I loved TSW, esp with its innovative adult horror theme, graphics, innovative investigative missions, interesting progression system, and strong story, but you'd be blind not to admit its problems.

1) On NA servers, the game's deserted until you hit cap (excluding after the occasional sale), so new players quit after realizing they'll never find a group for the first dungeon or to team up. This also means outside the noob zone, below cap, chat is dead.

2) Funcom - their customer service is probably the worst in the business and their forum bans are often hilarious. Mention a bug? It's a feature. Banhammer strikes.

3) Fanboys - I don't know why, but the game has too many OMG I'm so L33T fanboys. Not to say all, or even most ppl, but they're very vocal in chat and on forums. If you mention any difficulty or bugs, they'll say stuff like, "Go play WoW." They're also anti-noob. When you hit cap, there'll always be someone who'll complain you never ran X/Y/Z before.

4) Playing a healing deck is hard and virtually no one levels using one. Healing raids is hard. Some groups insist on leech healers, which is heavily gear-dependent. When your game's already short healers, much less good ones, probably not a good idea to do this.

There are, as of last I played, no smart AoE heals, too. Combine this with server lag, gfx lag, and the occasional bug and you have a problem.

5) Pvp is kinda meh

what is game what you talking about ?

I also would like to know, because except for 5 (matter of taste) the other points are so wrong... It made me laugh loud.

I really like TSW. And that being said I highly doubt this column does the game and its reception any favour. There are many good things that could be said about this game. This column concentrated completely on the wrong ones: those that are actually a matter of taste. You can't argue about taste without looking like a complete moron ....

Agree 100%.

I love this game. I played all themepark out there and only this one kept me addicted, but I didnt like this article at all. As a veteran I could write something relevant for each aspect presented AND without offending anyone here. And although I like TSW a lot, I know that theres a lot of good games out there. This is not a competition and I hope people dont start to hate the game because of a bad and offensive article.

I think the MMORPG.COM rank is more accurate since its based in a thousands of players votes.

The combat is fine and complex If you get to the end game raid and stuff... Animations could be better though. IMO this is the only themepark MMO worth playing nowadays because you have all good things in 1 package. Best dungeons, story, quests, immersion, community. The combat that so many people claim to be clunky, is so much better than the big WoW, for exemple, and nobody complain about WoW combat of just spamming the same button during all leveling process. It could be better, yes, like GW2 and Tera, but how many MMOs out there have good combat AND animations? And honestly, I prefer TSW with its "clunky" (in the eyes of some) combat and great in everything else than GW2 perfect combat/animations and lacking in all the other aspects.

I think TSW biggest problem is not only the combat, but the real life feel of the game since a lot of people say that they prefer Fantasy MMOs. Its a matter of taste and the devs knew the game wouldnt be for everyone. I am fed up of Orcs, Elfs and Dwarfs...

Back to the topic, I RP myself in the game too, and since my cabal has a lot of RP events I think its easier for me not to try to be something different. I always carry my sword and big demonic hammer in the back and I wouldnt chicken If I was to leave in TSW world. I would propably be an investigator and try to solve all mysteries and get lores (like my character now). The thing I would love is an Aghata system to travel the world. So great!

In my opinion "The Secret World" is missing. Good story, perfect business model for people that don't play very much and enough room to grow ingame if you choose to ...

I second that.

The combat felt good to me at first in the first month too, then I got deeper into the game and it got annoying and tedious and now I can't stand playing it, it feels very one dimensional and killing mobs takes way too long.  The TTK ration is a bit high in this game.

If you tried FFXIV, then the TTK in TSW is nothing compared to that.

I play FFXIV here and there, found it nowhere near as bad as TSW.  Sorry, maybe it's all about the perception but I just found TSW combat annoying, especially in later zones when you have to swap skills around just to do damage to particular mobs.  And this on regular mobs, not elites or dungeon ones where I would expect that extra level of detail.  No, this is on regular run of the mill mobs and it just bogs me down and makes me tired and then I find myself not logging in.

So using the same abilities and having mobs where you don't need to change tactics isn't boring?

Nope.  Not for leveling purposes.  The quest itself is the goal and fun.  You are also assuming that there can't be a nice middle ground of combat difficulty, that doesn't require changing SKILLS.  Leave tactical fighting for longer fights, you know, boss fights.  I want my quest grinding mobs to be evenly challenging and go down fast.  The problem is you end up having cookie cutter builds that have to be used in order to get certain mobs down in the current game and it completely ruins any freeform builds or unlimited customization in a system that is huge and should be freeform.  I have the same issue with Rift, only certain builds really work well, all the rest end up being lackluster or gimped in some way.

There is only 1 map where you need to change builds in 2 places (far from each area). You can use deck manager addon to change fast or use a build with no afflictions + focus attack that can be used to solo every other area... I didnt change my build in the hole process os lvling because I was lazy.

Leveling up dosnt require any skill. You are only forced to strategicaly use the ability wheel when you start dungeoning an raiding.

TSW combat seems simple but in reality is very complex if you really put the time to study it. This is the difference of doing 2.5k / 3k dps and get to 5k to 6k dps on NY raid. Some people may not like it... simple a matter of taste. I love it and I am also the one pushing the dps numbers (when I am not tanking).

This was the only MMO that trully made me care about the story and missions... I like the combat, the feel, the dungeons, the raids, the community (the best imo)... I hope the game continue to develop for at least 10 more years. Happy birthday TSW!
TSW not on the list?

I have account and played all 3 of them a lot.  Choose TSW by far to be my primary MMO.

You usually skip story when theres a wall of text, but when its very well made and fully voice acted, you will pay attention for sure. The NPCs are charismatics and the story is so great that it goes beyond game (ARGs). Also the best quests so far in a MMO with investigation and subterfuge missions. And the dungeons so well made with little to no trash and interesting bosses, like Machine Tyrant from Hell Raised. I like the ability well too, it makes you think in a "deck" with sinergy. I am playing in Tokyo now and some missions there made me have nightmares (no spoillers).

One advice If you decide to play TSW. Dont rush the game. Enjoy the quests, fully search each area, find lores (and read them), try to finish alone the investigation missions (omg some of them are HARD)... The jorney is great!

I am not saying that GW2 and WoW are not good games, but they have problems already stated in posts before mine.

Is there still a decent population in TSW? Like enough to do content? I would like to get back into it since it is B2P but haven't simply because I'm afraid that it doesn't have enough population.

I keep my NY Raid and NM dungeon runs on CD... And mostly pugging. Very easy to find groups. Yesterday i run a group of new players at Normal Mode dungeons, so they could equip and get lore. The population increased with Tokyo release. Aghata is full :)

Carbine's decision to focus end game on just hardcore content will break it in time. Only aprox 2% of MMMOs community are hardcore players, so when everyone reachs maximum level how many people will continue playing? I am not saying they should stop it, but create a level of difficult for normal / casual gamers with rewards not so far from the hardcore content. I dont play WS for many reasons, but I would like this game to succed.

Like I said before, GW 2 is a great game. Very beautiful enviroment and polished. The problem is the absence of end game.

They could have made a game like GW 1 with a lot of skills to chose and make decks, lots of horizontal progression. It was great theorycrafting and hunting skills in the World. This was what I was looking for, as a GW 1 lover.

Or they could have made a game with vertical progression, raids, well made dungeons that drop significant things, etc.

They lacked in both aspects. WvW is not good enough to hold players, since zerging does not appeal to a lot of people. When the most stacked server will always win theres not much to do there. Also the PvP system (capture and keep a point) doens't promote build variaty. Dungeons and fractals cant hold players either, because of lack of strategy to beat them (defiance I am looking to you). You can just zerk everything.

Now i have 7 lvl 80 (1 of them full ascended and infused), mats for 2 epic weapons and dont even think about playing it. It was the best 4 months experience I had in a MMO, but after that not much to do.

Just wondering how many are there that - as myself - does not return to this game for sole purpose of button mashing caused by single limited toolbar for active abilities. And I already feel burden of this in Wildstar that I'm liking every day more but at the same time that single toolbar limite is just ... to limiting to enjoy on long run mainly as abilities pile up.

What you cant see is that limited toolbar in a game with 500+ skills is what makes things so interesting. You need to create a sinergy between your 8 actives and 8 passive abilities like a deck. That alone creates a lot of strategy and theorycraft. Its the future for most of new MMO games.

You can play TSW button mashing as a dps, but you will never archive max potential (wont even be competitive in a group). I wont talk about the tank and leech healing roles, because theres not even a rotation for this specs. Its just reactive.

Also, in games with limitless toolbars like WoW, for max dps, tank, heal,  you mostly use 4-5 abilities with each class and 1 or 2 CDs. You can even macro them, If you know what you are doing. And before you say anything, I played WoW for 6 years in a hardcore raid guild that disbanded in MoP.

I am proud to say that I did 90% of the investigation missions alone without "help"... But some of them took me weeks :(

I love them and will play them again someday!

1. EVE has a great and mature community and its the best sandbox out there. But If you dont like open "world" PvP, forget it.

2. TSW is the best themepark nowadays imo (and in the opinion of a lot of people since its always top 3) and the skill wheel is great, but Its really a matter of taste. I love the "deck" system where you have all abilities but can only conbine a number of them. Its a lot like GW 1 a game that I really like even today. Also, TSW is not a fantasy MMO, so not for everyone, but for me its great. I am tired of elves and dwarfs.

3. GW 2 would be a good game for you, but since you had problems with the custom service (i never had) I understand youir opinion. Its a great game, but sadly they lacked in a) make a game for the funs of GW1, with a lot of horizontal progress; b) make a game for the ones that didnt like GW1, with a lot of vertical progression. Theres no endgame or skills enough... I have 7 lvl 80 chars there, with all the aesthetic things you might want, but Its very hard nowadays to play the game since Season 1 of WvWvW was terrible... and WvW is not enough for an end game.

4. You can try Wildstar, but the game is not for me. Too much like WoW and I am tired of it. But If you liked WoW, Wildstar is a better version of it, although I think they are making a big mistake with the raids concepts. Only time will tell.

The things above are just my humble opinion.
