There is a hiding / stealth skill. Its called having skill. Learn to be sneaky and use the environment to hide you. And about the hiding and stealth skill: Won't hurt to implement a real hiding and stealth skill. In about 10 years UO I never heard a lot of people complaining about them, as you could use AOE-spells or tracking skill to reveal them.  Was especially nice to have near a IDOC with lots of reds. But o.k., maybe you can really hide better in a real 3D environment (I hope there are no "names" above your head?).

There is no tab targeting and no names above your head.  You can run over a hill and hide behind a tree, and strafe around it if someone is chasing you, or dissapear with skill and sneak with skill.  It is an amazing game for that.  A stealth/hide skill has no place in Darkfall.

 

Actual steath, as opposed to press a button and become invisible stealth, is so satisfying. That is one of the awesome things about Darkfall, there are so few games where you can use the terrain and the direction they are looking to get the drop on someone.

Locking the view rather then have the traditional zoomed out, pannable camera is an important part of Darkfall as it creates tension and allows people to sneak up on others using real stealth rather then invisibility. Like others said it is still 3rd person with a melee weapon out, though you cannot pan or zoom out.

A Man stands besides a lone Ash tree, one hand rests upon its gnarled and weathered skin. Mist surrounds both, isolation would appear apparent.

The Man kneels upon one knee, a hidden necklace falls from beneath his armour. He picks up a clump of earth, breaking it within his thumb and forefingers. Watching it fall to the ground as if by mere touch he can assume its composition.

The figure stands once more, tall and proud, seemingly satisfied with his scrutiny of the dirt. Only then does he notice the now exposed necklace, he raises the small symbol of a hammer which hangs from the chain to his lips, before harbouring it once more beneath his chain shirt. A gesture as familiar to him as breathing.

A Raven lands upon the uppermost branches, the Man falls under its perusal briefly before it finally settles with a shake of its feathered head.

The Man turns, raises his hands skywards fists clenched. A guttural cry escapes his lips. The bird hops from talon to talon full of anguish.

Then silence...

As if by divine intervention the mists are dissolved. A horizon besieged by multicoloured sails, the Man's roar is answered from a thousand throats. Then a mass of armour, sword and axe stream from the now present sea.

The already aggrieved Raven squawks its protest to the approaching horde before taking to wing. The Man stands amidst the swirling torrent of axe and sword, like a island engulfed by a raging river.

He points towards the now retreating carrion.

“Tell Allfather that Valhalla will welcome us soon.
But not yet, not yet.”

His words pursue the Raven, he turns once more to the fray.


And so it begins...

DanesLaw is an independent EU, English speaking practical roleplay clan run by people who have played Darkfall successfully since beta/release over three and a half years ago. We are open to people who want to roleplay as well as those who don't. For example, we have a challenge system in place where those of lower military rank can challenge those above them to a fight and if they win they will gain their rank. This fits our theme and gives more immersion in the guilds lore but does not require people to speak in "thee"s and "thou"s.

 

Being Vikings you can expect plenty of action, sieges, raids and mercenary work. We are not a pure PvP clan though, we have plenty of members who enjoy PvE, crafting, trading and so on. We also hold regular clan events that range from monster slaying to tournaments. As mentioned above we also have a challenge system that allows members to advance in our military ranks by fighting those of higher rank and taking their title if they win. We are putting in a lot of effort writing up rich lore so those looking for a guild with something more to offer, or have an interest in Vikings or history, will be well catered for.

 

We are looking for mature people who enjoy team play and events, to join our community. You are not required to be an awesome PvPer as we are a well rounded clan and do not specialize solely on PvP. However, you are required to follow orders when you do join in with our raiding/siege/mercenary work as team play is very important to us. You must also be a Human and have a Viking name. We are also limiting recruitment to those aged 18 and above.

 

Yes you will like it. As said above the world is filled with mob spawns, you may have played your 2 hours during a technical issue with spawning monsters.The vast majority of gear is crafted in Darkfall.

Pretty much. Politics has a massive role in Darkfall be it overt of covertly making clans/alliances fight each other. The sieges can be anything from small scale to truly epic in size with hundreds of combatants. Combat is FPS style with only manual targeting of spells, melee and archery. As a side note Archery is my love in Darkfall as the arrows have a travel speed, an arc and go exactly where you aim. This makes shooting enemies a real joy.

With regards to bugs you can be pretty confident in the games solidity as they have had three and a half years of experience and are properly funded now.

AV care about their customers. They had to wipe and they did. I am glad they are looking after me as a customer by making Darkfall: Unholy Wars a success so I can continue to enjoy the game rather then falling at the first hurdle by failing to wipe.

This is exactly spot on. For players who've never really played sandbox games, DarkFall is a great sandbox. But for anyone who has played many sandboxes, DarkFall clearly falls short.

 

Darkfall may not be perfect but it is still a sandbox game. The fact is noone else is making a game like it so we should give props to them for what they have acheived and encourage them with feedback and ideas on how to improve the game.

Yeah, they have put a lot of diversity in the crafting appearance now. For example this concept image shows the aesthetic choices you can pick for making 1H and 2H Axes. Once you pick that the quality of the materials you use has a dramatic effect on the resulting weapon appearance, a small example of the same axe of different quality can be seen here. The end result will be a lot of variety and choice in what your gear looks like.

  good post, i want a good sandbox game but if this game is just constant pvp action, full loot or not, no thanks.
 

 

Darkfall is not constant PvP, if you want to PvE or gather stuff then you can. However there is always the chance that someone might find and attack you. This can be mitigated by going off the beaten track or staying close to guard towers which offer good protection, especially at the start of the game when people do not have the resistance jewellery that helps protect from them. You can also simply run away if you do get attacked or wear cheap gear that you don't mind losing.

Bare in mind that at the start of the game everyone will be in the NPC cities, all bunched up. This means that a comparatively small number of spawns will be farmed and as such raiders will be more common. Once the playerbase has spread out to the various player holdings as the are built you will find yourself attacked less often when farming.

You didn't understand what Galadourn and baphamet are getting at.  Most of the efforts put into DarkFall were put into it's PvP, the rest of the features (crafting, exploring, PvE, etc) are lackluster to say the least. It's something most PvPers don't see because it's not their focus, but to other experienced players looking for a sandbox, they'll be sorely disappointed.

 

Well crafting plays a central role in Darkfall as your armour, jewellery, weapons, arrows, potions, food, enchants, and such like are all made by players. Since this gear gets lost a lot and also breaks you can see the demand for crafting. To get the mats to craft all that takes a lot of PvE, fun PvE at that thanks to the aim based combat and good mob AI and the danger of being attacked by players. With regards to exploring, there is plenty of that to do as the world is huge. I was my guilds cartographer at release, mapping out good spots for farm and good places to raid. Whenever I need to farm I also explore and try different places till I find a spot that suits me.

So let me get this straight, you are talking about how this game is now based on playing it for one month after release three and a half years ago... This is where all the stupid myths about the game come from. Darkfall changed a LOT since release, your view based on your limited gameplay is years out of date.

I think you are confusing potential and success. Darkfall is the best game I have played by a long long way since UO. That is categorically not a failure, calling a game a failure when what I feel is mirrored by so many others is mind-boggling. It could, however, have been even better and it could have appealed/not put off many more people. That is why they made DF:UW.

No but seriously, this game is a hardcore PVP game, if you can't deal with PVP, if you can't deal with losing you're precious pixels, stop posting, stop looking at the game, and just go play something else, cause this is what it is and this is how it should be. If you guys like action-packed skill-based pvp thrillrides (anyone who thinks otherwise about the skill part more than likely sucked at this part),  massive siege warfare where you fight 50 VS 50, 100 VS 100, where the game feels like a game of starcraft, but from the perspective of a zealot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7-Gq2UTtWY perfect example, each one of those spells individually aimed, the target called) for control over resources, dominance over land, than this game is for you. There's more to DF than just this ofc, but this is the part I found most enjoyable.

Fixed it for you and yes I played Darkfall, if you know how to make a macro, than you can be a "Boss" in the game.   24/7 Macroing into Walls and such does not equal player skill.  Sorry, try again.

Darkfall was okay but it needed way to much work to be worth sticking it out for me personally and I left after the first month.

Until they fix the Macroing issue, the game is not worth it.

 

This just shows how uninformed you are about Darkfall. A skilled player with a character only a few weeks old can kill vets, this has been done many many times. Player skill in Darkfall was always greater then your character skill because of the skill required to fight.

My sentiments exactly, Ice.  Unfortunately, with a tiny--relatively unskilled--dev team like AV, I think we are setting the bar too high when we assume UW will be even half of what they are claiming it will be.
Please post what you do not think AV will acheive in DF:UW. As stated by DavisFlight AV created a top class engine that handled massive sieges and a whole world without instances from scratch. That is not possible with "relatively unskilled" programmers, you need excellent skill to achieve that.


Just don't get mad when nobody plays DF:UW.
 

It's just one post, don't go to the other extreme and condemn a game because of some rude post. There are rude posters in every community, if you don't like them then ignore them.

Correct me pls if I am wrong, as I have not played DF yet (just read a lot about it): Darkfall is all about PvP! Only PvP! Darkfall doesn't focus entirely on PvP, that is a myth. In the years I have played Darkfall I have spent more time doing PvE then PvP and I am an avid PvPer. I spent loads of time crafting, since you need to craft gear and enchants rather then getting your equipment from PvE. I also spent loads of time exploring, scouting and map making. Gathering resources is also a big part of the game with people cutting trees, gathering herbs, mining iron and stone.

DF:UW will improve on Darkfall in many ways, but we should not paint a false picture of what Darkfall was.

Tasos has just posted on the official blog a confirmation that characters from Darkfall will not be transfered into DF:UW. This was widely speculated to be the case but we lacked a final statement. This means DF:UW truely is a new game and everyone will be starting at the same level. Good news for newcomers!

EVE is a sandbox game in spite of the safe zones, much like Darkfall is a sandbox game in spite of other sandbox deficiencies it has. And yes I agree about the lack of sandbox games out there. However the PvE/Safezone crowd have games like ArcheAge to play whereas the people who yearn for a game like Darkfall have no alternatives because only Darkfall dares to do what it does.
