I think the main problem is the disconnect between how they portray the game vs the actual gameplay. Of course they want to show an exciting play experience but that's not the gameplay new users will find themselves in. Some realistic videos showing what the gameplay really is all about and how it is fun and unique would help. Splice some interviews during the giant battle scenes with players giving short descriptions of what their particular role is and what they are actually doing. One of the interviews should be a relatively new player stating how they are contributing even though they arent uber long time players. Watching the intro videos and then entering space for the first time can conjures a big WTF. I played for 3 months 2 years ago so maybe they already did this. Also, it wouldn't hurt if your first mission was thinning the local space boar population and collecting some tusks in the process. ;)

It doesnt sound like the OP has ever played another MMO before. He claims to have gone in with no expectations then is completely outraged when it doesnt change up the questing system of almost every mmo that has come before. What, quest givers standing in place and not going about their day like in Skyrim? This game sucks! The trees and grass move simutaneously and leaves and branches are not individually rendered? Most mmo's that people have played for years and continue to enjoy do not feature this and for most it wouldnt be a rage quit beta deal breaker, but this game sucks! The tutorial is too easy and has no challenge whatsoever, hell, they might as well be walking me through it, this game sucks! I've only played to level 8 so far and I am hoping that the dificulty gets jacked up quite a bit for release. The combat has been easy and once again, hopefully it gets tweaked to offer more of a challenge and strategy. What i'm not going to do is go off on the game, blasting it in beta, because I went in with the expectations that it was going to be the next great modern MMO. Your attempt to have no expectations is an illusion even to yourself. |

I'm usually a stickler for traditional mmo mouse and camera controls but after playing for only a few hours I've surprised myself and I really like it. If you boot it up without thinking "this is an mmo I'm about to play" then the control scheme is perfectly fine and is nothing new as far as action rpgs. So far I'm liking the mmo/3rd persion action rpg fusion. Hopefully they provide full 360 controller support, the controls and UI are perfect for it and lately my wrists could use the break.

I wanted to give the game a shot, and although the rough graphics can be challenging, what is really killing it for me is that I cant get the mouse controls to behave like most games. Specifically I'd like to mouse look with the right mouse button (RMB), then be able to hold both RMB and LMB to run forward and steer my character. Seems like such a simple task but I couldnt get the controls to behave that way despite the various options. Thoughts?

Would you play LOTR: Online if it was setup differently with a subscription?

Why would the devs "ruin" the experience like this!

No line here either and my PC specs are lower then yours. Why would some have it and others not?

Before I try a new MMO I usually check these and other forums for posts like this to get an idea if it will be worth the download so thanks for giving your impressions. I just wanted to comment that there are different types of cash shops with varying levels of P2W if there is any at all. When you list cash shop it's helpful to state if its P2W and give an example of the items that make it that way. There are a number of high profile games with cash shops that dont give the players with the big bucks any major advantage over those without (Aion, AoC, TSW). Then there are those that are total P2W and I'm glad that I checked the forums before playing them. Actually read a few horror stories today about the Allods Online P2W cash shop that made me forget that game real quick.

Hopefully this can save much time and heartache for those planning on jumping ship from there current MMO. Turn back NOW! But seriously, EVE is a pretty niche MMO that would never grab the kind of player numbers that a game like WoW would generate no matter how more user friendly/easier they made it. The game has a dedicated fan base that has enabled CCP to develop it for almost ten years all while making a profit. I only played the game for a few months but I hope they never listen to you and alienate that base in exchange for appealing to the masses. |

After GW2 do you want the holy trio back?

I find an all-hybrid system reduces the pride/feeling of accomplishment that I get from being really good at a particular role. I like defining myself and striving to be the best at that particular nitch, but while I do prefer having individual roles in a group setting, the classes themselves should be able to fill multiple roles based on gear, spec, etc. If a player's class can be specced for dps or healing then the developer needs to make sure that both/all roles are totally viable for that class and its up to the player to choose which he wants to pursue at any given time. This way the roles are there for you to swap between, but you need to put in the effort to gear for and learn how to play that role. Maybe "skill trees" could also be versatile enough to allow a hybrid spec for soloing. In short, having defined group roles is good but each class needs the flexability to define itself as one of those roles depending on the players choice. Some classes may have two options while others may have three or more if you include hybrid specs. What will eventually win the day is neither of the two poll options. It will be something wonderful and grand that you never imagined until Toyota entered the MMO business. P.S. I'm from the future. |

Originally posted by Shadanwolf It will release alongside the Anarchy Online engine upgrade, 2018. That upgrade has been talked about for what, 6 or 7 years now? I would really love to play AO again, but while I don't consider myself a graphics whore the current engine is just unbearable for me. For such an old game with tons of content, an engine overhaul with b2p rerelease could make it new all over again with a brand new fan base. AoC doesnt need nearly as much work to make it comparable to most any new or upcoming game, its almost there already. |

It's a good start and has a genuinely sincere feel to it but the only thing that matters is what actions will follow these humble words.

Originally posted by Roxtarr That sums it up pretty well I think. It is interesting how the two factions have formed. Snail should never have given anything extra to the elites then what was originally included in their deal. I'm guessing they wanted to apologize for the mount snafu and didnt realize it would piss off the deluxers. They seem to be making knee jerk decisions and muddling the whole situation up in the process. They should add to the deluxe package whatever extra they just added to the elite package and leave it at that, everyone gets what they paid for plus a little bonus. Any other problems between the elites and deluxers should be settled in pvp. :) |

It sounds like Age of Conan will be right up your alley. It's mature, gritty and while there are caster classes, the world has a much more realistic visceral feel to it. The graphics are great, the combat is more in-depth and challenging then most and they just lifted the class restrictions on their f2p model, which actually lets you play quite a lot without spending a dime. It's free so you have nothing to lose. Just noticed that as I type this there is an AoC ad on the sidebar so it must be fate... |

You should try Lord of the Rings Online. It has a good f2p model that lets you experience quite a lot without having to pay a dime. The pve questing follows the books, and you play a role throughout their events, and of course the lore is plentiful.

Are MMO's not a real product deservering of your money? Even ten years ago games were only about $10 cheaper then they are now, have you ever purchased a video game? I've been playing video games for decades and I do spend money on great games that will give me 20-25 hours of solid entertainment and within a month I will have finished them and moved on to another game. I don't feel that I to have to be able to play it for months at the inital asking price in order for it to be worth it. Your missing out on some great games if you require months of playtime to make a purchase. Where does this sense of entitlement come from for MMO games? As if they arent a REAL game and you deserve to play them free of charge. FYI, they cost more to make then most single players yet you somehow think they should be free for you? |

Originally posted by Trudge34 Perfect answer. I'll never understand this sense of entitlement people feel toward a F2P game. My problem is when a f2p is more expensive then a single purchase/$15 a month mmo to bring it up to the same basic standards. Of course in that case I just don't play it. I've never dealt with PWI but from what I've read it's always sounded like that was a large problem for their games. More expensive in the long run then if you just payed the traditional model. Is that true? |
