-order code. Please follow the onscreen instructions to complete registration.

This page is for the registration of Windows pre-order codes only. For pre-order codes on the PlayStation®3, please register through PlayStation®Store.

And yet another point of access gives this message today:

You can now redeem your pre-order code and download the game to prepare for early access, which begins on August 24th, 2013. You will receive the Cait Sith Doll Minion and Mog Cap items via the Moogle Delivery Service in-game mail system when official service begins.

So which is it?  Am I supposed to wait for the email to tell me to go <link> to redeem my preorder code?  Did redemption of the preorder code begin on August 20 and I wasn't added to the proper email list to be notified?  Am I supposed to listen to the website that says I can now redeem my preorder code despite not receiving the email?  With the massive load they're under, how long will it take me to get through customer service to actually get answers and/or my issue resolved?  Ultimately, I entered my code and I'm now registered according to my profile, but I still haven't gotten the actual EA code email yet.

People freaking out and entering their code 100 times and calling for heads need to chill, but it's really okay to admit that SE has not handled this as well as they could have, because they haven't.

If you're going to tell people that code redemption is open on the 20th, then be prepared to send out emails on the 20th -- whether that email says you can all redeem your preorder code now or we'll be letting people enter in waves to relieve congestion and please wait for another email --  be prepared to handle a large number of players registering their codes, be prepared to have the follow-up emails with the 20-digit code sent, and be prepared for things to go wrong.

That ARR is a better game than 1.0 and that other companies have not been prepared either might be true, but it is also immaterial to the truth/falsehood of SE's lack of preparation.  It doesn't mean the world is going to end or the game will fail or SE is the worst company in the world.  They recovered from the 3102 and 90k business and assure us that these are now history, and they will recover from the preorder code business too.  The world will go on.  EA will start on August 24 and the game will launch three days later.  Players will play, SE will make money.  And SE still will not have handled the events of launch week as well as they could have.

Mine is now showing up on my account.

I've had FFXIV active on my service account at since Beta, but my account at showed no registered games until some time in the last couple of hours.

I plugged my 18-digit preorder code from Amazon in earlier in the day (8/20) and got an error thrown back at me, so maybe it did go through, just not in the manner originally intended.

My primary concern is my beta characters showing up when I start playing the game on August 24.   Maybe everybody's is the same way, but the use of two apparently different account systems to keep track of things on SE's end makes me feel uncomfortable about that.

Forcing game mechanics is also close enough to hacking that any judge would obsolve any responiblity of SE to give early access.

So, people are given conflicting information about being able to register codes beginning on the 20th and waiting for an email that still hasn't come and it crosses your mind that SE should sue players for "hacking" to prove a point ...

That was awful.

I was kind of hoping one of the dudes would turn into a female mithra though - would have been more realistic lol.

I was thinking it felt like a military or shoe company commercial where everyday people morph into soldiers or athletes, while narrated by the voice of a 1980s He-Man toy commercial: "Only YOU can stop the evil forces of Skeletor!"

Because progress.

Voice acting since they started including it in the FF games has always been kind of hit-or-miss for me.  Audio quality aside, I really liked the party voices in XII, but hated most of them in X.  Loved Lightning and Sazh in XIII, couldn't stand Snow or Vanille.  I thought Thancred sounded terrible.  They should have gotten Henry Cavill.
