You harvest resources in unclaimed areas, and build stuff inside your claimed area.

A better question.  Why would anyone ever trust this knucklehead ever again much less give him a job creating any form of computer game?

The people giving him a job creating a computer game are gamers who don't care about babysitting their 100 dollar donation to make sure something eventually comes from it.

There's no responsible business minded investor around to push for a project director that is minimally capable of guaranteeing a return on their six-digit investment.

"Former epic developer" is right.

What are the reasons Wildstar are for "WoW fans". When i watch videos about this game it rather reminds me on a mix between GW2 + Swtor. But since I did not play the game I cant judge it. Would be cool to hear some points, thx.

There's regular classes and regular quests in linear maps, unlike GW2. And they do not try to make a big deal out of the story at all, unlike SWTOR, but rather use the same old approach: quest text nobody reads, which can be immediately skipped through, and the occasional 10-second long birds eye cutscene. There's no writing or acting that you'll regret skipping through anywhere.

It's really just a rehash of WoW in any way you can imagine, from the "follow the map marker" quests to the cartoony art style and disregard for modern graphics technology (hey, I guess they saved money to spend on something else... I just don't see what).

As of most recent betas:

ESO feels like a below average themepark with a lot of wasted potential. The PvP (a mix of GW2's WvW and WAR's RvR) and the above-average crafting are its only highlights.

Wildstar feels like a feature-stripped version of WoW, complete with less classes, less races, less abilities, linear zones, and an art style taken from Cartoon Network to match their feature-stripped graphics engine (particle effects! wooo!).

I never thought SOE would shut me up.

The ability to swim underwater has been in Elder Scrolls games since forever.

Hence, there will probably be no underwater swimming in ESO.

Zenimax would probably say "it's too complicated for an MMO".

OP is correct that every other MMO nowadays seems to be hyped up by the press like its the second coming of Jesus. It's a gaming press thing in general, not really limited to MMOs, I believe.

The fact that ESO is not getting such treatment (despite having a much bigger franchise name) is more likely the sign of a below-average game than the sign of a great conspiracy targeting ESO in particular, though.

Another sign is the fact that you don't get radically polarized opinions from the press (neither for nor against the game), like you did with previous overhyped titles. So it's not like people are being paid to bash it into the ground, because they aren't bashing it into the ground. The reviewer consensus about ESO is "meh".

Do we really need this thread with every new game that comes out?

Many years ago, this business had only one widely accepted business model: Box sales + fixed monthly subscription. But that ship has sailed... years ago.

People now get to choose not only between different games, but also between different business models. Taking offense at the business model someone chooses to support makes you seem like one of those idiots who become offended at someone else's choice of game to subscribe to, back in the "good old days".

The advice we can give you is also the same as what any of us would have told those idiots: if you don't like it, don't buy it, don't play it. In modern times, may I add don't spend money on that game's preorder, or in that game's cash shop.

I'm not touching ESO with a ten foot pole, but guess what? I'm ok with everyone else having their 99 bucks worth of Imperial fun in any faction (or whatever it is). And I'm sure all future ESO players are ok with me not joining them. Zenimax must be ok with that too, because they sure as hell didn't decide on a business model without surveying what kind of player base it would get them, so they already know that some Elder Scrolls fans, like me, are out. And they still decided to go for it, so either I'm not any kind of majority, or they are going to crash and burn soon. Either way there's nothing for me to find "unfair" there.

You may keep playing sub-based games, and others may not. Once you learn to live with it, everybody's happy.

If those are their true intentions, then things could be done a lot simpler and with a lot less controversy:

1) Increase the monthly gain to 2000. Now everyone can buy expensive items.

2) Put a hard cap on SC that can be saved up without affecting current balances. Now people won't accrue indefinitely.

3) Keep using a separate system for consoles (how does this change solve this problem anyway?)

4) Reduce the price on station pass by 5 bucks (this was their "very important news"?).

Bam, all of the alleged current issues solved.

But instead they are turning the SC you gain monthly by means of paying the first 15 bucks for the sub into a lower-tier currency: It's not valid for storage over time, it's not valid for topping up any purchase of an item costing over 2000, and it's reduced in worth if you choose to buy an item costing under 2000.

The cash shop becomes effectively two-tiered, and only SC acquired by spending money beyond the initial 15 bucks becomes as good as the SC we get from our 15 bucks now. In exchange for that you get 1500 more of the new, low-tier, currency. Is that a good deal? It depends on where the portfolio of the shops goes from here.

It really sounds like the #4 "very important change" mentioned in their post is just an attempt to put lipstick on the pig above. It amounts to a 5-buck discount on the station pass price, which is probably not a huge success at its current price to begin with. Their portolio of P2P games is not really impressive when you consider they all have a cash shop on top (IMHO).

This whole idea of creation seems to be  a waste of time to both my wife and I.  What a brilliant scheme to get gamers to fork over even more of their money, however,  from the gamers perspective what a waste and rip off.  We are interested to know who is really excited about the idea of spending hours in a game making a keep or cabin just for the sake of building it.  We have seen the movies they have released and still see no reason to sign up for landmark.  Thoughts, arguments, agreement?

Lego ring a bell? It sure as hell isn't for everybody, but are you really surprised that such a target audience does in fact exist?

People have been building things for the enjoyment of doing it since forever. Minecraft is just a more recent and more similar example to compare Landmark to.

Damage meters, aggro lists, gear score, and hand-holding raid frames change the way everybody plays the game, so that fellow players expect you to be using them. Eventually the effect of these mods creep into the actual game design, so that the game designers expect you to be using them.

As someone who played a healer in WoW I remember debuffs which could not be pulled off without some buff/debuff filter (around TBC/WOTLK, before this kind of thing was an in-game option) and bosses that had periodic big damage spikes meant for the 2nd highest guy on the aggro list (again, something which was not possible to account for without addons).

In short, it's not like you can opt out of these kinds of addons since they change the way people expect you to play the game (be it other players, or eventually even the developers). This is what makes some people claim to hate addons in general. They don't, they just hate the fact that at some point they will effectively need certain specific addons to be able to play competitively.

People who played the China CBT said that the game is not that good

That is correct.

The game failed hard in Korea and Japan. Just look at the russian version, 3 months and nobody cares about that game!

Weird then that it took "Best in Show" during the Korea Gamer Awards in November eh?

http://massively.joystiq.com/2013/11/13/archeage-wins-big-at-korea-game-awards/

Not talking about the ArcheAge case in particular (not following that at all), but personally I would not read too much into that sort of award. I've lost count of how many overhyped "award winners" turned out to be utter garbage.

Remember the reviews praising Age of Conan for turning MMO combat around with its innovative combo system, or Warhammer Online for turning PVP around with its meaningful RvR mechanics, or SWTOR for turning MMO storytelling around with its quality writing and expensive voice acting, or GW2 for turning PVE around with its lack of a holy trinity?

The article seems to make a mess of a few different concepts, IMHO.

1) You have games that rely heavily on content meant for groups, but where finding a group doesn't require effort from the players (Rift and GW2 with public-quest type auto-grouping for rifts and hearts);

2) You have games where a big part of the content downright discourages grouping (SWTOR's personal storylines with their party class restrictions and complete lack of logical storyline flow when participating in the personal storylines of others);

3) And then in some games (arguably most) you just have enough solo content to keep people busy for so long they may not care about the type and quantity of group content available in the game (the article cites WOW, people have listed many more).

Looking at current MMOs I think #3 seems to be the rule, #1 seems to be the trend, and #2 seems to be a shot in the foot.

Yeah, this game has excellent gamepad support for a MMO. The controller scheme would only work better if it was an action combat type of MMO, cause the issues I have are mostly with the tab-targetting.

No comment from me on the supposed huge advantage of having 108 different ways to develop carpal tunnel syndrome while trying to play a game where you don't use more than 20 buttons.

1. it is attractive to Final Fantasy fans. I haven't played any of FF series (I tried, but it wasn't really my thing.), so I guess I can be objective or even critical to FF environment.

2. end game contents 'may' be cool. But it is a long way for a gamer who's worn down by similar games.

...

If you like Japanese style fantasy world, you may even love this game. (I don't like them.)

If you already know that you don't like the FF series, and that you don't like the art style, and that you are burnt out from theme park quests... why did you even waste money on this game?

I agree that the game is not groundbreaking, but the job system and the crafting do bring something unique to the table. Even if they're not new concepts, they are concepts that haven't been done well in other recent games.

Asura have lasers, robots, battle suits, teleportation devices and holograms. They had all of them in GW1, too. Why wouldn't they have boomboxes?

You guys are reaching.  Would the Asura, should they invent the boombox, put this music in it?  You can make all the lore excuses you want, but it's really just a toy prop, and an annoying one at that.

Yes, they would. Silly crap which I hate has taken over GW lore, I agree with you there... but this has been hapenning since the introduction of the Asura in GW1. Just look at the character creation options for Asura in GW2 - "your greatest invention was... a personal butler robot" (which probably did something else stupid, I forget).

The issues you point out are not new or a consequence of the boombox... The stupidization (IMHO) of GW lore is a few years old and not many people seem to care as much as we do.

I really have to ask this though....is this worse than the first launch of the game?

The actual game is nowhere as bad as it used to be, but the overall service quality so far is pretty much at the bottom of the list of full-price, sub-based MMOs.

OP, I agree with you about the level of service that should be expected, but these guys do not meet it. They're no CCP, Trion or Blizzard in terms of customer service. Your actual choices are probably the usual pick between being treated like shit and waiting for the product to work, eventually, or doing a chargeback.

The buying experience really isn't great, you do have to go through multiple pointless steps before you can actually login. After that you will sadly get all the other MMO standard fare - random disconnects, server queues at best and try again later messages at worst, etc. Then if/when you get past all that, it's pretty much the same game as every other company's all over again, anyway.

The only distinction this thing gets is that it managed to fail twice where most MMOs only fail once.

They have a cost increase of about 130 M worldwide, of which 70 M was in the parent company. I assume this means Korea, although all of the marketing expense seems to be allocated there as well (?).

Also, 45 M of those 70 M is labor cost alone. Development of a new game in-house or some freaky overhead increase? They do talk about "more investment in R&D".
