Lord of the Rings Online: Two Years, Book 8 and Beyond
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/24/09 1:24:15 PM
looks good - shame the European servers arent able to provide the 2nd tear return freeplay for 10 day to entice people back. Wish I'd played on a US server now - DOH.

I keep going back and always love the game and Ive been there since beta. Its a great game, lovely crafting system and so many friendly people. Its a shame its a small community, but such is life. It is definitely worth a vist, lovely landscapes, nice quests, fun mobs. Good luck.

He is so right on this matter - even on the 'role playing' servers, not THAT much role playing goes on anymore. In EQ it is an easy place to get all the 'l33t' gear as the flagging os NODROP is removed; in WoW it is just anotehr server - BUT in both cases I have seen some truly GREAT role playing going on, In EQ we played in a great guild by the name 'The Fighting Chefs of Norrath' where in the early days we literaly adventured to gain ingredients to cook with, whether it was Guk ale or Wyrm steaks... In WoW the Scarlet Brotherhood were truly awesome to behold, theirreligious fervour caused all manner of great arguments, but slowly it slipped into personal attacks at the players behind the game and at my last sight of them they were a shadow of their former sleves (I hope you made it back there). On LotRO there is an enforced role play server that seems to be standingup well; but the race to be the first to the highest level will always take priority over the time to kick back and smoke some pipeweed or have a drink watching the sun go down over the bay while the pirates maneuver round the reef to try tp get into port and safety.

Just wacthed this on YouTube. Great to see someone talking about their game in detail, showing what is actuallyhappening and how to use the game. Certainly combat looks to be very intense and I loved his parting comment .. something like "Comabt is about going in hard into a group of enemies and doing as much damage as you can before you go down" - SUCH IS THE LIFE OF A BARBARIAN. Roll on May and when we can finally play AoC.

I was lucky enough to have played i one of his games at a UK GenCon a few years ago now. To have met him was a great honour, to be invited to a game was awesome. Truly a loss to the gaming world, where would we be without him? Gary, keep on rolling those dice.

I have to admit that this one looks very nice indeed. A new genre, backed up by a company with a great deal of MMORPG experience. Rather than the usual, "ooh i hope they do this", or "I hope they DON'T do that", etc - lets just keep our fingers crossed and watch as the game unfolds into a fantastic new opportunity to play online.

You know sometimes it is nice to be corrected. Thanks very much for being pleasant about it to, rather than the usual flamewar.
So, all in all, YIPPEE, I do get to play it at some point.

Just been to the soe.sony.com website, which lists all its games and there it is - under console games then listed as a PS3 title. Ah well, as a PC owner I will miss this opportunity as I dont have a console, well not at that price.

I dont think the fact that a bullet remaining cased in the initial flash animation will comment upon the whole game, however it should be caseless. I also LOVE the smoking gun. I was lucky enough to beta several of Sony's past endeavours, and from their current range of products they have come on a LONG way. They HAVE learned from past difficulties, so let's hope that this goes they way it should, and we all want. No, before someone says, I am not a Sony Fanboye, but I was a professional developer and a manager, so I can see how things have developed. All we have to do now is to sit back and wait for some concrete information to be released. Of course, the clock is ticking.....
Hmmm, this forum thread will self destruct in 30 seconds (oohh yes mission:impossible, here we come)

What is going wrong in the MMORPG world?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 5/14/07 10:36:21 AM
Thanks for these replies - and keep it up. As has been said, poor management can cause a lot of propblems. As the market widens, more people hear of MMORPGs and decide to take a dable, then more people will want to try something different. Take a for instance - look at frontier1859.com - there is a brilliant idea for a game, that as yet doesnt have enough commercial backing and the producers dont want to make a hash of it. Look at the new shadowrun game - there was an opportunity for an awesome mmorpg, but the produces have made it into a FPS, this will work well, but there is so much more available to be done. Certainly we can see good ideas all around, but commercialism takes precident. As mroe and more MMORPGs appear then the users will gradually filter through to the games that they want to play - most havent been written. For instance where are the games for the younger players? We have toon town and..... ? hmmmm, WoW as its colourful and i know players younger than 13 get on to it even though they arent allowed. I believe the BBc will be producing a MMORPG environment, a complete persistent world, at some point, and this could be very interesting - but what sort of game will it be? or will it be a game, or a learning environment... or news.... or.... well we just dont know. All I do know is i want to play something, fun and interesting......

What is going wrong in the MMORPG world?

I hear what you are saying Chiff, and have a few answers myself. As you say you would either be ripped off or just watch the ideas go POOF into the ether of good gaming. Ive been around sourceforge warching a few games being developed there, and sure they have some realy great ideas but you need to invest serious money to get a game launched that isnt a few mates... etc You need to apporach a 'big' independent company... As you say the current splurge of games all seem to be coming from the same sort of mould. Secretly im hoping White Wolf/CCP will open up some dialogue for developers of their new world of darkness mmorpg. After all EVE seems to answer quite a few questions - but im not really a spce ship kinda guy... give me a nice juicey mage :)
