Do you have proof that a large portion of players are no longer playing? Please do not use Xfire, everyone knows it is as reliable as wikipedia (in other words, it is not reliable). I'm looking for hard facts here, not personal perception, opinions, or subjective insights.

I find it funny, yet sad in a way, the mental, grammatical and argumentative gymnastics people perform in order to either praise (defend) their favorite game or trash (attack) a game they dispise. This entire thread is pointless and reeks of baiting.

The population status of each server changes depending on concurrency, not alts or dev gimmicks. I play in Sanctum of Rall. My server has changed from High to Full and back to High, and then yet again back to Full countless of times. Late at night and early in the morning it usually is High, later in the day and in the evening (US central time) it gets Full. I see the same happening to most other servers. One account, one count, regardless of how many alts you have.

After reading the link provided by the OP, I believe the OP has either greatly misread the link or has purposefully misguided others in to believing the OP's agenda-driven conclusions. I do not see anywhere in the link where it could lead anyone to believe that alts are being counted as individual accounts, seperate from the "main". Not only does it make no sense, but it is plainly not there... that is, if you read it objectively.

Though I play GW2, I am not a fanboy of GW2. I do enjoy the game, and believe it is much better than WOW in many respects (not in all areas); I have no problem in criticizing or praising the game, where criticizism and praise are due.

Makes you kind of wonder all this research early in the morning late at night during the middle of the day, for a damn game you don't even play.

Lol well I guess someone has to keep everyone entertained.

Yup

Activision Blizzard took an abrupt nosedive Wednesday morning too - what shall we conclude, that WoW is doomed? Heard this for 8 years now, still makes me laugh since the very first day.

Everyone is taking a hit from the global econimic situation; from west to east and north to south. I was just reading an article on a Spanish news website about how toy companies will be taking a hit this holiday season; people are feeling the crunch and entertainment is not high on the priority list.

To assume that somehow NCsoft's underperformance is indicative of an isolated downward spiral apart from the global economic downturn we're all experiencing I think is at the very least premature, if not completely incorrect.

I'm not a fanboi or trying to justify/defend NCsoft. I owe them no loyalty, I'm just a gamer who enjoys playing games.

I agree with The_Korrigan, you need more than just economic numbers from one quarter to argue the doom of any game.

Dismissing the false notion that Activation blizzard nosedived, truthfully you can take 1 countries numbers and make a general judgement. Lets face it Gw2 AND Blade and Souls both didn't fair as great as they would of expected. As such, the company's stocks fell greatly. How great it fell and the ammount it changed being related to the state of the economy to enhance that drop can be argued, but in the end it just shows both titles combined failed to deliver the numbers expected no matter how you like to spin it.

If you wan't to argue numbers, out of the supposed 10 million wow players, how many have purchased MoP? In both cases, Blizzard and NCsoft, I believe it's too soon to assume any level of failure. Funny thing, is, you're the one spinning numbers, all I'm asking is that people not jump to conclusions based on spin. If NCsoft continues to underperform through the coming fiscal year, then that's another matter. That is why it takes 3 or more consecutive quarters to confirm a recession, not one.

Nope, we don't here. Politics have invaded every aspect of our lives for the past couple months, it would be nice to have a couple "safe havens", such as this forum.

Somewhere along the line people need to realize that traditionally MMORPGs were not about fun 1st. They were about goal achievement 1st. It was through this goal achievement that you would enhance the times in the game that you had fun.

But in GW2, the goals do not serve to enhance the fun,The "fun" is supposed to be in achieving the goals. While it may do that to a greater extent than all game before, it still becomes repetitious after a while and that is where the fun fades. MMOs require more than just "fun" to be a long term success.

And to address one of the other points in the thread, GW2 is not mssing the "What to do", it's missing the "why to do it". Which, I guess, ties into my point above.

Off-topic:

Geezer - I appreciate your comments and tend to find them very straightforward, so thanks for them!  (Except the TOR bashing where you are blatantly WRONG!!!) :p

On-topic:

This game is not a typical MMO.  It's a great game, but it's not a great MMORPG.  In fact, it severely lacks in the latter as there is very little to progress to.  I really don't consider this game much of an MMORPG, more of an MMOAPG similar yet different than GW1 was.

MMORPGs and RPGs have always been about the character progression.  When you can unlock the most important parts within the first ten levels, those looking for the RPG part will become quickly bored.

Again, good game, poor MMORPG...IMO (don't want to forget that!!)

Level 80 here, still unlocking many, many things and have more to do. If you are referring to WoW and games like that stringing your skills out there is a reason for that, it's money.

If you dont like the way it works in GW2, simply increment your traits and skill points out like in WoW for example. Unlock a skill every other level and don't put traits in as often. Try to only play with one weapon type for 10 levels, get another weapon and play with it for 10. You can make your own rules! :)

I personally only played with a few different skills in WoW anyway, and having 30 buttons to click on my bars was pointless. Same goes for other games like Rift.

All in all it's how you play any game. The game isn't perfect, but it's hard to ridicule something that gives this much entertainement for $60

edit: sp

wait, so you can run lvl 80 dungeons at lvl 10? you can equip exotic gear at lvl 10? you have all your skills available at lvl 10? (especially the elite skills)

You quoting me?

no man, Grimal

It's an obvious pattern that makes me come to the conculsion that, blizzard are paying monkeys to troll other mmo's.

not sure about the conclusions you came up with but I certainly do love your name! haha

what? you believe they hire pandas and not monkeys?

you got it! :-p

That's the measuring stick we should be using, not GW2 and/or SWTOR. If MoP outsells Cata I will be very surprised.

Both of you know what we was referring too don't try and act like you didn't. What he said is true. Maybe you are not playing the game?

I read his post very careful and am fully aware what he was referring to; still doesn't make it true. I believe both him and you are wrong. I have been playing the game and he's wrong... sorry man

There is no point to the game. Anet just gave us what everyone else has given us just delivered in a different way. Once you hit 80 it is just a grind for things that don't matter in the least. WvW is to exploitable and SPvP has not ranking system.

Anti-farming is to get more people to buy gems for gold!

the game is not even a month old and already dismissing it. The SPVP ranking system hasn't been implemented yet and WVW is still in its infancy, haven't started the 2 week rotations yet.

The point of GW2 is to have fun, if you're not having fun, then go play another game; if you're having fun, then I hope to see you in WVW :-p

You nailed it. You can not deliver a game that is missing its core end game content and than give us a leveling system that puts us at max in two weeks casual play. That is why all these games are failing they don't give us enough time to level while they prepare end game content.

sorry man, but lvl 80 in 2 weeks is not casual play. It may be casual for hardcore players, but not those who have jobs, families and a life.

If you have reached lvl 80 with 100% map completion, 100% storyline completion, 100% crafting completion and 100% dungeon completion (both story and explorable modes for all 8 dungeons) before Anet can iron out all the details surrounding GW2's "so called" end-game, then yes, I will agree with you.

Just because you've reached lvl 80 does not mean you've completed anything... if anything, you've just started :-)

Sorry, these discussions are beyond me.

I agree with you!

My x-wife asked the same question of all the mmorpgs she watched me play. She lacked imagination I suppose.

Anyway, I looked at your OP history. Every single one of his posts are negative, not just GW2. The only positive one I saw was concerning DAoC. I will agree with him on that one, but he holds no respect in my eyes if everything has no point.

Agreed. I find it kind of funny  the "revelations" and "realizations" people have only to later see that they've always held that view from the beginning. The point of a game is to have fun. If you're not having fun then move on to another game or find some other hobby, if you're still having fun, then by all means continue playing.

I'm not one of those who preaches at everyone else telling them they're playing the game wrong, but I suspect that most people who run into this problem tend to "rush" to lvl 80, much like WOW has trained us for the past 7+ years. My wife and I already have 2 toons each at lvl 80 and we still find much to do. I'm still working on crafting and personal story, she's working on more alts. I find it hard to believe people run out of things to do in GW2; hell I'm only at 34% map exploration with my main!

I just hit like 62% of map completion. The amount of things to do at level 80 are overwhelming.

Like you I don't want to be telling others they are playing the game wrong, but you are right! Once you hit the level cap is far from the end of the game. I see no end because of the content available now, and the expansions that will come out later.

Dumb WoW and it's burning the levels into our brains as being the end! lol I can say that because tomorrow I will be playing MoP and I have learned to play two different games, and can seperate their differences. :)

Both my wife and I quit wow. I quit when Cata came, my wife quit when the MoP patch came; they changed so much that she said "f*ck it! I'm done!" haha. Gets old relearning your character with every expansion. WOW was a great game but at least for my wife and I, its the past now... GW2 is the future for us (we'll see about Titan).

I wish devs (in this game and others) would realize that not everyone uses twitter. I am not signing up for that nonsense just so I can get game updates.

I agree to a certain point. Anet will use whatever social media they choose and I guess if you want to be "following" them then you'll have to use what they use. I also dont' use twitter and have no intention of starting.

It is frustruating when you can't log in to play the game you paid for, but sh*t hapens. I have no major complains with the game, save a few bugs and some small things wich irk me once in a while, but other than that... I'm very happy with GW2. I guess I'll just have to be patient and wait till I can get back on. At least we're not paying a monthly sub :-)

i played on sanctum of rall also but there is WAY to many trolls moved to that server after the story . During beta 3 and stress tests the fighting in world vs world was just ridiculous. We had to do a server change to isle of janthir because SOR just seemed way to immature.

hmmm... what kind of things were they trolling about and what things did they do that made them appear immature. Not questioning you, just curious. Only played in these last two stress tests, so I have no idea what its been like there.
