WOW, GW, DAoC...Its all good. words from an old gamer
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/20/07 10:58:57 AM
I am one of the few with the luxury of having time to play games. OK, so I am old but, I seem to be able to keep up with the young gamer generation. Servers are down on WOW at the time so I thought I would drop-dime on the .com.
Secretly, I read all the flames, complaints and concerns of games. I really enjoy how some games get people going and see the political part of everyone’s view which is why I do not engage with them. I guess it is part of the MMORPG world and to be honest, the battles provide me with a wealth of information.
So what is your point Seabeast! Well, I am going to share my views on games and why my current active game is WOW. I got WOW hot off the shelf when it first came out and enjoyed it to cap level. I do enjoy PvE and PvP however, I found myself grinding to PvP and switched back to EQ2. Along the way I tried every other MMORPG inbetween.
I am not saying anything good or bad about any of them, they are all good in their own right. To the best of my memory it is the newness of a game that gets my attention. You know, starting the same level as most, learning as you all go, the camaraderie and bonding of gamers. Eve was like that when I got it new, 6 noobs hooked up and took shifts mining all night to get more and hook each other up, building as we went. The politics got unreal and as the game developed we grew into an evil mess. Eve has the best PvP balance I have seen and a death penalty that brought me to tears (as a game should).
EQ2 was fun for its time and the community was fair and I experienced the same situation when it first came out. We can argue to death about game mechanics but, I really like starting a new game and EQ2 provided opportunity to grow.
Guild Wars came out and I jumped on it and hooked up with a click, it was a good time but damn, the cap level was made quickly. Sure its free but, not a lot to do when you worked the missions. My favorite part of GW are the cut scenes, I must have been kicked out of hundred groups for watching them.
So, why back to WOW? Hard question. Burning Crusades mostly, expansions drag me back into the game in search of the old days of social stuff. Nothing beats having to travel to another city and learning a fellow gamer lives there. I hooked up with one 19 year old college kid in Chicago after playing Planet Side and we had one hell of a weekend. He talked another member into driving to us and we stayed in “Mens Town” most of that week, telling stories, plotting raids and mindless stuff like that.
So whats to come? I am looking forward to the new games mostly Pirates of the Burning Sea. The political Pro’s and Con’s are well underway already and I can only hope that the game provides opportunity to socialize a new. I have to travel back to Chicago at the end of the month to do a PhD clinical. But, I am really looking forward hooking up with the people, old friends and new, in what will surely be a good time. Until then, I will finish reading the gamers debates and check WOW servers.
May the Swartz be with you all,

I do not know who I am more disappointed at, SOE for providing answers to questions that seem to be more like advertising or MMORPG.COM for dancing around the real questions about the company. I expected SOE to not address what I have been reading about their company but, for over a year I have been reading about how god-awful SOE is by MMORPG.COM members. I would expect MMORPG.COM to have at least mentioned that some of their most loyal readers have shared about some minor conflicts with the company service and direction. I have been looking for MMORPG.COM to interview a member of SOE for some time figuring that they would jump at the opportunity to address any number of problems their dedicated MMORPG.com members have been sharing on the forums. Even when an SOE employee of COPORATE COMMUNICATIONS shares the companies’ mission statement, MMORPG.COM interviewer passes up the chance to address issues of services and empowerment, creativity and commitment. Chris Kramer: The company’s mission statement sums it all up: To be the worldwide leader in online entertainment; and to expand our company through the development of high-quality, industry-leading entertainment, software and services, while fostering an environment of empowerment, creativity and commitment. This has been an all-time-low for MMORPG.COM interviews, come on, if your wanted to advertise for SOE do it like the others and plaster it on the front page. Get us an interviewer who is not afraid to support what the gaming website members who want to know, “Is there REALLY some problems with SOE’s operating procedures or is all the complaints about company just a few disgruntled gamers. After all, this is suppose to be a site where RPG gamers can come and learn about games…or do I owe the interviewer an apology? Seabeast |
