Give the "What if" aspect of the question a chance ppl, my god there are some miserable bastards around here.

I'd like to think that if you had a large group of companies who could pool their resources to create an MMO that you could possibly produce a rather unique game.

SoE has a vast wealth of MMO experience, Trion is willing to try something new, CCP are able to provide the political and economical aspects, Arenanet could give us something that creates a more even playing field for all and Funcom could give us a unique setting and great story.

Isn't that what forums are for? To discuss and argue over things we don't agree about?

The world would be a very dull and quiet place if everyone always shared the same opinions.

Well I actually thought it was about sharing ideas/discussions with like minded ppl who you may share some common ground with, and so progress those ideas and discussions without them becoming lost under a wave of pointless bickering.

Define Sandbox.

Now define Themepark.

Now, if you remove those entirely, what do you have?

You did not think this through did you?

If you do have some alternative to these, please, do tell.

An mmo that embraces RTS and 4X genres along with the game Risk

Nations vs Nations conquering the world piece by piece. Technology Apochs and the like from RTS games.

Tell me you wouldn't play a mmo version of Starcraft, Age of Empires or Sins of a Solar Empire...

The games you listed have online play, how would you make them an MMO but not Sandbox or Themepark?

They wouldn't be either the only "thing" sandbox about them is the fact that you would be taking over individual characters. Most sandboxes do not have goals other than the players making their own goal. Most themeparks are making you follow on an established path. The ultimate point of the game is Expanding, Exploring, Exterminating and  Exploiting. On the surface to lure MMO players in the game looks like a sandbox but looking at it from a greater scope it plays like an RTS/4X game.

The key point is we are all part of -one- nation looking to establish its dominance. Imagine Daoc with the same realm vs realm setup but instead of constant tug of war a world map that looks like a RISK map with other factions all working to conquer the world.

Normal RTS games have me controlling one "nation" and you controlling another. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about Starcraft where every individual piece is controlled by a player. IE: All of the terrans are actual players working together to take out those guys the Protoss or the Zerg who are also made up of players controlling an individual piece of each "nation army".

Exactly, you've just given examples that are not placed within Sandbox or Themepark, yet you have a poster wanting you to pick one to make it fit, why?

There are threads here that shout at us "MMO's are dying", and yet here we have a developer who is doing something different, something that brings the player closer to the developer in an effort to reinvigorate the MMO process and to give it some meaning to us.

Most if not all of us realise that the MMO process isn't like the CSI shows cracking a case in 30 minutes flat, it takes years of mundane tasks to get to the finished product, it takes longer if your creating something that isn't a clone of WoW.

So why are ppl surprised at the rate of progress once they get involved in that process with the developers?

As for the magic trick, well your walking a mile in the developers shoes now, I could not imagine doing that and still stay dedicated to that game, I start to analyse why I'm playing that game when I know all the tricks to it, it becomes boring real fast, a bit like playing on a private shard of any MMO and being able to kill anything, loot anything, go anywhere without dying, the game, the challenge of that game has vanished and will never come back.

This is as close to an admission of outright lying / misleading customers as we are going to get,

H1Z1 is the most cynical sort of blatant cash grab  this industry has devolved into.

And yet SoE put their hand up and are refunding ppl who are not happy with the way things have been dealt with. If SoE had sat on their hands and did nothing your remark would be warranted, however SoE reacted quickly due to the immense nature of their cock-up compared to alot of the other gaming companies out there that have been dragged kicking and screaming to reimburse players.

Although I am surprised at how quickly they did respond to this problem. I wonder how many will take up their offer.

Why do I get the feeling that this argument from the OP is based on the perception that Voxel tech has never advanced.

I fear that no matter what is required to play a game that would make a player more accountable, it would still not prevent players from behaving badly towards each other.

All MMO's have GMs in some form, to help with in-game issues, yet with this presence players will still behave in a way to warrant a GM's investigation, knowing that if they are found guilty, some form of punishment will be dealt out.

CCTV camera's are all over our towns/cities yet has this stopped ppl from attacking others, from robbing shops, from ripping out ATM's, from road rage etc etc, no it hasn't stopped any of this, all it has done is help the authorities find out who was responsible and then punish them.

So adding any extra layer of personal data to our accounts just makes it easier for the GM's to find us when we screw up, it won't change my behavior in the slightest, I have nothing to hide or fear and I certainly don't play any games to make other players lives a misery.

Another generic Korean mmo, just what the genre needed.

Ditto.

It's so straight it has to be a sarcastic post.

How sad and ironic. Carbine brought out an MMO that has tried to bring back a real hardcore feeling when raiding. Yet a certain popular MMO has gone in the opposite direction and taken everyone who used to have a spine with them, all those players who used to enjoy a real challenge in a dungeon, not the racerolling you can look forward to wth each over-due expac.

I have enjoyed WS and I don't want to see this game get crushed by those who can't see past their noses, who have become so used to a developer dumbing their products down so much a snail on prozac could be decked out in epics in a day.

...myself included with ARPG such as Path of Exile, but that kept me interested for only 3 weeks. So, I'm wondering if there are other old time MMORPG gamers out there who have migrated or intend to toward other multiplayer PC gamers out there?

$ for some might not be as important out there, but definitely it is for me...Honestly, I would've gladly continue to be involved with this genre November when WOW:WoD comes...I just can't seem to stomach the $140 to $230 price tag to enjoy it for 6 months to a year...After all it's just one single, outdated game.

The rest "F2P MMORPG's" out there seem too restrictive or not worth it, plus lack of content updates to be enjoyed or maeby there is some gem out of the many I could be missing. Anyways, my focus for the time being is to move away from this genre to other multiplayer PC games and there are just soooo many, which can only be harder to choose from. So many recommend so many different games and then some are paid to, especially the prominent reviewers on known sites.

I'd have to say, and it's probably true for others aswell, but I have never restricted myself to just MMO's for my gaming enjoyment.

There are just as many entertaining genres out there other than MMO's, and have been for many years.

So I'd say that rather than MMO players migrating away from the genre, I would say that it's always been a mixed bag of games/genre's that has kept many players interested in PC gaming.

My god that sounded dreadful. Glad they cancelled that pile.

Sims + FPS = wtf.

Sorry no, I don't want a day job as a butcher and then get called into missions during my lunchbreak. Who thought of this? No wonder they "didn't find the fun" it's sounds abjectly despair inducing.

They probably saw Destiny and the Division and were like, meh ours is like that except we added a really lame daytime job function. I bet they were planning on making job related goods sellable via real life currency.

I'd have to agree, the more I read that report the more I was put off by what they where hoping to deliver to us.

A mundane day job that if I wanted to I could ignore the missions and keep plodding through, wow that sounds sooo exciting, if that's what was coming down the pipe after 7 yrs then they made the right choice in calling time.

If Titan is as described this could have potentially been a massive flop, at best a niche game, it is veering too far off the beaten track, trying to be too different to feel comfortable to gamers, and we all know how gamers enjoy huge change in their MMO's!!

A shame really, I wasn't exactly keeping this title on my radar, but I would have liked to see if they could replicate the same success as WoW.

In the days of EQ, you would never see the type of comments made you see in every online game today.  Chat has technically changed very little, people who play mmos have.

Its unfortunate, but there should be some sort of chat moderation.

I wonder how this would break down figuring in free accounts vs pay accounts?  I would assume that its the ftp peeps only cause its easy to and you dont care if you get banned.  FE had seperate channels for certain levels or ftp players if i recall, perhaps something like that might work?

From my own personal experience I would say that EQ was and is no better than any other MMO, even when it first came out. The "Play Nice" rules didn't come about in EQ1 because ppl respected each other, they came about because ppl where fed up with the attitudes of other players and how they could affect their gaming time.

The racist issues has always been there, it's been around since the dawn of human beings for heavens sake, and just because we play Online games does not suddenly mean everyone becomes an online saint and forgets their own flaws while playing, infact in most cases they become exaggerated.

By all means bring to the attention the bad behaviour of players, but don't think for one moment it is confined to any particular game, it isn't, it's human nature, and it will take many many more years before ppl are able to get along respectfully with each other.

So it seems, much like in Alpha, AA is now running rampant with F2P BOT players simply leveling up while AFK. Today alone I managed to report 8 of them by using the the in-game report mechanic. There are also threads reporting of people using massive teleport hacks for doing trade pack runs. No idea what that entails but the fact this game offers F2P, I can only imagine the uphill battle Trion has in store since you know they wont do an IP or Mac Address ban.

Queue's are now a secondary problem folks, cause F2P has just opened up a crap storm of problems. I'm beginning to hate F2P games, that is for sure.

I'm sure you can cast your mind back to recent MMO releases, ESO being one where Bots where rampant. The forums where ablaze with unhappy players throwing mud at the Developers for allowing the game to be circumvented by cheaters.

Take a look at ESO boards now, the cheaters/botters where dealt with, ofc some still find ways but the mass infiltration of these lower life forms more or less disappeared after a few months.

AA has years ahead of it, sure there will be damage done in the short term, but it's amazing how quickly economies recover after cheaters/botters have been expelled from the game.

As for F2P being part of the problem, well take a look at Trions other games, Rift and Defiance, I play both and have yet to see wide spread botting or cheaters impacting the game.

AA is new in the West, there are those that are taking advantage of a new market, if there was no market there would be no botters, so it's a vicious circle as some players are helping to feed that market.

If your enjoying AA then give it some time to sort it's problems out, too many players have little to no patience when it comes to gaming these days and expect instant results, where it would normally take developers weeks/months to find a lasting solution to a player created problem ie it's the players who are buying botter goods/funds.

It's an important distinction to make, although I thought it was pretty obvious from the start... maybe I just read more closely than others.

yes, it was obvious from the start precisely because they stated exactly what the situation was.

Just some people are just ... well ...

announced today that the company sold more than $500 million of Destiny into retail stores and first parties worldwide as of day one, making the game the biggest new video game franchise launch in history.

Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,

The OP's post shouldn't even be necessary.

We all know that, but let the guy think he was the only person on the planet to have spotted it.

I've been keeping my eye on Pathfinder and what the OP has posted has just made my mind up, this is going to be a game that I will WANT to play.

AH not yet in-game, bah who needs one when you can create your own as we did in EQ1, and whats more it was alot more fun that way, real haggling for starters, having to travel to that one location in the world where all the sellers congregated  added a huge amount of realism to the game, not having an AH actually improved the game for me and many others in EQ1.

Graphics, well yes I must admit I do like my graphics and things have moved along alot since EQ1 in that department, I would have been disappointed if they had taken a step backwards with Pathfinder.

As for it being a complex game, thats something I can also live with.

I do like the sound of rare drops being rare, I remember fondly finding a cracked staff on a skeleton in EQ1 and knowing I'd hit the jackpot =), knowing that things are going to rarely drop in the game creates a different feeling when something does actually drop for you, it gave it a sense of real worth.

All in all OP I think Pathfinder is still on the right track, looking forward to it's release.

I see people claiming this a lot and it's perplexing to me. SOE selling founder packs for alpha access in no way makes this crowd funded. Sure they have a more open earlier development but that doesn't make this crowd funded, there was no kickstarter, SOE had the funds to start this, players are not investors or backers.

Just seems like pulling the wool over peoples eyes so they can get more money by emulating kickstarter.

Feel free to enlighten me on the subject...

Don't get me wrong this has nothing to do with the game which I think has some cool concepts but the way it's being branded. I'm not even sure SOE called it crowd funded but they hammer the help us build the game thing all the time which seems a little disingenuous.

So to go back to the title: How is this game crowd funded?

It was never advertised as crowd funded, it has not relied upon crowd funding to become a reality, it has not had to hit a crowd funding target to even get made.

Those that have been spouting off that this is crowd funded may aswell call any game that collects a subscription as a crowd funded game, the definitions could quite easily be loosely attached to any product, if your willing to mislead ppl.

I look upon the founders packs as an advertising gimmick, one that has become alot more popular with the gaming industry, they saw an opening whereby players wanted to get into a developing game ASAP, no matter the cost or state of the game there are many ppl out there that want to get in on the ground floor, SoE took advantage of that.

However it makes no difference to me if ppl want to believe this is crowd funded, I am just looking forward to it's release.

This sounds like alot of fun, I'm really interested in joining up for this and starting over from scratch.

The stories are just so engrossing, TSW has always been one of those MMO's that just sucks me in.

I kind of feel the zombie fad has come and gone already.    The current zeitgeist seems to be moving back into a cold war type mindset except the enemies are more brutal and Nazi like instead of brainless zombies.   Maybe EQNext will capture that essence.

You'd be wrong.  Zombie games, and more importantly Zombie Survival games are becoming their own genre and are growing.

I'd have to agree. There seems to be no end of ways for developers to keep introducing us to our Brain eating zombie friends. If we take a look at Films and T.V for guidance we have only scratched the surface of Zombie survival games.

So long as the games are done well I see no reason for more of them to make their way to our Hd's, just like any Fantasy game, you will always get plenty of crap along with some real diamonds.

The answer is - attunment process.

Players that get attuned join guilds that are already attuned so they can raid immediately, leaving the rest of their old guildmates stuck.

There is no reward for helping others attune - so this creates the disparity between the haves (attuned) and have nots (everyone else).

So lots of players that reach 50 and realize that they are essentially stuck without guilds help, quit.

That's the core problem - there is no easy fix as nerfing attunment will piss off the hardcore elite which is who the raiders are in WS.

but you provided an answer already: reward attuned players for helping unattuned players gear up.

somehow make it worth their while to put in some small effort to help others attune. i think that's a great solution, for a lot of games really.

Instead of rewarding players already attuned why not instead give new players "guest attunement", allow them access but restrict the loot table for guests, however once the dungeon is finished your new player is attuned and able to gain full access to the full loot table.

It's one work around, EQ1 had to look at their own flagging system when guilds found it less rewarding to redo old content to help new members catch them up, so they allowed players to gain flagging for content through other means, that did not involve forcing the entire guild to repeat old lower tiered content that they really did not want to do again.

Also "Pissing off" the raiding elite isn't an issue when it's accounting for a miniscule player base, take care of the majority first then take another look at how to reward your hardcore players without shutting off content to casual players.
