So I wanted to start a thread to get some ideas from the community at large about the forums here. Not necessarily the layout or functionality of them, thats something for another time really. I'm mainly interested in hearing feedback about how they're handled. The rules, moderation, what you like and don't like (and don't tell me you don't like being moderated, no one does) what you think could be improved, are we too harsh, too lenient, too many rules, too few, etc. I can't make any promises that I'll change things in a drastic way, but I definitely want to take a look at things and go from there. I get tons of feedback email on the subject, but it's always hard to judge from those since you have to take the vocal minority into account. Plus people who are happy rarely take the time to write in without encouragement while the ones who are unhappy are quick to pull the trigger.

So anyway, post away, I'll compile some notes on the matter and go from there.

Thanks!

I'm also one of the many who was trying this game out, to see if it'd be a good fit for my kids' first MMO, and got completely sucked in. In fact I've barely gotten around to showing it to them yet. Great game all around, and I agree with the above poster, definitely some lessons to be learned here.

We wanted to do a continuation of today's Dev Chat so I figured I'd gather up some community questions to send their way. So, post your questions here and I'll go through em and send off a bunch to the fine folks behind Runes of Magic and see what we can learn!

One question:  Did you ask (or was there any mention) of the new secret MMO Blizzard is working on?  If it's a fantasy title, I will be especially interested.

WOW is great, but after four years, I'm ready for a new MMO world to adventure in.

Oh trust me I asked, as futile as I knew asking would be. This is Blizzard we're talking about here, they won't be talking about that project at all for quite a while to come I'm surem specially with all the attention they can milk out of D3 and SC2 for the time being, saving the new MMO for after the hype on those 2 die down is a fairly smart PR move.

Nope, the only thing I heard of regarding BNet is them trying to come up with ways to make money off of it... That may or may not include the forums, who knows. But I will say I don't know how much credibility I put in that report, cause I've never really had anyone from Blizzard so blatantly dodge one of my questions like that. Sure, it may very well be something they can't talk about, but I've never gotten the 'no comment' brush off...

What, no mention of the WoW movie? no preview they said could be in this year's blizzcon? no info on even when a preview could be seen? well, another reason Blizzard annoys me of late, saying things are coming, but taking their grand ole time getting it done. The word stagnant comes to mind when it comes to World of Warcraft and this supposed movie. It's why I left and why I'm not coming back until they fix the lack of content over such a length of time.

There was one very brief mention of the movie, in the Q&A panel someone asked about it, and was given a very vague "It's going to be amazing!" answer, or something along those lines. But that was it really.

Hello,

Thank you for your review of the event. I was there with a friend both days. Although I am a casual game player, I have to admit I found this event some what fun for what it was. I was hoping for something that was more community driven though. Very little of what they did at this show brought the community together. It was a show rather than a gathering. Sure the opening ceremony was nice, we got to listen to the president of Blizzard give his hype about the company and the Con. I found some of the panels interesting. And the closing was very nice with all of the music and comedy.

The only parts of this show that I felt tried to bring the community together were the stage contests... Costume, Dance and /Silly contests.

Other community events I've been to, they've had banquet halls where everyone attending would have the chance to sit down and have dinner with each other while listening to the stage act. They had server gatherings, real live quests (not just visiting shops and standing in hour long lines) and contests (not just for the people that were pre-qualified). And t-shirt was given to each and every one of the guests as well as a bag of swag.

Yes, I know that doing these types of things for the mass amount of people WOW attracts would be very difficult to pull off but I feel there could have been so much more for the community rather than the show we got. Heck, I would have paid an extra $100 for a dinner and a night at Disneyland.

Blizzcon to me felt like a scaled down version of E3 rather than the community event it should have been. Would I go again? Probably, like I said before, I found some parts of it interesting.

Oh I definitely agree, some of the other events definitely have a more "community togetherness" feel to them, but that's a lot easier to do when, take the DAoC Roundtable for example, you "sell out" of tickets at around 350 people instead of 15,000. Or even a couple thousand like SOE's events it's still doable, but once you've gotten to the numbers that BlizzCon attracts, you're pretty much forced to let the community come up with their own. I saw lots of big groups of people who met up in the 'Realm Meet-Up' areas who went from there. I will say though, having experience working on that side of the fence, setting up community events, it is very hard to balance the level of community related events versus just free time and options to do stuff. Lotsa people who come out to these things don't necessarily want the entire event to be planned out and scheduled for them, they prefer the looser approach with just optional events and panels. I couldn't imagine trying to do it at this level.

I'll be there covering the event for the site, so whatever they announce you'll hear it here. :) There's also a sticky thread in this section if you have any questions or such you'd like me to look into while there.

So I'll be heading out to Anaheim here shortly to attend/cover BlizzCon for the site and was wondering if you folks had any questions you'd like me to take along with me, or suggestions/requests for anything about the convention itself you'd like me to see/visit/photo/cover/etc. So yeah, post here and let me know, I'll compile it all together and see what I can do! :)

Oh?

Didn't I?

The flight in the game is there because of the combat system, it’s all about the aerial combat. Flying really isn’t meant to be used to get from point A to point B, though if you want, you certainly can. You are limited in the amount of time you can stay airborne, and if you don’t keep an eye on your timer, you WILL plummet out of the sky like a rock. And there are skills in the game targeted solely at the aerial combat (knockdowns, for example). If you thought knockdowns were a useful skill when fighting on the ground, wait ‘till you nail one a couple hundred feet in the air.

"limited in the amount of time you can stay airborne" == timer as far as I know...

what did you do exactly?

Almost every single thing I talked about in this article, as the developer was talking to me about it, I was looking at it in game. That's the main reason its all as sporadic as it is, we came to different topics as I stumbled upon it in the game. The Stigma system for example, I was going through the different panels of the Character window in game and saw the Stigma panel and asked about it. I flew, I fought, I did quests, I explored... I did lots of things...

My comments about liking the game after only 2-3 hours was based mostly on the fact that I went in with pretty low expectations and a lot of assumptions/expectations because it was another Korean MMO. I was pleasantly surprised and really liked what I saw so far. Does that mean I'll like the final product? Beats me, I wish I was that psychic, I'd win a couple lottos over the next couple weeks. Don't try to read too much into it, I liked what I saw, I enjoyed what I got to play, nothing more, nothing less, I'm not declaring it the end-all be-all of MMOs or anything, just my opinion of what was presented to me at PAX.

Wrong.  No one "paid" to be part of the beta by pre-ordering the game. The price you paid for the pre-order is subtracted from the price you will pay for the retail box when you go pick it up on launch day. So if you paid $5 on your pre-order, the retail box will cost $5 less on launch day. Also, if you decide during beta that the game isn't for you, you can cancel your pre-order and get that $5 back. So you're not out any extra money to test the game regardless of if you end up buying the game or not. Of course this probably varies from store to store, but everywhere I've ever pre-ordered or bought games from this has been the policy.

Open beta doesn't start until the 7th. This weekend is just another preview weekend, which as far as I know, just because you are on the open beta list, doesn't mean you can get on during the preview weekends. I could be wrong but I think they operate off of seperate lists.

Ok folks, seriously, you're losing track of what this thread is meant to be. If you want to argue about religion or possible and impossible death causes for people of a young age, or well anything else for that matter take it somewhere else.

Incarnate has posted another update on what has been going on with the game, recent changes, etc.

I imagine you've all seen the various new addons and things that have made their debut since the new dynamic-object-updating tools have gone into production use. This has been super cool for me, as I can create, prototype/test, and roll out new addons and ship variants without having to do any kind of visible update, server restart or client patch. It all gets pushed out invisibly. You can expect more "Stuff" to appear within the game as I fill in holes in license progressions (ie, the recent low-level Heavy Weapons additions) as well as add new content to the upper levels and major Accomplishments/Badges.

What you haven't seen, as of yet, is the much larger work going on to revise the universe. Our game universe was designed a number of years ago, based on then-common system configurations and some uncertainty about how many users might be in a given sector at once. As a result, it's a bit sparse, and a bit boring. Additionally, in more recent times we've added some cool new features to the game engine, like fogging and the related radar extenders and wireframe-radar-visualization.. but have yet to use these very much beyond our much-maligned Ion Storms. This will change.
