New Content:  They have to have new content if they're going to compete.  It's not a matter of if or how many dollars are allocated to it, it's a matter of when/how soon and how well it'll be designed and implemented.

Hopefully you play the game to enjoy it.  You'd pay the same price with or without the ads.  The OPTION is there for you.  It's really that simple.  If you don't think it's fair, then don't allow it.  There.  Was that really all that difficult?  Nope.  Game on!

They want to add "optional advertising", well then they need to make an optional payment plan to go with the adds.

Sure I'll turn on some ads and be spammed with Power Drink and McDonlads ads, but it's taking a slightly corrupt concept, like paying to play every month, and adding some extra smarmy super sauce to it.

There are some great articles on Gamespot and Gamespy with some industry insight as to how some professionals feel about the fact that with the increase of in-game advertizing, the prices of the games haven't gone down.

CoH is showing it's age and I'm willing to bet that they aren't going to add anything major to the game. This is a ploy to get some add revenue to fund the company. Mark my words, there won't be any major additions to the game. Sure they'll port over power sets that work for different ATs and maybe throw in one or two sets that have been getting developed for awhile, now, but don't be foolish... it's not gonna suddenly breath new life into an old game.

But as long as we have blind little fanbois out there that are more than willing to bend over and take one in the rear, companies will continue to do these kinds of things.

And as long as we have sunshines like you, the world will still be filled with things to make us chuckle.

To those looking to dictate how the added money is spent?  They've already told you what it's intended for.  Also, they're considerate enough to allow it as an option for those who don't care for it.  That says much about NCSoft and I applaud them for it.

I've said this was a good idea since I started playing in May/June 2004.  I'll be happy to allow for it.

The additional options are nice, but I'm not as excited about this as I thought I'd be.  ::shrug::  Glad they're putting forth the effort though.

To my knowledge, this is Matt Miller's first go as a designer.  Give him a chance.  So far, all the Issue releases up to Issue 12 were under Cryptic's wing.  If you don't care for the "Quality of Life" improvements (real numbers for combat, xp & level smoothing, redesign of some of the existing areas - basically doing their best to improve the player's experience) he and the team have already implemented (ones that many have approved of, might I add), keep in mind their projects without the watchful eye of Cryptic will not come to fruition until Issue 13.

Also, you might want to keep in mind that Champions Online and CoH/V will likely play very differently.  Some might find themselves preferring the gameplay of one over another. 

Personally, I'm happy for both.  As stated earlier, I'm very happy with the direction NCSoft North (Miller & Co.) are taking and I'm eager to see how Champions Online turns out.  While I respect Emmert's work, that doesn't mean that I'm going to gush over it without a thought.  So far, they've started out just like they did with CoH.  They've put out a whole bunch of ideas that sound awesome.  Hopefully they'll see the light of day this time around.

I hope nothing but the best for both Cryptic and NCSoft North.  :)

I believe you do, but it comes with a "free" month.  Most places have it from $10-$20.  Though you may be encouraged to purchase it from the NCSoft Store, you don't have to.  Hope that helps!  :)

What a fantastic offer for people who haven't played the game!  As of May, I'll have been  playing this (and many other MMOs) for the past 4 years.  4 years and the team that's running the show now couldn't be better.  Many are ex-Cryptic employees who's creative ideas were held back while Jack Emmert focused on Marvel Universe Online (now Champions Online).

Since breaking away from Cryptic, Matt Miller (Positron) and company have done an outstanding job breathing new life into City of Heroes/Villains.  If you haven't taken a look at City of Heroes, you definitely deserve to give it a shot.  It still has one of the best MMO combat systems around.

After reading this, Cryptic NCSoft North (America?  California? - Thanks Sanctus_Mors) has the best team for the game behind the helm.  I'm really impressed with the decisions they have made and what is on-tap for the future of CoH/V.

I wasn't very impressed when I saw the Beta.  I definitely am now.

Actually, I was able to pick a standard edition up off of ebay (unopened) for $16 shipped.  Tonight at my local Target, I found one for $12.49, so I picked it up and was playing.  I'm definitely enjoying myself.  :)

YMMV, but it's a steal for that price.
