Jesus Christ, i am so tired of this Vista thing...

It seems that Vista has every single one of my directories tagged as read-only which means that i can't save anything onto my computer. I tried changing that but it resets back automatically everytime. The whole thing about extra security is just bullshit as i can't do anything with my machine right now...

What are the "accounts" for anyway? I have administrator rights but still i cannot do anything?!? When i try to change something, a pop-up appears asking for approvement. When i left click and chose save file as, it tells me i cannot save the file to that directory because the properties are set wrong. When i try and change them they change back... ARGH!!!!!!

And yes... i need to install Flash Player in order to view certain content at web sites, but do you even think i can access the download...? Nope! Adobe's website is in pure HTML and the exe file needed is on one of their FTP servers which i can't seem to access.

I spend the better day of yesterday installing this OS and to my surprise, a lot of basic function stopped working. One of the major ones is that surfing the Internet with either IE or Firefox is incredibly slow. I can't even access my Hotmail account anymore and several other websites like Adobe doesn't show any graphics (or very few of them). I have no trouble accessing Hotmail through my dads XP-setup though so what the hell is wrong? Very often i get a "Server not found" error on other sites.

One other thing is driver support... oh my god!! I have had some problems let me tell you. I use a somewhat older sound card called Terratec DMX  6Fire 24/96 and they do not even have any official drivers for either 64-bit or Vista. I managed to find some kind of beta but now my sound is randomly jumping in volume, very annoying.

So just of the top of your head... what can i do to improve Vista and basic functions like surfing - i'm going crazy here!?! I really would like to stick with this 64-bit system since i have 4 gb of ram where 1 gb would be useless if had to revert back to XP 32-bit...

...and what the hell?!?  XP 32-bit version can only handle 3 gb!! Argh!

Today i installed an additional 2 gb of ram before i start with Age of Conan and imagine my surprise when i noticed that Windows XP can only handle 3 gb. So my extra 1 gb... is it useless if i do not upgrade to 64-bit or Vista?

This is a real shitty deal... you seriously have to pay a monthly fee to Fileplanet in order to participate in the open beta?!? This automatically excludes 99.9% of the people who really want to get into the action. I'm not about to pay, so does this mean i'm out of luck then?

I have pre-ordered the game already and shouldn't that count for something? I mean, isn't it more important to have a paying customer of the game you are about to launch, to have them be able to play the beta instead of some other "no-name" file service users? What the hell - Fileplanet users? What do they have to do with AoC? FP must be paying Funcom a hefty sum to get this privilege...

So what is this shit?!? How come those westeners ALWAYS get away with cheaper subscription rates? At the current rate 14.99 USD is 92,30 swedish krona, but 14,94 EURO is a whopping 142,66 swedish krona per month... WTF?!? That's almost 40% more expensive!

We get it cheaper cus we have to pay for health care and University...wanta trade?

Ehm... no?

When i think back to all the good times i've had playing games i sometimes really get sick from nostalgia. I LOVED the good old days... the games, the game computers, the video games and during the early years of my life i have owned:

  1. A pong-clone
  2. Atari 2600
  3. ColecoVision
  4. Sinclair Spectrum 16k
  5. Sinclair Spectrum 48k (an upgrade of my old 16k)
  6. Commodore 64
  7. Commodore Amiga
  8. PC (386/486 and so on)
  9. Several of the preciding machines and game computers (never a Nintendo machine though)

I was born in 1972 so my point is this... games were better before. At least it felt like it at the time and because i have so strong emotions and fond memories of them, this must still be true? Hands down - too me - the most important game machine EVER, was the Commodore 64. But if you think at it from an "artistic" point of view, todays games do offer so much more in terms of great game play, story, immersion and graphics. So howcome the C64 had such an huge impact on my life - is it because i was younger and more "inexperienced" at the time?

When i'm at work (delivering bread and cookies), almost daily i get a vague sensation of nostalgia that overflows me. I can't explain it, it just happens and they are almost always very hazy, not tied onto any special moment or game experience, just... well, a nice fuzzy feeling and a longing to return to my childhood days of video gaming. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that gaming was a rather new form of entertainment, maybe this is why it still has such a strong affection?

What comes into mind is M.U.D. (Multi-user Dungeon) but i guess there were other perpetual online games before that?

On a side note i can't help to think that kids today will never learn to appreciate the importance of the 70s-80s computer and video games. Sure, they know about Halo, the Wii and Mario, but long before this there were a vast amount of excellent games and machines laying the foundation. What wasn't that common i guess was online games - so which "MMOs" came before Ultima Online and the likes?

Wow! Okey... so many thoughts and perspectives on the matter. Today i ordered 2 GB extra ram for my computer making it a total of 4 GB, which isn't at all bad whichever OS i choose to go with. But i must admit that i'm very confused... more so than before.

I see all the pros and cons, but in the end it seems that the downsides outweigh the benefits of having DX10?

So for a more practical question: If i go with Vista and the 64-bit version, is there any simple way for me to keep my current XP setup intact by just copying it to an alternative hard drive or DVD? If anything goes haywire, i really would like to have an option of booting with the old XP OS like before...

Hmm... yeah, good thing that extra ram isn't too expensive nowadays.

I recently bought a Nvidia 8800 GTS 512 card to go with my 6600 Dual 2 Core CPU and 2 Gb ram. I am currently using XP and as i understand it, upgrading to Vista will give me extra lighting, shadow, particle and volumetric effects. Even though this probably will look nice, i am somewhat reluctant to get Vista because of the hassle of installing it. The plan would be to keep a copy of my current XP installation but i'm not sure if i simply can copy it back if Vista doesn't install correctly?

So what do you guys say... is DX10 worth the trouble?

I haven't been in the loop as much as i had hoped in regards of SGW news and info. I just love the Atlantis-series and was wondering if the devs ever mentioned that visiting the Atlantis base would ever become a reality in the MMO?

Open your computer, remove 1 GB of ram, and play some game. Thats how it will play in Vista, because Vista waste like 600 MB of ram for craptastic desktop candy.

I asume you can disable many of the unnecessary functions, that should boost the system somewhat?

Today i pre-ordered AoC and i'm pretty much set on going with one of the priest classes since i enjoy playing support. During the years of playing, i always found myself lacking the skill to be a really good offensive fighter in PvP, but i do a decent job supporting others. So here's the hting... there are like three priest classes!?!

I even read somewhere that there might be a fourth one, so i'm way lost here. Could anyone of you guys give me some quick pro's and con's, which one do i choose and why? I realize there are several questions that needs to be answered - for example what my playing style is like and such - but i would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the priests. Why would you choose to go with them?

Thanks!

But isn't it true from that point of view, that any MMO's storyline could never be centered around established characters within a story, but rather that it is one of several taking place within a larger event - like for example the Sith War or the rebuilding of a society? I personally think that this was one of the flaws in SWG, that they forced the main characters into the game without them having a real purpose or function.

Take Darth Vader as an example. He should have been this legendary Sith Lord that you only heard about, one that many either feared or supported. The results of his story and achievements would at times cross your path, but never to the extent that you actually met him. Let's face it, that is just crazy. But instead that the decisions he made eventually ended up affected your life and your choices as a character within the game.

Indeed, that may be true. The reason for this is that i have had no contact what so ever with this franchise. There are also several other potential candidates within the world of Anime and i would bet that they have millions and millions of loyal fans.

Are there any tv-series or movies made of the 40k franchise?

As i see it, there are three major science-fiction franchises that could potentially lead to MMO greatness. I'm a huge fan of anything sci-fi and have been every since i was seven. After the long reign of one of these, Star Wars Galaxies, my eyes are turned towards, what i feel are the other two - one is of course Star Trek, and last but not least, Stargate (notice that they all start with a 'star').

Anyway, since the future of Star Trek Online is somewhat uncertain, i can't begin to tell you how much i am looking forward to Stargate Worlds. Like both SW and ST, Stargate has had a enormous amount of fans, and i feel that there are no other franchises that could even come close to these three in popularity.

That being said, SG is still going strong trough the Atlantis-series and with the preceding SG-1 - that ran for a whopping TEN YEARS - i think that this might be the SCI-FI MMO everyone has been waiting for. A science-fiction multiuser game worthy of succeeding the other great 'star' - Star Wars Galaxies.

Now, one could argue that Terminator, Battlestar Galactica, The Matrix or even Doctor Who could compete with the three mentioned. But i share volume of fans and the impact they have had and the influences to our societies cultures, it's hard to include anything but the stars.

Hey everyone,

I have since a year back had some graphical problems with my computer when playing games. To keep a long story short i tried re-installing Windows and updating the drivers - nothing worked. So i decided to try and buy a new graphics card and it was sort of on impulse. Now i wanted to ask you ppl if AoC will run decent?

I bought a "Leadtek Geforce 8800GTS 512MB DDR3, TV-out, 2xDVI, HDTV, SLI, 16" (http://www.mycom.se/product_info.php?products_id=40839).

My computer is a Dual 2 Core 6600 at 2,4 GhZ with 2 megs of ram.

I usually play at 1280 x 1024 resolution since that is the optimal for my flatscreen.

So what do you think - will it run okay? I haven't recieved the card yet so i'm not sure it will solve my problems i had, but i'm worried AoC woun't play in its full glory?

Apparently a relative of mine has problems even installing the trial. He says that the setup file will not activate... anyone know what that could be about?

I had no idea that there were that many MMO's out there which had been cancelled, let alone existed in the first place! Makes you wonder why some of them make it and while others do not. It must be really hard to break through into the MMO-market these days...
