All this talk about locust eating up content and leaving...  mmo was never about amazing story content. First story driven mmo was SW:TOR and it was released in December 2011 only a year ago. Yet there were hundreds of games released earlier with that concept in mind but they never asked you to pay continously for privilege of playing through story content. You buy your RPG game play throu it once or more the content never lasts for more than 100 hours but it's ok you paid for it. Publisher and developer get their money and everyone is happy (of course when game is crap you are not).

If you are gonna make game and scream loudly that it's RPG experience people who are not interested in long term mmo will also show up to play through the game as much as they want like they did with for ex. Skyrim and leave. Bethesda doesn't stand above their fans asking for money each month expecting them to pay because they made fully voiced RPG nor they have big ass servers to pay for.

I honestly don't think you can freely mix genres and expect every RPG or Star Wars fan to absolutely love MMO and play they game for year or two straight, can you ?

On the other hand the MMO crowd are usually people playing some other MMO game at the same time they probably already put few months or years into that game. They are going to compare and they have to go absolutely crazy about this new title to drop all of that time and/or money investment and fully switch to another game.

You can't be playing 2 MMO game's at the same time unless it's all you are planning to do and if you also have to pay 15$ for each a month it's only a matter of time when you switch to playing only one especially when some new good game comes up and you want it and have to dish out chunk of money for it.


You can't beat WoW with cheaper clone of itself. 12 years ago it was diablo 2 and many clones followed for none to repeat that success it had to be next generation since thing like torchlight apeared and got some recognition.
I don't think the game with copycat game play and skill mechanics would beat the wow unless without being ground breaking better. If it plays like WoW and is much better than why am I not playing WoW the blizzard subscriber would ask and probably goes back to game with which he has spent much more time.

Last thing would be the mysterious mechanics that hook you up to playing mmo for months and no one in my opinion done this better than WoW. Story content lasts only as much as it's needed to play through it but decent MMO mechanics with periodic updates keep people involved in pvp / pve constantly.

start of TL:DR; lots of words about wow don't ask me why kinda on topic.

You may say that WoW is not a grind mmo and you think that because of AAA masking of the grind mechanics that we always want. People like to work for the success getting top ranking gear in arenas can take months. It took me 2 weeks of 5 hour daily sessions on battle grounds to get first full pvp armor set. Same goes for pve you can rarely skip a tier on pve gear because you are gonna either die or no one will invite you to the group doing X dungeon when you don't meet gear requirements. In WoW at the time of getting max level you won't probably fit into requirements for 95% of PvE content and you have to go through it step by step. When you feel like you are done there's at least one or two classes you wanna try out.

My theory about WoW popularity are the big changes with content updates. Blizzard not only rises level cap and throws some new gear to chase after but they change good quarter of the previous class mechanics. Blizzard got somewhat lucky that they seemed to hit sweet spot of rpg world which contains almost all fantasy settings that you can imagine. We have death knights using blood rituals along with kung fu fighting pandas, steam punk dwarves and pirate goblins. IMHO it sounds ridiculous on the paper but it's blended and mixed so finely togheder that you can hardly spot anything wrong in this world of warcraft.

Right now I'm not playing WoW but it's hard to deny that It has huge quantities of qualities that are now impossible to match by any new title. Millions of players paying over the years made this game just a monster impossible to compete with without dishing out something close to billion dollars (isn't that the number that wow cash in every year)? And then you have to pray people will like it more...

Therefore I don't think it's possible to make such a game to be match for monster. It started small but it was AAA in every aspect and that's probably the way to go for the future. Game developers would have to remember that world is not going to breed X million of MMO players out of the thin air just because they made a game. Asking for 10 milion wow playerbase is a joke they have game you can't touch and extreme crowd on the scene doesn't help either.

 

P.S. I think I need my own column ;-)

This game is ready to launch ? into the outerspace probably.

 

I wish realy good luck to this game and it's players if they are having fun I hope the servers won't shut down ever just don't ask me to play with you ;-)

This game is great and B2P it's probably what I was waiting for. It's how it should have been since the start.F2P can sometimes ruin your experiance like SW:TOR did to me.

To me it's 10/10 in visiuals since it's release. Just play and look at imense quality and amount of detail this simple 2d technology allowed. Thanks to this every location in game is unique. Can you say thatabout any 3d game that followed in next years ?

Even today Baldur's Gate series stand out with it's quality art style which has aged well can you say that about for example Neverwinter Nights or Morrowind with their blurry textures and ugly models with cluncky animations?

I say don't bother with neverwinter and firefall around the release corner It's not worth the time to struggle with 2002 mmo mechanics in 2012. I'd rather play something fresh than this rotting meat... altho I enjoy hating this game because before knowing what it realy is I was very exited about it ;(

you are over 9000% right symilar issues with RaiderZ where you even get korean swear words filtered out on eu ver. of game... can't write know without ***w and badly translated often inaccuare skill or quest descritions...  these little things make you feel like developers don't realy care they just want another product pushed.

Game is now ejoyed only by a few people I think they are more of a masohists than hardcore.

First of all game has outdated desing and engine. Gameplay is horrible and broken with constant interuption of long 5-10 unskippable dialog sequences. This application delivers some unique features but forgets to include worthwile game along with them.

In this "thing" permadeath doesn't mean what it should you don't loose everything. It means that you will still retain all of your quest progress with many powerful bonuses you just start at level one and need to get some gear by grindfest.

Hardcore means that you will die to random shit ussualy on one or 2 hits which includes enemy players.

Open world PvP with full looting means you are gonna constantly find yourself sorrounded by overwhelming number of teamed up griefers  aka PK guilds who spend most of their time running low level dungeons killing weak and alone players for their loot. Stun ensnare and fly away wow style ? not a chance... you see a pk group you are gonna die and loose all stuff on you so much fun :3 Now you think maybe I can escape one or two PK'ers ... forget about it one hit and you are out of your boots. 

This game may work for few people but for all the rest it's just horrible dissaster and mmorpg.com is slowly loosing respect by promoting it. I hope we won't see  it out of closed beta because many people remember Wizardry name as good old thing and that is way better than new crap thing.

I don't like sugar coating and paid-to-be-good reviews this guy should be fired and this mmo won't ever see scores higher than 5/10. This is just example how to not make games and I honestly don't believe it's new made project it was probably laying somewhere half done for last 10 years because funding has ended.

 

Beside the big words and how awesome they sound this game is a horrible experience it might pass as free to play at times of lineage 2 glory but today... You just start off you see bad z-grade generic dialogue followed by blocky characters with stiff animations it was odyssey back in time to 2001 it wouldn't be a good game back there either.

You can't skip the cutscene so you have to bare reading this dialogue and it's bad and long all of this reminds you of NES JRPG it's like big flashback but nowhere near goodness of ff7, chrono trigger or golden sun. Yes yes you are awesome mega adventurer how original... you are going to save the world and shit. But there's a twist ! you cant use steps in middle of town until u level up that's the kind of idioticy that developers sneak in into this game.

Let's talk graphics since gameplay is nothing to talk about... there just forgot to include one.

First thing that strikes you is amazing green world around you and everything shines so hard that you can barely see unfortunately that's not temporary effect you were probably left to grow up in a cave and now you are seeing sunlight for the first time ever. Everything is greeny-brown and that's the color palete they use for the whole town. In the dungeons there is gray-brown for a change. Amounts of bloom... yes I've said bloom not like we have hdr and perfect looking shaders in games for couple years now.This is some kind of eye cataract simulator. This amounts of bloom are there for obvious reasons to hide bad model work and poor quality textures. Textures would require it's own paragraph but lets leave it at one comparison Gothic I.

To my surprise there is decent amout of polies to create the outside world but that just brings another issue... performance. So I've said the game looks bad uses bloom and low res texures with low poly models so it should run on top notch android or apple phone yes ? NO I have budget gaming PC but it's new runs yours typical BF 3 on ultra details 25+ fps and Skyrim 60+ guess what happens here drops to 20... keeps at 30-40 does even look close to WoW or L2 ?

I  had so much hopes for this game but when I saw first screenshots I was worried and now I am just sad that Wizardry name is pinned to this title. It will not fail no one will ever know about it beside few people.

As F2P player instead of enjoying stuff I can do in this Star Wars universe on every step I'm learning what I can't do. It's a bad way of attracting customer.

This game doesn't feel like it's free 2 play... in the first few days you come by restrictions that either you pay to remove or will put you off from the game. So I don't feel wellcome as F2P player everything I do screems PAY US ALREADY!  I think free trial up to level 20-30 would be much better for this game than such restricted F2P.

 

I have so much hope for Neverwinter... it will hurt twice as much if it fails.

You have to underestand that it's not only genetics which come into play here but social background as well. The half-elf is a race on it's own. Charisma isn't only good looks it comes from what the half-elf life is like. They love to travel and be around diverse groups of people they are natural leaders since they grow up not as outcasts but they are allways minotrity that has to fend for themselves.

Yeah they also fit the game design better in 4th edition erlier they had more of a roleplay value than anything else.

P.S. playing table top you can allways sway your natural bonuses with different background story if you make such effort no dungeon master will stop you from beeing half-elf with +2 to anything :P

I'm happy that this game still holds up over so many years. It was boring grind only asian mmo but I was very good in it's times.

@Ozmodan I'm sure the veterans are happy for new update you don't see that often for such old games.

He's a good support you don't need to invest in magic to make him good -_- I don't get you ppl. Same goes with Ymir they are TANKY / DISABLERS / INITIATOR not damage dealers.

 

Great way to make them op is to scale their skill damage with normal atacks...

You don't hear this "art style" moan in borderlands reviews. Where cartoony is an excuse for lack of detail game looks like done in 2005. When the game is good an art style is the last thing that bothers you when you play it ^_^ and I don't like T2 visiuals and it goes back to Fate but that never stopped me to enjoy it a lot.

It's a meh game to me. Behind first borderlands I think there was 2 scenarios. It was developed as mmo but canceled or devs just used damn boring repetitive quest to fillout the game because story was short.

It's a hack'n'shoot fps one of a kind :O but it's not rly any good fps. All guns shoot this same you can distinct shotguns bacause they spray short range and explosives. Everything else is subject to the same random recoil system.

Using ADS is mandatory and weapon models are massive so horribly massive I'm asking why ? Why would sniper rifle with scope had to cover 80% of right half of my screeen even pistols are huge. In fps that respects gamers you can find config value to use 1/2 sized weapon models or none at all.

AI is typical. Artificial unInteligance enemies that either go at you or just shoot sparsly  using cover that never covers them enough exposing usually to headshots ( lol ).

Classes are the same as in previous game they just tossed them into blender and added bit of spice. So now you have sniper who can go puff and melee, handsome guy got turrent and so on. I must say this skill trees don't inspire me to level up. I get my ulti at 5 and I'm set bonuses from next couple passives are just boring and insignificant. More accuracy more damage with each skill point you don't rly feel any difference same as in the begining you just headshot everything and it dies.

Now more annoying stuff armored or what ever enmies :S You can't scratch thhem with huge sniper rifle round to the head but just take your scoped pistol BAM! dead. I'm like WTF ?

Trailers lie to you about having a melee system for Zero there is none you can just slap enemy in the face with press of a button and that's about it. Same stuff as in any other fps. You'd probably finish game before zero's melee would be at match with just shooting in the head. Not worth the hassle and nothing designed to be fun. Just by using 2 mouse buttons for light / heavy attacks and four 3hit combos out of it would mean world to me and it would probably take 3 days for dev team to make it polish and debug.

I'm dissapointed and bored by this game it doesn't score high in my book but it has it's positives.

 

People get a grip Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 both  are great hack'n'slashes.

D3 design is for addictive competetive play unfortunately it's also pay to win and failed a bit at addictive part. It's not a secret that big part of d3 is it's poor loot system that makes you grind forever and never find better stuff than on rmah.

Torchlight 2 is build on different principle it's to deliver just fun of hacking thru monsters and beating the bosses which can be rly hard with a group on elitte. Yet it's not about braging whos got better what just for the fun of doing stuff.

Both games are desing like coop experiance it's allways better with friends than with strangers and thoes who are looking for massive hubs where they can show of new polished armour picked wrong genre to start with.

So... in diablo 3 you won't have hackers in your public games but at hefty price. No user generated content, no new classes or skilss, no offline and lan games. If i'm playing it's solo or with people I know. Booting cheater out of the game isn't a problem and I haven't seen one yet.

For one major factor in torchlight 2 game that beats blizzards creation is working and rewarding loot / quest system.

As for skill trees in both games it depends on difficulty both in d3 and torchlight on first two levels you can be suicidal rambo with random skill selection and win. But on max difficulty level for your class there will be 1 or 2 builds that allow you to prevail and win.

Talking about competitive maniacs torchlight isn't for you d3 is p2w so go to WoW where you can fill this hole in your life with some eRespect where some 14 yo kid will envy your max tier armor set or arena ranking.

Overall Torchlight 2 may be rough around the edges if you compare the first playthrou Diablo 3 obviously wins but difficulty of d3 is questionable where in T2 you can pick it from the start. You can't aviod the fact that D3 was developed 2-3 years longer with double sized development team and unimaginable budget. You also can't avoid the fact that Torchlight 2 delivers everywhere where giant blizzard refused or failed to.

I think for everyone who stoped playing D3 and/or was a bit dissapointed by it Torchlight 2 is the must have and a fun one.
