I just resubbed last night and I am totally clueless as to what to do. I feel like there's a ton of things to do, but I don't know how to find them or where to start.  When I stopped playing last year I was a lvl 50 paladin decked out in mostly Darklight gear and some allagan stuff, doing Coil1+2. How do I progress from here? Do i have to start from Coil again or can i gear up by doing the new dungeons? What kind of tomes/currency do people collect now to get better gear?

If any kind soul would point me in the direction, I would greatly appreciate it!

Personally, if I quit for a long period of time, I'd just start over from scratch (and I did recently). But in any case, run some dungeons, complete your challenge log, check out the new hunts, do some beast tribe quests that start at the 3 GC locations, basically get used to playing again. I've yet to set foot into Coil, but they have apparently made progressing through a lot of it much easier now, so it might not be so  bad. Also check out Crystal Tower, which is easier than coil after you get the swing of things. I'm only just about to hit 50, so I'm not the best judge of what to do, but this seems about right.

Also new main story missions, side quests like Hildebrand stuff, new primal fights, etc.

Seems like this conversation is coming up at least once a month.

But, as Nitth said, "I think individually we all know what we want, But collectively we cant reach a consensus." Seems to sum it up relatively well.

Or at the very least, we know what we want, but in our heads, everything we want is better than what we want imagined by others.

Stoked for the new changes. Sucks the servers went down so early tonight, but whatever, should be worth it. Looking forward to giving the Hunt and Frontline a go.
People living in the past can't appreciate the present.
I can't help but think this thread was started ironically.

I'm sure there are worse people out there. Many, likely on this very forum. He is a man, and like all men, he has made mistakes.

But to hear the whining about him, you'd think all these people shit gold and piss rainbows.

No, there is saying in science that is this' if the balance of probability suggests something is not so, it probably is not so'

No there isn't.

You might have been too busy playing mmo's

You might be confusing a legal term with a scientific one...

Improbable outcomes happen all the time in scientific research. To imply what you just did is laughable.

Damon needs a pat on the back, have one buddy.  No-one knows why, but I think it will make you happy.

It's just another way of saying "if it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, and sounds like a duck, it's probably a duck". Except in reverse, since it's written as disproving something.

Doesn't seem like it's science or legal, just common sense at this point, albeit prettied up with fancy words. :P

Violence sells easily to the masses. Of course violent games will be created more often.

It's like back in the old days with gladiatorial arena's. People loved watching men kill themselves gruesomely, or get ripped apart by animals, or whatever else. This is just another way of portraying that, and to even be a part of it, without all the dreaded realism.

Nintendo seems to be doing their best to keep a large amount of their games lighthearted and child-friendly. I won't lie, I've been drawn to these games more often lately on Twitch streams and such, and very much am in the mood for such games without the over-the-top violence and gore.

But it's foolish to think that the scales will tip anytime soon.

Which came first, the dumbed down playerbase, or the MMO? ;)

For me personally, I find the character models and animations are absolutely awful, the quests are dull and nothing but a chore, the story is incredibly slow to start, and I just had no interest in it (though only played to 14), and the skill system just kept ringing in the back of my head as clunky and annoying.

Looks cool. Just unfortunate that, like all games like this, they don't give me character customization that I'd enjoy playing. I'd rather a somewhat older, rugged, bald type of look, but instead all I get to play is girly men.

The customization in this game is actually really good.

To the one that said poorly optimized...I run the game fine on max.

To the one that said you can't move while in combat, most mmorpgs are like that these days - having said that, some moves allow you to move while in combat.

If I can't get the type of character I described, I won't play the game.  I'm sure it's good for many people, though, just from what I've seen of character creation on youtube videos, there's no bald/shaved head option (which should be in every game, I mean, how frickin' hard can it be to add?), and I'm not a big fan of the hairstyles. So, it's a no go, unfortunately.

i find it hard to understand why its character creation so important to you

look at world of warcraft, it has a character creation so primitive, yet the game has millions of players

and the reason this is so, is because the game play is really well made and polished

you get  a good amount of loot - some is junk you sell for money, at other times you get something good that you put on to become more powerful

im talking about Vanilla 1.12.1, because thats the one im playing and the one i like the most - its just about enough hardcore and grindy for me... and with a good guild, you can do everything

when i played Swordsman, it only felt like a themepark - nothing worth wasting time on, the story can be called interesting, but everything about the game is bad

you take all your clothes off and still appear to have clothes on, i dont get it, the loot is scarce, you cant move around casting spells and only the character models look good, the NPCs look like they are from 2005

im really disappointed with this game, because i really like asian themed games, but they are all garbage, i dont know why the asian developers dont make a complete WoW clone for once, people will whine, but at least the game will be good

Because in WoW, regardless of simplistic character creation, I could still create a character I enjoyed the look of.  Bald, rugged, long-bearded Orc who looks like he's seen some shit, for example.

It was a bit too grindy, imo, but it had awesome mechanics. It was a social game. Very fun to just chill and play music in the cantina, or be a doctor or whatever just waiting for injured players to come get fixed up whilst talking to the others doing the same.

I do remember working for days grinding in the engineering or whatever just to make my fancy mouse droid. Was so happy when I got it just to have it follow me around, even though it was useless. I got over it quick enough, but whatever. lol

The combat absolutely sucked, though, so I stayed away from that as much as I could. I will admit I never got overly far into the game, though. Was fun for like the ... 2 weeks to a month somewhere that I played it.

It actually got stale rather quickly. Short-term fun, though.

I definitely don't envy them when they screw up like this. But whatever.

I am just glad I wasn't one of the thousands upon thousands of people apparently clamoring for a beta key, today.

It's true. Everyone I know gave up on this game due to the questing (that's only like 3 people, but whatever lol). It's absolutely terrible and bringing the game down.

They should have cut down the quests by half and gave the half they kept double the rewards to get people into the good chunk of the game. Or at least, make quests longer and more engaging to be worth the double rewards instead of what they have going on.

To have such fun, humorous trailers and then have such mind-numbingly monotonous questing is just odd.

Regardless, I've made my argument, and you've made yours, and neither of us are gonna win, so have fun with whatever game is working for you, and I'll do the same.

The amusing thing is in beta the GCD was actually 3 seconds.  After a lot of feedback the dev team decided to lower it another half a second and most people felt like it played better after that.

There's games out there that fulfill the more action-oriented combat.  This one has decided not to go that route.

I had no idea about the 3 second GCD. Was that overflow from the 1.0 game? I can't remember a ton about that since I only played it for a week or so.

But that's right. They lowered it a bit more, and they felt it went well enough with their design plans and adapted. If they thought a 1 second GCD would have helped the system, they would have done the same. As it stands, it's a good balance of action, strategy and reflex without resorting to a twitch gameplay style, which is definitely more niche in the MMORPG genre.

Combat would be really fun if they halved the gcd and cast times.

This.  While the combat is vastly superior to FFXI and XIV 1.0, the 2.5 second GCD is holding it back.

I don't understand this mentality. Faster does not equal better. I'm pressing keys for abilities nearly non-stop as it is. There's no need to be pressing even faster for the same result, and speed up animations to the point they aren't nearly as awesome and fun to see. They also couldn't get away with things like the Ninja jumping on top of the enemies for an attack and stuff.

No, their current system is definitely not holding it back. Your "ideal" system would, however.

And that's fine for you.  Nothing wrong with that.

I, on the other hand, don't need 2.5 seconds to decide what to do or what is the best course of action to take next.  The second i hit an ability, i already know what i'm going to do next depending on any number of factors based on mob interaction.  A 1 second GCD works best for me.

The majority of gameplay vids I've watched seem to indicate the same may be true for many others as well.  I see many players spamming their next attack button trying to get it to go off as soon as possible.

I understand why they have a long GCD and it has nothing to do with SE preferring it that way.

I went in expecting a somewhat basic combat system, and was surprised to find it amazing.

Combat is moderately fast-paced with a lot of moving around with telegraphing from enemy abilities. The best part about the combat not being crazy fast, is that I am not constantly staring at the floor waiting for these telegraphs. I watch the enemy as it does animations to give an idea of what's happening, or read the dialogue as well, so it's not a singular non-stop distraction like WildStar.

But if you're into a game where you don't stand around at all as you shoot off your abilities, then there are likely better games for you.

But the Primal fights in FFXIV are also really tough and require quick responsiveness and coordination to get through. They're just not the majority of the game.

It also helps the combat system that the character models and animations are some of the best there is at the moment and really sells it.
