If WoW revenue falters, Vivendi (owners of Activision-Blizzard) will continue to feel the impact.  Vivendi was trying to sell off their shares for some time, largely because WoW is their primary source of income (all the eggs in one basket).

WoW generates a ton of money, but it is too top heavy, and there are simply way too many hands in the coffers.  When it falls, it will the shock heard around the globe.

Agreed. At least for me, WOW was such a great game and to see it become what it is now makes me sad. In some ways, it reminds me of my childhood. I had a wonderful childhood growing up in Spain (was born in Barcelona). I lived in Spain for 19 years and had wonderful experiences. Now I'm an adult living and working in the US. Much like my childhood, WOW has become a part of my past, memories which I will cherish but I am not able to return to. I had a great run with WOW but my time to move on to another game as come; goodbye WOW, hello GW2!

Is it humanly possible to play two, or even three!, MMOs? My boyfriend is debating whether he'll get GW2 or stick with WoW when Pandaria comes out. I'm letting him play my account between MoP's launch so he can decide. I think he enjoys the Necro, but he's fumbling at the dodge mechanic though. He also loves his Pally, and recently grinded for his transmog stuff.

Some say that since GW2 doesn't have a sub, that means people can play their other sub-based MMOs. But is that even feasible? Anyone out there who's playing more than one MMO would help out.

I don't have the time to play both, so I'm playing GW2. I just can't justify paying a monthly sub for a game I'm hardly going to play. So I guess for me it's GW2.

Well, GW2 can't beat WoW in subs. GW2 has no subscription fee.

True enough... I guess I mean active playerbase; and I'm not referring to people actually playing the game at certain times, I mean people who have (regardless of payment model) registered accounts with the games.

LOL...I normally don't get into the my game versus yours thing...but this is just crazy lol.  When I read that, this is what I saw:

"Please buy WoW for incredibly cheap before August 28th...because once August 28th hits, we're screwed :(."

Really? What I saw was "Hey guys, we have an expansion releasing in a month. So now is the time to start your WoW adventures. To get you started, you can buy original WoW and all the previously released expansions for $20 and if you enjoy your time in WoW, make sure to buy the MoP expansion!"

So basically, trying to sell more MoP and increase their subscriptions. It has very little to do with GW2. It's all about them selling MoP and increasing subscriptions.

Then why end it before the 28th of August? If it has nothing to do with GW2, its quite the random choice for a date and may I add, quite the councidence.

I don't know. What day would you pick? To me, having a week long sale that starts on the 21st and ends on the 27th makes sense...since that when the week ends...

Hey I'd probably pick a date right before the release of a major competitor...but that's just me.  Blizzard clearly lives in a bubble and pays no attention to its competition whatsoever.  In fact, that's the secret to their success.  Absolute ignorance of everything around them.

I'm surprised GW2 fans would even be afraid of WoW and it's sale. Just because they are offering an amazing deal doesn't mean it will affect GW2 at all. Most people that intend to play GW2 have already bought it.

And you know this... how?

I don't have the facts, but I would GUESS (there...better? lol) that they would want to get into early access. You know, the one that starts before the WoW sale ends....

thank you, and yes, much better :-)

There is a battle brewing for gamers in NA and EU. Right now WOW enjoys the largest number of subscribers in NA and in EU. Question is, will GW2 come close, match, or even possibly beat WOW in NA and EU?

It is no secret that the vast majority of WOW subs are in Aisa; China mainly. As of Jaunary 22, 2008, WOW enjoyed 10 million subs (2m in EU, 2.5m in NA and 5.5m in Asia). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_of_Warcraft

With WOW subs down to 9.1 million no one really knows exactly what the numbers per market are, so for the sake of argument, we're going to assume that the percentages remain the same; out of 9.1 million subs, NA would have 2.275m, EU would have 1.82m and Asia would have 5.005m subs.

Many have heard of KDB Daewoo Securities firm predicting approx 3.12 million GW2 box sales; though some consider KDB to be very reliable, it is still just a prediction, not fact. Since GW2 will only be available in NA and EU gaming markets, though people in other continents will be playing GW2 via NA/EU servers, you can see how it would be quite possible for GW2 to near WOW numbers in NA and in EU. With a prediction of 3.12 million and the threshold being 4.5 million, GW2 would have to beat KDB's expecations by 1.38 million copies; possible? Only time will tell.

One of the reasons why this is such a big deal, especially for Blizzard, is because the vast majority of the revenue for WOW comes from NA and EU, not Asia; due to different payment models. WOW is one of the largest cash cows for Activision/Blizzard, and a significant reduction in revenue from WOW could possibly spell disaster (key "possible"). Blizzard's recent, and quite aggressive, sales, advertisement, and release date campaign I think speak to the possible uneasiness at the Irvine studios.

What do you think?

If you actually read the thread we addressed that already.

You "addressed it" with factual evidence I suppose.

I don't know you'd have to go back and actually read the thread.

I'll save you the trouble - no one in the thread ever said WoW doesn't ever put stuff on sale.  However, you've got a major patch advertised to launch the week of GW2's launch, a huge sale that ends the day GW2 launches, and an expansion 1 month after that launch.

Again no one here is saying Blizz is going under or WoW is going to die.  Their business tactics however are blatantly obvious.  GW2 is not the WoW killer and no other game will be either.

You're obviously free to have your own opinion.  However, it appears the majority of people in this thread that don't agree simply don't agree because they feel like the posters with contrary opinions to their own are suggesting WoW is dying or Blizzard will be out of business.

Agreed. I think wow-fanboys are misunderstanding what we (at least me) are saying. We're not saying that WOW is going to die or anything like that. All we're saying is that it is clearly obvious what Blizzard is doing here. It's not just that the pre-MoP patch is arriving on the same day as GW2 releases, or that MoP is arriving  almost exaclty one month after GW2 releases, it is also that Blizzard is having an all-wow products sale which ends right before GW2 releases. I'm still amazed that people deny all of this has nothing to do with GW2. Denial anyone?

haha, my thoughts exactly. Why else would Blizzard have the sale end on August 27th? Random? I think not!

Good deal, but I'm too much of a casual player now to play two games at once or pay for a subscription that I will probably barely use. Maybe if it had 3 months subscription I'd get it.

I think that is one of the major issues for many people. Many just don't have the time to play two games at the same time, much less afford to pay for a game they're not playing (if they find themselves playing GW2 mostly). After playing WOW for many years, the game just feels old, outdated, static and old fashion to me; it has lost much of its appeal. I guess you could say GW2 is the future, at least for me.

I'm reading a lot of people saying that Blizzard is either being smart or desperate; could it not be both? Could Blizzard not be smart about their delicate and desperate situation?

I think one of the biggest reasons why GW2 is such a threat to wow, as opposed to many games in the past, is due to the quality of the game and the pyament model. Many games in the past attempted to compete with wow with similar mechanics and most importantly with the same payment model. Why would you pay the same for a game that offers less? With GW2 people are asking themselves, why would I not pay less for a game that offers more? I think that is the key.

cheers!

GW2 have killed WoW for me, as in I cannot enjoy WoW after playing GW2. With that said, individual mileage may vary.

Also, in before lock.

Agreed. Can't speak for others, but as far as I am concerned, wow is dead to me

Just because any US citizen can run for President doesn't mean they should; just because anyone has what they think are great ideas for a game doesn't mean they should all be making video games.

I'm not trying to "crash the party", but I think every once in a while a dosage of reality is in order. I do have a few questions for EoC devs though...

1. Have you guys secured a publishing company for your prototype?

2. Has the publishing company demonstrated enough interest in your game?

3. Have you guys considered taking a loan in order to fund the development of the prototype? If you guys aren't willing to take a risk for your own game, why should we?

Cheers!
