What are your thoughts on SOE (Sony Online Entertainment)?

I could write a book on this, and anybody who knows me or has read my editorials would expect me to write some scathing, angry piece here.

Let me share this. I was a hardcore Star Wars Galaxies player, “was” being the key word. I stopped playing that game about two years ago, a few weeks after the Trials of Obi-wan expansion came out. I’m sure you all can guess why I stopped playing.

SOE was Gods & Heroes publisher and partner and in my time spent there I learned a lot about the nature of the business and about SOE. I think they are a wonderful company who really wants to make great games. They have the experience and business sense to know what really is best for the games under their belt.

So yes, I still am bitter and want my old Star Wars Galaxies back, however I know that if SOE didn’t do what they did, we might not even have a Star Wars Galaxies today. They have learned from what happened in the past and I think we see that happening with Vanguard today. Vanguard has improved ten fold since SOE came into the picture and I see them really working hard to support that game,

What the heck? what planet is this guy from?

Just because some retailers offer a newly released product at a `discounted' price, doesn't necessarily mean that it's a "fire sale" on a title they're expecting to tank. Quite the contrary, it's more likely to occur where retailers expect a high volume of sales and are looking to secure a larger share of the overall market,

Right.  That's why we saw all those cut-priced boxes of  Wow two weeks after it was released

yup, Wow hovered at $50 for almost two years

It's been fun tagging along as games have evolved over the years. It seems right now that there is a consensus that MMORPGs are sort of stuck in a repetitive rut. Even the game developers are not happy, since most them are losing profits to WoW.

The solution will have to be some game that can break the mould. The mould that it must break is the very shape of WoW - the accumulation of all MMORPGs leading up to the perfection that is WoW.

Like Starcraft, Diablo, and Warcraft; a Blizzard game only reiterates the features and design that we've already seen. When that design is trumped, it disappears.

I have faith in MMORPG gamers because they are explorers and dreamers. People who imagine something larger than a deathmatch in an FPS. MMORPGs are already breaking the mould of what games are. Perhaps it's premature to ask for something further down the road of video game evolution.

One thing is for certain - the evolution of games is inevitable. WoW has perfected the last generation of MMORPGs, and many of the upcoming games are simply trying to beat WoW, or are trying to draw a small niche of gamers. Eventually our attention will be drawn away from WoW towards some new game that we can't even imagine right now - something that will be innovative and ground-breaking. This game will be as alien to WoW as WoW is alien to Chrono trigger.

I'm afraid that we'll have to wait for this game. There is alot of cheese in MMORPGs, like there is in movies and music. It's strange that one genre can draw so many poorly implemented games. The failures will slowly reinforce the movement by game developers towards a game that is original.

I'm taking a long break from MMORPGs - I have a degree to focus on. When I come back, I think I will be drawn by something none of us have thought of, something we haven't seen before.

I'm not being pessimistic or optimistic - I'm simply pointing out the inevitable. Those that are new to this genre might not understand what I'm saying, and might argue with me. Those that hve been here for a while will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Let us take a second and probe the future. Somewhere amidst the vast unknowns is the WoW killer.

Who will make it?
Is it in development already?
Is it in development, but completely secret?

Brad McQuaid

They turned most rabid fanboys into haters in less than a week of release.

There is just one thing that would save Hellgate now and this is simply dropping the subscription and fast.

But they will not do it , after all it is EA

Dude I love your sig!

Well, I don't usaully reply to quotes, but since you used such colorful letters I will reply once then head to other boards. I have a station pass. I checked in  a few weeks back and its still the same clunky game that it was at release.  They, (Microsoft, Sony, ) spent 30 mil in dev? where is the the 30 mil? Since release ,  the the subscription has dropped from 90k to under* 30k.  http://mmogdata.voig.com/ and that is just to August. From August to now I have heard the scripts are down to 20k or lower*.

So, that is why I say it's a pay to play beta. A fun beta to some it may be, who have the rig to try to run it.

I played WoW for a couple years and VG in beta and a couple months after untill the game was just to painfull to play anymore. VG should never have been released. It's still a pay to play early beta.

If your a WoW burnout, I suggest TR, nothing has changed in Azeroth. But if  you was a new player I would suggest WoW due to user frienldness and instant fun.

Friend, save yourself alot of grief and dissapointment and just play EQ2. I was in VG beta and played until Sigil went under and SoE scooped up this disaster. The game is just broken, if you don't wanna take my word for it just read from others. Again, I am not trying to hate, just sayinng I played this game, even bought a new computer and video card and ram and still looks like a slide show..and a ugly one at that.

I don't think SOE can weather another flop or even a semi flop like EQII.

C'mon.  I don't know what you think constitutes a "flop".  But i certainly don't think EQ2 fits the bill considering its still going strong after 3 years.  If it was a flop it would've been canned ages ago.

You sure do like your "troll" status because you don't give me any reason to think your anything but one.

/agree. If I had to compare lotro to eq2, eq2 wins hands down. lotro imho is the blandest mmo ever made. The first game to lure you in to paying $50 to be a "founder" to pay $10 a month, only to play it enough to see that the game reminds you quake 1....everything is "brown" ...no music in the game and hardly any classes. Its kinda like WoW for runscape...but you have to pay for it

Nothing is gonnna kill WoW. The expansion may tick off a few ppl but they will have two other nice games to turn to, WAR and AoC.  The first expansion of WoW, ppl did not have this luxury. They had Vanguard and Lotro. Now they are back in Azeroth. WoW will be here when Darkfall and Duke Nukem Forever release.
