Tried to play this again on multiple occasions and could never get it to work properly. Maybe I'll give it another shot at one point. I loved the idea behind the game, especially a much "darker"/horror themed MMO, but as someone mentioned... the grind was just way too much.

http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/cnvvQS/http://www.mmorpg.com/

It's not too bad. For me it typically takes from 4-8 seconds.

It's obviously a very very old website. I'm sure there have been improvements to it over the years but I'm not sure how much. They're still using the spry panels and I'm pretty sure those are deprecated.

Most of the loading is probably coming from all the images used everywhere.

Using Chrome, mmobomb actually loads about a second faster but from the same website here: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/djoPkQ/http://www.mmobomb.com/ it says the load time is wayyyy faster (1.76) than mmorpg.com (5.45 to 8.0). Mmohuts: http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/eItot2/http://www.mmohuts.com/ is about a 3.4

Overall though, it varies a lot. Sometimes the mmorpg homepage loads in about 1.5-4 seconds for me (just counting), mmobomb can take up to 3-4, mmohuts also around 1 second or less.

I'm not sure if there's any problem with the mmorpg site in comparison to other similar sites. When doing things like clicking on reply, or edit, it can take quite a while to load everything properly.

You can also compare or analyze using other sites too like this one: http://gtmetrix.com/reports/mmorpg.com/3NMKJ8IB They give a lot of good tips on how you can optimize like combining certain images into a sprite sheet, minifying the css and just generally optimizing images.

That means absolutely nothing. Borderlands had the same pitch of "a bajillionty" possible gun combinations.

That's nice... but only a small handful are interesting in any way, and a smaller handful end up being viable end-game.

These kinds of statements don't do absolutely anything to make me more interested, in fact it makes me less interested because it tells me they have nothing better to tell us beyond these meaningless "facts."

I've played plenty of games that utilized procedural generation so I'm not one of the people who foams at the mouth when hearing things like this. If they can actually make it interesting and somehow give each place a unique feel (fleshed out cultures and morals, different tech levels, different religions and political systems, etc...), then they'll have my respect. It's likely going to end up being very shallow but we'll see when it's actually released. Till then, my feelings about it are simply "meh."

Does anyone have anymore information on what the changes are, if any? Either no one (sites like mmorpg that cover news) seems to know or they aren't saying for whatever reason.

I read that free to play players will still be restricted, just not as much as previously. Someone said a 30% exp penalty and reduced drop rates and you don't get any bonus exp for  future characters or whatever (can't remember the exact mechanics). Aside from that any new zones that will be released wont be accessible to free to play players, at least not immediately.

Have there been any REAL changes to wakfu or is this just to get them more publicity and pretend it's a new game? The quote and link in the OP don't provide any information what-so-ever about this "open beta" or any changes to the game.

Wha..? This game is old as balls. How is it in open beta?

I actually downloaded this and dofus about 2-3 months ago since I remembered liking them years back and I didn't need a beta key or anything.

If this is a rerelease then what exactly has been changed? I can't remember which game it was but either dofus or wakfu had pretty annoying restrictions for non-premium members.

Old as balls???   Wakfu was released in 2012 it is not that old and Dofus on the other hand is but i'd like to point out the wakfu site mentions nothing about open beta aka for steam on their site that I can find.

From what I remember the beta tests were way earlier than 2012. Way earlier as in several years earlier. The game may have released in 2012 (or maybe even rereleased, I don't know) but it was definitely open to the public way before that.

If you look for reviews you can see some of them dating back to 2009 and maybe earlier. Here's one from onrpg: http://www.onrpg.com/articles/wakfu-review-the-sequel-of-dofus/

Most of their ads, art-wise at least, look pretty cool to me.

Granted I would never visit mmorpg.com at school or anywhere else in public because I don't want people thinking I'm some sort of horny pervert looking at half naked cartoon women.

The game is utter garbage though. I don't know who in their right mind is giving them enough money to constantly advertise on the site 24/7.

I feel the complete opposite. While many MMOs do allow solo players to get most of the things they need, almost every single situation I find it's impossible to do it efficiently or simply flat out impossible.

Most MMOs now focus heavily on group content like instanced dungeons and large raids, even if you wanted to try it solo you are usually barred out of it if you're not in a group.

Leveling yeah, sure, that can usually be done solo but again I find it's typically no where near as fast as with a group, especially when there is content geared specifically towards groups and not solo players like dungeons and raids.

Wasn't there another review or preview on here that was mostly praising everything about the game? I have no idea if they are actually with the mmorpg.com staff or just somehow got featured on the front page. Seems like a complete change in opinion from closed beta to open.

not in the traditional sense.

It is also a horrid mess spawned from a pretty good idea.

It did seem like a good idea gone wrong. I don't think I ever ran into a castle I couldn't get through and I only ever stopped the really bad players when they just rushed in.

It's almost like a facebook game.

I don't know when the last time you played it was but that's not the case at all anymore. There are several EXTREMELY broken layouts for castles that people use because they removed the limit for traps in a certain area and monsters in an area.

You will frequently run into castles with these broken layouts where you just can't avoid damage and in a lot of cases results in instant death. Typically 4-5 long corridors with springs to fling you into a room full of the red mines. Practically impossible to get through alive.

This may have changed yet again, last I played was about 6 months ago and just lost interest.

Combat and mixing different styles.

"His favorite two were spitting giant fireballs/rocks at hurling them at players – something almost assuredly could one-shit anybody"

Should probably reread and revise your articles before posting them (or get someone else to). That's two in one sentence, I ignored the rest.

Aside from that, I will likely go back to Firefall to try it out at launch or a little after launch once things settle down. The current direction it's taking may be far different from several iterations, overhauls and "promises" they made but personally, I don't care much. Imo it's probably for the better, the game wasn't that fun after a while especially as they began to focus more and more on resources and gathering them.

I heard they will wipe the game, or resources before launch. Is this true?

It's definitely possible but if you're an amateur I wouldn't suggest trying to build them. If you know what you're doing then go for it. Check out Digital Storm, last I remember they had some very tiny but powerful PCs.

Check this one: http://www.digitalstormonline.com/bolt-ii.asp and a video showing it off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUKdhXdcYeg

Not saying buy it, but just throwing it out there so it might give you ideas on what's possible.

I don't really understand how you can review the game this early. How many hours have you played the game and how far have you gotten into it? As far as I know the game isn't even released yet, still in the beta build until the download is made available so pretty much any negatives you say could be (most notably the "performance" issues) completely wrong for the release build.

EDIT: My apologies on going with the info listed on the game's site. But we have been in contact with Larian all along, and they were comfortable with us publishing our review today.  FWIW.  I am highly doubtful that the client that releases today with more VO will impact the score. And as others have said: taking money for a game means far more than "early access" or "beta" stamps.

See: HERE.

It's not a huge deal to me personally since I already own the game and it's your call on publishing a review for a game that is essentially unfinished. While the score may not go much higher, as a consumer I would not know which parts of your review to trust since you are reviewing based on your experiences with the unfinished version (unless you guys were given the release build ahead of time or something).

Imo you should have a disclaimer or make it clear that the review is based on experiences during the early access/beta period.

Id say the review is based on a product that costs real money NOW. If i can spend money on something, i like to check reviews wether i am wasting my money or not.

It sure sounds nice for a company to sell stuff without "fearing" a negative review, and it sure as hell worked well for the most part (you are a good example of people falling for that trap).

The "but the game is not finished!"-card only works if there is a set in stone release date. Unless that is the case a review is fair game as soon as the company takes my money, as i want professional information about a product as soon as i can spend my money on it. Not a year later.

That being said: The review is kinda in favor of the game and a game usually does not get worse if they get more time. So this game is actually a bad example ;-) if the review was BAD as hell, id understand the doubts... but then again: Money is changing pockets here, so time for reviews.

I did not fall for any trap. I liked the idea and the team behind the game, therefore I donated money to the kickstarter to help them along with their plan.

They put out the review an hour or so before the official full release. Without a disclaimer stating that their review is based on early access/beta gameplay everyone will assume they are reviewing the "release" version since the review appeared the same day. Your reasoning for wanting a review as soon as you can spend money on a product is completely invalidated by the fact that they waited until release day post the review of the early access version. I'm not making excuses for the game being unfinished (because at this point it doesn't matter, the game IS finished now), I simply want it to be made clear that they're not reviewing the official release version of the game but rather a beta build regardless of how insignificant you may feel the term beta is.

It doesn't matter if the review is in favor of the game or if it was a 9/10 score on everything, the fact of the matter is those scores are for a version they played that was incomplete and people will use that review to make their decisions. Honestly, this just seems like they wanted to be the first people to have a review out so screw actually playing the release version and reviewing that, we'll just rate it based on playing the unfinished version and no one will question it. I feel it's intentionally misleading not to have a disclaimer and a bad practice. The only time beta was mentioned was on the second page in one of the paragraphs for the polish section. Maybe I'm just overblowing the situation, but I still don't think it's right to post the review on release day and not have it prominently mentioned at the start of the review.

Some are very similar, practically identical, and some aren't that close.

With that said I don't think you can sue someone from recreating hairstyles you have in your game. If they actually ripped the models and stuff to use it in their game (as in they literally took the meshes and just put them in their game), definitely, but as it is now I doubt anything will happen.

People create mods for games (skyrim and oblivion comes to mind) that also blatantly "rip off" and sometimes just straight up steal art assets from MMOs with third part programs and virtually nothing happens to them. Not to mention other assets like weapons and clothing. If nothing is done about the countless people who steal and recreate assets from popular games/animes/whatever and make mods out of them then this shouldn't be any different.

Just replying to say that the instances of Chrome you are seeing in the process list is likely extensions you have running. I noticed the same thing and I began closing some of the process and I noticed extensions disappearing.

With that said I think I had a similar issue before but calling my ISP seemed to resolve whatever was wrong. My problem was that I couldn't connect to the internet at all via browsers or almost anything, yet skype and a few other things that also require internet worked fine.

Could be a faulty ethernet cable or something like that too, but if you said you play games fine on the PC with issues then I'm not too sure what to suggest. Others in here likely have better advice to give you, all I can say is to call your ISP and try to get it resolved with them first just in case it's something easy to diagnose for them.

Level 17 is basically still the tutorial.  You can't even touch the shell, let alone get into the meat of the game, until level 20.

Yeah - I know, that's a bit odd given conventions from other games.

You get much flashier skills once you progress into your school a bit.

Can you elaborate a bit more on that? How do you "progress into your school?" Will the game actually tell you that after you reach level 20?

I pressed 'K' (which I assume is the skill window) and only saw 4 more skills. I did see some other stuff in there, I think different stances maybe, do all of the stances come with their own skills as well or what?

So the initial story is basically your character being initiated into the school of your choice.  As best as I can tell it's all level gated via the main quest.  You will quest straight into your 2nd set where you will have a training quest in your school map.  That's where things open a bit.  You'll have two sets that you can switch between or create a custom skill set (not recommended early).

What you are describing from the "K" menu are your school forms.  Each school has 3 forms, you'll unlock the other 2 later.  There's also an option for a custom set of skills using school-less skills or a combination of all 3 forms.  I've not tested that all since I only have 2 forms and they don't synergize well together.

As you progress in level you should automatically get a quest to return to your school or have a quest integrated directly into the main chain.  Pretty hard to miss it.

Thanks. I just got to level 20 and I will say that it is definitely much better with my second skill set. I haven't actually tried switching between the two during combat but I can still that it will definitely be much more fun with custom stances when you unlock more forms.

As for everyone else experience lag, you should probably post your relevant system specs. I have a low to mid range PC, with everything maxed (aside from some disgusting effects like bloom) I run the game perfectly fine. No lag or anything.
