Ok, I've waited for someone to say that, and no1 has, so I'll be the chosen one (by myself).

Most, if not all, of the 250 beta winners have read the following Post by Mr. Marco van Haren, also known as - Freeze_TCoS, the PR Manager of TCoS.

Hey Guys, A quick update here from Spellborn HQ:

Winners can expect more details and information via email within 2 weeks.

Cheers, Marco 'Freeze' van Haren PR Manager TCoS

I edited the original message to make it shorter and more concise.

This was posted in 4/11/06, Two weeks have evidently past already, I did not received any email from the company.
For me this is dissapointing, we are all (potential) future customers, and we won fair and square in that contest. They should tell us of any delays, by mail.

Yeah jpomatto, this game isn't for a casual gamer, which is one of its faults imo.
But it does have some nice features, and good ideas.
I'm playing it right now as a matter of fact, because it's in open beta.

Yeah.. weird choise of names.
But the PeP system (look here) is absolutlely great. Instead of being punished you just don't get rewarded.
And I think they should even expand it to certain items, meaning you can use a specific item only if your PeP rank is 2
or above.

I think that 3 types of rogue is excellent, like there are types of warriors in fantasy worlds - General Fighter, Paladin, Anti-Paladin, Warrior-Mage etc'. It gives you more diversity and forms of gameplay.

No, you'll probably.. oh wait.. CERTAINLY will wait a couple of WEEKS.
If you'd  bother reading this - LINK
wow... I edited this post 3 times and I still can't post the link properly. found a BUG in mmorpg.com.
ok, because I can't give you a link, get into Gratz everyone look at page 11, in Freeze_TCoS post.
you would've known that everyone from those 250 winners is gonna eat his fingers until we start beta testing.

I think that if you want good graphix, THE best character custimozation to date (even won some prizes) and more PvE emphasis than PVP - then try City of Heroes/Villains.

And I'm not even playing it, so no fanboishness here. It just fit most of your list, except of skills, which aren't that varied and you'll find that same class got almost identical skills.

The European winners will be part of the European Beta and the US winners will be part of the US Beta. Since the US server is in the process of being launched we decided to invite all 250 winners at the same time. So no head start for the Europeans, but a fair chance for all.  Hope this clears things up.

Freeze.

Well, it clears things up alright.. but pretty sad for those who do have a running server and need to wait to
connect to it because of this "being fair" policy, which I'm not sure is really important for the US beta testers (why should they care if a person from EU gets to play in EU server?).

But, enough with the whining

I have another quick question for you, Mr. Freeze -
Is this beta test, for an almost finished game as I understand, just to put stress on the servers to test them or do we, the beta testers, have other forms of influences on the game before it is officially released? If we do, what are they?

Just a quick question to you, Freeze, if I may.

As a soon-to-be beta tester from Israel, which in most cases considered to be EU country, will I be able to play
without the need to wait for the US server to be fully optimized?

I'm sure that this is a question that every non US person from the winners would like to know the answer for.

First, it has elements of FPS in it.
It has a unique way of battle, with quickly spinning tiers of attacks/buff/debuffs etc'.
Based on revamped veriosn of Unreal Engine 2.5 (which I think is superb).
The story seems to be very engaging, playing on a shard floating in the void.

I woke up today from a bad dream, not a scary one, but one that a close person fuc*s me over and steal money from me. anyway, I check my email and ta-da! I got a winning ticket! this sure bright up my day.

Being so excited and all I got into the Tcos site and entered my ticket number as a beta key and, as to be expected I guess, nothing happend. So, I've saved you guys the trouble in using ticket number the wrong way.

Well, this game afaik is a real innovation in the young to almost non-existent MMORTS field. I looked at some games over at http://mmorts.com and most, if not all, don't seem to be on the level of production - at least graphically - of MMORPGs these days. Even the open beta of Ballerium, which I've tried, seems *very* low budget, awful sounds and unattrective interface.
Maybe this MMORTS will be the first outbreak of this genre to mainstream success.

On a side note, they're streching it with hype sentences like this - "the most sophisticated web interface"..

Welp, I think it's a smart move from the compay side.
* It's admitting they have published an half-baked game. Which is pretty courageous.
* It will give curious players a taste of the game, and they could become subscribers afterwards.
* In the meantime, the money from this new-curious-players, can be invested to make the game
better, which kind of a publicity in itself.

From what I've read it seems like it will be pretty cheap for the casual gamers - you get 15 Game Credits with the purchase of the Freedom Card package and you can spend what you want when you want it.
A good deal IMO. Unless the game will be crappy and then I would like to see at least a 14 days free trial.

How can I check if a game, like Auto Assault for example, is succeful in terms of filling up their servers?
I mean, there is no data like that in most MMO sites.  And if  it isn't possible, how can you rate success in an alternative form?

Hmm.. what does it mean "no height maps"?

there's almost nothing new in this article.. most of these features (skill-based, no instancing, pvp oriented etc')  were already introduce in the past.

But I'm still very much hyped by this game

Getting rid of classes and the level grind sounds good but it raises a big question - How do you handle character progression? Most people's answer would be to use a skill system but that's only a partial solution which doesn't even touch the big problem. It gives players more freedom to make their characters unique, which can only be a good thing, but it does nothing substantial about the grind problem. All it does is take one big grind for levels and turn it into several smaller grinds for skill ranks. It's just an illusion of change.

Character progression is at the core of MMORPGs. There's absolutely no point in having a persistent character if they never change. Without change, you may as well just have a screenname floating over a generic avatar like in a FPS game. If you're going to have character progression, then you need a gameplay mechanic to facilitate that progression. That's the heart of the grind - what you need to do to improve your character - and every MMORPG with character progression has it

I strongly agree with almost everything the article criticized and suggested, but while reading your very thorough counter-post it made me re-think about those suggested features.

But then I noticed the problem in your post, you focused on something that can be considered the main paradigm of today MMORPGs - the characters (not the world).

The article talks about changing the world in profound ways, its main focus is the world and how characters can affect it, not skill/level mathematical progression of the individual character.

Imo, when people who play a game where their characters truly affects their surroundings they *would* feel another kind of progression. Just like you feel a progression in your real-life while writing an article, building something, defeating an opponent in chess/martial art combat with no numerical stats attached! It's the progression towards goals, not toward getting the 200 HP or 40-50 dmg lightning bolt.

We are so caught up within those paradigms that we see progression in a one-dimensional way, and it's simply not true or wise to see it that way.

With this in mind, you can implement a skill system with no stats visible and make the sheer experience of progression a subjective one, like the one you get playing a FPS game. When you play UNREAL for example, you don't *know* you are better than anyone else, you *see* it when you avoid attacks, aiming skillfully and come up with new strategies against your opponents.  And how do you get better in skills that don't require you to be trigger-happy, like crafting, swimming etc'? You just use it, as many times as you like, and get better – knowing the mechanics is "Do it = Get better" you will subjectively see results. You will say to your fellow players "I used to cross this river by swimming very slowly, but now I'm like a shark in there!", this will also contribute to a healthy role-playing of characters.

btw, sorry if I'm not being 100% clear, english isn't my native language.

Well, The headling says it all I guess.

I'm one of those lucky-unlucky fellows who got a beta account from turbine and didn't like the game mechanics (yes, I hate those fucking instancing, class system + it runs very slow on my pc dunno why).

hope turbine won't find out i'm whoring their beta account generosity.. ::::28::

Anyway.. as far as I understand the beta account has limited time until the game's out to the public so it's a fair trade!
