The Secret World for $9.99 Microsoft Store. Save $40
General Discussion « The Secret World 11/25/12 4:50:55 AM
Not sure how long this offer is going to last, but I think this is a really really good deal. Even for people who hate subs, getting to play this game for 30 days for only $9.99 is a steal. The content is awesome.
I got lifetime for TSW but for those on the fence, I think it won't get any better than this. |

Could a game with SWG's Mechanics, but not the SW IP be successful?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 11/23/12 10:45:26 PM
Well. t really depends on the mechanics to be used in said game : game using pre-cu mechanics would have a better chance at success in my opinion, while it would be extremely hard for a game with post-cu mechanics to succeed, especially without the SW IP.
In any case, I'd be all over a game like that, if only for the superb crafting system. Have heard people saying The Repopulation is using a lot of elements from the original SWG, so I can only hope the final product is similar.
Still sad SWG is gone. It was my primary reason to keep my SOE Station Access. |

[General Article] PlanetSide 2: Review in Progress - Part 1
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 11/21/12 4:00:42 AM
Well, I'm not a big fan of fps games, but I had a blast playing PS2 today. Didn't have any problems downloading the game, and I never experienced lag or disconnectrions. Was quite surprised about this because all the NA servers were high or full. Can't say I would make this game my main MMO, but I believe SOE did a great job with this game, and I will be PvPing a lot on this game in the next few months for sure.
My PvE is already covered with other titles so this is a great addition to my stable of MMOs. No need to purchase a game box so go download and decide if it's good enough for you. |

Unlocking more Char Slots is coming, but TBD

Again, it's only my opinion, but this is really no big deal. |

Originally posted by TangentPoint Yes, I suppose my definition of "cheapskates" and "freeloaders" include people like you. I purchased WoW with every expansion until Cataclysm, was subbed for 6 years, and since I cancelled I have no access to any of the content I purchased. except for the trial thing they offer now up to level 20. Shouldn't they be showing some gratitude after all I paid throughout the years ? If/when I ever decide to go back to WoW, I am ready to go back with my wallet ready to pay for that kind of entertainment again, not waiting on 7 / 14 day trials like many people do.
Same with SWTOR, I do not expect a game to be free, because games mean business, they are not charities. They're already being generous in making a big chunk of the game totally free, hoping that people will at least spend some money when in game. After all, some money is better than no money at all. But I assume you had cancelled your account a while ago, with ZERO access to most of the content (you might have been playing a free to 15 account), and now you expect to go back and get eveything for free because you were once a "subscriber" and they should show some gratitude to people like you.
Maybe in your dream world, things work that way, but in my world, I understand just how hard it is to survive and remain profitable when you own a business, and to me, what SWTOR is offering is fair, especially for the legions of freeloaders who are not going to spend a dime to begin with. Probably now you're wishing you had waited to play the game totally for free that way, and I think you should have waited, considering your reaction.

Well, in my opinion, these forums are full of cheapskates and freeloaders, so it's not surprising to see the outrage caused by companies who expect people to pay for entertainment.
After all, in the age of pirating movies, books, games, software, music, satellite TV, etc. you must be crazy if you expect to make a profit by providing entertainment. It's all free or nothing right ? |

[Column] The Secret World: The Price of Progress
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 11/01/12 10:47:02 AM
I've never had any problems paying for my entertainment. F2P, B2P, P2P or any other business model really don't mean anything if the games are not appealing to me.
Been playing TSW since headstart, got lifetime, and have already spent over $100 at the cash shop, and I have no problem with that as long as the game provides the kind of entertainment that I'm looking forward to.
There are tons of cheaper games out there for sure, but in my opinion, time is the most valuable asset that we have, and at least in my case, I am going to spend my time ( and money) playing something I really enjoy.
I am not opposed to Funcom lowering their prices or anything, though. I just don't have any problems with the current business/pricing model. |

I don't know if they make the best MMOs , but I surely enjoy them. I waited a long time for a modern day MMO with an awesome setting and atmosphere, and TSW delivers exactly what I was looking for, along with a superb story, really cool dungeons, and a complex skill system that allows for lots of interesting combinations, among other things.
Not perfect, but there's no perfect game out there. What's in there was more than enough to get a lifetime membership.
Now AoC. I still have a sub and think it's worth every cent. Game still has a bunch of issues, and to many people out there, they're gamebreaking issues. Not to me, and I really appreciate what FC did to create this low fantasy virtual world.
And Anarchy Online. It's hard to believe the game is so old, because I still find the gameplay and the game systems way above the average MMO, and really hope at some point, they manage to make the graphical update a reality. Pretty sure this would inject new life into the game.
Don't play AO that much anymore, but keep my yearly plan going to show my appreciation and support for Funcom, a gaming company that brings many cool and interesting ideas to the MMO genre, and yes, the execution of these ideas may not always be the best, and some people may claim their execution leave a lot to be desired, and/or their games just plain suck, but I am honestly not bothered by these comments.
I do enjoy playing Funcom games, and in the end, that's all it matters to me. |

Updated Restrictions, from a F2P perspective, what a mess.
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 10/24/12 10:33:14 PM
They are going to offer the full leveling experience 1-50 with access to all the story completely for free, and that is very generous in my opinion. I honestly see this thread filling up with all the cheapskates and freeloaders complaining that they can't have everything for free and hating on EA for being so evil and greedy.

I've never been a big fan of housing in MMOs ( too lazy to invest time in having a really cool looking virtual house ) but Trion seems to have done a stellar job when it comes to implementing their version of housing in Rift.
Definitely, another feature to look forward to when Storm Legion goes live. Always nice to have this kind of stuff in MMOs. |

Originally posted by tman5 Just so you know, the trial begins first time you log in, not when you register on the website and begin installation/setup.
Also, I'm pretty sure you still have the option to complete 30 missions and have another 2 days added to the trial for a total of 5 days.
I think that's plenty of time to know if you like the game or not, especially after completing 30 missions for the extra 2 days. If after completing 30 missions you are not hooked with the game, then I think it's safe to assume you should just move on and find a game that suits your gaming tastes. |

Originally posted by Zylaxx LOL at GW2 having meaningful endgame. LMAO you're kidding right ?
The only reason imo why GW2 is enjoying success currently ( who knows what will happen in a few months ) is because its business model (revamped F2P that forces players to spend at least $60 upfront) is very attractive to the huge train of cheapskates and freeloaders. Other than that, GW2 is an extremely shallow and mediocre game that really has no lasting appeal.

[Column] The Secret World: Doing Right By Gamers
News & Features Discussion « General Discussion 10/05/12 4:15:44 AM
I think TSW is a very very good game, and the reason I got lifetime for it. I am also still subbed to AoC which is still pretty amazing after all these years (looking forward to the new Dragon Spine updates), and I am considering going back to AO and take advantage of the yearly offer.
Funcom's games are not perfect, but then again, who can point out to a perfect game here ? I really appreciate their commitment to their games, and their desire to try to do things at least a little bit different. And no, I'm not a fanboy, I realize they could improve many things, but I also realize they offer just the right stuff for my gaming tastes, and I will continue to support them for that.

My [partial] theory why The Secret World and SWTOR failed

I think TSW is an amazing game and have no problems at all with the subscription+cash shop. I have lifetime membership for TSW and I am currently subbed to other games as well, and honestly, I think the community in TSW is also the best I have ever seen.
Someone started a thread on the official TSW forums a while ago trying to find out the average age of gamers in TSW and it turned out to be 37 with lots of people responding to the thread well over 40.
That, in my opinion, means the game is enjoyed by an older audience, even if it was not meant to be that way, which also means the game may grow steadily over time, but at a somewhat slow rate.
Personally, I have no problem with this, as the current playerbase seems to be stable and very dedicated, albeit small. Funcom claims the game is profitable right now, and as long as they are committed to adding more content to the game, I think the game will do just fine with its P2P business model, and will continue to attract new players all the time.
To end my post, I will say that even though I wish Funcom gets more people to play the game and increase their profits, I certainly really enjoy the game a lot as is right now, with a small population, and I certainly don't miss the b2p and f2p crowds, especially those in the 15-30 age bracket lol.

But that is very different from irrational hate ("you reap what you sow Failcom") , and trying to reinforce that notion by putting words in the mouths of others ( "my entire guild and many others I know"). |
