It doesn't have to bounce back. They're still the most popular and likely profitable MMO out there. Most influx of subs are probably old players coming back for big updates and then leaving again to do other stuff once they're done with the content.

I don't know how many people are actively "playing" it anymore in comparison to using at as a social messenger with 3d graphics. Many people have invested so much money and time in the game that they feel like they can't leave or don't want to leave because of it. In addition to friendships they made and what not. For them it was a huge part of their life growing up and discovering MMOs.

I get on Steam just because I have friends on there not necessarily because I want to play games at that immediate moment. I use it more as a messenger than anything and it just so happens that if I do want to play a game everything is right there easily accessible. I think it's the same with WoW.

MMOs haven't been able to get me immersed in their worlds for well over a decade I'd say. And I've played practically every single f2p one you can think of, as well as some b2p. This is the first MMO since then that feels like it actually has a fleshed out and immersive world that makes me want to experience for myself.

I don't know the timeframe of development for both games but if you're implying they ripped it off, I highly doubt it. It's been in development for several years and only recently shown to the public.

Regardless though it doesn't even matter, they are completely different games in every other way. Shards is focusing on allowing extensive modding and giving players the ability to run their own servers while also providing official servers for players who want to experience the "official" lore and what not.

Very glad to see they met the goal, but hopefully they can raise more money to get additional features added in too.

i really got no clue how people can like this game, it was aweful...

rly bad combating system, hard to understand and so on...

last time they asked for backers they didnt recieve the goal and it was more then what it was now, and that makes me wonder... this 50000 usd they ask for now will it even be enought since Before they asked for more?.

It was in a PRE-alpha state (and still is). Yes the combat wasn't the most polished, but expecting anything to be polished in what is essentially a prototype demo is completely unreasonable. If you back this you are not backing it for what is there NOW but what will be there when they're done. You accept the mechanical and polish issues because those will be fixed, you look at the overall design decisions (and their future plans) and then decide if you think it's worthy of the money.

They are still building the game and they are much further along than most people who start kickstarters. Typically all I see are flashy images, lofty promises and a lot of hype with nothing  to back it all up. At least they have the balls to put out a playable demo, despite any issues they know they have with it, for everyone to jump into to prove that they actually have something and are working towards completing it.

The 50,000 is to make a fully playable alpha build by early 2015 that is relatively polished and filled with replayable content. They are not aiming to make the entire game, or everything they had in the last KS, with 50,000. They explained most of this in the short video. They initially promised 4 complete worlds and a crap ton of other things in the previous kickstarter. This one is far more focused and smaller in scale with only 1 world, but it seems they have pushed up the timeline for modding tools and player-run servers which is fantastic. It will give people interested in running a server a VERY early start to trying out all the tools and give them feedback on how to further develop tools for server admins and developers.

I would be willing to try it out but at this point i already can play a game i like during Alpha with no strings attached,no using Facebook or paying money or buying ships no strings attached and that is how i like it.

I like hearing the word "modding" but to what degree is it effective is what matters.Example on paper what Nwn was doing sounded great but when in game it was just imo really weak and not worth my time to take part in the quest making.

You need a really good engine and tools and you need a way to make modding useful in game. As i could imagine it adding stuff to game would have to be continually d/l and most likely in instances.

Modding is a huge part of Shards online, perhaps the biggest. They aim to let you mod virtually EVERYTHING about the game if you have the knowledge and skills to do it, however, a lot of the modding will also be very simple and user friendly.

If you don't like something about the game you can bet that you will more than likely be able to change it. From very small tweaks to how the game works to overhauls, it should all be possible. Honestly, it sounds like it would be similar to Skyrim in the ease to mod, maybe even easier since you can just change a lot of things through text files.

When you decide you want to run your own server it comes with ALL of the official game content, quests, scripts, etc... You can keep or remove any of it but it is there as a base to start your own world if you want. Even if you have no scripting knowledge you should be able to pick it up quickly as it 's very user friendly (LUA is the language). If you still don't like that there are several in-game commands and things you can edit via GUIs to modify certain things too, but all the powerful changes that will set your server apart from everyone else's will come from scripting obviously.

I'd highly recommend looking into the game if you're searching for a real sandbox experience. Also note that several of the team members worked on Ultima Online in the past.

Here are a few links about modding:

There are many great threads on their forums discussing modding and all the details about it if you're really interested.

Played the game several times over the course of a year or so, with months between each time.

The game has far bigger issues than "bots." Every game has them so that's kind of irrelevant unless it's literally overrun (which I didn't notice in any of my time playing).

I'm more bothered by the incredibly annoying story quests that take forever to complete because it's so slow, like the first few ones where you disguise as a pirate or whatever. Every time I start a new character I have to do those to progress, it sucks. The game was average, but that and the fact that my character (all of them) feel completely useless compared to pets just put me off completely. I prefer Eden Eternal far more if only because of the job system and all of the features it has for guilds and what not.

Bots don't kill an MMO for me, just like gold spammers and sellers don't kill it either. Greedy companies can, but I haven't played anywhere near enough to get to the point where I could conclusively say the game is worse off because of "x" item in the cash shop. I browsed through it and there were definitely some questionable things in there that I didn't like so you're probably right about that, but people can still get some enjoyment out of the game until that becomes a legit issue.

This is not a Steam specific issue. Almost any online game (especially MMORPGs) will ban your account if you dispute or issue a chargeback. The policy sucks but it's to protect them. Every time someone does something like this they have to not only pay you back the money but also a little extra (don't know how much exactly) to paypal or something along those lines.

That's just the way it is currently, I think it's something you have to accept and be aware of. Imo you should have just been patient and tried to resolve it with valve and get in phone contact with them if possible.

Disputing the transaction (even if you're in the right and there was a legitimate problem like in the OPs situation) will get your account permanently banned in almost every online game. Taking this action should be a last resort. I believe you have around 30-60 days from the purchase date to issue a chargeback. If there's a day left until you can't do it anymore you either take the loss or go for the chargeback and almost assuredly get banned.

It sucks but there's not much you can do about it I don't think.

No online service is perfect. Even if you buy your games off of GoG or another site it still doesn't guarantee you access to your games if they shut down. Yes you can download and play the games without the hassle(?) of logging into anything but if you don't store the games on a hard drive or CDs (or you lose them or it gets corrupted) and GoG goes out of business you're still screwed and have no access to the games you bought. Steam claims that IF it should ever go out of business it will allow everyone to download everything from their library. And if I were to ever get banned, or Steam goes out of business and I have no way to "legally" access everything I've already paid for I have no issues getting them elsewhere.

They're skipping 9 and going directly to 10.

Just google it there are plenty of articles about it.

I only played the beginning theme park part and didn’t even finish it. So this review will not cover the other parts of pvp and raiding and such.

This review is basically pointless then...

Everyone on this site knows the game starts off slow, basically treats the player like they have never stepped foot in an MMO before.

Also there isn't "Raiding" like you think.

You basically did not even play Archeage, and that's fine, we all know the early game is just a tutorial and not that exciting. But it is necessary because you will never feel overwhelmed. Everything is introduced at the right time and makes you feel confident upon hitting 30 and venturing into the PvP zones.

This shouldn't be called a review, mostly a first impression, and that is it.

Yea, I stopped reading after that sentence. I figure if OP's not gonna play the whole game why should I read the whole "review"?

If the game designers/developers aren't going to put in the effort to grab your attention as soon as possible with the gameplay and introduce you to the "fun" stuff then why should I or anyone continue to play the game? You can't expect players to play tens of hours of a game they are not enjoying for the promise or hope that it's supposedly going to get better 50 hours in or however long it takes.

The "review" is entirely valid. If you want to consider it a first impressions then so-be-it. What you call it is more or less irrelevant imo, you take it for what it is to you and that's it.

If you don't want to create a macro just go sit down in the courthouse. You can afk and not get kicked.

This is probably the only way to afk without using any 3rd party programs or macros. The wonderful thing is, people that have those seats are selling them for gold! Amazing how an MMO turned "sitting down in a chair" into something profitable!

That's how you know your game designers have succeeded in creating a compelling and fun experience right?

Yep. If I need to do something outside of the game for a while I'll just leave the game on, don't really see why not. Doesn't make much sense not to seeing as how incredibly stingy they are with giving you labor points and how incredibly greedy they are with taking them away from you when you want to do anything.

Wasn't very good in closed beta. It has virtually nothing to do with FEAR and it doesn't even play like it at all. The shooting and weapons all feel like generic FPS weapons and there were some ridiculously OP things in there.

The game was pretty fun but it was plagued by MANY game breaking bugs and other minor issues that affected gameplay negatively. Can't say I'd recommend the game at all from my experiences with it in CB and this is not even looking at the cash shop stuff. Don't expect much if you do decide to try it, especially if you're a fan of the FEAR franchise.

It is a result of their incredibly poor design decisions. The labor points (and all the features surrounding the use of labor points) I think being the biggest factor in leading players to afk.

Not being able to recover them while offline makes absolutely no sense to me and encourages players to stay afk in-game. To be completely honest I think they just assumed everyone would spend money on those potions to recover them rather than afk, otherwise I can't explain this decision in any way.

They are obviously just estimates, probably based on how long players stay in game and averaged or something. The times could go down drastically if many people DC or just log out at the same time for whatever reason.

But I dunno, either way it's incredibly off-putting seeing even an hour queue times. Reminds me of when TERA went f2p, that's the only time in recent memory (over the past 10 or so years) that I recall ever having to wait in a queue.

I'm not too bothered by it but I'm not one of the people who are incredibly hyped about the game so I'll likely wait a week or so until everything dies down. Or just wake up early. There weren't any queues a few hours ago on the NA servers.

When you are on forums or a game you are technically on someone else's property. Therefore you are not allowed to say whatever the hell you want and claim freedom of speech, it doesn't work like that.

If you were to go into a store and start yelling, swearing, and being generally obnoxious they have every right to kick you out of there.

People should actually read the amendments before trying to claim one of theirs is being violated because clearly the vast majority of people spouting that nonsense don't even know what it means and just assumes you can say anything you want wherever you want.

Good question.

I tried to google cybercrime jurisdiction, but nothing definitive came back.

No one organization polices the internet, the internet is owned by everyone and no one. For the US you can just report it to the fbi and they will likely take care of it, but there is also the IC3:

Since different organizations provide internet across each continent the people you would contact is different. But since Trion I'm assuming is in the US, they'd just go to the fbi to deal with it if they really wanted to.

Like many people mentioned, dealing with ddos attacks can be incredibly costly and ultimately not worth it since it typically doesn't go on for very long and the extra hardware upgrades will go to waste once the attack is over. It's the same as companies usually not being prepared to handle a large influx of people on launch, they don't want to buy all the extra hardware because they know the traffic will die down to a more reasonable level after the first week or so.

Okay indulge me... Whom is sat at this "big people table"?

Obviously Blizzard since no one really comes close to them.

People stopped caring is what happened.

In the past when MMORPGs were a relatively "new" thing it was something incredible and unheard of to be playing with tens of people all on one screen and knowing there are hundreds (or thousands total) playing at the same time in the same world.

People got over that and no longer care anymore for various reasons. Personally I don't care because it typically doesn't affect the game in any significant way at all. Worlds are not dynamic and almost never change and players can't change the world either in a meaningful way. You don't interact with a vast majority of the players, they're just there to be ignored (they hold little to no importance overall in the grand scheme of things) or on occasion make a trade with if there's no auction house (or to be invited to a group if what you're trying to do requires one).

Someone simply needs to redefine "MMORPG" or create one in a way where the amount of players present play a significant role in the game and its evolution/progression. Far too many features are implemented in a half-assed manner in MMORPGs these days and not a lot of care or innovation is happening in the genre which is why I think it has become very stale. Right now the "Massive" for me refers more to the world rather than the amount of players. Until a large amount of players actually mean something it's not going to bother me if an online game markets itself as an MMORPG, it's simply far easier to say they're an MMORPG rather than an "online game" or something of the sort because people typically search for MMOs or MMORPGs. Even from a search engine standpoint it's likely a much better decision to label yourself that even if you aren't.

Don't think so. It doesn't even let me update the game, it thinks I'm trying to play it.
