You introduce an extremely good topic, OP.  My opinion is that it's a very interesting approach to achieving long term involvement from players and modders alike.  It sort of makes me wish that I had the skills to submit one.   As for being fair, I cannot comment because I do not know the programming side of things.

My concern  with this system is that programmers will need to figure out exactly how Sony monetizes the content that produces the income -- which features attract the most players and at the same time entice players to spend actual real dollars.  Once this strategy materializes and becomes widespread knowledge, I fear that a lot of creativity will be lost at the expense of the drive toward maximizing profit.

And although I do feel that any player-created content is worth the experiment and at least initially offsets the damages, I would caution Sony to prepare for pervasive abuses of security, content theft, copying, and other infringements that any money makings web based system usually introduce.

I criticized the game when I first tried the beta a while back, but in that case I had played to only level 5 or so.  The OP's points about the inability to customize the UI is a valid point.  Also, the mini map overlay does not work properly in some parts of the game.

But after having now played up to level 32, I am enjoying the game.  The downside is that the game does have some of the usual types of quests, such as go fetch X amount of Y, and those mobs are way too crowded together, similar to most Eastern style games, yet I was surprised by the size and detail of the cities and world map in this game, as well as the number of quests to do.

The flying on and taming of dragons is pretty much the hook of this game, although I personally actually like the quest writing as well as the ability to train in mounted combat and mastery skills.  As I said, I am only in the low 30's atm, so all I can say is that I am having fun; I think most reviewers gave up on this after only a few levels, and it's my opinion that you would be doing yourself a disservice by dismissing this game so quickly.

At my level, it's not pay to win yet, so I am keeping my fingers crossed as I go.  Unfortunately, most updates are only for the marketplace, but on the flipside -- pretty much everything that your character needs drops frequently, namely, gear and potions.

You have to take into account that when WoW was released, there simply were not as many MMO players, or MMO sites like this one and others that help generate publicity.

Also, although gw2 was a fast selling game, I would bet that those that left the game within the first six months also set record numbers.   I personally enjoyed gw2 for a few months but after that, it got quite boring, to me at least.  Obviously, gw2 has hired this research group to publicize statistics that are completely one sided, in an effort to bolster their player base.  Duh.  Most large scale games could hire a similar 'research' group to find unique qualities about their particular release, but that does not make those games any better or worse.  Welcome to MMO politics.

Personally, I don't care much for the one-size-fits-all approach that has prevailed in recent MMO's.  It's obviously driven by the developer's desire to appeal to the largest market segment and thereby maximizing their subscription base, but in my opinion this approach detracts from the overall value and enjoyment of the game.  I do understand the reasoning behind it; it's just that I don't particularly like it.  I think that there should be a place for MMO's that cater to ten to fourteen year old players, but to integrate every demographic into one MMO causes the game to sacrifice some of it's personality and enjoyment.

Selfishly speaking, I would like to see an MMO that is strictly suited for more mature players; a game without the carrot and stick approach, a game with a high degree of difficulty, a game that requires some intelligence factor, one that does not lead from point A to point B so easily, etc.  I feel that games should offer it's player base a true challenge, something to lose-- not just a bit of risk but a giant scoop of risk with every action or non-action taken.

Please, developers, stop giving players only one or two dialogue response choices [PS: what's up with all the games that give us only one NPC interaction response choice? How is that a decision on our part?]  I know you work your tails off to bring these games to market and I personally don't envy the thousands of hours of design and programming work that you have to do (most of which attracts endless criticisms and ire), yet I still yearn for the ultra difficult game with a plethora of choices to make; give us a game that requires human beings that play it well, don't give us a game that just requires human beings.

My favorite part of this game was the character creation.  I don't know why, but I can spend an hour designing my character in games that have decent character creation systems.  This one is a bit different but I liked it for some reason.  After that, however, I personally could not find much to hold my attention for too long.  The dragon taming was a bit of fun at first I suppose.  The cut scenes were not really transitioned very well, but they at least gave it a go.  Got a couple of hours of enjoyment out of this game after character creation, but I think some of you might enjoy it for a bit longer.

As far as I'm concerned, if a game can add something new to the MMO genre, even it is just slightly new, then it is worth noting.  This game did not hold my interest but they gave us this dragon taming thing.  Neverwinter online did not hold my interest for very long either, but I still appreciate it because it laid the groundwork for improved foundry systems in future games.  As long as a game can add one piece of the puzzle to the future ultimate MMO, then it is not a waste imho.

damn you OP, please hush up about this.  You are ruining our master plan of being able to continuously play games for free while letting other people fund the game by buying elegant earrings and dolphin shaped facial tattoos.
"We’re also overwhelmed by your positive support and patience during the downtime"

looks like those everything-is-peachy and positive-spin-on-everything press release writers never get a break.  I'm pretty sure that they were inundated with positive feedback and player love during this crisis.

Lower quality graphics = more computers that can handle game

More cartoon like game = more kids can play with mommy's credit card

Less reading of lore and quests = more players

Simpler combat = more players

Player Rarely Dies = more players

Instant gratification = more players

Sorry to say this but we all know that the companies have done their due diligence and run their market research to know what to do and what not to do.  They realize that very few player actually read the quests and lore beyond level 5; they know that difficult quest-lines turn off many subscribers; they surely know that the the new target market is the ADHD crowd which needs instant satisfaction and god-like abilities out of the box.  And the developers no longer care about the 30+ year old crowd.  It's the 8 to 15 year old gamers that are in the cross-hairs now.  Sorry.

It is sad that so many gamers have become basically indifferent to others in the game, and I don't feel that this anti-social wave of behavior is limited to gaming.  Just walk into any restaurant these days and you see couples not even speaking with one another; they just sit there tapping away on their iphones.  Same is true in waiting rooms or any social environment in which people used to converse regularly.

Back to topic, perhaps a creative solution for this anti-social mindset should be incorporated into the game world... such as a limited number of players belonging to each instance of a shard... a 'family' if you will.   An Instance Leader or Senate could be elected after several weeks of play.  Rude players could be ousted from the instance.  Other socially unacceptable acts could be reprimanded.  I don't feel that forced integration should be required, but it should at least be an option in future games, leaving the balance of players to fend for themselves in the outside world.

I don't really see how you can separate real life from playing games.  Playing games is part of our real lives, as much a part as anything else.  Our realities are just our own individual perceptions, all taking place inside of our minds.  What is real life?  Our job or our family or our pet or mowing the grass?  Seeing the stars or bird crap on a car window?  As long as time is passing and we are participating in any MMO, it is real life.  In terms of what is real, there is no difference between playing a game and attending a class, except for our perceived image of what society deems important.  Fun is the same, it is dependent on how each person perceives it and therefore is as subjective as an opinion or a favorite color; it is unique to each person based on their experiences and genetic makeup.
We had 4 girls in a row.  What are the odds of that?  This is why I play MMO's :  to hide.
Neverwinter.  So disappointing.  I was really looking forward to this game and after 2 minutes in it I couldn't take it.  I eventually went back after deciding to accept it for what it was instead of what the expectations were but still it felt like some candyland asian fairydust mmo.  Played to level 20 something and never died. Switched classes to what others were saying was the weakest --- control wizard --- and played it up to 18 and still never died.  Just because it's f2p doesn't mean it cannot be uninstalled.
I played the closed betas of Neverwinter and found myself getting bored after 3 or 4 hours.. bored as in not wanting to ever play again.  I never had those feelings in NW1 or NW2... in those games I had to literally force myself to stop playing and then I would lay in bed thinking about it and sometimes I would spring back up and log back in to do something that I had thought of.  That kind of enthusiasm is not in me when I play Neverwinter.  I still have high hopes for the Foundry though, and although it does not offer as much creative freedom as the original toolsets, it's still a step in the right direction for mainstream MMO's and we should all be excited, if not for this game then for things to come because now a new standard has been set.

Hey guys, let's hear your opinion of which sorts of quests that you despise the most and then those that you enjoy.

And please add to this list of categories if you can or suggest new types that are not so common ....

  • Kill X amount of Y quests
  • Collect X amount of Y quests
  • Discovery quests - go find a specific item or region
  • Assasination quests
  • Escorting an NPC quest (if anybody faves this one I wil faint)
  • Visiting NPC's
  • Crafting quests
  • Delivery quests
  • Zone triggered / group quests
  • BAM hunts

Not a hater or lover of EA, but nonetheless this was an interesting read, insofar as it show just how much influence gamers can collectively have on actual company perception and performance.

http://venturebeat.com/2013/04/05/ea-executive-peter-moore-responds-to-worst-company-in-america-tournament/

Keep in mind that this is not a vote for 'the worst GAMING company, but rather for the worst company overall. I think that Mr. Moore has properly responded to this 'nomination', choosing to view it as a challenge instead of a barrier.   What is your opinion?

No MMO truly offers the option to be 'bad' and advance in skill or level, without penalty in either challenge or reward.
not a true mmo but you might give path of exile a try, it's basically an instanced lobby d3 type of game but for some reason that escapes me, it is fun. It's not a long term solution but it can easily entertain you for a month or so.
The environment graphics look good for alpha, the combat obviously needs work.  Reminds me of Sacred meets d3.  Nothing new here though, however, that seems to be the point of a nastalgia type game, although personally, I don't see any fun factor to this, even assuming the game gets drastic improvements over what the video shows.  We've all got the old games on our bookshelf, perfectly preserved in the box, and we can get them out and play them at will; I for one don't see the point of creating this.

WTF?

You have not even touched it. You have not seen it in real. You have not seen the Final Version of "whatsoever" and you are already asking for "How to improve the Game"

Are you kidding mate? Or did you had some bottles of Beer to much?

Man......

I think Devs and / or Publishers should not show anything anymore until one month before having the Game ready.

This only gets worse from Game to Game.......and im soooo sick of it tbh.

I feel that one of the main purposes of these forums is to give us gamers a place to voice our opinions.  I see nothing wrong with the OP's thread.  Of course nobody has played the final release version but that does not mean that we cannot discuss what we like or dislike about what we HAVE seen.  If the thread does not interest you, then please move to another, there is no need to bash the poster for asking a legitimate question.  So what if we like to pick apart the good and bad of a game prior to release?  That is what this whole site is for.
