So this is supposed to be a pretty major 'hotness' update... and you can download it now from Microsoft.  I know Windows Live comes with DX10 so some people have been playing LotRO with DX10 already... so I'm wondering if anyone has any screens of their DX10 LotRO... what the difference really is... and if I download it how much of a difference it would really make.  Basically, is it worth the download?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Being a more casual player rather than a ‘leet’ player who just shoots through the game to get THROUGH it, I enjoy the game a great deal. I’m really glad I went with Lifetime cuz I can play relaxed with friends rather than rush and worry if I’m getting my money’s worth. I enjoy constant Role Playing interaction on Landroval which of course slows gameplay down, but once again, that’s what I enjoy so it works for me… especially since this is the first mmoRPG where the ‘RP’ seemed to exist in an obvious way.

Also, Turbine was smart and developed a very rock solid base, and can only build from here. The game will get better in time with more features and all that jazz… much better than what sadly happened to Vanguard.

Truth be told - I'm at work on a crappy machine that can't handle Rappelz :\ I've got a pretty boring job but it's easy and I sit in front of a computer doing nothing most of the time lol... so I'm looking for a lil mmo this thing can handle which is popular cuz I hate single player games.  FlyFF, Scions of Fate I'll def. check out! Thanks to everyone who's giving me suggestions I appreciate it!

I want to be able to buy some in game money [legally] or items though but not that many games seem to have legal item shops... ah well

Cheers mates

Hey Everyone,

Here's what I'm looking for... a great little mmorpg [like a desktop game - Ragnarok?] which is FREE to play but lets me buy some cool gear if I want to spend on just what I want.  I don't mind spending money on items I actually want... but have no idea which game allows it.

Any suggestions on great/fun/popular games which have lots of people to play with?  Thanks in advance

cheers

Best is BY FAR: Lord of the Ring ONLINE [On Landroval, the unofficial RP Server].  A lot of people role play and many of the players seem to be 25+, really mature, kind and considerate.  Not all of course, but most.

Worst: Star Wars Galaxies [NGE] tried it out and I've never felt so damn alone in an MMO... everyone was just kind of doing their own thing.  I may have been able to really converse/role play with another player about twice in my month of play.  It breaks my heart because I love Star Wars and I really think it's the absolute property to make an amazing MMO... but SWG isn't it.

It has been marked several times that it is a game for casual players , players who have the attention span to read the quests as well as do a little roll playing. There is over a years worth of content for me to play through and with the added update coming , that will will just add to the content  list and give me even more to play through.

If you log in everyday for 3 hours or more, you need to take a break , and get more activities in your life, like riding a bike, hiking, going out with friends.  This game is the perfect balance if you really want to live your life, and play a game at the same time .

Also, if you say you reached the end game , level 50. Please post your characters screen shot , no screen shots, then you are simply talking out your bunghole.

Agreed! I'm still only level 24 with my main character mostly due to the fact that I play whenever I'm not doing other things like goin out with friends and all that jazz... then when I do play it's often with friends and usually Role playing so everything takes longer of course but that's alright because we're having a blast... the game is quite right for the casual/role player.  I really didn't realize LotrO needed 'saving' lol

What server are you people playing on?? I play on Landroval and have to say that the community is at LEAST 70% awesome, and 60% role players.

I play as a Captain and generally help out people when they face tough odds - sometimes I'll join them if they have a lil too much on the plate, or sometimes I'll just run by and give a powerful shout at the enemy taking them down just enough to give the other player the edge to win.

HOWEVER, when I see idiot players run into a camp of enemies and aggro everything, I think it's a lesson they have to learn.  Their death will teach them [hopefully] not to be so bold and stupid... this lesson is very important so that when they join groups, they won't aggro everything and piss everyone off!

Since I RP a lot, I tend to help everyone with everything I can since my character is a 'good captain'.  Sometimes, it does tick you off when you obviously just saved someone and they just run off like it was nothing, at which time I usually just /tell ...welcome.

An MMO based on the universe of ADVENT RISING.  So much great sci-fi mmo potential...

My option wasn't there either, so I went with option two which was the closest to "Yes I will be playing BioWare's Star Wars MMORPG!" ... I'm still hopeful... facts make it possible if you do the research ;)

I was in the Old Forrest hunting wolves, when suddenly this baldy human champion runs up to me and waves.  I waved back and spoke in roleplaying fashion:

Me: "Hail stranger."

Champ: "Kill?"

Me: "What? Wolves? Yes I'm killing wolves."

Champ: "Kill?"

Me: "Care to join me?"

Champ: "Kill."

Me: *invites champ*

Champ: *Declines from joining fellowship*

Champ: "Kill?"

Me: "Aaallllright... what?!"

Champ: */confused*  "Kill?"

Me: */confused /laugh*

Champ: "KILL!" *Runs off*

--- Ya had to be there... it was odd, but funny.

there a few that i like about it....try to find a buddy key, thats the best way to know if you would like it or not.

The montly sub is 14.99 for anyone who didn't pre-order the game and thus was a founder. Just a clarification in case you go to buy the game and find out the monthly price is not what you thought it would be. Still worth it by far if you ask me.  I've been in many beta's and watched many games launch - none has ever been as ready as LotR:O.  Turbine is doing a great job taking care of their community and work VERY HARD for us.  So if you join in, welcome to Middle-Earth

I am an honest person and I can tell you that I didn't play past the first Beta. I got to level 20 ish and just couldn't take the monotony of doing boring quests anymore. I've been lurking on these forums for the past couple of days to be convinced that the game has changed from boring quests to more interesting quests to grind on. Since quests are the main form of xp in this game, I want those quests to be engaging and interesting. Not reduce population, collect items, go around an click these things for this or that, carry this or that to this or that person, and deliver this type quests. That is the majority of quests I had during Beta and it bored the hell out of me. It honestly felt like doing chores around the house. I forget what the place is called, but it is N. of Breeland and then west before the town S. of the Shire. It was a creepier area and was harder than Breeland. That was more challenging, but the quests there weren't anymore engaging really. Plus, people didn't like to group a whole lot since most things were soloable if you just wait till you level up one or two more levels (to out level the creatures). I found the same problem in WoW and it is because of quest based driven content. You almost have to start out with a group of friends and only quest when they do if you want to play with other people.

Now there is a thought. If I had friends that play video games, which I don't, or instead met people that would be willing to form a fellowship that only played with each other and only played their characters when the others were online, I would probably pick up the game. I did this on DDO and it was enjoyable. However, in DDO, it was a once a week thing and I would want to do it 3-5 times a week at least. The problem is that the quests then become way to easy, because most of the quests cater to the solo gamer.

I am a group gamer through and through, but I do enjoy some solo content when I can't find a group. Games that cater to the group are usually grind games, whereas games that cater to soloers are story/quest driven games. Which is fine if they had enough group quests to break up the solo quests every 2-3 levels and an active "mature" community to group with, that aren't loot whores and etc.

Another problem that current players have confirmed is the different color armor you walk around with as you level. I am a RPer mainly, so as I quest, I want to look good and be good at the same time. Games like DAoC and SWG accomplished this through allows items to be created as good as loot and colored to the players liking or through dyes.

I have the money to throw around on a game, but it doesn't mean I will if that game doesn't have the whole package. I've learned my lesson by buying games that don't appeal to me in the past. Which is why I now have over 12 MMORPGs played and sitting on my shelf. I know what I like and I can tell how a game will be within the first 20 levels. Like others have said, if you can't hook a player in the first 20 levels, you probably won't. It doesn't mean LOTRO is a bad game, it just means it is a bad simulation, which is what I am looking for. I have Co-op and 1 player games for stories and quests, even those have more customization available. When I pick up a MMORPG, I expect to enter another reality entirely and be able to feel like I am actually living in that world (immersion). Being driven around doing retarded quests that even I can think of better stories for people to do, is immersion breaking.

Anyways, better stop ranting now. I admit I am long winded. Don't want to bore anyone here.

NOTE: I MAY NOT LIKE LOTRO, BUT IT IS THE MOST POLISHED GAME I HAVE SEEN RELEASED. THAT SAYS A LOT FOR TURBINE, CONSIDERING HOW SMALL THE COMPANY IS COMPARED TO SOE AND OTHERS.

I've read everything, and wholeheartedly agree.  I pray the quests become more interesting cuz man am I bored of killing the same monsters with higher levels and collecting 'boar meat'.  While I love this game, I'm hoping that more interesting things come along soon.  Customization, I've always said is the weakest link of this game.  Hopefully one day a better game will come along... for now Lotro is the most polished and I've got many friends playing so grouping is not a prob usually... and even strangers seem to group up quite quickly with me... but one day, a great MMO will be crafted.  One day.  Til then, or at least for now, LotRO will do it for me simply because it's the best that I can find and I enjoy the lore.

Sounds like you should be just fine - I have a friend running on a crappy old celeron with a horrible vid card and she's able to play with very low settings.  The game really works quite well on weaker machines from what I hear - try to get a buddy key if you can to test it out.  There is a great website which I forget the URL of right now, which allows you to select a game and it runs a scan of your pc to tell you if you can run it.  I'm at work, I have it bookmarked at home... I'll try to find it for you.  If anyone knows the site pls post it.

Exercise your willpower. If your real life is turning to crap because you have a problem, learn to recognize that problem. I’ve never had a problem enjoying a game, going out with my girl, doing my work and taking care of all other aspects of real life and having a social life – Just use common sense. Parental lock out makes GREAT sense, but for older players who have this problem here’s my suggestion:

Sign up for a rehab program where if you don’t take care of your real life, a big mean man shows up to smack the crap out of you until you stop being a basement dwelling loser [no offense but seriously now…] and get your shit sorted out. It’s a game. Enjoy it, have fun with it but remember you have your real life to live. When you’re on your deathbed, do you want y our flashback to be a gag reel of MMO MOMENTS? I hope not.

$0E does NOT have exclusive rights as LEC has been quoted as 'considering other MMO developers to expand upon the Star Wars brand as they feel it is popular enough to handle even two MMO's but nothing has actually been decided.  This was a quote from years ago, but I wish I had a link to it.  Sorry I do not and can't find it - if someone does please post.

IF BioWare is indeed developing [and has been for years] a new Star Wars mmo, then I hope it is NOT KotoR but KotNR.  Knights of the New Republic.  After the movies - with the Remnant Empire, New Republic and perhaps based on some of Timothy Zhan's novels for story - heck follow the books for story I'd be happy with it.

It should be VERY SANDBOX but at the same time have the EPIC story arc.

This game is the absolute best MMORPG I've ever played when it comes to the Community.  I suppose it helps that I play on the 'unofficial RP server' where like-minded players migrate, but truly the community is incredible minus a few bad annoyingly apples.

Turbine really cares, and it shows.  If you're a role player, I don't think there's been a better MMO for you yet.  At the end of the day, it's really what you make of a game but I can say hands down that so far in my online role playing years, LotR:O has already been the most fun.

Role Players, come on in

And non-role players, you're welcome too... please don't be an ignorant zealot either way... don't bash rpers, don't bash non-rpers, just have a good time.

Be excellent to each other.

~Bill & Ted.

I love the fact that people are RPing in LOTRO, however, I'm a hardcore RPer and this game doesn't appeal to me for the following reasons:

1. I prefer to RP while on an adventure, but the quests are boring and feel like chores. The combat is boring, because the creatures and NPC's aren't challenging to me. Plus I can't customize my character to my liking, like you can in games that have that freedom to do so (UO, SWG, Darkfall etc.)

2. There aren't any player ran cities or organizations that have their own hierarchy and politics. I like to RP in a world where I have the freedom to build my own kingdom or swear loyalty to anothers and serve as their Knight, Archmage, Scholar etc.

3. RP without conflict is just online chatting pretty much. I prefer to RP during a time of war. War is where people get to adventure or take part in epic battles. Screw the tavern, give me a sword and shield and let me fight the fierce invaders from another kingdom coming to steal our kingdom away from us, and then pillage our villages and rape and murder our children. No way will I let them do that.

RP from what I've seen in LOTRO has more to do with chatting in taverns and such than actual adventure. I'm a RP adventurer and soldier, not a drinker at a bar, nor is my characters ever social enough with strangers to just sit and talk about where I came from. I love RP and I am a hardcore RPer. RP in it's proper form cannot take place and be entertaining for most without something or someone to kill. And right now, try as you might, you can't convince me that reducing the spider population or carrying a bucket of water is fun.

You my friend need a truly GREAT Sandbox MMO, and so do I hehe.  But LotR:O is the best offer of an MMO on the table for me right now so I stick with it until some truly NEXT GEN mmo's come out.  I thought Vanguard would be my mmo and I was rooting for it so hard but ... well we all know how that went.  To be totally honest, there is NO GREAT Mmo right now.  Not a single one lives up to my hopes but that's alright... they're a lot of very hard work, the industry is still young and hopefully in the next 5 years, it will evolve to something more to my liking.  Customization is the #1 thing to me but really, what makes an MMO truly great is FREEDOM OF OPTIONS.  The more options the better.  But Vanguard tried to be full of options and it ended up just being full of 'potential'.
