No secret there. I think it's a fair questiion for the mmorpg community though.

I have no interest in GW2. I did not preorder it nor do I ever plan on playing it. I have been in the CB for TSW for weeks now and I will say that the animations are ugly as hell. Doesn't mean the game sucks juat that the animations do.

it don't get much better than swtor animations ;) Good call. One of the two things they nailed imo. In all honesty they are better than both the games we've been talking about in this thread.

I wanted to post this in general to some opinions from the mmorpg.com community.

Simple enough question, what do you think?

Such fanboyism on both sides in this thread. Having played both games and enjoyed both I can say that the combat system in both games are practically identical - I would say TSW has a more complex combat system due to the management of resource while GW2 only has to manage cooldowns but im sure I would get swarmed by the rabbid heathens who are only out to prove one game to be good.

Suffice to say, TSW and GW2 are similar in so many respects that if you wish to slag one off, you inadvertantly slag the other off too...

This will fall on deaf ears here.

Wrong. There are many MMO's in which you can cast while moving, might not be every single move, but still some.

WoW has mages able to use scorch while moving, it also have shamans being able to cast any spell while moving.

GW2 has full casting while moving too.

Tera has some moving while casting too at the later levels.

Most single player games have casting while moving.

Yet, all of these still look better while moving and casting than TSW.

No it doesn't.... Sometimes I just don't know anymore...  Did you read what I said TSW is the only with all. How the hell can I be wrong when you say some?

You're basically dismissing all of GW2's abilities which can be cast while moving because a few abilities require you to stay in place. You can still cast most of the abilities while moving so the concept is really the same, yet ArenaNet has managed to somehow make the animations look fluid and not robotic, while Funcom, and you, are making excuses.

Nice try though.

Not at all. all games have somethings you can do while moving... TSW is the only where you can move and use all abilities. It's ok fearless. See you on the TSW forums.

Cooper thinks people won't see the logical fallacy.

"TSW has all abilities castable from running" has nothing at all to do with many other MMOs having on the fly animations for some, many, or most abilities that you can cast on the fly or  while running without stopping.  Having "all abilities" doesn't disable a company from animating them correctly if anything it should enable them to animate them more efficiently as the same rules and systems apply to every move.

If anything cooper is showing how lazy Funcom was when they did the animations.   It should be easier to animate 100% while running moves than it would be to animate 90% of one class and maybe 10% of another and 70% of another.  Also I'm sure it is easier to animate while running moves with no detachment when all body types are the same rather than some extra large or small and different bones for different races.

No Cooper thinks the animations are good, damn good, and I know FC did something that hasn't been done in any mmo before, moving while using all abilities.

I also know that 99% of the post about TSW animations comes from people who bought GW2  without a release date, and that is the only immeasurable thing they cling to dis TSW.

The upper body acts indeptendantly to the lower half.

You must of skipped some courses, the upper body has to be independent of the lower body because unlike most other mmo in TSW you can cast while moving, including channeled abilities.

What MMO can't players cast while moving?  Melees always had on the fly moves.  WoW - rogues had combo builders, stuns. finishers.  Tera most moves go into over the top animations that plays more like soul calibur than an MMO, but moves such as charge foward will start and end while at full run speed, swtor the jedi shadow and even more so the jedi sent and the imp counter parts could do most of the 20 combat abilities they needed while running.  In age of conan the melee classes could run around via circle strafe while bunny hopping and cast most combos so it is not the game engine.  Melee classes always have casting on the fly.

I am just trying to understand why as it seems like most games I have played have on the fly animations without so much detachment of upper and lower body.

As many have said your wrong.  MMO's do it just fine, FPS games do it just fine, RPG's do it just fine, only TSW has issues with it.  You need to stop listening to the Funcom talking heads and starting using your own brain for a bit.  Every major development studio has worked out this problem except Funcom.  I'm sure Funcom has worked it out as well but for whatever reason (money, time to deploy, preformance, engine issues, etc.) they couldn't implement it by the targeted lauch date so they had to come up with a reason it's not in.

I'm also sure they will be able to "solve" this unsolvable issue within 6-12 months assuming they can get enough suckers/customers to fund their ongoing development efforts.

Tell me one other MMO (mmo not fps..) where you can move while using all the abilities? Just one. I'm waiting. (normal EVE disclaimer) TSW is the only one.

edit - go figure I wonder what game this guy has bought with no release date. Yeah second thought TSW is bad. You guys go play GW2 when it comes out in oct/nov/dec maybe?

How about DCOU? And why does it matter if it's one ability or all of them? If someone can be proved it can be done than the excuse is invalid.

Nope they have cast times that break when moving. It's ok man really. No need to make anything else up. Just don't play.

We should have got that instead of cata. The train has left the station though... I think?

you said it, Eq1... youve been into elves and fairies for quite a long time!! no wonder you dont like the game :) many of us who have grown up kind of got over the whole elf and fairy deal quite a while ago. For us, fantasyland simply doesn't float our boat. But thats fine, have fun in GW2.

I'm an old D&D pen and paper/MUD playing type from way back on my first gen Mac Plus PC. Saying that I don't think any of us who are old school pen and paper types ever get tired of fantasy worlds they are generally just so much more interesting than anything "real life" has to offer. But i do enjoy TSW setting a great deal as well

oh and just an FYI you come off in your posts as an arrogant teenager in case you wanted to know.

Same here MUDs, AD&D, Warhammer, Stormbringer, Marvel, DC, even TMNT lol. Even built my own BBS with about 30 doors with moving ascii graphics ftw! F Al Gore, I helped pioneer the internet! 13 yrs old at the time.

After 5 years in WoW and 1 in RIFT, I am tired of Elves, Orcs, and furries... Real wrold with imperfect NPC that curse drink and smoke. I can relate to that now a days.

too easy every negative post is from a GW2 zealot.

TSW use the Dreamworld engine. This is their own engine. I never played those other games. It hard for me to believe this is the same company I hear all those bad things about. Right now today a see a A-1 indy co. With Vision, great CS and a hella fun game.

i may be having trouble understanding your post, did you just call Funcom an "indy" developer?

if you played TSW and came out of it with the impression that it was made by an indy game company i'm not so sure stating so will help your cause here.

Yes Funcom is an independent developer. I hope they stay independent too.

This raises the question of what you think of as independent?  They are a corporation with hundreds of employees.  What exactly is your destinction between an indy company and everyone else?

they are what Blizzard, Bioware, Anet used to be. Independent. They own all their IPs.

There's also sabotage quests, puzzle quests and other quests that aren't about killing. Look, it seems you're not into TSW and GW2 is the game you want to marry and have kids with - figuratively speaking - all good, but this constant trashing you do of a game you don't seem to like besides bashing it because it isn't GW2 is kinda getting tiresome. Besides, I've played GW2 but you don't see me pissing on the game in the GW2 section how the Heart quests are often generic and the same 'kill this, get that' stuff only in another package.

Because if we're talking generic archetype standards for quest tasks, GW2 has plenty of them as well. That's objectivity speaking.

And I'm someone who will play both games, so not as if I can't still enjoy even the generic quest/DE tasks that GW2 has.

I'm not trashing your beloved, don't worry. I'm pointing out the truth.

My point is that all of the TSW fans are always claiming how TSW is a game for the thinking man and how you need to use your brain and whatnot. Then you log in and 95% of the quests are generic MMO quests which place markers on the map and your screen.

Quests in gw2 Are the usual fetch this, explode x amounts of tree stumps, kill 10 peeps hidden in a dynamic event. Its different from a quest hub but quests Are the same. Quests have no bearing on the world as if you leave the area and come back later you can do it again. Atleast in tsw there is an immersive story due to quests being tiered. Gw2 will be a great pvp game, but tsw will be a much better pve game.

There are no quest hubs in GW2. As far as bearing on the world goes, the game world changes depending on the outcome of certain dynamic events.

Also, are you trying to say that quests in TSW have bearing on the world? Please don't. Just don't.

This is what it looks like.

So I supose we can conclude that this game is a shinier version of WoW where you are shooting 90 degrees to the right and your weapon points straight ahead? If it applies to GW2 mechanics, why not here?

Well I guess we can.

If the point of generic quests in TSW is the same as Hearts in GW2 then there are way too many of them. There are a handful of hearts on each map in GW2 and there are always multiple ways of completing them. Hell, sometimes you can do one dynamic event and complete the heart event as well.

In TSW most quests are generic and only a handful are actually investigation. In Kingsmouth there is something like ~60 quests, out of those only 3 are investigation and 2 others require you to google something.

Stop it heartless. You know there are 4 types of quest. You can choose to do them all or just one type. Each quest is from 3-20 parts most around 5 parts. You do not have to do 1 kill x quest if you don't want to and advance just as smooth as someone who did them all. You know this.

Each heart event has different ways of completing it. Each generic quest in TSW has only 1 way of completing it. And you do have to complete them because quests are one of the best ways to get XP which gives you more AP and SP, which make your character better. So yea, you kinda do have to do all of them.

Oh and you stop it!

Did you even read my post you responded too? come on. You know you don't have to do the "genaric" (5 part hard as hell sometime) quest at all if you don't want to.

You can investigate and story your way for ever if you want. I'm not that smart, but good at kicking butt, so the generics are great for me.  Smarter more attentive people can investigate and sabatoge the entire game.
