Also what about Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn?

I haven't seen any sites mention it, so I figure it wasn't there.

I didn't see any of it yet, but it did say on the PAX schedule that there was a Final Fantasy booth or whatever at some point, and that it featured FFXIV:ARR. But whether the game was playable there or not is another question.

FFXIV:ARR was at PAX east, I don't believe they had a booth, or if they did i must have missed it. They did have a 1 hour panel where they talked about the game and gave everyone beta keys which is supposed to start in a week's time. I'm new to final fantasy so i can't say much about it other than that it seemed like a fun game and the fans attending were exicited. I will give it a try once the beta comes out.

Sounds about right. Yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

This site is made for ALL things related to MMORPG's, not just the games YOU enjoy. These Scarlet Blade ads, as well as the game itself, might suck, but it's still a part of the genre, so why should they refuse them the right to advertise on here with their money?

You might think them stupid for doing it, but as a business, they'd be even more stupid not to accept these ads. I doubt this place is cheap to run.

This game seems like such a joke. I can't understand how ANYONE would ever want to play or throw money at this game in any way.

But whatever, to each their own. I supposed it's aimed at the type of people who would, say, roll an Elin in Tera.

I definitely agree with it being a step backwards for the genre, however.

still waiting for a link of some kind that solidly confirms this.  a blurb about local co-op tells me nothing about whether the DRM is active or not.

Link

Link

The no online connection bit was confirmed last month. Do some research on your own.

[mod edit]  Of the links you provided, only the second one has direct quotes to confirm.  Given it was written yesterday and is the only one of it's kind, it's not asking too much to be provided with it FROM A FRIGGIN NEWS WEBSITE LIKE THIS ONE.   FFS pull your head out.

He cites concern for duping with an AH, does that imply no online game trading of items at all?  Or just more BS from bliz I wonder.

[mod edit]

Here's a link that at least confirms the offline play and the no RMAH: http://penny-arcade.com/report/article/console-diablo-3-playable-offline-real-money-auction-house-removed-not-exac

Though the guy does say: “There were some technical reasons we had to go with offline, but again once you have an offline experience, even if we wanted to bring in the auction house, it just becomes problematic. How do you validate? How do you make sure there is no duping or any of that stuff?”

So it seems to mean no gold AH, as well. But we'll see how it progresses. I find it funny that he basically says they were forced to go offline due to technical limitations. Don't think that Blizzard has learned anything -- in reality, if there weren't technical limitations, the PS3/4 version of D3 would have had DRM and AH just like the PC.

Sounds like this game is definitely not ready for launch in a little over a week. Wonder if they'll pull off some miracle patches before then.

If I had the ability to trade in my PC version for the PS3 version, I'd do it, but I'll never buy this game again. It sounds like it'll be WAY more fun on consoles than the PC version, however, which is a real shame for what was a PC-based series.

It'll sell well, no doubt, but it's really too bad they didn't release the original PC game with the same frame of mind. Hell, even if they wanted to keep some form of DRM and just removed the AH, I'd have been happy.

Well, I mean happy as long as I ignore the crappy storyline as well.

People can bitch about what a disappointing announcement this is, but I've known plenty of people who play card games, and while it's not my cup of tea, I know those people and the countless others in the worldl like them are gonna eat this up. I can see this becoming very popular.

He isn't saying anything different than what 99% of the forum users here say every day. You would think that the MMORPG.com forum community would be thrilled that an insider FINALLY agrees with them and their never-ending negative criticisms are now justified!!

I don't think the majority of people here are questioning whether he's right or wrong. This is really more about the source of the statement, and the irony of it all, as well as whether they believe he's just aiming for publicity to help his kickstarter game, and whether or not that in itself is a cash grab.

Did you read on why Tabula Rasa failed and that Richard Garriot sued  NCsoft for 28 million and won over his departure from Tabula Rasa?

I wouldn't want a publisher after that and do a kick starter instead.

Care to explain why it failed?

You should look at my earlier post in the thread.

Yes, the game was "rushed" out the door after only a 7ish year development cycle. ;)

Apparently Mr. Garriott had no clear vision for the actual game, and was just throwing out ideas and hoping for the best, so a couple years into it, he decided everything had to be redone from nearly scratch, then during the second version of the game, they still didn't have anything solid until just around the time NcSoft pushed the game out the door. By solid, of course, I mean a barely workable version of the game that wasn't very fun.

He wasted years of time and money on this game, NcSoft tried to screw him over for his stock options because of it all, but in the end, he sued them and won $27 million.

To be honest, both sides acted poorly at times, but ultimately, it was Garriott's lack of direction and shitty design skills that caused the game to fail. Nice and ironic.

Anyway, Garriott sued NcSoft because of lost money from stock options he lost from the departure, not because they somehow ruined his game. He did prove, however, that he's capable of making money regardless of whether or not he's any good at what he does.

Game sounds like it's progressing nicely, and it definitely is sounding better and better with every new bit of information.

I can see subs working for this game, but on the other hand, sub games have such a hard time succeeding.

I can also see a buy to play with an in-game shop for boosters and cosmetics, and paid future content (zones, levels etc) possibly being more successful.

May I also go out on a limb and say that not EVERY new MMO that comes out needs to be $15 a month. It was an abritrary number Sony made up with EQ and Blizzard stuck with the price. I'm sure $5-10/month would still be very profitable for them.

Actually, Subscription price for MMOs was $9.99mo until SWG released. That was the game that pushed the price to $14.99mo

Actually, Dark Age of Camelot came out a couple years before SWG, and it had the $15/month fee. It's the first one I've seen with it.

People say they hate grind, but when it is removed people whine about not having "enough to do."

because what they really mean, is that they hate games where there isn't much to do, except grind.

Actually what it really means is that some people like grind, but won't admit it.

Well if they like the activity, they it is no longer monotonous or unpleasant right?  Therefore it's not a grind anymore.

To some, doing something montonous or repititous is not unpleasant.

To some, being beaten senseless with a steel rod is a turn on.  And while I am in full support of risk-aware consensual kink, I'm not about to go proselytizing it's virtues to the skeptical.

(Although in fairness, I must admit that I have and likely will do so regarding other analogs...)

Unfortunately, there are more people who like being beaten with steel rods (and won't admit it) than you think.   I'm not one of them, just sayin...

That's not what's unfortunate.

What's unfortunate is when they ask for you to be beaten with a steel rod, and suggest that you're lying when you say you don't like it.

I feel a lot of people love to try to "overcome the impossible." People want to feel special somehow, and whether it's gaming or any other aspect of life, they enjoy being appreciated. If there's no challenge, they have no reason to play, and I believe they ARE lying. They just want an easier way to be recognized, even though that goes against the entire idea. They need to be fucked with, and they need to overcome it, and when they do, they believe themselves better people for it, even if that's not entirely true.

^ See what I mean?  ;)

I do! As long as there are options as to how you grind, I don't mind the grind. it's necessary.

A game without some sort of grind would get old and boring incredibly quick. With nothing to work towards, there's nothing to look forward to, thus no reason to continue playing.

In WAR, a lot of the problems with RvR might have been fixed if people were only participating in thee RvR lakes, but people preferred to use the battlegrounds, because it was a faster way to level.

For a game based on PvP, I think battlegrounds are a bad idea. You want as many people as possible out in the fields of the main land as possible, and you want systems that drive people to WANT to be there.

You can't have distractions like BG's if you want the game to last.

I like the idea of this always-online SimCity with interactions with other players/cities, but they just appear to have handled the launch poorly. Maybe I'll give it a shot in the future when the price drops and the servers are more stable.

Game communities were ruined long before the advent of LFG. People playing these days are, for the majority, not like the people that used to play MMO's. People aren't as social or as patient as they used to be. They just wanna kick back, solo as much as possible, then get in and out of the group stuff as fast as possible with the most reward.

Since the majority of people are like this, it only makes sense for the LFG tool to be available. Queue up, rock the instance, leave.

I don't think it really has any major effect on community, except for there being less spamming for LFG in chats now. Some still do it, but not many.

Originally posted by PerfArt PvE does not equal rpg. We are just debating semantics now. It's a game based in a fantasy setting that lets you create a character who will develop over time. Sounds like a rpg to me.
Either way, I don't see it being a full MMORPG. It's more likely to be a very niche PvP game with RPG elements, and decidedly feature-light since MJ already talked about not needing a lot of developers and time to create it once funded.

But that's fine, MJ just doesn't have the money and manpower to take on a full-scale project, so I can understand the need to focus on a few things, rather than many, and should the game be successful, maybe then it can be expanded into one.

Heyooo, I think due to the depth of crafting, the housing system, and the lore it will be more MMORPG than most of the stuff we have seen in the past few..no, several years (crap its been that long)!

I'm just naturally pessimistic. If he can manage to pull everything off, then I can see this being great as well, but as of right now, neither you or I know how much depth will make it to any of the systems come launch.

I'm keeping my thoughts more realistic, and not going to hype this game up in any way. However, at this point, I'd be surprised if it even gets funded. But then, games have been funded that are less thought out, by people who have little to no experience in the industry, so maybe it'll work out fine.

I find grinding mobs to be better, but it needs to be mixed up. Like, keep XP gain limited to mobs, but give quest chains as you level that tell a story, and has some epic moments and boss fights, and reward you with items and coin.

Actually, achievement systems could take the place of regular quests. Say, an achievement to "Kill 100 Super Raptors in the Blarney Hills", and when you do so, you get the achievement and rewards.

Basically, in the end, progression needs to be mixed up a little to ward off boredom, because all of one or the other just isn't very fun, in my opinion.

But at the very least, tone down questing.
