As someone said earlier, Yahtzee is not generally a fan of MMO's, so this is to be expected. The best one could hope for is "it's shit, but not COMPLETE shit."

It needs a lot of work, but it's not a bad game or anything, at least so far (I'm only level 12). I am liking the combat and quests, but haven't gotten into much else yet. Only like an hour in Cyrodiil, though it was fun. A shame that leveling is generally restricted to PvE, but meh.

But yeah, it can be kinda buggy at times, and the loading screens can sometimes take a while to finish up, but nothing game breaking for the most part for me, as of yet.

One bug I hate, is that randomly during combat, I'll suddenly not be able to attack with any abilities or my basic attacks, I'll start moving really slow, and my health and stamina don't  recharge (or at least very slowly, not that it matters), and all I can do is wait to be killed and hope it's gone when I respawn. Sometimes it persists through death and I need to re-log. Happened to me like 3 times so far, and hasn't really been overly annoying, but it is basically a cheap death here and there, so kinda sucks.

But I like the world, character creation, character and ability animations, and the quests quite a bit. I liked the few quests up to now where they give you decisions more than the rest.

I realize not everyone is into the story and quests, but they're definitely what makes the game, imo, so if you aren't into the story, you might get bored really quick.

Sorry, anything with the name DayZ attached to it seems to be pure garbage. Will also wait for H1Z1, SOE seems to be getting their act together quite nicely.

And another troll, showing up in the thread merely to post that anything with the name DayZ in it seems to be "pure garbage." Did your comment come out of classic trolling 101? You judge everything by its name alone? Back up your claim.

There's a difference between trolling and stating an opinion. In fact, if you didn't respond to it, it would have been fine, but you made an attempt to turn posters against this person as "trolling" by bringing attention to it.

I don't think development on a MMO can slow down. If they have to wait a year, or two, to secure more funding then the technology they've already spent time on will be dated and they'll have to start all over again. I'm pretty sure this message is the final nail in the coffin.

As long as they are continuously keeping notes on current features in MMO's, and improving on their base ideas a bit as time goes on, it's not going to be a huge problem if it's a year or two down the road. People who want to play now, are wanting to do so based on the old-school concepts, after all, which isn't exactly going to get anymore dated than it already is.

Graphics are a different story. Doesn't look like they're going for a stylized look that will hold up for years, so likely won't look the greatest down the road. But still, graphics don't make the game.

I'm gonna keep an open mind and see how things play out, but for the most part, it's true that this doesn't look good.

Maybe SOE will bail them out again, get rid of them and add another game to their roster? ;)

Why was it necessary to have such an overly long OP?

TL;DR: "Quests suck, because my opinion is that they suck."

This is literally the only argument available.

Balreth, Rise of Brothers - heck entrance to Crow's Nest is bugged.... I've stopped counting how many quests are fubard.

Some of these it's a matter of logging out and back in to find that one instance that is not bugged - but it's so annoying.

Balreth - I killed him 4 times before it worked - thanks to a 6 page thread in official forums (the key is dying to him - exiting instance and then killing him quick - yes lame)

My theory - the problem is getting worse as more folks go through content - once an instance has a broken quest - it stays broken it seems. So those that did a bunch of them yesterday probably worked fine, but as more people are doing them there are more broken instances, so there are more broken quests.

I think they need to do a daily server restart until this is fixed.

Rise of brothers - I've logged out and back in probably 15 times before I found one priest that I could talk to - the other priest - completely bugged no matter how many times I've tried - nobody in the zone could find a working instance for that one.

Welcome to the launch of any new MMO.

That's just not true, I played many MMORPGs at launch from 1 to max level without a single broken quest.

But you know what? It's besides the point - the state of other games at launch makes NO difference - it doesn't make any excuses for ESO having so many broken quests at this point.

[mod edit]

Most MMOs still have quests and other content that get bugged long after launch. That's why patches & bug fixes still exist for them even when nothing new has been added.

Hard to remember any MMO's that have had a ton of bugged quests at launch. Usually it's mainly server and log in issues.

From watching streams and such, I've noticed quite a few players experiencing bugged quests and having to restart the game, etc.. Likely not game-breaking, but meh.

Still, game seems pretty smooth otherwise. Won't be getting it for a while, if at all, though.

The first mmo developed for consoles?

Phantasy Star Online was on the Dreamcast, Gamecube and Xbox around 1999/2000 and up to 2006 and was one of the best online experiences money could afford at that point on any given consoles, and in general.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LNIkmPi6VQ

PSO wasn't really an mmo.

Yes, yes it was.

Massive= Check

Multi player= check

Online = Check

Role Playing Game = Check

And it is considered so by pretty much every gaming site or online encyclopedia.

Hold on, how many people could play it? Did it have a persistent world? Cause if not, then

Massively (not Massive) Multiplayer = Fail.

On a different note Isn't TESO the first AAA MMO release? Not sure if Final Fantasy is considered AAA. If it is, then that was the first AAA MMO on consoles.

The first "AAA" console mmo was Everquest Online Adventures on PS2.

Edit: Actually I was wrong. FF11 released the year prior to EQOA.

PSO was far from being a "AAA" title. The game had few maps, was extremely linear, andpossessed a low production quality. The graphics were about the only real thing it had going for it. Full of bugs and constantly ( and easily ) hacked. The only ones who even knew of it outside of Japan at the time were a small percentage of Dreamcast owners, who themmselves were already a small percentage of console owners as it was.

And I agree, PSO on Dreamcast was not an mmo. It was a limited capacity lobby game like the Diablo series ( although there are those less intelligent souls who think Diablo games are mmos too ).

Nope I think ( if FF wasn't ) that PSU ( Phantasy Star Universe ) was the first AAA MMO on a console.

Still amused by you thinking EQOA was the first AAA console MMO , ha ha , you got anymore jokes no please reply.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

FF11 was first in Japan (2002), but in North America, EQOA was the first in 2003, and then FFXI came out in 2004. PSU didn't come out 'til 2006.

the fact that is the first true AAA MMO developed for consoles...

First? Not even close.

Really? Name a few more....

What do you call DC:UO?

I dunno...what should I call it? Besides a true AAA MMO. Now...name a few more....since what Lord said was "not even close". There must be MANY that have been made already.

You know that even the original EverQuest was on consoles, right? PS2. That was in 2003. So it's true, "not even close."

Also DC:UO, as was said, FFXI, FFXIV, Defiance,  and possibly more. Can include Free Realms, as well, if you wanna, but that's more of a kiddy mmo.

I wrote this review.

'Hard as hell' is both a pro and a con yes. Not a typo. The game's difficulty can be part of its charm, as well as absolutely maddening. Go an hour with a massive amount of souls, lose them all to a cheap shot, and come back and tell me that's easy to take. So in that sense, it's a great part of the game's identity but also something that makes you want to turn it off. Double-edged.

Also I see last generation as a con. We're moving into a new generation of consoles and from a purely objective view it wouldn't have been too difficult to upscale this to the more powerful machines - not offering this option was a misstep as it's hard to go back a graphical step once you've played the newer stuff and seen the new 'shiny' so to speak.

BUT this is just my viewpoint, and my personal gripes. You will have yours. As much as some people might say, a review is never going to be impartial - our own tastes, thoughts, and general feelings will always come into play, we've just got to back it up with some sort of reasoning.

Actually there really are no Cheap Shots in the game.  From what I have experienced every time I died in any DS game its all due to ignorance or me messing up.

After the first time you experience a "o shit were did that come from" the game basically starts screaming every time that is about to happen.  So for you to make the claim for "cheap shots" it really just shows your lack of understanding of the game, and lack of research done about the design of the game before playing it.

Also while the review is mostly praise you give it an 8.5 from what?  Just adding up your thoughts on your categories and dividing by 7 gets you 8.71 yet it drops by .21 which is almost a letter grade from what exactly?

This is a really terrible review for a SPRPGs on this site, well.... Your not going to get very many people coming here for the reason of looking at SPRPG reviews.

The hit boxes "seem" to be off to a lot of people, since when I watch streams I always hear them say "I was not even close to that!"

Most times it's true, they weren't near it, but it's because they made the game harder to evade than the original. You have to time your dodge as you would a parry, and not just start rolling around like crazy. People don't seem to have the timing down for the most part.

But it's true that cheap shots may occasionally happen, but for the most part, it's human error that racks up your deaths.

So why was someone who didn't "get" the past games chosen to review this? Why did this game get an 8.5 when the reviewer had to really struggle to find cons; one of which being the same as a pro?

Very odd, if you ask me.

IMO, the team currently working on D3 is in the middle of pulling off was Lord of Destruction did for D2, and making it a way better game than the original. I just hope the storyline is better this time around, as the gameplay is definitely 10x better already.

"...simply due to the fact that the options of Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Jew are all extremely different."

It's funny, I read a couple reviews previously that said they play similarly with slight differences. I hope they are as different as you say though.

Gonna get this game as soon as possible and play the hell out of it regardless, though.

I thought this widely known already. Yoshi-P said a while back he wanted to have at least like 5 mini-games available before putting it out.

I personally think the PvP should  be focused and not have a large area where I could potentially spend an hour looking just to die and spend another hour wandering around.

It's way bigger than GW2 WvWvW, there's even more running around.

That... is not good.

Few MMO's these days are group-oriented outside of instances/dungeons and PvP. Why would you expect otherwise, ESPECIALLY in an Elder Scrolls game?

It might not be as player interactive as you want, but to expect otherwise these days from a AAA company is... well, not the smartest thinking.

You have to look to Indy or Kickstarter MMO's for the type of gameplay you want. AAA Developers aren't going to put millions of dollars into a niche market.

Underwater content never crosses my mind, and I actually find it more of an annoyance than anything when I am pushed into it. This being the main reason for not buying it does not compute for me.
I like the look of it, and have always loves the Mana series, but I won't bother buying it to play on a phone.

I played WoW for 6 years and quit during cataclysm.

One thing I appreciated about WoW is that if you payed your fee, no one had any advantage. There was no boosts, cash shop or any such thing. Now they seem to be trying to get some more money before this long outdated game runs it course. Bad move.

People seem to be unable to separate from WoW for fear that their addiction will not be fulfilled by other games, but they are wrong. There are games like Rift that give you all WoW was giving, plus some new things, and are much more recent and better looking. Not to mention that new games are being developed, that are in every way beyond comparition better then WoW. Its hard to make that step and quit WoW, believe me I know it. But once I made it, I never regreted it. Rift is my new happy place :D

First off, WoW is not dying anytime soon, and they're not only just now starting to offer convenience for pay, they've been doing it for a LOOOOONG time. Hell, they even first introduced their cash shop back 5-6 years ago, as people were placated with the whole charity side of the item available.

I've quit WoW many, many times, and tried other games, including Rift (which was a poor clone at best, at least at launch). Nothing has compared to the polish and quality of WoW, and that is why people keep coming back.

I am playing again now, in fact.

Gotta love that GW2 map.
