[General Article] Darkfall: Unholy Wars: Review In Progress #1
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 4/24/13 8:33:45 PM
Former UO player here, who has spent an awful lot of time in WoW, dabbled in EVE and been looking for a new sandbox/pvp full loot game. Missed out on DF 1.0 to be honest, so was a little reluctant to spend 39 euros on a new game, whilst committing to a sub. First impressions are that the game is a lot of fun, although picking your class is important as you'll have one char per account. Started as a warrior before deleting/re-rolling as a primalist just to fit my play-style. Graphics etc are pretty fine. You can look a little 'samey' as other pcs, but I guess thats something that can be expanded on, when resources permit in the future. Game mechanics are a little odd to those who may have played UO or WoW/Wow Clone in the past. Doesn't take too long to get used too though. All in all, quite happy with the money spent, having fun and looking forward to developing a new guild.

I ran into that mmorpg guy that loves to irritate you in games, at a Gamestop today.

This reminds me of the time I went to pick up my wife from her Christmas Party, which was taken over by international terrorists. Luckily I'm a cop and I managed to save everyone and kill the bad guys. The bit were I had no shoes and had to walk over broken glass was a pain though. All the best. John M |

To be honest, I voted no for your game, even though I'd love a platform with 'near endless character progression system with emphasis on combat, and adventure.' The reason? You'd exclude a lot of people who are necessary for a game to work. You need people who grind, who play auction houses etc. to make your community grow. It's all part of a dynamic world and when you start to impose artificial systems, i.e. controlled auction houses, you'll take out the human interaction and you might as well just play a single player game. MMOs typically give you enjoyment based on the time you invest in it. If you are not good with auction houses, then try to learn and improve yourself? One thing I have learn't from MMOs, from days of early UO to date is that there is always someone better than you 1v1, be it PvP, PvE, Auction Houses ... pretty much whatever. However, when you are part of a great guild, you'll overcome this. I don't want to play a game where everyone has the exact same experience. I certainly would like a game with a much more indepth progression system; however, not because of artificial xp caps and the like. You are correct to assume your game would be niche, i.e. a low amount of people would be interested. It would certainly be a labour of love, rather than a commercial success. Good luck all the same! |

[Column] World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria: From BlizzCon to Landfall

Played from launch to Cataclysm and then pretty much lost interest in the continual grind/dailies affair. I havn't seen a single feature in the new expansion that would tempt me back to be honest and especially put off by the new talent trees. Was also pretty dissapointed with Diablo III, which cost a pretty penny, so I'm loathe to give Blizzard more dosh for something I'm not sure I'll enjoy. I've yet to find a decent replacement though, I didn't mind SWTOR, but that has stagnated pretty badly, especially from a PvP point of view. |

Spent £40 on the game, played about 10 hours and wasn't really impressed. A few nice ideas, such as the investigation quests, however the gameplay was nothing new, pvp uninspired and generally didn't keep my interest. The 70%-ish scores are probably a good reflection of the game. There is probably a decent single player game lurking around in there, but certainly nothing that would make me want to pay a monthly subscription on top of the initial outlay. I thought it was a decent idea though, and would be happy to see it suceed. |
